  1. This is a rant... I don't know if you guys have noticed but there are a ton of bullshit camera related videos on YouTube now. If you want to see what I'm talking about, search 'Fuji XT2' and sort by Upload Date. You'll be rewarded with a metric ton of computer generated slide shows, slide shows with computer-generated audio, low rez versions of copied videos from reputable YouTubers like Max Yuryev, DPReview, The Camera Store's or the Northrop's channel. When did it get this bad!?

    GH5 Prototype

Photo consumers are moved by things they don't understand/really need all the time, haha. Kinda reminds me a little of this: I see no real reason for the GH5 to be a larger form factor if it can be fit into a photo-cam shape/size/weight. If Panasonic made a larger cam I would hope that it would be closer to the Varicams in ability. Like a super FS7.

  3. As the speedbooster reduces the focal length, you should probably put the new focal length (for example 0.71x50mm, or whatever combination you have of speedbooster and lens).

  5. I have been using my A7s as a STILLS camera for two years now in all lighting conditions. There has never been a situation where I wanted a different camera. I don't consider ISO 6400 to be "low light" anymore. The A7s is not a camera for shooting sports with machine gun AF though I have used it for sports from time to time and especially for night time sports found it to be quite good (my longest decent lens is an old manual focus 300 2.8 that I have used across systems), I have had plenty of photos published in newspapers (including sports) using it over the years and would happily submit photos from the A7s using it. Sure, I would get MORE shots using a D750 and the latest greatest AF 300 2.8 but I can not afford that and from my experience, in plenty of situations, I would be using a higher shutter speed with my MF lens and A7s than someone with the Nikon combination would. I would happily do a "shootout" but it would NOT just be for one thing where the A7s is not good, but would be just about anything. I actually PREFER the AF of my A7s over the Canon 7D I used to have. The Canon was a bit faster to focus and could focus on much faster moving things but was less accurate, much more limited in focus areas and gave up earlier. My AF needs are pretty similar to the OPs from the original post (maybe I use AF a bit more even for stills and video but not to the OP's level for video), partly why I suggest they at least TRY an A7s if possible. Look, the D750 is a nice camera and for many it would be the choice of the two. It is not for me as, A) No EVF (I much prefer an EVF these days). B) Larger than I would like C) ISO limited (I often use ISOs - with and without auto focus) at ISOs higher than the D750 can go, that is not to say it is still a good camera at high ISOs but for my needs, the A7s is better). D) In good light, with my fast lenses, I often need 1/8000, the D750 is limited to 1/4000. E) I like using focus peaking with AF with my two native AF lenses. F) I like using Canon lenses as I can use them (with AF and full electronic control) on both my A7s and GX7), couldn't do that with a D750. G) My favourite lens is a manual focus wide angle tilt shift lens that I use for lots of things but including walk around at night and for live band stills and video. Couldn't do that with Nikon anything currently (though the new 19mm PC lens looks promising, they just need a FF Nikon mirrorless now). There are other reasons Anyway, while the D750 is a great camera, I will stick to my A7s for stills and video, again in all lighting ("lousy" AF and all!). It is very early now so I am going for a morning walk with just my A7s and 28-70 FE kit lens. AF will be just fine with auto ISO set to ISO 102400, then later tonight (New Years Eve), I will go shoot a band (or two) and including lots of people in pub lighting and using AF as well as MF and I bet it works just fine.

  7. I average $1 per 1000 views and have yet to earn $250 in two years lol. It is good to be monetised, though, just in case you film something extraordinary that gets a few hundred million views in a short time whereby advertisers fall over themselves to pay the top rate for a few months. My biggest gripe are the spammy companies offering to license your video and offer you 60% - how generous of them. To be a top earner on YouTube you generally have to appeal to the lowest common denominator; which is to have wild hair, a whacky disposition, be stunningly good looking, have a knack for tapping into the brains of the near dead, master the art of false humility and get people to feel sorry for you, be a big fat show off or any combination of those listed. There are many seriously talented folk on YouTube who get nowhere in terms of hitting a million subscribers (or even a thousand in many cases) but then that is not why they are there in the first place. Philip Bloom has around 125,000 subscribers Casey Neistat has around 6,125,000 subscribers That tells you all you need to know about this world.

  9. Well the OP has the same problem all us "Poor People" have. Well I guess even rich people have the same problem. No one camera does it all. I am now in the same boat. Sold a few cameras I had. Down to pretty much my G7 to scounge up money. Thinking hard on a C100. And yes the Photos suck on it. 8mp. Yes no 4k, but I really don't need that, have a Panny G7 that does that. Crazy to sell it for what you can get for one. Every ones here has great ideas. Just not the perfect idea, and sad to say there isn't one. Best advice I can add. And it takes damn good stills, really good ones.

  10. If I wasn't to prepared to stay with MFT when I update my GH2 in the near future, I think I'd go down the Nikon path for 1080p Video, and Stills. Those cameras mentioned above have all received high praise, and of course there's Nikon glass as well.

