What Trump means for new camera technology
samuel.cabral and one other reacted to Ed_David for a topic
Horrible 24 hours in the States. We have a new Orange president. What does this mean for Canon, Red, Panasonic, Sony, Arri? Well the dollar may crash. Maybe it won't - actually seems like it won't. So no one knows what's going to happen to trade. Will it help Red that manufactures in the States? Again, who knows? One thing we do know - this was a useless post.2 points -
IMHO, your Killary wasn't better. At least now her bloody hands are out of Libia, Irak, Siria, etc. Mine is another useless post, nothing to do with the camera world (sorry)2 points

I have done some measurments of recording times with the newest build (with fine resolution settings) Everything tested with 24fps 10bit on 5d3 113, CF sandisk extreme pro 128gb 160mb/s. 1320 is the maximum vertical resolution for 5d3 when recording raw video. 3168x1320 2.40:1 (1.81x crop) - 14 sec 3104x1320 2.35:1 (1.85x crop) - 18 sec 3104x1298 2.39:1 (1.85x crop) - 21 sec 3008x1280 2.35:1 (1.91x crop) - 38 sec 3008x1258 2.39:1 (1.91x crop) - 56 sec 2976x1266 2.35:1 (1.93x crop) - 60 sec 2976x1246 2.39:1 (1.93x crop) - 123 sec 2880x1226 2.35:1 (2x crop) - continous And wider aspect ratios - just for fun: 3520x1320 2.67:1 (1,63x crop) - 6 sec 3296x1320 2.50:1 (1.74x crop) - 12 sec Now I would like to see the comparison: 5d3 vs 5d4 - raw 10bit 3008x1258 (quite usable recording time - 56 sec) vs MJPEG 8bit 4k. Not so much different crops - 1.91x 5d3 vs 1.7x 5d4. Similar bitrates. That would be very interesting.2 points

First footage with Aivascope 1.75x Anamorphic - New Baby Hypergonar like lens
Juank and one other reacted to Ian Edward Weir for a topic
They claim you can go as wide as 25mm. I have not tried yet. 28mm is fine even in 16:9. Size and weight is great, quality build is great as well as mounting. I think with a variable diopter, a lens hood to cut down on flares and shooting at f4 or f5.6, you can get a very nice image. I think it will do a good job at translating what ever your taking lens is in terms of character. I love that it is 1.75x so you can get the 2.35:1 ratio or 2.76:1. I wish it was multicoated and wish it flared a little less but it's a nice lens that has potential. I took this still with it. More to come.2 points -
Good to hear! Might make the 12-35mm f/2.8 great again ( ). Yeah, I went with the comparable Olympus, because I figured, if I'm going to get the E-M1, I might as well go for the kit and save me some casheroos on the stunning lens and not get the Panasonic. Then when the 7-14mm f/2.8 PRO came out, had to get it. Especially because of its rectilinear design and quality of the lens (over the Panasonic counterpart). Still would like the 40-150mm f/2.8 PRO with teleconverter as well, but you know... 1500 bucks and I already have the Panasonic 100-300mm that I actually quite like. Great thing though is now we have a bit more freedom with the built-in stabilization. We can pick glass as we please.2 points

I've been experimenting with some borrowed Voigtlander 17.5 and 42.5 lenses, but due to the small grip on the GX80 I find that my wrists tire quickly. Maybe I'm just weak, but those lenses are pushing the balance/weight/comfort level for me. As much as I like their look, I'm thinking of switching to just using my P15/1.7 and getting the P42.5/1.7 for indoor use. Or maybe getting the PL12/1.4 or PL42.5/1.2 if I can get more paid work someday. I think it was @fuzzynormal who mentioned that he might just use the Olympus 25/1.2, the PL42.5/1.2 and O12-40/2.8 zoom for most of his stuff going forward. As @jase noted in his lessons learned, that hitting focus by "cheating" with the AF button is preferable to blurry unusable shots. I find that I can edit around the AF seeking. I have also found it particularly difficult to ensure focus with the GX80 during recording due to the limited resolution of the EVF and the inability to Punch-In Zoom while recording. Also, even though I mostly shoot with the EVF/LCD in monochrome to better see the yellow peaking, it still is hard to see during shooting especially with fast-moving event-type stuff. When using lenses in manual mode, I do like how you can push-in the rear dial and it does Punch-In Zoom to help with focus, I just wish you could do the same while recording.2 points

