  2. 120-140-160 I believe is best for hard disk drive space/camera heating (mine gets really warm)-sensor annihilation/file problems created. For casual use and time long projects I do not even bother. Otto is Gandalf the Grey, Kino Seed is Frodo Baggins, and Vasile was that human Boromir(?) that his pride and recklessness made him vurnable to the Ring's power. He also dies at the end of the first movie! The pitty is, we need more allies from the elves and dwarfs, for Otto the White evolution, and the lonely Kino hobbit carry the ring further; so maybe there wont be 2 or 3.

So this WanderingDP - interview young up and coming DPs who share unique perspectives and ideas is incredibly valuable. I learned a ton from the interview with Chayse Irvin, super talented young dp who shot the Lemonade Beyonce film. http://wanderingdp.com/

  4. Camera shuts down when it gets too hot, I tested this by simply turning down the number for when it should shutdown in case of overheating with that Dev menu you can access with 1.40 and below. Yes a shame no one tries to unlock even more or hack it for real like magic lantern, but there a huge amount of great cameras coming in 2017 effectively making it pointless to hack the NX1 unless you really want to as a side project or something. Strange how no one from Samsung camera department has leaked any developers tool

  5. This was a specific clip to go for a moddy style, but you can go for a more vibrant style very easily and it still looks great. Most people who did get the NX1 arent good, they were consumers who wanted a camera, very few prosumers/professionals actually got the NX1, so i'd pick carefully what you're watching online, because most of it is going to look terrible.

Well, the LX100 doesn't have a constant aperture throughout either, I still find it a lovely camera. I don't do zoom-ins/-outs. I just treat it as multiple focal lenghts in one... so for convenience sake of not having to swap lenses. Want to change the framing/focal length? Do like on an interchangeable lens camera. Stop recording, get something that has the focal length/field of view you're after, adjust settings accordingly to get the proper exposure and hit record again. Might be a little slower than just zooming in and knowing you're good, but I'm a slow kinda guy. No rush, no stress. Admittedly not very run 'n gun, though. True story about the weight shift, you still have internal movement. Didn't understand why he would say that either to be honest. This camera might be great for some... I've heard some voices of people who want to use it as a 2nd camera to a Panasonic GH and in certain conditions it might be a great pair. Great as an all-in-one travel cam too. But for filmmaking, I think this doesn't really cut it. It's roughly the same price as the G80 w/ 14-140mm, which I think would make a nicer option.

  8. I just won one pretty cheap and was wondering the same thing. It should be here tomorrow, but I'm a little afraid to test it. I believe it worked with the GH4, but with the floating sensor, the entire sensor carriage may be pushed out a little further...

  9. I havent read all the comments, so what im gonna say might have been said already. I own an NX1 and a7sII right now, although I barely used the a7sII, because im waiting for some lenses to arrive, from what I've tested, I dont think ill like it as much as the NX1. I have seen people using and creating beautifull things with the Sony, so im sure you can eventually make stunning stuff, but off the bat, the footage isnt as impressive as the NX1. Also, after getting the 16-50s, I dont feel like I need anyother lenses at all, it hasnt left my camera in quite a while (I had Sigma art 35,50mm, sigma 18-35mm, samyangs, tamrons etc), so you kinda have a full package with around 2k€, which is stunning. With the a7sII, you will need a combination of cameras, and some time to learn how to grade (if you dont know already) and treat your image, but its still an amazing camera. NX1 footage :

  10. Are you sure it really is exposure shift not the lcd automatically adjusting it's brightness? Do you see the exposure changing also when viewing videos on a computer? I thought I had this issue, but it was just lcd set to auto. Have to use manual brightness.

To me, like Andrew said, this is just a mirrorless 80D. I don't really see the added benefit of it being mirrorless much, unless they would've given it all the mirrorless bells 'n whistles. There aren't many lenses and the ones that are there aren't all super compact or anything. So... people really start using it like an 80D with an adapter and EF lenses... ok, so maybe all the features? Well, no 4K, no slowmo, no nothing. 'But it has stabilization!' lol, yeah digital one. Such a joke. And have you seen prices? It's not exactly cheap either. And the tilty flippy screen folds downwards... who the hell came up with that. So... they borrowed the design from the G5 X, but failed to copy the vari-angle screen. I just don't get it. Might as well get the 80D already? Ha, or better yet, pick out something different entirely. It's a few generations away from being an actual viable concept. It's only straight out of camera colors and dualpixel AF keeping Canon alive at this point, folks get told at stores to buy one because they can mess up the least themselves. Other cameras might actually require a little knowledge and skills, but then get the far superior results. Panasonic, Sony, heck even Samsung innovated a great deal by going mirrorless. With Canon... it's just more of the same. I just don't really get it and therefor I won't get it.

