  1. Look, I'm all about M4/3, but to be honest, the actual sensor performance of just about any APS-C camera kicks M4/3 butt. Butt, I mean, but, it's more than sensor performance alone. Also, performance compared on sites like that are mostly important in terms of stills, perhaps not as much in terms of video, so, that's less of an advantage, but still a significant one. If you can make the rolling shutter work and never had issues with overheating, I'd even say: stick with it, good on you! You get a clear advantage in noise performance, detail and dynamic range (in some capacity) too. G80 wouldn't be a step up in quality. What you would get is a cheaper system. The possibility to mount much smaller lenses, to have better ergonomics (imho), front-facing w/ full touchscreen implementation et cetera. It's more about those things... the sensor is not on the same playing field though. But it's certainly managable going with M4/3, especially if you don't need the lowlight performance per se. I was looking forward so much to the A6300, but I'm glad I didn't get one. Because the rolling shutter and overheating (just knowing it could at any given time... I know it would probably work fine for months on end, but when push comes to shove would let me down at the most inconvenient time) would supersuck. I don't like the ergonomics and design of the camera. No front-facing touchscreen. Colors not that great off the bat. No real plans for the APS-C line-up lenses. Et cetera. Just my 2cts of course, but I choose not to deal with those things. But anyways... so you've had the GX85 right? Then you roughly know what the system is capable of. The G80/85 is a different league as a camera. In sensor performance, not so much. If you're happier with the A6300 than the GX85, I don't see why a G80 would suddenly triumph. On a unrelated note, *points towards the topic title*... anyone bought an E-M1 Mark II yet? Just curious. It's been out in countries like Germany and The Netherlands for a while now. Also started to see changes in the stock status of several local stores, yet for the time body only is tricky to get a hold of. I guess best would be to sell my E-M1 as kit with the 12-40mm and buy the E-M1 Mark II with all new 12-40mm in kit. Shouldn't make any difference below the line. Guess everyone is waiting for the GH5 announcement on the 4th (full specs + pricing + release date (spring/March/April))... but nobody was like: ooh, I have to get it anyways (not even you fuzzynormal)? I'm actually tempted to maybe pick one up on friday. I love the E-M1 for stills over any other camera. Doesn't mean I'm not interested to see what the GH5 is about... but it's not really the same thing, now, is it? Currently I have all kinds of cameras, so, I'd just be replacing models for their respective successors an keep using each for the areas they excell.

@Neumann Films Ideas for standalone tests: -ISO noise- same scene/shot, locked off on a tripod is fine, just roll through the ISOs and use shutter speed to keep exposure the same. -Rolling shutter- if you could use the methodology from this thread: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?303559-Measuring-rolling-shutter-put-a-number-on-this-issue! That would be great as then we would have a fairly standardized result that we can use to compare to other cameras ourselves. -Battery rundown test- Set the cam to its most power-hungry settings (IBIS on, deep DOF and highest bitrate, AF and AE on, LCD max brightness, Wifi on, etc), and see how long the battery lasts. Maybe point it at the TV or out the window at some trees or traffic, so that there's some motion for the codec to encode.

Could this be gh5 footage? Griffin Hammond is apparently working with panasonic on the gh5. YouTube says this vid is 4k60p.

  6. Would like to know what you think about our newest work. Shot with the infamous Panasonic GH4, internal V-LOG 8bit, -5/-5 NR and sharpness. Used Panasonic lenses: 12-35mm 2.8, 20mm 1.7 and 42.5mm 1.7. Used a Tiffen Black Satin Filter to get rid of the sharpning artifacts still left over at -5 and add some smoothness to highlights and shadows. Budget: about 0$.

  7. Fuji X-T2. The A6300/A6500 has so many compromises (RS, overheating, battery life) that the handling issues become distracting during shooting.

  8. Software optimization is a biggie. FCPX seems much faster than Adobe Premiere. If you are largely focused on complex special effects... That are beyond what can be achieved in Apple Motion, then the case for Windows may have some merit. Otherwise, not so much. People ramble on and on about specs... But what good are great specs if real world performance is worst. In the end all those great great specs will do is consume more power... Leading to reduced battery life.

