The problem is that we are getting lots of superficial reviews from pretty untalented image makers working far too fast with equipment they don't master in non-professional situations, all, apparently, desperately trying to get views.

First impressions of playing with G85 along with the GH4 and GX85 today: Noise. The GH4 is silent. The G85 is quieter than GX85. Maybe just because the body on the G85 offers more insulation, but the GX85 ibis "noise" was quite a bit louder. Now, I didn't notice this noise at all in real world filming earlier with the GX85 so the chance of noticing the sound from the G85 seems highly unlikely. In fact, I wonder how you would record the noise unless you tape a mic onto the camera body and block outside noise getting to it by covering it with tape. The noise is not the lens. It is coming from in the body. 2nd, the stabilisation, well I'll put some of my recorded files together and see. My first impression, before examining the files, is that the G85 IBIS is definitely superior for holding the shot steady. For very slow pans it also produces incredibly stable shots. I think it did start bouncing around a bit more under more vigourous panning but I think this is a result of the better IBIS at each end of the movement. So maybe in video mode they might tweak the settings in the future but it's not a video deal breaker even like it is. Focus speed - instant. Shutter noise - silent? Definately wow factor there. Handling - very nice. Better placement of play button. Better grip, especially thumb location.

@kidzrevil you needed a C100markII from the beginning! A few months ago I did a documentary series for a small TV station, in the northern part of Greece (Macedonia and Thrace territories, I am not even sure if you know where Greece is!) , 12-14 hours of work per day/ a lot of miles/6 days a week for a full month (and a bit). I could choose between a dozen of cameras (GH4/5D markII and III/Canon 70D/a couple of Sony 1/3inch video cameras/C300/my NX kit/ e.t.c) I didn't even think about it, I grabbed a C100markII, an 18-135 STM, and a couple of primes (I never used one, never, we had 4-7 locations every day, and it was me and a producer/driver type of guy). I was sending the footage every week, and the people in our base had to edit a whole episode in a few days, so, no really time for post. I believe this project was only possible because of the C100.

A nice collection of SOOC 4k shots using various lenses. Fuji's IS and continuous AF is pretty effective. Color and detail are fantastic.

NXL Canon 50mm F8 (sharpening test).

I prefer the 50mbps. Looks better and takes less space. And Natural all the way! Generally with NR and Sharpening at -4 (-5 actually does some weird stuff), Saturation and Contrast at -2. You can pull the shadows pretty well, but there's generally nothing hiding in the highlights to pull out later. Err on the side of caution, and don't let the histogram drift too high if you're not okay with clipping your hotspots (the roll off is nice, so it's not the end of the world if you do). Also, avoid bright point sources at high ISOs. They can sometimes produce these weird blobby artefacts that can't be removed in post. The GH4 suffers from this too, and I'm not sure why.

But just the trailer makes me want a DVX100:) Would love to have a 3 CCD cam with HD and writing to card. These are still not to be found under 1000+ usd. DVX100 for around 300. Did some messy filming with an EX1 a few days ago. Color blooming caused by purple gels was like 8bit Nintendo. Other than that, pretty colors, also with red and blue gels:) and lowlight like apsc canon.

My settings are -2 contrast, -2 sharpness, 0!! color, -2 noise reduction. Natural. Mostly adjusting Kelvin by hand, with A3G3 setting from John Matthews and jase. I agree on your and others findings, to not lessen color below 0. I am very happy with the G6. But I think the GH3´s codec will hold up better. This filmmaker´s works I find inspiring with its visual approach and stellar example for the use of GH3, also his sharing of knowledge.

I hate that there is this rush to call anyone a BM loyalist when all you're doing is pointing out that what they claim actually isn't true. To whit....Windows 7 corrupts clips on an Ursa Mini with V4.0 software. Windows anything has nothing to do with the firmware in the camera being able to record files or indeed corrupt them. In this case, the files WERE NOT corrupted. It's this kind of idiotic misinformation that is irksome to me. Calling it out and being wrong seems to get you labeled a BM loyalist. What does that make the guy making the claim that it corrupts the files ? JB

Okay, gotcha. The Panasonics are great. If you want 4K or need it, the GX85, or G80 will be great. The GM5 is supposed to be great, Jase got some awesome footage with his GM1, but for the price of a GM5, I would consider a GH3, they can be found pretty cheap nowadays and they have a couple extra features the GM cameras don't have. Just some thoughts. Do what suits you best. As far as the M is concerned, to use EF lenses, you will need the Canon EF to EF-M adapter... I think it costs a hundred bucks. Honestly, if you just want it for messing around and family videos, I would look for the M10 or M3... I bought a new body from Japan for less than $200. It has a flip screen and focus peaking and is just a fun camera. The AF is probably better than the original M as well. But with the original M you can load Magic Lantern on it and get a bunch of extra hacked features that are pretty fun too.

