  1. Hey guys, I put together a behind the scenes video about how I film my travel videos for clients. I have been posting a few of them lately and I plan to post one every week or so. Let me know if you have any questions or comments and please subscribe if you like it!

  2. This lens is one of the main reasons for the m43, at least from my perspective. The compactness yet outstanding results even in lowlight are unmatched. Whenever I want to be really compact, I am using that lens and it never disappoints.

  3. I haven't tried that particular combination, but the 0.64x BMCC Speed Booster has a full millimeter *less* clearance on the camera side than the 0.64x XL. The XL also has a larger image circle that is compatible with the fill size m43 format, and it is also optimized for the standard m43 filter stack rather than the non-standard Blackmagic stack. Odds are you can probably get the BMCC version to work, but you'll probably be pressing on the flexible shutter cover and you won't get optimal image quality.

    Smart Adapter

I have reflected on the possibility of building a smart adapter, But before working on this project I would like to ask you friends of the forum, which would you prefer: 1) Aputure Dec 2) Techart Pro Aputure Dec has the advantage of remote manual control, no mechanism on the adapter, built-in battery, open the iris and the display showing the iris aperture values. Disadvantages, it works only with Canon EF lenses. Techart Pro has the extraordinary advantage of transforming all manual lenses with auto focus lenses, and since the thickness can mount almost all existing lenses. Disadvantages, can not adjust the aperture of the iris of Canon EF lenses, no remote control. This question is not an official communication to work on Autofocus system to Samsung, this depends on the time and money that I can spend, I just want to do a survey to see what you prefer. I look forward to hearing your opinions. - write 1) for Apture Dec; - write 2) for Techart Pro. Thank you

  5. Yeah... that Helium footage looks pretty stellar to me. The reflection of the flashlight of the mirror illuminates her face pretty nicely and then when she shuts the compact and the little poof of dust hits the flashlight beam... really nice. With that being said, the G85 may not be Helium level, but I have been very impressed with what you guys have been getting out of her. Really nice work all around.

  6. It was a 'quick test scene'. I'd say that's pretty darn good for just throwing something together real quick. That said, obviously you've got a point with what you can get out of a camera these days and that it's 'not about the size, but how you use it'. :P That's the sorta thing that made the Philip Bloom and Zacuto shootouts back in the GH2 days so damn exciting. The camera is just a small part of the equation.

  7. Well, you can't get that DR from the LUMIX cams, let's be fair. Still, while I wouldn't turn down shooting certain stuff on that equipment, I can also say, after just editing a project that integrated my GX85 footage with RED M-X sensor footage, my GX85 footage was just better. Of course, I just shot better images than the guy on the RED camera ;-) I'd much rather carry a GX85 into the type of doc shoots I do than a RED. The newer RED cams are nice, but for what purpose? You need to know what suits your needs on a shoot. If you know what you're doing, and the demands for IQ are modest, the 8-bit hybrids can really get you where you need to go image-wise. That's my doc bias though... All that said, I'd gladly give an Alexa mini a whirl.

  8. Andy Less (one of the mods here), shot a feature film with a handful of Panasonic G7 cameras: Though if I was shooting a feature, I'd spend the little bit extra for a G80 (and try to twist the producer's arm to get a GH5 as well....).

