  1. This thread was created so we can all share our opinions on the lut pack, as some of you may know, these were created specifically to the NX1, however, I've made some tests on Sony Cine4, Nikon D800 and Canon 5D Mark 3 with very pleasant results. The lut pack contains 9 different luts, ranging from color to black & white, stylized looks to achieve a filmic effect on the nx1 footage. Heres a sample of what to expect from the looks : Fully Graded with Greenleaf Later today I will add new screengrabs of all the different looks, and what its best used on. Feedback is very very important, this was created for the community, and I will follow all of your opinions in order to update the pack and deliver the best possible results! I hope you all have fun and like using them as much as I've had created them! Happy gradings!! Buyhere : https://sellfy.com/p/HNAk/#

  2. The Samsung NX1 and Sony A6300 have been warned. Fujifilm has arrived! No really. This time they mean it. The X-T2 shoots the best 4K I have yet seen for $1500, with a great lens range, pleasing colour science, less rolling shutter and a different approach to ergonomics to Sony. Read the full article

  3. Is it better the A7SII or the 1Dx II? It depends and some will find one better than the other but commenting on something that you don’t know and never used is not a good idea. Andrew was very against the 1DxII and now has one and he likes it, Philip Bloom was also skeptic and now has one and he really like it and so on… Currently the 1dx II is the only DSLR/Mirrorless class camera to do 4k 60p 4:2:2 and with an extremely good video AF. It may or may not matter for you but for someone like me it is a life saver. Will the next Sony have the same or better spec probably yes but is not there yet. Now to some nonsense that you have written: Like the needs of a 5000 usd PC to edit 4k MJPEG files or “shit” as you call it.... does it comes from your experience of every day working with this files right? Because I do it almost every day and I can tell you that 4k 30p is doable in realtime in Resolve with a 1500 usd notebook and a 2000 usd PC can do real-time 4k 60p editing and grading with no transcoding or proxy. I have already posted here the discussion around formats: Anyway if you want high quality files be ready to have high bitrates… DJI new 4/3 camera has the minimum bitrate at 4k 30p in prores at 900 Mbits per seconds! Blackmagic at 492 Mbits 4k 25p in prores, C700 XF AVC is 440 Mbits at 4k 30p. Pro people are used to these size and RAW is even on another leauge. Stabilizing what you call dinosaurs is super easy, just use one of the most popular gimbals from a Ronin M/MX, Letus Helix Jr or any Movi. I use every week the 1DX II on a Ronin M and I can shoot while moving even on rollerblades with a 50mm at F1.2 without a focus puller as one man band, do it with your super light Sony if you can. Is it worth the 3000 usd more than the Sony? For some people yes for some no. For some it will generate more money so they can buy a better car from some other is too much and they will buy a crappy car with the 3000 saved. The latest scoop is that Canon will drop the EF mount from their camera because the lens selection is too week and nobody in the industry is adopting the EF mount. In fact Red, Canon C series, Panasonic and Balackmagic have all agreed to not offer the EF mount on their top of the line cinema cameras anymore and to offer the Sony one instead:-) Canon and Sony move at different pace and both innovate and stagnate. Canon was the first to introduce a good HD video with the 5DII, the first to do 4k in a DSLR the first to do 4k 60p 4:2:2 in a DSLR and the first to make autofocus really work for video. So yes is a dinosaur but it moves well just not at your wished price. At the end I wonder why people criticize so much cameras that they never have used? Again is the 1dx II better than the A7SII? In some area yes and some not and for some people some aspects are more important than others. Even a Gopro can be better than an Alexa in some aspects. But please do not misinform people about something that you don’t use regularly or even worst not even have touch in your life.

  4. I'm not sure that wether or not someone commercialises their work is particularly relevant, if that's what you meant. I have seen low quality output from people who charge for what they do, high quality output from people who do not, and a lot of stuff in between. So I'm not sure that commercialising your work is a necessary pre-condition for being able to express an opinion. Nor is it necessarily a good indicator of quality. Hence, not particularly relevant.