I have been interested in 1080p solely for a while now. To me it seems any 1080p Raw is great. 5dmkiii ML Raw will probably have the most dynamic range and best color. But so far the Nikon 1080p has been my favorite. The Flat Profile is just awesome. So if you want full frame, the D750. If you want aps-c (S35) then I would say the D5500 for a great simple camera. The issue with it is there are no exposure aids with manual lenses. The D7200 will give you zebras and meter with ai-s lenses but the 60p crops an extra 1.3x over the normal 1.5x crop of aps-c. The 24p is normal aps-c though. The 5500 only crops the aps-c crop in 24p and 60p. And then there's the flagship aps-c... The D500 that has 4K with a big crop but the 1080p modes all look good and they have IBIS... I think it's digital IS though. Also if you want great 1080p with C-Log and DPAF, there's always the C100ii. If you don't need the DPAF or 60p, get the regular C100. Edit: I originally wrote the D7200 will give you peaking... I meant to write zebras.

Just tried it on 60D & get 11/12 seconds in 10bit DR! If you've got a 5D3, this is what you can get: "So i tried 3K 2,35:1 23,975fps- 14 bits - 134 frames -12 bit - 294 frames -10 bit - over 3 minutes recording, didnt check longer 1920x648 (16:9 after stretch) 60 fps -14 bit 308 frames - 10bit 1425 frames 1920x648 50fps seems to be continous in 10 bit. 1920x1080 37fps - 14bit - 239 frames - 10bit - over minute, didnt check longer. highest possible resolution 3584x1320 23,976 10bit - 160 frames (vs 61 with 14bits)."

I am currently looking for a similar solution. The only solution I got is transcoding to Cineform but I do it in Ae for use with ACR.

The OIS looks like it is in a "photo mode" when it try to keeps stable, and then suddenly changes to another point. Not very impressed ...

And after doing a little shooting with them, mostly 100-400mm and 12-35: G85: I can’t hear any camera noise on the audio tracks from any of the cameras. It would take a very quiet environment I think. The IBIS on the G85 seems quite superior to the GX85 but... sticky pans. I would prefer to buy the G85 though. A point was made about rotation around the vertical axis. I'm not sure if I agree now. The angle the camera moves through using this zoom lens is really insignificant. Plus, there is no way you would hold this combo out from your body doing a pan.

I think the M5 is based off the Poweshot cameras, so I don't think ML could work with it.

Great tips, thanks. With the GX85 I had started underexposing by about a half a stop and liked the results better than ettr, so good to know. How is the in camera audio... Is it usable with the rode video mic pro? Does it need the +20db?

I've been rocking the GH3 for a long time and love it. Solid 50mbps HD, 1080/60p, legendary battery life, ergonomically wonderful, headphone and mic jacks, and it even has a mini HDMI out, which is much more solid than micro. My only real issue with it is, as you all have pointed out, the lack of peaking, but the back screen is usually good enough to pull off of; plus, I use my Aputure VS-2 FineHD whenever I can, which has all that useful shit built in anyway.

huh ? They weren't corrupted. They just couldn't be READ by that particular unsupported setup. The user was able to put the card back in the camera and they played just fine. They just couldn't read them. And in fact, BM themselves responded saying they weren't sure what the actual problem was in that instance, but the glaring obvious starting position is that it's an unsupported setup. Carry on... Indeed, that's my take. It's "old" stock that they're clearing out that have the original V1 4K sensor. JB

Hey Merce, I would love to be able to share knowledge. I don´t know how to record things in Davinci in order to do a video of that. Best thing to share Davinci knowledge would be doing a video tutorial, I assume. So I would like do that soon! Would be my pleasure! GH3 seems like a great cam, like G6 on steroids, like a GH4 for 1080p. Interested to compare the 1080p of the gx80 with the g6 soon. GH3 has great battery life, HDMI out and 70mbps codec (the 50mbps one supposely better though) great 60p, from what i read about it. Like the ergos too. (only held a buddy´s gh4 in my hand a few times). Maybe open a thread gathering GH3 knowledge would be a nice idea, reviewing a classic and the thick 1080p as you called it before:) Oliver Daniel would be the person to ask about it, I think.