  12. I have done more tests and I found that bringing it down to between 10 - 30% works best depending on profile/ situation for my tests. But it is still an easier step for fast turnaround projects than trying to add some 'blush' with color correction. I also film with daylight balanced lights, so this could be fantastic when I want to add a more tungsten feel. Its a nice tool (for me), but I wouldn't call it a fix. Not that the GH4 needs fixing with regards to its color in lit environments. Just an option.

  14. The MTFs (http://www.fujifilm.com/products/digital_cameras/x/fujinon_lens_xf56mmf12_r/specifications/) show that it's a very good lens already wide open. The optical design is interesting too. I would say that most Fuji lenses are very good wide open and get incredibly sharp stopped down. For me personally Fuji lenses have reached the point, where I don't use the aperture for sharpness control but only for depth of field. There is always enough sharpness.

  16. Youtube has always been full of spam. At least for the past 8 years. There are bots set up to rank crappy slideshows for certain phrases, then affiliate links added. They don't seem to care about the duplicate content thing (stolen videos) either. Instead it is up to the maker e.g. Max to go and find all these stolen videos, then create copyright disputes. Youtube then automatically let Max monetize or remove the videos with their own bots. Humans are rarely involved so if Max is new to it and doesn't file the dispute correctly he may lose, plus there is a rather threatening warning that if you claim wrong your channel is at risk. Youtube has zero customer support. I managed to get an ignorant sentence from an unnamed customer services rep recently. You need to be earning them a lot of money otherwise they arent interested. Even though we have a video with 2.3 million views, no response regarding monetizing it. Vimeo support is excellent, its just a shame they fell so far behind. We have the number 1 type of video for a certain thing and a hundred more. Youtube has been great as a free advertising platform and free video hosting. But despite 4.5 million views on the channel they are not prepared to let me call, or email me to discuss making money with them with a premium channel. Its crazy, they must of lost massive amounts from us and now we want to go 50-50 on a premium subscription channel they don't care. So we have to make SMART TV apps instead and will continue using them for free promotion and hosting. Sorry my rant went a bit sideways there

The 4K Fuji X-T2 is here

There are tripods, monopods, feet (that can walk the distance and use a wider lens!). I am surprised that suddenly IBIS and gimbals became a necessity. Like the a7sii, all of a sudden people prefer shooting in absolute darkness! I am not against IBIS/GIMBALS/HIGH ISO SENSORS, but there are ways working around limitations. After 18 years of pro work, this year was the first to use A7sII and Ronin, great, but only for 3 occasions (2 the A7sii and 1 the Ronin).

  20. A while back, FaceBook was working on a video algorithm that identifies your video through certain unique signatures. Once you upload it to your main FB page, anytime someone uploaded something with a similar one, they'd be flagged for your attention. AFAIK, it's still in beta. This is a much better solution than relying on content creators to find and individually flag videos for YT to take it down. YT could solve this problem if they wanted to do it.

  21. The S lenses are the best AF lenses on the NX ecosystem, the 85 is one of the slowest, especially if you go fast. Quite a big lens, too much glass inside, old design, I wouldn't expect any better. Change the AF speed (I do not own this lens, I do not know), and see how it goes. From time to time I have to work with 5Diii's and I can't stand the image anymore. I am joking about Vasile, he did great for the whole community, but there are people like Otto and Kino Seed that did much too (if not more) and there are still around for a word or two! I believe Otto was the last one had some kind of communication, I can not be sure of course.

Dynamic range could be pushed of it probably does the Log even better. I suddenly suspect that the GH5 may actually be a multi-aspect sensor and thus different from the Olympus EM1 Mark ii. I doubt whether the Dynamic Range will cross 13 stops (the GH4 was 12.8). Also, I wish Panasonic could consider 14 bit RAW or atleast very workable RAW photos. If it does 12 stops in video, it would be be good enough especially if it does 10 bit at pretty high megabits. I wouldn't dismiss the focussing speed on the GH5, though the 6.5 stops of stabilisation (IBIS and OIS) on the EM1 mark ii is absolutely insane.

Nice video, and so true! They have two Varicams, and the one Light, which can be a super FS7 if you like (the "super" part makes it rather expensivy). I would be more interested in a super FS5 (or a hyper C100) and I wouldn't mind if they called it a Varicam Micro, Mini, or whatever. I am one of those people that find the C100 form factor as one of the best for doing run and gun video, which is 95% of my work. It would be interesting to see such a camera with 180fps, 10bit internal, IBIS, whatever - everything for less than 5000. and then I would have a G(X)85 - GH5 and a AF5, or whatever it is called. Covered from all sides, super happy!

  26. What was the lightning conditions where you filmed and what kind of ISO did you use? I find that the camera really struggles at higher ISO's with autofocus in video mode for no reasons whatsoever, in very very poor lighting conditions it struggles with focusing specially with soft textures, at 1.4 aperture I would not really recommend to use autofocus with any camera.

