Agreed... not fair on so many levels. Here's a quick look: Price: $2000 (XC10) vs $800 (GX85) I think the discussion should probably stop there. The form-factors are way different too. The XC10 doesn't look like a hybrid video/photo camera at all IMO- just a video camera. I'm sure it has great ergonomics and I trust @Mattias Burling 's "5 Reasons to buy the XC10." The footage looks nice.

For me GoPro slaughtered DJI. I don't care about its speed or other specs, I care about the fact that for the same price I get a GoPro 5 that I will use on ground a lot, a handheld gimbal that is amazing, and a drone that is a perfect mix between size and stability. This thing is too small and shaky (see the verge video). Anyone using a GoPro for action videos should get the Karma instead.

Not sure about the image quality and stabilization. Seems a step back from the X3 even I think..? That said... we'll need to await further footage and reviews. But man, that thing is sexy like hell. Compact like nothing else! And unlike GoPro, this does have more safety features. The worst thing to happen is it hitting something and crashing down. This certainly wins as a quadcopter... not sure if it wins when it comes down to image quality. But I have a feeling there's bound to be a lot of comparison videos once these start to ship out! Crazy exciting times! Although I'm still not sure this is worth my trouble... operating aerial video platforms like this remains a legal hassle in some if not most areas. Used to be a grey zone and an expensive endavour... but with it getting cheaper and cheaper and getting in the hands of people who are unresponsible with it... I'm not looking forward to be getting one so I can shoot some gorgeous footage of... pastures... just about the only place remaining you're allowed to shoot (if you're lucky... and with permission from the land owner).

Location, the camera movements, and camera angles doesn't make sense. If you muted the sound, you might guess they are planning for some criminal heist. One thing that they are clearly doing that they shouldn't be is making sure every shot is in motion. Doesn't fit this interview at all. I'm guessing the purpose was to add energy. Many ways they could have done this rather than have the camera always moving on mostly still subjects. The first half of the interview, do they explain why they are standing in a junkyard or what seems like an abandoned house? Had they explained why they were standing there by introducing the location, maybe it would have worked better. A tripod, slider shots, maybe a more lively location for the first half, and cuts to live concert footage would have been much more fitting.

I'm a Kings of Leon fan (as well as a fan of many other bands/artists). I found this interview about their new album. Now i'm not one to criticize work but considering it was on apple I would assume it to be pretty good quality. Yet it was very, very distracting for me to watch, not so much due to the actual shots but the motion. It seemed almost as it had bad warp stabilizer applied or bad rolling shutter? I couldn't put my finger on it but I almost feel some of the camerawork was a bit unwatchable for my tastes. Thoughts anyone?? Curious to hear! Also additional note: 1) I like handheld style footage as well as stable, locked down footage. But some of this seems like it could've benefited from a monopod as some of the shots feels really shot on the fly but I personally don't love it.

Only lasted a few seconds and switched off. Abysmal. You want to see some of the rubbish that passes for Professional Wedding Videography in the UK. Yet many have hundreds of clients and have to turn people away. They charge £650 to £750 and you would be just as well off using the footage from the CCTV. Everything on sticks, except a few slider shots of flowers and champagne glasses, no emotion, no storyline, crap music, yet they are raking in £35k a year. I can't even get a gig for free.

I think the GoPro/Karma looks way way better, what comes to color and motion. Stabilization on Mavic doesn't seem to be that great, you can see a lot of jello/jitter.

The chef analogy doesn't work. A chef is a person who is highly skilled at varying types of cooking. Being a chef does not make you a professional. A sallary does. The guy at McDonald's is a professional burger flipper unlike a guy who flips one at home for the fun of it. "A professional is a member of a profession or any person who earns their living from a specified professional activity." So yes, all you need is a client, that pays you. The videographers that do it just to make a buck are professional. Its their profession.

The video in the first post is a 720p version not uploaded by DJI. Below is their 4K version. I think this one looks quite a bit better.

DJI X3 has a flat profile called D-Log and I expect to be the same on Mavic. Mavic bitrate is 60 Mbits the same as the X3 (phantom 4) and Gopro 4 and 5. This tells nothing about the final quality but the specs are similar. I can understand why you'd want something smaller than the C100. Personally, I'd go GX85 simply because you can practically pocket it with the kit lens. Then just accept the limitations it has... don't want limitations? ... take the C100. Ultimately, you have to decide what you can live with. There are so many (too many?) great choices. For me, the XC10 wasn't even possible because you can't really "start" with it. You simply have it or you don't. Also, I don't need the extra features it offers and the form-factor is too strange and big for me... I might scare my daughter with it.