@John Matthews Hallo John! Thank you! I graded in Davinci. It is one node, making the difference- Lowering saturation in the blue channel, using the blue color curve. Besides that it is curve after curve, adding upon one another or counteracting one another. Also playing with saturation and desaturation in a variety of nodes, solving one problem after another. Main thing is gamma and a tendency to find threedimensional luminance, by exploring the green color information, going pretty wild. Then counteracting and correcting the greenish touches. In this example after the gamma and desaturation and "3d" work, I finished it muted supposely to look like Fuji, counteracting the overall bluish cast of the daylight. Was shot at 5400 Kelvin with your A3G3 recipe. Thanks for that!:) Filmed with autoshutter due to small crew of us 2, also used Fstop of 8.

I wish I could like this 3 times. Everything is just spot on man. A pretty lady, cool bikes, goofy acting, great camera work, and a wicked, slick grade. You need to teach me how to grade, because those distressed colors look sweet. What settings were you using? I went and bought another camera the other day... A GH3... So I need some pointers with Panasonic 1080p.

Hey, Merce! Now I am getting exited to check that baby out! Should be in my hands next week. Yes 2 cam set up sounds tempting. On dpreview 1080p looks of much lower resolution than LX100 though. But always good to test ourselves. Wow! What an awesome compliment. Thank you! Not sure if I fit that bill. I enjoy to shoot short pieces with the tech I got at my hands. I uploaded a fun video I did with my great ladyfriend and student collegue. We filmed and acted together, only us two with my G6, with the boosted 28mm FD and a cheapo 60dollar rig- and a cool blue bike. Gotta have a blue bike:) Originally we met for a coffee and then she suggested we should film a bike race. So we did without any planning. Was very happy with Panny colors again after the grade. Think GX85 will allow me more of this kind of spontaneous work.

Why do you still use Windows 7 anyway? That OS came out in 2009 it's 2016 already. Upgrade.

I have had the 23mm f1.4 for about two months now (using it on the X-T10). Really beautiful images from it. I've yet to actually process any raws on my computer - the jpegs are that good. I did have the XT2 briefly before that but decided to return it until it became cheaper. I was hoping for better AF performance/usability in video. Before the 23mm I used the 35mm f1.4. The image from this lens is also really nice and it produces a wonderful rainbow flare. But the AF on it is very poor by today's standards. The 18-55mm f2.8-4 is also a nice lens. Good images, AF, stabilisation. Having said all that im currently eyeing up an EOS M5. You might want to consider it as well since you have lots of EF lenses. No 4k and even the 1080p is mediocre but seems like the usability will be much better that the XT2 due to the body shape and touch screen. Also it has digital stabilisation like the NX1 did. Not ideal but better than nothing (maybe).

The new firmware (2.5) is out, and this is the firmware specifically crafted for GX80/85. Hopefully this addresses all the image-stabilization-related problems you might have. I had the GH3 for 3 years and the 1080p image was massively superior to pretty much every other DSLR camera at the time. I still use 1080p mostly on the FS5 and DJI X5R - the benefit of 4k is negligible if you are finishing in 1080p. I've found that because of the focus on 4k, manufacturers are putting out poor 1080p modes - which are actually worse than what they were before 4k hit the market. The A7SII for example, has a worse 1080p mode than the original. The issue with 4k in the lower budget cams now is that the bitrates are pretty low, there's worse rolling shutter issues and most cameras are limited to 4k 30p as the highest frame rate. 1080p is now the forgotten resolution - where 10bit and better color has been left behind in favour of more pixels. That said, the options we have now are ridiculously awesome. No excuses.

It's a major major improvement in video, not just because of the 4K. It's the reduce aliasing too. The HDMI out is 8 bit 422 however, the image is just a huge leap forward. Frankly what I've enjoyed most is using it as a stills camera. It handles so beautifully and the AF is insanely fast. The stills have plenty of punch and are also a noticeable jump in terms of res. I say that as a fan of the EM1 Mark 1. The Mark 2 is a giant leap forward just in stills mode. Same can be said for the video. I honestly think Olympus have hit one out of the park here. Even if I didn't have my relationship with Olympus I would be buying this camera. And yes, I'm planning to shoot some video to try and see what we can do with this camera, hopefully in the next few weeks. Let me know if you have any ideas ;-) JB