  5. While I feel the article is not on form (we're all human, I think), those that question Andrew's filmmaking ability seem to forget that whatever he is doing, it's obviously working as he's able to make a living off EOSHD. That to me is a very good business man. I think this camera race is something to brush aside at the moment. The options we have now are ridiculous - I think most would benefit from sticking to their current cameras, ignoring the next batch of camera releases and invest money into lighting, camera movement, lenses and essential video education (loads of stuff out there like Shane Hurlbut). I hope Andrew sticks to the 1DX II, reviews cameras here and there and we see more of an emphasis on other areas. Although that might not be a good business decision, as loads of people go nuts over cameras. The Panasonic GH7 will be announced with an auto Hollywood mode so we don't have to make effort anymore, and the internet will literally set on fire (when they find out the auto Hollywood mode is on a 2 second buffer and fills a 1TB SD card instantly).

  6. I did get an invite to the FS7 II event but couldn't go to Barcelona in the end due to getting ill. This is not about disliking one company or liking another. It is about liking one camera over another. You are free to have a different opinion about your cameras but it's a bit questionable attacking someone for being against your favourite brand. Is this the kind of hyper consumerist world we're living in now? Post-fact?

  7. Andrew, do you film professionally? It's just that you speak authoritatively but I don't think I've seen anything other than what you post here. To me the skin tones (especially on the train trip) look pretty awful. No client I have would ever approve that. The blacks are crushed to death and faces are red and over-saturated.

  8. Clearly there are huge imbalances and injustices through out the world. In the so called developed world many of the voters have simply switched off as far as politics is concerned. This is a huge problem as it leaves the door open for organised or even semi-organised extremists with narrow agendas (racism, fascism, religious groups, etc). This has been seen in recent votes in the UK, Colombia and the USA among others. Other democracies have been manipulated and attacked like in Turkey, Hungary and Poland. Media has played a huge part in twisting the truth and feeding people's worst impulses. How we deal with this is one of the great questions of our times. We are at the end of an era, a system (neoliberalism) is in it's death throes. It has torn up and shat out the social order in place since the second world war as well as truly trashing the planet, all for some stupid tokens that we call money. Our problem is what comes next. The losers are fed up and angry, lashing out at anything or anyone that might be to blame. Whilst we have so many scientific means to understand the world, more and more people seem to be turning to the ignorance of extreme religious beliefs. Witness the power of the evangelicals in places like the USA and Colombia and Hindu and Islamic groups in Asia. Dangerous groups who have been thoroughly manipulated to believe absolute nonsense and who try to enforce those beliefs on others. We can choose those that offer a change but a change for the worse like Trump, Farage, Le Pen or those who live in a world of anger like Uribe, Erdogan and Orbán, or we can take a step back and realise we have to change many things in our lives, the way we run our planet, how we treat each other, how we share what's left...What we really need is a positive movement that people can rally around because if not we are going to tear ourselves apart again.

  9. Nice video. I noted 2 things though: 1. Crazy amounts of purple and green chromatic aberrations. 2. Strange motion cadence... I could see the frames. Possibly due to shutter speed choice? Most notably seen on the first shot of the gondola coming our from a bridge.

  10. Hi Andrew. I totally understand your point of view and I find this website very interesting. Even though I'm still "eating" to regular tables such as DPReview and other mainstream websites, picking the dish I like and ignoring the rest, I'm always curious to check your food. I know that your house will be different, a bit "bi-polar" sometime but always refreshing, free of any marketing interest and willing to be commercially incorrect in this huge ocean of product placement and influencers that internet has become. For me Canon got a few interesting features (colors, DPAF) but the Cons are just too much for the price. However I have no religion in terms of gears. As long as you are comfortable with your Canon and others are satisfied with Sony or Pana, I totally respect that and will not do any proselytism. That being said, I'm kind of confused by your Spanish video here. Looks like a video I could have made in 2 days back in the days when I started with my T3i. I mean the contrast, expo, colors, cuts and all that. I'm not attacking your skills, I'm assuming you make a living out of it and you surely have way more experience and knowledge than me but showing this type of video to illustrate a high end DSLR review is surprising. Perhaps this is what people are trying to say here.