  9. @John Matthews Hey John, I like the Procolor plus Filmconvert version the best. So did you shoot that in standard or natural? Here is an example filmed by deezid I had to post, regarding beautiful Panny skin tones and rich overall colors. 8bit Vlog, lookin great! It also has a 4K version on ytube for inspection. Really finding it to be one of the best Panny color examples.

  10. What's your budget like? That is always the problem I feel like technology is progressing so quickly there is no "safe bet" for run and gun stuff. So much new tech is coming out it's crazy! But if you are doing mostly narrative work and have time to control your shots, then Canon mount lenses are a no brainer since you can adapt a lot of lenses to that mount, and that mount is the very popular for adapting to mirrorless as well. The "problem" for you is that you will need new lenses no matter what camera you get if it's not mft - $$$. Lots of people like the A7s but sometimes struggle with the color. Also you need external rec for 4K. If you do a lot of close ups and shallow DOF then you can make 1080p work for you (remember those Kendy Ty threads...) but any wide shot and the lack of definition really shows. Just really depends on your style and what kind of look you are going for. Some people love the old film look, but that's really not my thing. Check out the sample vids of all the cameras mentioned... XT-2, G85, A6500, all in 4K downscaled. They're really impressive compared to just a few years ago. Next couple of years are sure to be even better! I'm trying the Sony A6500 route because I feel like eventually they're going to get their act together and solve the horribad RS and heat issues, improve the touchscreen and AF modes during video and then it'll be unstoppable (4K mode). It's like version 0.9 right now but can still deliver great images, just need to work around some issues. For narrative work, the AF stuff is less necessary if you are doing manual focus, but its so convenient. Plus, Sigma's MC-11 shows that eventually someone will get video AF to work with all lenses. Maybe I made the wrong choice, who knows... But, I'm just some rando on the internet who hasn't made much $$$ from video either and doesn't do narrative, haha. XT-2 is really good too, and next version will be even better, but you will have to wait for someone to make really good adapters for other mount lenses. Good luck! I'm sure you'll be able to make your next camera work for you whatever it is.

  11. I agree. I have owned a A7Sii ( my first camera with ibis), then later on, a GX85... I liked both cameras, but I probably enjoyed using my bmpcc more than the A7Sii. I dig ibis, and gimbals but it's not game over if your camera is without them.

Filmed using a Nocticron. Are there any 4/3rds cameras already shooting 4k 60p? That has to be the GH5 and it looks amazing on my 5k iMac. Looks like they have vastly improved skin tones and the shadows are as clean as can be.

Here are some results as to what it does to my daughter's skin color in front of window light: 1) The original: 2) EOSHD Procolor applied 3) Just for fun, EOSHD Procolor and FilmConvert FJ Velv 100 Let me know what you think. The 4K Fuji X-T2 is here

There are tripods, monopods, feet (that can walk the distance and use a wider lens!). I am surprised that suddenly IBIS and gimbals became a necessity. Like the a7sii, all of a sudden people prefer shooting in absolute darkness! I am not against IBIS/GIMBALS/HIGH ISO SENSORS, but there are ways working around limitations. After 18 years of pro work, this year was the first to use A7sII and Ronin, great, but only for 3 occasions (2 the A7sii and 1 the Ronin).

Around March I'll look closely at the Oly offering, but right now I'm not eager to pick anything up. I'm not really ever that eager to buy brand new cameras... (somehow I manage to do so though)

  16. A tip of the Hat to you Andrew! I am a professional video producer and have historically found my business benefits most from focus on story - grading / color has been down on my list of priorities in terms of what my clients notice and pay me for. I have seen a lot of my colleagues get bogged down in grading to the detriment of their delivery schedules. However This workflow is so easy and fast and the results so powerful that I simply cant ignore it. Indeed I am noticing dramatic results using the LUTS. Especially highlight roll off and color pop - I have always been a fan of those deluxe reds and blues from Canon and now I have them. Those popping colours are a matter of taste - i like candy colors so I am stoked. but one can always dial them down to taste. (Of course I am bracing for the usual online slamming about how my colours are all wrong...) I put together a quick and dirty before (in camera using recommended settings) / after (LUT applied) edit so you can intuitively feel the difference this LUT workflow makes - In my case on GH4 footage - with an Oly 7-14 at f7.1 - shutter speed way up as i don't have a vari ND set up for this lens yet. Dont discount setting idynamic range to high if you are in a challenging dynamic range situation - i put an example of this at the end of the video.

