It mystifies me all these people considering Canon, if you do a 50/50 mix of stills/video and you want great internal colors then get yourself a Nikon D750. It performs really really well: And you get a much better stills camera too than a Canon 5Dmk3! Or if you'd like 4K get a Nikon D500, which gives you near Nikon D5 stills performance, all at a small portion of the price of a Canon 5Dmk4. And I bet Nikon will bring 4K to their affordable lower level cameras before Canon does.

You can set the aspect ratio in the menu to 16:9, so that it always stays the same. I'm very interested to find out if 4k photo mode produces better video than using normal video modes.

Having mic & headphone jack is still worthwhile for those ultra lowbudget or ultra fast turnaround jobs, or even just simply so you can stick a little shotgun mic on the camera and get better scratch audio for syncing than use the camera's own microphone.

I shot this a couple months ago, and had a blast! It's always changing, but my anamorphic rig is getting more useable. Kowa 16-H (still amongst the best ana glass.) SLR Magic Rangefinder (could loose the blue blobs but otherwise does a great job.) RedStan Clamps (what more needs to be said? They're the best, and they're red. Makes Canon L-glass jealous.) Konica Hexanon 40mm f1.8 (this lens just works. Really well. Set to f/4 and forget.) Samsung NX1 (yeah I'm one of those guys. But this thing pays the bills, and will continue to do so for at least one more season.) EDIT: yes, the anamorphic is not perfectly aligned. That's actually on purpose to add to the vintage low-fi aesthetic.

I purchased a GH4 a few years back under the guidance and direction of some helpful members here. I have like the camera in many aspects and learned that I am probably more implicitly biased to video and photo look of FF cameras. I am a complete amateur/hobbyist but appreciate the technical side of the artwork and the discussions that go on here. I am going to sell my GH4 soon and want to replace it. What I do: 1. Personal photography/video for myself/family/friends 2. Mini video documentaries for my history and special education students where I may interview people etc. What I liked about the GH4: *Superior sharpness/clarity compared to my 5d MK iii I sold to purchase the GH4 What I dislike about the GH4: *#1 is definitely ISO performance, I understand that I can purchase neat video or get LED lights but again this is not my profession although I'd like the ability to deliver as high quality content I can doing this by myself *I miss the FF look and bokeh Options: A7R II (seems to be a better camera than a7S II for 50/50 video and stills) - I like the MP count since I'd like to print and frame photos but dislike Sony colors with a passion 5D MK IV - I think the video is fairly comparable to the 1DX II but not as clear/sharp as I'd like even at 4K C100 MK II + 5D MK II (use ML raw at times for video) - I think I like this combo the best since it would provide great video/audio on the c100 II and good photos with the 5d I really love Canon colors and have yet to see too many images that do a good enough job. I like that the C100 II has built in ND filters and I can mount my Rode NTG 2 on it for good audio. I wish there was a hybrid DSLR that could be both photo/video but it seems like I am leaning toward separate tools for separate functions. I love the video look on this Netflix documentary: I believe this was mostly shot on a Canon C300 Mark II Questions: Which of the above choices do you think would fit my needs the best? Are there any other options/combos that may be better suited and I should look into?

Sorry should've specified: G80/85. Everyone is saying g80 and gx85 will have identical video, but from what I've seen this is not so... maybe @andy lee can confirm;)

IMHO if we keep the video aside, for a moment, the DJI Mavic is way more advanced than the GoPro Karma, simply by the insane level of its features (travel range, speed, ability to tackle obstacles, follow users, respond to gestures for commands, sending great quality video to the controller/ smartphone, being like 1/3rd or 1/4th the size of the GoPro Karma, etc etc). These features alone push it into a different league. Then add the price difference. The GoPro throws in a removable camera, and a removable gimbal, but for a lot more (many hundred dollars more). If DJI had a removable camera module, with a built in stabilizer or a stabilizer stick, the GoPro would have been a joke. I doubt whether Anyone would have bought it. As a Drone they aren't even in the same category, atleast where features are concerned.

Tutti frutti! Yeah. There is something off about it though even when focussed correctly. It's like it renders distant scenes into one big blue greyish atmosphere. Only the foreground subject looks as you'd expect. That is why top down mode looks the best (to me), because basically it's a flat plane without any depth to be messed up. Also something unnatural about the colors maybe. I don't know. But... it's almost a 180 from the first impressions, so I'm starting to warm up to it. Been flying toy quadcopters before (after planes and helis) and tried a couple spy cam DIY solutions, but when things got lawyered, I just gave up on stepping it up. Still don't know if I have the guts to just launch it in the air around here... but I get where the Italians are coming from, that this would be the more innocent option. I suppose this is more of a camera I would take to Spain or Thailand and shoot some footage of silly beach fun. I guess for actual aerial video production work, I'd either need to fully commit and do it as a legit business, or hire someone that has already done just that.