I don't know if that is a correct method of determining exposure difference, but after cropping the NXL RAW in Lightroom to the same frame and turn it into BW, it takes about 0.5 stops of pushing the exposure until histograms are roughly matched.

Before anyone starts thinking of buying this camera for its autofocus, I will say that the AF is more built for stills autofocus. Most of the native lenses (even the 18-55) have dated autofocus tech that just don't move fast enough for fast c-af, especially in video. And as you may have seen in some videos, it tends to keep hunting for focus even when it's already locked on to something that's not moving.

It's just too bad that the GoPro doesn't have a follow mode.

Well, the colors of your footage looks nice to my eyes! Thanks for the kind words!! I feel like I'm getting better with every video, but some of my old footage is not that great at all. I try to learn from past mistakes and pick up tips here and there. The most important thing I have learned though is to WB, expose and light to have the best starting point (probably goes with out saying but if something is overlooked it makes it so much harder to correct in post). Basically getting to know how to set up your camera for best results. I shot that video in the summer on my own actually using a Aputure VS-2 as a monitor with a long HDMI cable. I waited until the sun had past the windows and set WB to 6000 something. Then I underexposed by about a stop as especially skin tones look a lot better that way without a log profile on this camera . Standard 0, -5, -5, 0 and that's it. I used Color Finale to adjust contrast, and adjusted WB with color wheels and curves. I spend some time using the built-in Apple color picker tool to check WB on the black kitchen counter. It's a little time consuming but it was definitely worth it. So actually a pretty simple setup and grade in the end I tried for so long to get good looking natural colors and I finally feel that I actually know what I'm doing. Next up will be trying to learn how to make more creative look's for other stuff. I get why you want the Canons though, the footage is really nice!

I think the plastic protective dome might degrade image quality quite a bit by generating reflections and flares. I mean, if that's the best footage they have to show for... then I'm not all that into it (the girl running on the beach just looked washed out or something? The shot at 2:43 I would never have included. There's like washed out bits and purple). What the hell is going on here?? Surely they can not strap a big camera to it, given it's compact size, so I think there's some consessions going on. If like the video shows, you're hiking about and absolutely don't want to be weighed down... want something that is aware of its surroundings and have a high level of automization... this is the one to get. However... I think that if I were to get one, I'd more lean towards the Karma... I also think bigger and heavier platforms allow for a smoother flight. Will have to see how this pans out... Coming from a screenwriting perspective, I have always thought content is king with films. And being a NO BUDGET, one man band filmmaker I have to make successions in a lot of areas. I really respect the craft of cinematography, but I would barely consider myself a capable camera operator, so DPAF is one of those priceless tools that cannot go overlooked for me. Everything I have seen from C100s look great and have more than enough quality for a film at my level. Hell, I would be happy making a feature with just the XC10, if I could get, shallow depth of field, close ups with a comparative 50mm focal length. Since that isn't possible with the XC10, I am compelled to get a second camera. Since I write mostly thriller and horror screenplays, that are slow burn with little dialog, I'm unsure if a C100 is overkill since the XC10 will be my meat and potatoes camera, but since I may be the world's worst colorist, I am worried that I will have major issues trying to match 80D footage with XC10 CLOG. I know I sound like a broken record, just constant concerns I am having. I guess I could always buy an 80D and test it out and if it doesn't work I can return it to BH.

Damn. I can't see anyone even wasting money on the GoPro version.

@DaveAltizer chose the right word; slaughter comes to mind. Both are good options, the gopro comes with the hand stabilizer but the ease of use, size and sensors for not throwing the thing against a wall its going to make it a no brainer. Hell, It's the first time I'm thinking I could use a drone in weddings as a solo operator, hit, get the shot and run, go figure!