Warning about Panasonic g85/80 & lens
Fredrik Lyhne and one other reacted to Cinegain for a topic
True, but cars don't magically slow down either. @Grimor, great news! Matt Frazer and the Panasonic US team always show they listen and care. Then they'll have to pull some strings to actually get something going overseas, but they really come through for us! I think they're the main reason we've seen features added on the GH4.2 points -
First footage with Aivascope 1.75x Anamorphic - New Baby Hypergonar like lens
Flynn reacted to Ian Edward Weir for a topic
Here is the first thing I shot with the Aivascope. Filmed on a GH4 in 4k 4:3 for 2.35:1 Lens used - Aivascope and Olympus Zuiko 38mm f1.8 as taking lens. +1 diopter for a few close up shots. I use a lens hood to minimize flares. I shot at f/5.6 Quick coloring in Film Convert. Super harsh lighting but quick real world look. Flares would also be totally horizontal if I were on a tripod but it's mostly handheld.1 point -

Hmm it's sharper than I thought. But there is a huge amount of moire and aliasing. https://***URL removed***/reviews/image-comparison/fullscreen?attr29_0=fujifilm_xt1&attr29_1=nikon_d5500&attr72_0=1080&attr72_1=1080&normalization=full&widget=427&x=-0.5600991297665953&y=0.142551466145631 Also I'm not sure exactly but I don't think there are any manual controls of exposure. BTW the XA2 doesn't use the X-trans sensor, so the video may be better on it.1 point

Canon XC10 4K camcorder
Shield3 reacted to hyalinejim for a topic
Yes, the Sony looks a lot better in that vid. But, something fishy is going on here or the user hasn't a clue what they're doing. I don't think the XC10 was set to its best picture style for that test. It looks like it could be the most contrasty one, which has much less DR than C-Log or WideDR. Also, there's something weird happening with compression that is destroying detail in the Canon but leaving the Sony untouched! There's an A/B comparison at about 53 seconds in. At 54 seconds the XC10 turns to total mush, but the Sony is fine. Don't trust this comparison. Was this ISO500? Looks good! Implying a firmware fix might be possible1 point -
What kind of people buy a camera with dials for ISO, shutter speed and exposure compensation? I think, these are people who think that they get better results when taking full control. It would be mind blowing, but also the end of Fujifilm MILCs, because they would give away their advantage over the competition. Also, there are camera profiles in Lightroom, it still doesn't match the camera's internal raw converter.1 point

Is the 38mm the widest you can go with the GH4 in 4:3 mode? So far, how do you like it in terms of size, weight, mounting, and IQ?1 point -
I agree with @dahlfors. The d750 was my first Nikon and I do have Issues with the usability still after 6 Month that upset my workflow pretty much every time. Also I find it rather clanky... flip out flash and mode dial are looking/feeling quite fragile to me. Been on crop before, I would/should have waited for the d500 as it is a different league quality wise. Saying that, now that I have tasted the full frame, it feels quite nice to have a bigger sensor/lenses going with it, and I would probably not go back to a crop... ...unless it is stuffed with "proper" video features...120fps, peaking, some kind of AF support etc....don't care for 4k atm, my phone has got more processing power than my computer.1 point

Video on the X-T10? Really not worth even thinking about. The footage and controls are awful. I don't really upload my photos as much as I used to but here are a few from the X-T10 as well as the X-T1 and X100s which I had for very briefly https://www.flickr.com/photos/scastilho/sets/721576762293451061 point