  17. Thank you for the confirmation. But in all my tests, it is sooo red it is unusable without another correction to bring down the reds. White should be white, not light pink. So adding this next correction is defeating the purpose, is it not as I am bringing down the overall reds rathe than the skin tones. To me this look totally unnatural. I have never used a Canon camera but have a shelf full of Panasonic cameras. I am thinking it is the Canon shooters should have a LUT to make it look more realistic, like a Panasonic. I have had conversations with both Curtis Judd and Caleb Pike, both huge GH4 users. Neither use any LUTs and their videos look beautiful. I guess there is a reason I never used Canon cameras. :-)

  18. Hey gang, over the last month I upgraded my camera gear to 4K with a used NX1 and NX500 (replacing my old trusty GH2 and a6000). Since I regularly make videos for the Carry Trainer YouTube channel, I thought I'd start a thread here to share my experiences with these two camera's. First, I tried both versions of the Samsung firmware. The Kino-Seed hack worked on my NX500, but not my NX1. Anyway, I settled on Vasile's nx-on-wake mod... it is worth the little extra work to install. For the picture profile settings, I am generally following the recommendations from Andrew Reid's guide. For the NX1: Gamma DR, .95 Green 0-255 Luminance Level. On the NX500 I don't see any video controls... the picture profile is set to standard. As Reid suggested, I set resolution to 3840x2160 with a 24p frame rate. Getting started testing my gear, I found my Fotodiox adapter wasn't triggering the sensor on the Samsung camera mount. Since I only use vintage manual lenses, I decided to just super glue the mount sensor down and avoid any future hassle (see attached photo). The glossy spot with the glue on the bottom of the mount is covered by the adapter, in case you were wondering about my sloppy work. I did my first shoot with these cameras last week, Dec. 19, 2016... filming a few new Carry Trainer episodes. I work as a one-man band on multi-camera shoots, usually running two or three cameras. The classic Blackmagic Cinema Camera 2.5K remains my A Camera. The NX1 is now my B Camera... and the NX500 is the C camera. Anyway, on set I quickly discovered my NX1 couldn't handle the 210 MB bit rate. I dialed the NX1 back to 180... then it worked flawlessly for two hours. Battery life was good. Surprisingly the NX1 was only down to 50% battery at the end with 100GB of 4K video on the SD card. Meanwhile, the 64GB SD card on my NX500 filled up really fast. I was only able to use that for about half of the filming session. I'll wrap up this first post with my transcoding experience. I do my editing with the free version of DaVinci Resolve, so transcoding the H.265 is a must. I used After Effects to line-up all the clips and rendered them to HQ DNxHR (I use windows). 98 GB of video off my NX1 SD Card grew into 433 GB worth of DNxHR footage. As a point of comparison, I came away from that same filming session with 370 GB of RAW footage on my BMCC. So serious 4K video eats up a lot of hard-drive space. In my next post I'll talk about how the NX1 footage looked in the grading process...

  25. Great work! One thing though, your black level floor is raised. If you want to get more shadows you should expand your shadows but if you simply raise the floor the only thing you will get is more compression artifacts and washed out dark colors .

  27. I don't see any clipping either or green tint, the 3rd picture has less chroma and lifted blacks.
    1 point
  28. Actually I saw and compared all the pics again. I stand corrected about dynamic range in the 3rd pic. But there is a return to the green tint. Not as much as the 1st pic, but it does return a little. Maybe you could use a warm grade with more orange or yellow while reducing for red grade.
    1 point
  29. Where do you see it clipping? Her face? Maybe my monitor is out of wack... I can see the that the red skintone is significantly reduced between pictures 2 and 3, but I don't see a major increase in the green in picture 3... at least not to the point I say to myself- "it's green!" Anyway, I like both better than the first one.

  30. I like the EOSHD Procolor applied. In the 3rd pic the green colour tint returns with clipping of the dynamic range too.