  11. Just dropping some more insight after doing more tests.. Don't use the Highlights/Shadows adjustments when shooting faces. It evens out the skin, giving that "waxy" effect. Classic Chrome with +4 color is my favourite profile. Provia can be a bit too orange on skin. ProNeg Standard is good too if you want something slightly flatter. 4k jello is real. Close to the Samsung NX1 and Sony A7S. Use with caution. Thankfully the 1080p is sharp; much sharper than my D5500. AF-C is very usable if you get to know it. In JPEG stills, the Grain option on Strong actually lifts up the blacks a little bit, giving that VSCO effect, which I quite like. The 23mm f2 WR is a weird lens. Out of focus areas have a rendering like some vintage lenses I have used. It's nice but not what I expected from a somewhat expensive modern lens. The f1.4 has a more modern rendering but the mechanics act more like an old lens. The below were taken with the f2 WR. Really want to go out and shoot properly but just don't have the time at the moment.

  12. I cant believe 43rumors used the headline "The new G80 firmware doesn’t seem to fix the IS issue on all lenses" for that video. Anyone who's used a telephoto zoom with optical stabilisation has seen that "recoil" effect. You can't expect a zoom of that range to be totally stable handheld. Ridiculous. I don't even have/intend to get the camera and I feel annoyed. Poor journalism and all that..

  13. In all due respect, I think this is one of your weaker articles. The comparison is weird (as the A7SII does look better) and this newish stance regarding Canon contradicts many other previous articles written on the site. I looked into the Canon 1DX II - although the entire package is nice, the file sizes are very large, you need a hotshoe monitor for serious work (exposure tools, tilt viewing angles etc), the highlight roll-off is steep, and finally we are back to the Franken-rig for steady hand held... so having a more video focused hybrid or a dedicated video camera will be a better option in a lot of cases. Plus, while Sony images are much harder to get a pleasing look - with skill, you can get some magnificent results. Many users are uploading very poorly graded S-log videos with horrendous white balance, exposure and lighting. Get it right, and you have lovely dynamic range, lovely colour and detailed image. No auto modes required! I can see the DPAF having huge value in many situations. I'm glad you are enjoying the benefits. However, I wouldn't throw out theta A7S II just yet, it serves a very different purpose and will be very useful.

  14. "Likewise when I invested – key word invested – in the A6300, had I known Sony would roll out the A6500 a few months later I would never have spent money on it. One should rarely wait to buy the tool you need, because there’s forever something newer round the corner, but it seems like every 6 months Sony make your last purchase a complete waste of money." 1) Oh COME ON. For two years you were yelling at Canon for not innovating. Now that they finally update your yelling at Sony for innovating to much with fast refresh cycles? 2) Cameras are not an investment in terms of resale value, camera's are in an investment into your art/business. I've grown very tired of base Canon profiles ( C-log is excellent however). They are excessively warm, not true to life at all. Which is great if your shooting weddings all the time, but not all subjects are served with that type of color. I find your comparison completely false. The Canon is using your custom profile GRADED and the Sony is using Standard, ungraded, and obviously underexposed! But most of all, no mention of the IBIS and excellent viewfinders on the High-end Sony camera's?? I could never go back to only using the rear LCD, a non-tilting one at that!

  16. Canon have made the biggest step forwards with their DSLR technology this year that we've seen since 2008 and the 5D Mark II. However it isn't the 5D Mark IV that has me excited so much the 1D X Mark II. This is a camera that will see out the next 6 years as the benchmark for others to follow. Read the full article

  18. Gorgeous color, but I think I prefer the 1DXII footage ever so slightly. Pound for pound though the X-T2 is unparalleled for the price.

  19. Indeed. There's already tons of manual adapters, and the video market should drive demand for powered adapters soon enough. My main question is if the same excellent video quality will trickle down to the new X-T20/X-E3 models.

  20. I dont know if I would have dared to use that! Haha, so so cool. Asked the seller some questions and he got back to me right away: - minimum focus without diopters is 1m, - it is dual-focus, that's why I mention a Rectilux-CoreDNA (or even an SLR Magic rangefinder), - I'm not in office now to tell you exact size of rear element but as I remember is something like 40mm more or less

  21. i dont understand why you used the word disingenuous when what you go on to say just repeats what i said - cameras that are labeled 4K dont achieve 4K resolution just like tv's labeled HDR do not meet all the specs of HDR. I did not say all cameras or all tvs. You did add a lot of irrelevant info, which could be useful. Thanks for the praise.