The 4K Fuji X-T2 is here
jonpais reacted to Trek of Joy for a topic
Fuji certainly isn't cheap, but Sony's F1.4 primes and F2.8 zooms are considerably more expensive than Fuji's, and none of their APS-c only lenses are faster than f/1.8. When you start looking at the system as a whole, costs are not very different and can easily fall in favor of Fuji when you start comparing all of the lenses. The Em1.2 is $400 more than the XT2, and I'm betting the GH5 will be priced even higher. NX doesn't have anything close to Fuji's lens selection, outside of the two S zooms, everything is slower and doesn't cover nearly as many FL's as Fuji. And there won't be any new NX lenses. Or bodies. Ever. Fuji has a new lens every few months and all of the traditional focal lengths covered. They have zooms from 10-400mm, along with fast native primes in 14, 16, 18, 23, 27, 35, 50, 56, 60 and 90mm with more coming. There's also 3rd party Touits and Sigmas that are mirrored on Sony. I've been a die hard Sony shooter for years, but I'm seriously looking at Fuji with the XT2 and dumping my a7rII and a6300. The controls, dual cards, the joystick, the speed (its so much faster than the a6300 and a7rII in operation), the SOOC colors, the lack of Sony's ugly magenta tinted skin tones and so on make it a pretty compelling option. I rented one for a few days and absolutely love shooting with it more than any Sony body I've ever used. These are great times, we have so many compelling options that are capable of producing some incredible images. Happy shooting.1 point -
Quite a bit of difference in focal length. The 42.5mm is much more restrictive I'd say, but is great as a portrait lens for example. With 30mm you're in more of a general purpose area doing a bit of everything rather well. Both have a great look to 'em though, so I'd say mainly it's focal length you've got to think about. Don't actually know about the Sigma, but the Panasonic 42.5mm isn't too terrible to use for close up shots (macro) either. Plus, before we had OIS primes restricted to Leica, now there's Lumix ones, with OIS, including the 42.5mm, so that's a real blessing. If you have a 25mm already, maybe you can skip the 30mm for now and go for the 42.5mm. If you already have a 50mm, then maybe get the 30mm. All depends what you can use the most and lends itself for your kind of shooting.1 point

A successor to D750 will most certainly have 4k, since D750 has been positioned to be a good allrounder for photos & videos. Sooner or later they will add 4k to the APS-C models below D500, but according to Nikonrumors.com it doesn't seem like there's any 4k in D5600 (and his sources are usually correct). I wouldn't expect 4k in Nikon's APS-C cameras until early spring 2017 at least. I'd expect the next Nikon camera to be released with 4k would be a D750 successor.1 point

Yeah, looking at the footage shot, it doesn't look like the gear is holding you back from the actual experience. The camera is just casually there, sorta speak. But the Sigma is a beast, true in performance as well, but the size and weight is not to be underestimated. I'd only really use it in combination with a cage/rig/tripod (and indeed boosted). But if you think it's manageable for you, then by all means! But maybe see if you can borrow one from someone for a day... might change your mind for using it on hikes 'n trips like that. Think the Panasonic might be a good bet, especially because of the OIS. If focusing with the 20mm works for you, this should too? I personally opted for the Olympus one, because it also matches up really well with the E-M1 and I indeed like that MF-declutch with hard stops, the built quality and the optical performance/look; trade-off was: no OIS and it's a heftier piece of equipment as well. 7-14mm is brilliant too with its rectilinear design, great for landscapes and has come down in price quite a bit since I got it at launch. But on a Panasonic body, that smaller lens, correction and OIS could mean the Panasonic 12-35mm would be well suited. Though I'm not sure if that micro jitter issue is still there?1 point

@kidzrevil you needed a C100markII from the beginning! A few months ago I did a documentary series for a small TV station, in the northern part of Greece (Macedonia and Thrace territories, I am not even sure if you know where Greece is!) , 12-14 hours of work per day/ a lot of miles/6 days a week for a full month (and a bit). I could choose between a dozen of cameras (GH4/5D markII and III/Canon 70D/a couple of Sony 1/3inch video cameras/C300/my NX kit/ e.t.c) I didn't even think about it, I grabbed a C100markII, an 18-135 STM, and a couple of primes (I never used one, never, we had 4-7 locations every day, and it was me and a producer/driver type of guy). I was sending the footage every week, and the people in our base had to edit a whole episode in a few days, so, no really time for post. I believe this project was only possible because of the C100.1 point