The GH5 is shaping up to be the best sub £2500 camera of all time. Panasonic are truly back on the map - they will shift tonnes of these in the time it takes for their competitors (at that price point) to catch up. 4k 60p will be the new prosumer baseline starting point.

  30. Actually, the A7s (mine Is the first version) is very good for AF. NOT AFC, but AFS is just fine and while it may well hunt in extremely low light, there is hardly any camera that will auto focus at the extremes the A7s can. It is rated at EV -4 but is often stated as being more like EV -5. My GX7 also has EV -4 AF but it can not keep up with the A7s given a similar lens. Video AF somehow does work better for AFC than it does for stills (the FE kit lens works a treat for AF for something like a musician in a confined stage area as long as the movement isn't too rapid). There would be better cameras for AF overall (and just about any for AFC is better) but the A7s is actually pretty good for single shot AF and in almost no light it can focus using the glow from an appliance LED. Even using Canon lenses (which it is slow to AF with), it can AF in light lower than the same lens on just about all current Canons. It has less DR at base ISO than any other FF Sony E mount but it is still more than all the Canons except the 1d x ii and the 5d iv (and is equal with the 80D). It has more than a stop on the 80D by ISO 800, about a stop on the 1Dx ii and 5d iv by ISO 25600. Again, the A7s is an excellent stills camera, (which is why I got it) but it is a better video camera than I need. I love that it can record both XAVCs and 720p MP4 at the same time so when I shoot a song, I have a full size video to play with and a smaller copy I can email to the band (as long as it isn't too long a song.)

  31. @bigfoot Stills shooting: And that is the problem, depending WHAT you shoot. If you want to shoot moving subjects (eg in low light), you need a reliable autofocus. There is not all about IQ and high ISO, but also about focusing. And that's where the a7s II fails. When shooting moving subjects in low light, you simply mostly need a decent AF. And the a7s ii sometimes (in low light) needs 4-6 seconds to focus. For moving subjects, it's simply useless. Most people don't consider that for stills: you don't only need IQ and high ISO capabilities, but excellent AF (accuracy + speed) in low light too. And that's where even a Canon 6D (with its center AF-point) is much more reliable than a a7s ii. The Nikon D750, D4/D4S and the new D5 are herein "focusing kings" in low light, sometimes the D500, though a DX and far away for from high ISO capabilities of newer FX cameras. In complete darkness, all mentionned cameras will surely fail without additional focusing help, but ALL of them have the better AF (even in normal light) than the a7s ii - crucial for photographing moving subjects in critical lighting situations. One famous example: The Nikon D610 is an excellent camera, with a great DR and very good high ISO capabilities (quite similar to the famous D750). But...it doesn't focus properly in the dark, it "can't see" in the dark like other low light kings... So, if you want to shoot stills and your subjects are static, you have the time to wait on getting proper AF or focus manually, as the focus peaking of the a7s ii (and other modern cameras) is very good. If your subjects move (impredictably) and you have to capture them, then go for a stills camera known for focusing quite fast and accurately in low light...

It is someting like YouTube's CPM is reported to be on average $7.60, that means you get paid $7.60 for each 1,000 views. Depends who you are. Casey got more than that trust me per 1,000.

  37. You have no idea what you are talking about....? a7s is a great camera. Raw files are amazing, pretty much any lens will be sharp with it. DR is great overall at low iso (13 stop) and really good at high iso (10 stop / 6400iso). 12mp is more than enough for anything out there ...more than that you are a pixel peeper or cropping the shit out of your photos...! Low light is out of this world. 1080p60 s35 is amazing, 4k output too. 1.1x / 1.2x / 1.3x / 1.4x / 1.5x crop without significant loss of quality Slog2 can be tricky but isn't that hard to master and PPoff with 16-235 re map work good for colors straight off the bat. You can adapt any kind of lens on it. Wifi is fine and great for remote shooting. E-shutter for timelapse - buffer is quick enough with a good card to shoot 1 fps continous for smooth sunset / sunrise Peaking/ zebra and all that fun stuff 2.8k aps-c is upscale to 4k on the hdmi out too... No overheating or what so ever on long recording ... i've done often 4h-6h of prores combine with the atomos shogun Autofocus, I have not a single idea... i've never cared. Don't hesitate to buy it... highly recommended. A great tool overall

  38. When you down scale 2160p 4:2:0 properly you do get 1080p 4:4:4. Whether it is really 10 bit is arguable but it is certainly better than 8 bit. You are not limited to using Cineform you can downscale your source with Avisynth or Vapoursynth and for instance encode it with I-frame only H.264. However I have problems with H.264 10bit 4:4:4 sources in Premiere Pro 2017, but in Resolve they work just fine.

  44. Nice comparison Matt. But what yo are comparing is not a standard in camera setting. You are using the settings in camera are set to work with this LUT. What a more useful comparrison would be is the shot with he LUT applied (Std setting set per documentation) versus another profile with no LUT. i.e the Natural profile which does a very nice job on skin tones. The comparrison you presented here is the same as comparing ungraded versus graded raw footage.