  16. The filmic look comes from dynamic range, but unfortunately not all cameras have enough to have that filmic look, therefore we raise the black levels to mimic that style. Its a stylistic choice, I dont like vibrant looks, to me, thats as vibrant as I would go. But I dont think its the cameras fault, its as versatile as any other camera. This is a friends work, also with NX1 : I think the NX1 has a much more pleasing look than any of the sonys for example, specially after trying my new a7sII, its very easy to have terrible skin tones.

  19. Take the time and be patient. But look daily or more often at Ebay. Check with Google if there are any new Elmoscopes or Kowa 16H/8Z lenses. Look at Japanese auctions for example. I did the same and bought recently (at Ebay) a Bolex 16/32 for half of the price you often see at Ebay. The time I spend looking was 2-3 months. Good luck!

  20. To me that clearly seems a stylistic choice. I'm more drawn to wedding videos that are a little more cheerful, upbeat, happy, bubbly, but that does tend to get a little cliché. So, I admire the spin on it, to make it a little more dramatic yet mellow. There's a calmness, it's peaceful/serene. The grade reflects that. It's not another overly energetic video, it's not poppy. Certainly that's something that some couples can appreciate, also pretty sure that's something that wouldn't fit the personalities of other couples. But when you're talking about taste and creative choice, anything is subjective. So I wouldn't go and say that's wrong.

  21. Ah, that gizmo. Thanks for the tip! I've never tried it but with some tweaking, I think it has some potential of pushing the weight back on a front heavy camera. I'll try it when I need to mount the Nocticron + GX85 on the Crane.

    GH5 Prototype

I've seen it at an event two weeks or so ago. It seemed a whole lot bigger than the FZ1000. Then again, they needed to house the filters, the barrel extends just once and then changes in zoom and/or focus allows for internal movement only. This seems more of a camcorder, maybe a 2nd shooter or for documentary kind of stuff. Still, it looks very videoey. The sensor size is kept in check in order to provide a zoomrange like that. Too bad they went from the FZ200 with f/2.8 throughout (yeah, I know it has a smaller sensor, but the RX10 (original) did f/2.8 with a 1" sensor too) to a 20x zoom that goes from f/2.8 to f/4.5. So... it's all about having sufficient light. The dynamic range on the FZ1000 was nothing to write home about, that really killed it for me. Also, it made a lot of noise from stabilization and lens operation. Hope those things are a thing of the past now with the new FZ2500, unfortunately my attention went to the E-M1 Mark II hands-on, so I didn't really check into it that much. I think its application is vastly different from that of the GH5 and the 1" sensor is a bit of a struggle. I did find the FZ1000 to be a very good superzoom/bridgecamera for stills and the occasional video, but you'd only really want to use it in broad daylight or well lit locations. The dynamic range... the lens' sensitivity... it's just not as flexible as you'd want. And you've seen that V-LOG L footage, I thought it was pretty much awful there at ISO800, so you'd be limited to ISO400 with that f/2.8-4.5 lens. Dunno. I'm more excited for a LX200. 4/3" sensor. Sensitive glass (as a trade-off for zoom). I hope they'll also give it some treatment to make it more of a video shooter. Would pair up nicely with the GH5. Looking forward to the GH5 with latest and greatest hardware and better integration of the GH4 FW-added modes and improvements. I remember Aaron's topic/video when first using V-LOG L. Almost looked Blackmagic-like. With better sensor performance, readout, processing and internal 10-bit with the GH5, things are looking pretty promising. Fingers crossed.

You might just be able to get a FS700 + Odyssey 07Q at around £4k. That checks a hell of alot of boxes, and with raw or raw to prores, you can get past the sony colour issues pretty easily. 4K, 120fps, decent low light, raw, 12+ stops DR... much smaller than Red ONE.

  29. @ricardo_sousa11 Beautiful clip, exquisite style. But imo too flat, dark and desaturated to judge the camera's DR and colors. As I see it, you successfully managed to work around the NX1's prominent feature, overly sharp outlines in every detail, mistaken for superior resolution and not looking natural. Search on Youtube Samsung NX1 wedding, and you see what I mean in many instances. You tamed the beast, but your approach is not that of a normal highkey wedding with vivid colors. I even found the fir needles @1'30" a little too much.