Tha last video kinda sold me too (kinda). BUT...The first comparison is a joke..He compares a camera with fixed focus to infinity with a camera with adjustable focus on a subject that's 50-70cm away...There is no way that this is not stupid...Actually it is stupid enough for someone to stop the video and wait for the next one to make conclusions...Also, if the footage is legit, mavic's image quality is fine for dayshots but very weak at nightshots. P4 seems to give a more pleasing image at those nightshots with slightly better DR and less noise. Overall, mavic is starting to gain some ground and its totally DJI's fault that it lost its popularity last week. When you produce groundbraking products like this you just don't send the prototypes to fools and if you do, at least try to include a brochure with BIG black letters in a sentence like "tap to focus..."

The Blackmagic Video Assist 1080p one is actually 495 dollars so it makes no sense to buy anything else as the Blackmagic one has Waveform and everything else including Zebra's, 1080p recording to ProRes basically you get more for the same price and it is better build quality and it does audio. So basically, if you need a monitor and absolutely have to spend up in the 300 - 400 price range, the Blackmagic one is the only one that you should be focused on unless you need a very big screen but then again I do not buy anything made out of plastic and take it out in the field unless it is for studio use strictly.

4k export is enabled for the free version of resolve. What's not included is 3d stuff, noise removal and lens distortion fix.

You could also consider HitFilm as a cheap one of payment, or an older copy of Sony Vegas Pro which are dirt dirt cheap. Either would be better than the using the restricted newbie orientated Premiere Elements.

I've never checked the minimum, but it's near a foot possibly less. Max is around 9 feet as you said.

Yeah give it a shot dude! Again I could be incorrect as I don't use resolve and am going off my memory. But on the website there is a super long list of comparisons and it looks like you are getting a super video editor, great color correcting platform and all for FREE. Considering you are wanting to save money (that could go toward better lens/lighting/equipment) I'd do this for sure

Thanks! That Davinci Reslove looks great! I don't plan on exporting anything bigger than 1080, the only reason I'd be using 4k at the moment is for editing options.

Premiere Elements would be better than photoshop. BUT I believe DaVinci Resolve is a free download. I'm not sure of the drawbacks but I believe you can't export a 4k video, other members on here can chime in. But maybe download Resolve before buying anything? Could save you money and I think you'd get a fuller featured video editor than Elements.

I've looked at getting Premiere Pro CC, but it would be out of my budget to get it. I currently just have the Photography sub from Adobe, Premiere would have to be got as a separate program and I can't justify the cost of that at the moment. This is why I had thought about a cheaper standalone program instead. Would Premiere Elements be a better choice than using Photoshop? I could pick it up fairly cheaply I probably should have mentioned that I'm trying my best to keep costs down as this is purely a hobby. I've been looking into using cheap vintage lenses with the GX80 and I'm delighted to see that that seems to be a popular option.

Just wanted to take a moment to congratulate Andrew on a remarkable picture profile. I have both James Miller's log profile and EOSHD C-Log. The latter, Eos C-log, is remarkable and I can confirm works beautifully on 5DM4 in 4K & HD. I noticed quite a bit of digital noise on the Miller Clog, while the EOSHD log seems to crush the noise on the dark end. I noticed banding on only a few under-exposed areas, but actually it faired much better than the NX1 (which owned for 1 year and could not abide by the over sharpening and banding). I know there's a healthy amount of 5DM4 bashing in the world right now, but as someone who uses the C100, Digital Bolex, and 1DC regularly, I love the form factor of the 5D and love the image. But that's just me. I am also vigorously testing some throwbacks on the 5DM4: VisionColor, Prolost, and Cinestyle. Yes if you are paying for CC just go ahead and download Premiere Pro. There are numerous tutorials both on the adobe site and youtube. You could try Lynda.com and take a course on there as well (I haven't personally done this but have heard good things). I also own photoshop but would strongly suggest not using it as a video editor.

I'd say bad, since it's not designed to edit video. Kind of like editing stills in Word, which you can. If you are serious about video, sooner or later you'll have to learn to use editing software -not power director nor elements-. Since you are already subscribed to Adobe CC, check how much would it be if you included Premiere CC. At first you may be lost, but that steep learning curve has to be endured and Premiere is as standard and easy as editing programs can be. The upside of this is that, since the concepts are the same, adapting to a different version o program is not that hard. Yes it would be present. Depending on the type of noise, the resizing could improve it or not. If you de-noise first and then resize you could get good results since denoising usually softens the image and the resizing would increase the perceived sharpness.

I believe mine is a higher end model. That mic seems like a good option but here in the UK it costs as much as the Audio-Technica ATR3350. I'll have look at this mic as well. Thanks for the suggestion.