  36. a7S is not a very good photo camera, for quite some reasons. I would never thought of using one for photos. The obvious solution is to wait for the GH5, it must be pretty obvious really, and maybe the best value for money being the new G85/80 (GX85/80 is even a better of a deal, but for video and ergonomics, I would prefere the G). Have you seen the threads here about the X-T2? Great camera, I would say 60% photos - 40% video (completely unscientific numbers of course!) and the lens options are the best in APS-C sensors. Another such camera (more photo than video) would be the new Olympus as well. With the same money of X-T2 (+ battery grip, you would need that for video) you can buy a slightly used NX1+16-50 S 2-2.8F ( I saw one earlier on ebay with an excellent and almost 500$ flash, grip+3 batteries, the aforementioned S, + the excellent portrait 85mm 1.4f for 2400$ or something, there are similar deals almost every week). There is a whole sub-forum here about that camera and the advanced mod/hack bitrate (up to 180Mbps H265, even more for some, but 160-180 seems very stable), but of course it is a discontinued camera which complicate things, but still is a very capable hybrid with 28megapixels BSI APS-C sensor and 4K video (it can be an advantage, even for 1080p projects) and really great ergonomics and touch screen everything.

  37. I added another lut on top of the Pro Color, that crushed the blacks in the final step. I wanted to see how far I can grade it with the Pro Color as a base. If you compare the SOTC and the Final there's some detail there in the blacks. It was more a matter of taste on how much contrast I wanted.

    GH5 Prototype

I am glad that's been cleared up. Thought for a moment we might be heading for a ten page debate similar to the senor crop factor / light gathering fiasco from last year. This is the most excited I have been about a camera that I have no intention of buying since first taking an interest in video three years ago. The GH5 was on my immediate radar before settling for the a7sii and I might well have bought it had it arrived a year earlier, or a large sum of money I was owed had arrived a year late. I like Panasonic and hope that the GH5 is a huge success for the company and for those who buy it. Certainly, 4k 60p will become the standard for prosumer cameras from now on and I expect that the a7riii and a7siii will both need it in order for Sony to remain on the same pitch.

  40. It's a little nervous on focus/stabilization here and there? Other than that it looks better than I expected and have seen. You seem to pull off some nice results/looks, m43-esque, whereas a lot of these first hands-on videos made it more look like a mweh so-so camcorder. Didn't really check it out that much when I had the chance last month. Did notice how bulky the damn thing seemed. What I really want is a LX200 though, treated in a similar way with all the useful upgrades!

  43. You're not wrong about Oly. And I shoot Fuji as well, so all these things are part of the mixed bag. The thing is, when we're talking price, when we're looking at cameras within similar classes, the difference is typically a few hundred bucks. At a certain point, determining my camera purchase can turn into a "penny wise and pound foolish," decision. A few hundred, or even a grand, is a small price to pay to own and use a camera that I'm comfortable with and does the things I need it to do. You know how it is. You balance liabilities of the gear with the needs of your work and one's own biases. For instance, I just did 6 30-min documentaries in 6 months. I did it with the GX85 and EM5II. I'm not lying when I say that I'm glad I did the job on these consumer cameras rather than something like an Arri. One would look INCREDIBLY better than the other, and I would love to use that camera for many many many things, but I wouldn't have been able to do half the work load (nor the radically informal work that yielded a lot of good results) without the flexibility of these goofy, small, hybrid, IBIS, 8-bit, cams. I know it's hard to fathom among a forum like this, but having the best IQ is not always a priority. My favorite industry idioms comes from the National Geographic guys. It's simply, "f8 and be there." And I think you can understand the sentiment of that saying. That's why I can't get caught up to much in the IQ debate. My factors for my particular work rely on a lot more than just IQ. You'll have other needs. Someone else will have other requirements as well. For instance, I'm doing a cinematic doc/narrative in 2017, and I plan on using a Sony F5 and 100% static shots, so it's always always an "it depends" sort of answer with tools one decides to use for a project.

  47. If the Canon had lovely 1080p, I'd get one. But it doesn't. It's 2008 style "720p" from a knackered 550d/T2i. WHY???? I don't like Sony for stills - it's all a bit charmless. This happens more so once you've held a X-T2 or EM1. I really don't like anything with a 1" sensor. Boring. My RX10 II had a very early grave. Aside this negativity, a friend asked me for a quick tutorial on his 5D mk III. While many enthusiasts are giving Canon a lot of stick, there's still a lovely charm when it comes to using a DSLR. Looking through the optical viewfinder and firing those continuous shots just seems really satisfying, although I thought my hands had shrunk when holding the body. Panasonic might have a killer on their hands in the GH5. Looking forward to your G81828384858687 review or whatever it's called. I do like Panasonic. I do.