I love the C100 image but a huge part of the reason I got it (I came from a speed boosted GH4 and BMPCC - never owned a C100 MK1) is the use-ability factor. It's just a fantastic all-rounder. For the majority of work I do it's just so painless to get a great image and audio in 99% of situations. I was very reluctant to give up the BMPCC and still love the image but it wasn't practical for work. For narrative stuff I don't think there's such a compelling case for a C100 as you have time and space for shooting and the image will be judged a bit more vs "real" cinema cameras like BM, RED, Alexa. But if you like the image why not? C300 looked great in Blue is the Warmest Colour. If you find a good deal you may find you love it and if not you can probably sell it without loosing too much. Check out Noam Kroll's C100 review from ages ago - he tried it for narrative vs his BMCC and liked it a lot.

It looks like a bad case of individuals trying too hard to be the star of the show. I can already hear the interviewer asking the camera man for "some cool like slowmo shots like following me up to this mansion all like dreamy and stuff, very epic you know?". Then the cameras during the interview are swaying around with arbitrary movements like the last two getting kicked out of the bar when the ugly lights come on. The motions aren't related to the content or the emotions of the interview, in fact they are so obnoxious that they actually distract the guys being interviewed (you can see them looking over at the cam wondering if he's going to fall over into a whiskey coma). IBIS can only do so much! Rig it up and stand the f*** still! Those silly zooms at 2:00. OH boy, didn't watch much past that but racked a little further and they just pop out again. Very good.

Judging by your latest video posted here and for example videos from Jase and Javier Lopes (Abandon) it seems pretty close to me in terms of image, but I haven't tried the XC10 off course Would love to see some side by side comparisons! Be sure to post them here.

No, it's not close at all. The XC10 wins in every category except for shallow depth of field. The XC10 is a professional camera. The 1080p in it is almost as good as the 4K in the GX85. I actually like it more. But I do like lenses and there is just something really cool about using small c-mount and m4/3 lenses with 5-Axis ibis. My $20 Cosmicar 25mm and my $80 Sigma 19mm just work brilliantly with that camera. I am definitely going all in with Canon. I just need to decide if it's worth keeping a $600 camera for specific projects that can benefit from the specific look and footprint the GX85 offers.

Front lens locked. You may lock rear, move for focus front lens. In future I will make bellows, because in some cases rear and side light prevents the image. With the camera fixed on a tripod the joy stick focus guidance might be a good idea, but on a monopod or handheld it will cause the same amount of jitter as focusing manually (not talking about focus by wire on the OIS lenses). I'm pretty satisfied with the stabilization of the 18-55 and it's a sharp lens. For recording at 55 you really have to freeze, of course. If you dial in f4 (or higher) at 18 mil it will be a constant aperture lens, but it's not good at zooming in or out (if you're into this), because of the flicker you'll get (like the Panasonic lenses). But you don't have to adjust your ND at least.

There are two type of Speed Classes that matter for a SD Card. Bus Speed and Video Speed (Minimum Sequential Write). UHS-II is Bus Speed and for video that means nothing, as for video, there are some standards, U3 means 30MB/s, the new Standards are V30 (30MB/s), V60 (60MB/s) and V90 (90MB/s). So far, there is no card with V60 or V90, so although there are cards capable of sustaining more than 30MB/s, I assume that if they could guarantee 480mbps or 720mbps, they would say so. Which is also weird since ProRes 4K 10-bit 422 should be more than 720mbps, so who knows?

I agree. I prefer the dual-pixel focusing system on my 7D MII, but the 6D is no slouch. Definetly a different "look". If you can jump for C100, go for it. Seems like a much better deal now that the newer version is available. Maybe even the XC10, as other users have said. Big increase in overall quality.

I just came across a clip I shot with the GX85 a couple months back and every time I've seen it, I am really blown away by this camera. I've been trying to go all in with Canon and invest in their glass so I can use DPAF, but then every time I watch a clip from this little beast, I get more confused.

Anyone know how the G80/85 will compare to the gx80/85 for video? Trying to decide which camera to get next. With the image stabilization being such an important feature, I think either (if similar otherwise) are good candidates rather than waiting for a gh5 which likely will cost much more.