If you want to be legal 100% you have to take a course, pass an exam, get a license, pay an insurance, etc. DJI Phantoms are sold everywhere and nearly nobody do all those things to be legit. So the problem is if they catch you, I would prefer to be catched with a Mavic, than one of the others. Living in Italy forces you think how to force the law, amico!!!!! ;-DD

I think you'd make a wise choice in getting 2 separate cameras. I never understood the need for using one camera for both unless it's just for fun or travel.

Yeah, that's dumb. Apparently the FZ2500 doesn't have it in 4K either... But the FZ2500 has the intriguing 200mbps in 1080p. Mix the high bitrate (all I) with V-Log and 5-Axis IBIS and it could be a pretty great camera. I think it outputs 10 bit 4:22 as well. If the LX10 had that high bitrate 1080p, I would probably be a customer, without it or 5-Axis in 4K... Then I'll pass.

I see what you mean. It's the famous Canon color palette. Obvious virtue. I know I repeat myself, but I recommend to be suspicious with unique features and obvious virtues. What contributes to these skintones are good profiles and the right (Canon) glass. Let me cite Andrew Reid from his article Summoning the Devil: .. and he refers to the Sony A7rii of course of which you write: Believe me, I hate them psychotically. Fortunately, by best friend loves Sony and Canon and has some kind of color blindness, because he can't see what distinguishes them colorwise. I am getting a lot of A7rii & FS7 footage to edit and grade from him, and I occasionally borrow the A7rii. Though I admit that nobody can link to a Sony clip in which the skin is as good as in your Netflix example, I know you can get very close. So close, indeed, that even for the ugly hater, me, the difference ceases to be relevant. Take this clip: It's shot with not very good settings (you wouldn't dial up saturation and sharpness). But yet, with just the tiniest bit of secondary CC (I saved it as a one-click-filter actually) you could make this skin look very healthy and alive. To a degree, I promise, where original Canon footage looks as if it needed some work when cut side by side. Would have been impossible with Sony lenses in this case! The same principle can be applied to all advantages and disadvantages of the cameras you compare. Perhaps you should make a table including your accustomed GH4. Think hard about the weaknesses and how you can compensate them. The best camera is not the camera with the best specs but the one you know by heart and whose flaws you successfully overcame.

You need to use 4k Photo mode and set it to Burst Start/Stop. Press the shutter to start, and press it again to stop- you'll record 30p for up to 30 minutes with sound. The ND method is also a great way. By the way, the crop is visible before starting the recording (as soon as you put it in 4k Photo mode). It might have been the opposite with the LX100.

Hello, I picked up a broken (bad power switch) Sony A3000 for cheap and have decided to modify it. The 20mp sensor is good for a consumer camera, but the lcd & evf are horrible low-res. I noticed how the A3000 and A5000 look very similar internally. The board of the A3000 is setup for an HDMI port, but one was not added, while the A5000 has one. The idea is to add and HDMI port and hopefully mic jack. I plan to use an external lcd, 3d print a new body and lcd housing based on this: http://www.eoshd.com/2012/07/mystery-camera-revealed-sony-nex-5n-in-cine-housing-with-cooling-mod/ and end up with a decent camera for video. Soldering and building this is no problem, since I own a 3d printer and do circuit-board/electrical repair for a living. The trouble is the firmware, does anyone have info on how to access and modify the firmware for hdmi output and other useful features for video?

Here is the final edited video of that screenshot posted before. I must say that I've tweaked the selected Reid's LUT quite a bit to get the look I wanted. Some of the shots as you will see are a bit overexposed but the theme was black dresses and I wanted the dresses to translate onto the screen better so I overexposed on purpose. Also tried making the highlight roll-off as smooth as possible. Grade was done in Resolve. Comments are welcome!

Interesting test, Jazz. It looks like the MKiii works nicely with Reid-Log am curious of a comparison between his and James Miller's LOG-Like profiles. I'm also interested in hearing more from Andrew on the topic. He seems to be pretty busy lately and MIA from some of the questions asked. The good thing about the MKiii is you would be getting two beasts from the camera... Reid-Log and ML Raw. Could be a great tool in the arsenal.

Here a little test I made yesterday with my father's cameras and my GH4. Andrew's C-Log wins clearly on GH4's V-Log: in my opinion GH4 is perfect in "Natural" profile - better then Canon for resolution, frame rate etc... - but with its LOG profile it fall apart. Mr Reid breathes new life in Canon's cameras

Weighed design 1.7 kg / 3.75 lb‬ . Lenses in rims weigh around 1 kg / 2.2 lb.

I don't know a ton about anamorphic but that second one to me looks amazing. Classic even!

Cameras, drones, it's always the same thing... they have the oppertunity to make it the ultimate thing out there... but they all just focus on one aspect instead of doing it all. I guess that's what running a business is about... not neccessarily beating the competition, but doing something different and leaving room for improvement so you can sell another one at a later time. Ugh. Need more people like Elon Musk that try to push the boundaries of what is possible with technology.

I strongly dislike the fisheye look of the gopro's and the straightening out effect gives very smeary and unsharp corners.