  24. Indeed, that's why politicians campaign in poetry and rule in prose. The reality of a Trump establishment will be very different to what his supporters voted for and he will have difficult decisions to make that will be unpopular no matter what choice he makes. There are good ideas on both sides of the political left and right, I just wish people would vote for good PRACTICAL ideas and not hyperbole. And no matter whether you are a conservative or liberal, good economic policy is good economic policy. Trump is an economic novice and his businesses have underperformed the market. True. But clearly a poverty of the mind is developing in the US and UK. Artist David Hockney - "One time, I was walking in Holland Park (I was sitting for Lucian Freud), and I stopped to watch some black rabbits playing. So I sat on a seat watching and then some magpies came down, black and white birds, and they looked rather good. I was sitting there having a cigarette and three girls come running by, jogging and see me and come: “Ow, ow… ” [wags finger]. And I sat there and thought: “They think they are very healthy, but they haven’t seen the rabbits.” And I thought: “Well, I’m healthier than they are." I think largely the Trump thing is a reaction to the sanctimonious liberalism and political correctness that I hate about Clinton and the left, even though I myself am centre-left in many of my political views. Trump is a big fat steak as opposed to a wet vegan salad. Exactly why it was important to have a decent voter turnout, there just wasn't enough passion for the wet vegan salad.

  25. OK, people voted for him because they just LOVE racism. Joking aside, I think our western society is verging on having a dangerous love affair with celebrity and consumerism. That's why, when a well known blogger insults your favourite camera brand, people flip out. People need to realise that it's ok to disagree. I was watching the US election closely and know exactly what happened. Trump won due to a depressed voter turn out for Clinton and a wave of popular support in the rust belt states from mainly working class white voters who felt left behind and distrustful of the mainstream media to give them objective information. So they sourced their information from a Facebook echo chamber instead and from fake news articles, all the while believing Clinton was corrupt and Trump as a 'successful' businessman = the answer to the US's economic problems. If anything it is they who are painfully oversimplifying the world and politics, not me. And it is the same with cameras. I can give you my opinions, and the facts, but people already have their own conspiracies of information from the pro-Sony or pro-Canon echo-chambers online, and it is becoming increasingly hard to put good information out there in the face of such indifference. Click-bate and heavily biased camera review sites would not exist if the audience wanted for better, or knew any differently, and it is the same with Trump.

  26. Hey Andrew, I agree with almost everything written in this article, however the examples I find a little strange. I believe this is a custom profile that you created for that canon but its so hard to compare when the black levels are sitting so high and the skin seems blown out (at least the red channel is incredibly close) I understand what you mean though that she was in the light of the setting sun so it should have that warmth, but I would guess 9/10 people would choose that sony image as the Canon looks a little early days instagram filter like. Also quick note, I don't think it's fair to say the majority of American's voted for trump because of how rich he was. I'm sure he got some votes that way but that is a painful oversimplification of what happened.
    1 point
  27. To those critics in this thread - that you see my opinions as unworthy because I'm not inside the film industry doesn't surprise me, because most of the same people just voted for a US president based on how rich he was. It's a bit of a sad situation in 2016 where such a consumerist mindset exists that only pros shooting paid gigs are considered experts. Time and time again in Berlin I have turned down paid work to focus on my own creative projects and self-employment. It's my choice. EOSHD has been a success. I could have been slaving away, climbing the ladder professionally shooting one advert after another and being bossed around by clueless clients. Again, I have chosen a different path. I'd much rather be doing my own thing day in day out. It doesn't take much to click through to Vimeo and see my last 5 years of cinematography and personal work. And even if that isn't to your taste, your taste is not the universal blueprint by which everything film-related is judged. This article comes from the heart. Maybe I didn't get across the capabilities of the 1D X Mark II in one go, maybe I'm rusty. The footage isn't my best. It is 120fps with a heavily stylised grade shot handheld on holiday. It isn't meant to be Citizen Kane. It was just to show the 120fps. The way some people are going on about the image quality of that video as some way indicative of the overall quality from the 1D X Mark II is really stupid. The 4K looks very different. That is coming next in part 2. I also have shot with the X-T2 and G80. Great alternatives for less money. The 1D X Mark II was meant as a replacement for my 1D C and it succeeds in doing that. I paid £5k for the 1D C used back at the start of 2015 and even though it came out in 2012 the image is still better than the A7S II, Sony FS5, etc. No it is not a £500 camera. I never said it was good value for money in that respect. Pretty obvious really. The skintones - I think side by side with the Sony picture, the Canon one looks too extreme and you cannot really judge either image from the web or blog post page. In isolation at full 20MP resolution on a large print or a large 4K monitor, the Canon looks more natural and true to nature, whereas the Sony looks dead. Also the Canon flatters skin, whereas the Sony exaggerates any imperfections even on a very good looking subject. See the following 2.8K JPEGs instead, full screen -