Thanks! Yeah, the color definitely seems to be improved. Waiting for the GH5 myself. I really miss the ergonomics of the GH4. I used window lights with 2 x 110 cm round reflectors. I have big windows on the left and waited until the sun had passed, between 12:00 - 16:00. So basically just indirect window light with reflectors. One of the great things about the GX85 is that you can underexpose by a little and adjust contrast in post to achieve better colors and DR without getting any noise on low ISO. With the GH4 I easily got noise in the shadows in my dark kitchen, so it's really refreshing being able to shoot underexposed clean images and pull it up in post. @Cinegain The Leica 15mm f/1.7 is really nice on the GX85

Switched from using Gamma DR to Gamma C. Here is a screenshot from some footage I'm working on now. Gamma C, -1 Saturation, -10 Sharpness, -3 Contrast, +10 MB level. Graded with IWLTDAP Seona LUT @ 45%. Used 15% Gorilla Grain, Fine.

Yeah! It just takes it all in! It's pretty dang sweet. It's the go-grab camera and I love the basic style with the dials and rings. There's something pure and fuzzless about it. It's pretty solid up to ISO1250 (but there's noise at lower levels already, that's really where the G7 and GX80 stepped up the game). Yet... no live feed out over HDMI, would've loved an articulated touchscreen... audio is a tough one. But yeah, as with all cameras, there's things it is and things it isn't. The kitlens of the GX80, as seen on the GM-line, is a weird one, I was already trying to make it turn when I was like 'oh shit, it's a zoomring only', it's so weird. xD Not sure you would keep it on there all the time unless you need the sleek profile and zoom flexibility. I think it's more fun with a ZY Optics/Zhongyi/Mitakon 25mm f/0.95, Lumix 20mm f/1.7, 42.5mm f/1.7 (OIS) or something like that. Think the Leica 15mm f/1.7 would be a great go-to lens for it (still eyeballing that one hard!).

I use it for zoom and sharpness. It crops in on the middle which is the sharpest part of the image circle. Mostly with these bright primes at f/0.95 they're quite soft, especially in the corners, so you're more likely to use 'em at f/1.4-f/2 where they get noticeably better, unless it's a stylistic choice to go for the smooth dreamy look. Another thing is zooms. There are some great f/2.8 zooms out there that you can boost (making 'em more sensitive than the Panasonic and Olympus f/2.8 options (that can't be boosted)). And the f/1.8 Sigma is a delight of course! Super useful for the range and sensitivity. Metabones XL makes a lot of glass out there get around the Hollywood f/2 mark. It allows adaptation of all sorts of glass with all kind of price tags. Maybe like me you use a Nikon body for stills as well, which makes your lenses serve double duty. EF mount is a little nicer in terms of mounting flexibility (Nikon is prone to have some issues with certain mounts concerning infinity focus, which requires additional glass correction elements, of which the adapters degrade image quality pretty significantly I would say)... however, I have no native EF lenses and do not require the electronics which makes the EF SB XL the more expensive option. And it's nice to just mount a Nikon lens directly without additional adapters... so I went with the MB SP XL for Nikon and for EF have a Mitakon Lens Turbo II, which doesn't quite have the same reduction, but it's tremendous value nontheless.

Is anyone shooting on their GX85 and have some videos to show? I finally got a workflow that I am very happy with. It may not be the most interesting video for you guys but please have a look and tell me how what you think about the colors? It was shot in standard 0, -5, -5, 0 with only natural light and reflectors. The edit was done in FCPX using Color Finale.

I think if vlogging is your focus, you need a flippy screen to see what's in frame. The M5 does not have that. Just get the 80D instead. Edit: oh it has a down-flipping screen apparently. I would prefer a sideways though. Can't even put it on a surface/tripod and monitor at the same time?

Fujifilm X-T2 Here some SOOC footage with different settings. Please ignore the framing! It was a quick & dirty test (and I actually don't know how I changed my position in the last moment). I think reducing the color in the camera settings gives more freedom in grading. But to exploit the film simulations it might be good to leave it on 0 (I even consider pushing color). I hope, that Fujifilm develops an additional motion picture film simulation as part of the firmware upgrade (like they did with Classic Chrome). Please, give me some feedback in terms of information loss and regarding the benefit of increasing the colour of the film simulation.

Same here. The main advantage of FF is the small DoF, in which case aliasing artifacts are less and next to invisible. Also the A7rii FF mode has much less rolling shutter as well so that is another reason that is the preferred mode for handheld use. Then crop+clear zoom just gives you all the range that you need in one tiny package (in this case 35mm gives you 35-105):