  32. Hi MC, I actually just clicked the eyedropper over the whites of my eyes as well as the mannequin's. I know it's not the proper way to do it. I should have used a white balance card. But I'm stunned at how easy it was to get pleasing results with Reid's picture profile. The blueish color cast was literally removed in a single click. I'm sure I could tinker more with it in Premiere, but I already like it as it is.

  33. Confused on the update. The A6300 (and presumably the A6500) does allow color depth adjustments when using an S-Gamut Color Mode. That's what the original EOSHD ProColor profile was. Am I missing something?

The upside however is Nikon is the best and easiest mount to get lots and lots of native mount lenses for! And Nikon F mount is the easiest mount to adapt to other mounts. So makes a lot of sense to base the core of your lens collection around Nikon F mount Is what I've done myself. I guess CES is only next month after all. However at the crazy low prices of US$1.2K ish for a D750 then I kinda doubt it will fall much lower any time soon?!

You can judge by samples on the web but it depends on how they're shot, the lenses used and the variety of subjects. Again the last video is almost all close-ups, with a shallow DOF and quite a long lens. The grade is ok, light and colours decent. EOS M5's video quality like 80D is a real mixture of times when it looks like acceptable 1080p and times then it just looks terrible and digital. Again... depends on the subject. A mirrorless enthusiast camera costing over $1000 in 2016 should not still have moire & aliased 1080p, with no 4K option.

I actually liked that video. I like that soft Canon look. The problem, as of now, is there isn't enough samples and the ones that do exist are not that great... especially when you do a search of other cameras... I just found this video from the LX10 which I think looks great... and it's shot on a one inch sensor.

Good one andrew ! :P It might seems like that - I'm not saying the m5 is a great video camera either, have it use though (For me it's going to be an expensive gopro kinda camera and for youtube). I will pair it with the 28mm macro IS only to start with. Very light combo with a standard FOV. Much lighter than my a7s with a zeiss 25mm. When I shop around for camera and lenses - I shop mainly for a usable sensor and try to pair it with a useful or favorite lens and stick with it. Weird, but I like it. Each sensor deserve it's own prime in my kit. The zeiss haven't left my a7s for the last 6 month witch ultimately will end up in front of a used nikon d750. Then I'm waiting for the laowa 15mm f2 FE to glue it in front of the a7s. I had a 400mm L on my 7d for wildlife witch I'm gonna switch to a 100L macro i think (3x crop mode raw video) Each combo have a different usage in mind. Then I pick one or 2 combo depending of the shooting situation i'm planning. If I had 3200$ laying around - EM1 mk2 and the 12-100 would definitely be part of the kit

Are you pouring red wine on yours? Except 90% of the weight of the camera bag will be the EF lenses. Replacing 80D with a M5 body hardly makes any difference, especially as the 80D is not a particularly heavy camera to start with. It's not a 1D X! It's not so much the lack of 4K, it's the moire that's the problem and how electronic the image looks. Bang goes the renderless timeline and you have to re-render quite a bit when changing effects, trimming clip, re-timing, etc. Olympus E-M1 II performance 5 axis IBIS is where it's at for handheld stabilisation. That's true, good point. It is going in the right direction, I'll give you that. Now if they can move the memory card slot from the battery compartment to the side, that would be another good step towards a more serious mirrorless camera.

  44. I have been filming weddings for 10 years. Ask yourself: Am I beauty or am I documentary? If you are beauty then go with full frame (doesn't matter by whom, get shallow DOF). If you are doc, then get a c100. Develop an instinct for schedule changes. eg. When everyone is going to the next room, and when. Even if on paper,, it always changes. Ask people where they are going and why. Coordinate with the bride's best friend. Groom knows nothing and his friends are there to get wasted. Develop a signal so your. B cam can. Go wide when u go telephoto eg. Ring on finger Everything on slider, tripod or gimbal. Go hand held at your own peril. Seek perfection. Oh, and don't fuck up the dance by being embarrassed to light it.

VLog L converted with Cineon LOG to Linear LUT. A mixture of 4K 24p and HD 96fps. Things I'm loving about VLogL: Dynamic Range, and Color Things that aren't so great: Banding, and noise. I'm hoping that using an external recorder at 10 bit 4:2:2 will help with the latter.