  28. Exactly this & only this. Doesn't matter if you're a professional or an amateur, buy a Canon or a Sony, want a hybid or a dedicated camera. The reason you're interested in all this lovely, and sometimes not so lovely, tech is that you want to create/produce something - regardless of whether you make money out of it or not. However, there does seem to be a rise in people who don't want to sit down for 5mins and learn how to use what they've bought. Yes, you're not going to be an amazing photographer/filmmaker over night, it takes time & a lot of practice. So, don't ever blame the tools, because that isn't the problem. If you've used enough cameras, you can spend a few days with something new, do your tests (these are YOUR tests, not someone elses & should fit YOUR chosen style), then know where you stand (limitations etc.) & away you go. So, now I've re-thought Andrew's post & examples: firstly, he has the guts to put stuff on line for the whole world to see, and that takes courage; secondly, the Canon vs. Sony picture comparison might need re-thinking or re-interpreting. Now i'm not defending anyone, but having thought about it for a while, this is the conclusion I've come to. The Sony pic is just an average sterile thing, no complaints, looks fine, but is boring as hell - it has ZERO character! The Canon pic made me laugh at first and then the more I looked at it the more I realised that it wasn't this bland sterile, boring thing - it has character, it isn't perfect & that's why it stands out compared to the Sony pic. We all looked at the Sony pic & thought perfect, but who really wants to sit there and produce the same thing that everyone else is producing? How are you ever going to be your own person, with your own tastes and vision if you just tag along with the rest of the sheep?

    Super anamorphic project

Basically, I have figured out some rules. Longer lens has less dioptre than shorter lens. I got help from a friend in optical shop, where has instrument can check the lens. These are rear lenses of different 2x anamorphic lenses: Sphere/Cyliner A. +6.00/-6.00 B. +5.00/-5.00 C. +4.75/-4.75 D. +3.50/-3.50 Front lens should be like this: E. 0/-13.75 F. 0/-10.50 Many front lens are too thick, the instrument was unable to check. Also some front lenses I did not take apart. For example, if B+F is original 2x lens, then A+F would get about 1.7X, C+F would get 2.2X, and D+F would get 2.7x.

  37. i registered just to like your comment. my thoughts exactly. i own the 1dx mark II as well (like many, i normally shoot on sony a7s, a7s2, fs700 etc). a couple of Andrew's pros made me giggle a bit. color flatter talent? you mean to say that a colder grade would be unflattering? lighting, make-up and distortion free focal lenght flatter talent. p.s. i even think the sony looks better in the first example for instance. next, it's 1,38x crop, which is closer to 1,4x than 1,3x, making it more similar to super 35 than full frame. also, it's far from having good dynamic range, it's decent at best, and there is no way any third party "log" profile made in canon's picture profile editor could come close to genuine canon's c-log. flattened neutral profile isn't log, it just lifts shadows, you cant make log with a curve in a rudimentary pp editor, it offers zero highlight gain. the a7s is the one with impressive dynamic range, AND it has proper log. you can overexpose it 4 (!!!!) stops before it falls apart. canon is a goner at 2 stops over. it's a great camera with great straight out color, just like sony is way better at other things. but the fanboyism is strong here. especially seeing how you initially bashed the camera without even having had tried it. nobody forces you to update your sony gear, it's an investment in your creative nature, not in your resale value. just because there is something newer, doesnt mean you gonna get shot if you dont get it. i still use the original a7s and it's more than enough if you dont shoot high end commercial stuff + (and even then you could manage with an external recorder).

  38. Interesting addition, a cable that goes into the remote port of GH4 and allows to adjust focus and shutter (why not aperture?) from your phone via bluetooth connection. There is a version for some smaller Sony cameras too. I wonder if the joystick and/or the bluetooth remote could be used for control as well..

  40. The good things first : 1.finally an article about a camera comparison with a video, haven't seen that in a while here. 2. Seems like a good combo (good stills camera with decent video, however lacking resolution.) thought for the price it should be, and that's about it with good points. the bad : 1. PRICE, for real ? are we seriously even considering to compare a 6000+ camera to a 2400 one ? the price is just astronomical (people buy cars for their families for this price) 2. easy pleasant COLOR - :D this made me laugh. So you are saying that this camera gives you awesome color straight out of the box, no need to edit, yeah perfect, the thing is I dont know any pc (under another 5000) that would even be able to edit that mjpeg 500mbps shit. AND this is a subjective matter. Andrew you forgot to mention that Chris and Jordan specifically said that many many times over in the view that this is purely subjective. Moreover they are testing sub 2000 cameras with some being much less. Honestly i disliked the color in that video, oversaturated, punchy, crushed blacks, frankly this video is far from pleasing on account of colors and DR. bleh but that is just me. some may love unnatural red over saturated punchy color. 3. DR - do you honestly think that this footage with the edit you did has better DR than a7s ... suddenly it's no issue ? the footage looks like it's from a 7d. 4. Crop factor 1.3 IS NOT full frame. Everyone being disappointed by 1.6-1.7 on 5d IV and 1.3 on a 6000 body is okay ? please. The awful: 5. That thing is enormous. good luck stabilizing that. (another rise in costs) 6. No articulating screen 7. No focus peaking on a body for 6000 ? lol 8. 8bit for 6000 ? lol 9. Codec I mean, if anyone is doing sports photography and can justify the price, go for it sure, for video ? you'll be back to ILCS or real 10bit cameras in few weeks after using this dinosaur oh and i forgot , the ugly : 10. EF mount Cheers, meant no offense thanks for taking time to review, keep them coming !!! mickey

  41. I agree with DPC and Gerbert Floor. There is no commercial potential in this footage, as it is.
    1 point
  42. I kinda agree with DPC, that comparison is really weird. I agree that canon has great colors, but that profile with crushed blacks is pretty extreme. I mean, it's ok as a 'look' I guess, but not really something you can deliver to every client. I'm also pretty curious about work or a reel, this site (especially the forum) is a great resource, but your opinions can be quite harsh and I don't see the actual knowledge and creative skills to back it up, except for a few music vids from a long time ago. This is not meant as a bash or to bully you, but I think it's too much spec talk and not enough filming.

  43. Hey guys, here is a new music video I directed/shot/edited. I used a sun anamorphic with a Helios 58 and rectilux core DNA. Let me know your thoughts!

  44. There is a problem with this statement, as Nikon that won number 1 in the "JPEG shootout" also use Sony sensor...

  45. While it's true the 1D X II is ahead in several areas, such as PDAF. By the time its successor comes out, which will be a few years, I have no doubt Sony and Panasonic would have matched or surpassed in these areas. Canon still has its Canon colors, but I have grown to like the colors in other brands. I definitely prefer the GH4 and A7S II colors, both with custom profiles, in good natural light. Canon is more pleasant in dim artificial light, but I can tweak the other two to be pretty close. So I won't be going back to Canon just yet, but it's good to see they still have some strong points.

  46. +1 Andrew on the entire article. I am off the Sony coaster. After purchasing my 1dx mark Ii, I sold my a6300, a5100,a6000, 80D and C100 Mark ii.

  47. Too expensive for me. The GX85 image you put is amazing. Way better than the Sony. Good enough color wise. So the GH5 would do it for me if only it had DPAF like the canon....... it would be a way better tool than the canon actually. 3 times cheaper, articulated screen, 3 times smaller, better spec and 10bit with better codec. Just that AF which is crucial and which is going to be DPAF decent at best, and not DPAF at worst

Just bought a 2nd hand EOS-M + EF adapter recently for $AUD120 to practice my video. Installed Magic Lantern to assist with with the AF.