  9. HitFilm and/or Vegas Pro are my top votes for editing if you're starting out. (or Premiere Pro if you'll likely be working with/for others professionally in the future, as it is a near universal program) As for camera, just stay with your Panasonic GX1 and Nikon F mount lenses, that is an absolutely fantastic starting point for a beginner!! Yes, there are better options, many of them very tempting indeed, and very attractively priced. But this is a never ending circle that can suck you down forever.... First you consider the G7, it is so cheap secondhand it is almost free! No brainer decision. Let's buy it. But.... the G80 isn't really "that much" more is it in cost to buy? And it has IBIS! However... now we're nearly halfway in price to a GH5, and that is omgmyballz amazing!!! Should get that instead. But however now we're nearly halfway in price to buying a Kinefinity Terra 5K!!!! OMGAMAZINGZWTF!!!! Whoops, that is my phone ringing, let me answer that.... oh hello Mr Bank Manager, what are you calling about, my overdraft? Oops. Thus I say stick with you GX1 and Nikon lenses you have for now. If you simply ABSOLUTELY CAN NOT resist the itch to spend money on gear (I know I know, I've been there, I understand!!), then instead spend it on filling in the gaps in your lens collection (maybe you need a UWA? Or a portrait lens? This too can go on forever....). As at least lenses can last you for decades. Or get a few quality audio pieces (microphones can also easily last you over a decade! I just purchased a newly two thousand dollar microphone myself... :-o ). Or lighting gear! Again, this should last you longer than a camera body will. And quality lighting used effectively will go much further towards making your film look amazing than a new camera will! Then once you've progressed and learned more, maybe in 2018 give in to buying a new camera? By that point you'll be able to pick up a G80 for today's G7 prices, or less!

  10. I've been a Panasonic user since the GH2 and each upgrade has been fantastic. They've successfully delivered worthwhile improvements in every area of function and image and seem to really listen to their user base. It's an exciting yet reliable system to be a part of. The GH5 looks certain it will continue this trend and two areas of promising improvement seem to be low light and colour given the current videos (an area where Canon has historically had the edge). However, like @Flynn says, a lot of Canon users love the colour science and can't let it go despite the cameras lacking functionality and features. If that specific mojo inspires you to make films then you may struggle with a switch to Panasonic. How do you use your cameras? For earning money, for filmmaking on the side, or a mixture of both? I use them for both so the practicality and features of the Panasonics win the day. I think I would feel like I had one arm tied behind my back if I tried making a living as videographer with a 1DC now. My other thought, was that if your dream is to clear your debts and get to LA (not far off mine!) then I would be making all my decisions based on what would get me there faster. At the end of the day, mojo, lowlight, codecs, and all the jazz we are all guilty of getting sucked into on this forum, are secondary to having a great idea, writing it and shooting it. If you've got something dynamite, it can be shot on anything and other factors such as writing, lighting, acting and editing will be what get your piece noticed. Final thought, networking in LA will probably advance your career more than any camera ;-)

  11. Hey Jon, I'm not a big fan of monopods (in certain situations) but I have a Slik mini 11 tripod that I quite often use as a chest brace, and becuase I have to shoot using the viewfinder it gives me even more stability. The only problem I ever had was you could notice your breathing on longish takes, but I'm wondering if IBIS might iron out any chest movement from breathing. It is also a great little tripod for low shots, table tops etc https://www.amazon.com/Slik-II-Table-Top-Tripod-2-75lbs/dp/B003J8RHKG

  13. Not sure I would part with a 1DC for a GH5. The image from the 1DC looks great. But I would certainly consider it as a B-cam.

  18. Hi everyone, I've been building a library of images that you are welcome to use in your projects. They might be useful under titles, for visual effects or anything else you can think of. They are all original...all my own work. All I ask is to be attributed as indicated on my homepage: http://soundimage.org/ The images are on my "TXR" pages (for "Textures.") I'm adding new ones all the time, so be sure to check back often. I sincerely hope that some of them are useful. Any and all constructive feedback is welcome and always appreciated. :-) All the best, Eric

  19. @kidzrevil that video above sums up for me how I feel about the XC10. In good light, like the outdoors shots, the camera gives a lovely image which can be pushed quite hard in grading. But when light is low, the image is not good - it's mushy, falls apart in the grade, colour rendition suffers and ghosting is a PITA. For what kidzrevil needs to do - fashion, music vids, etc. - image quality is paramount and the XC10 doesn't cut the mustard. For more casual stuff like travel vids and documentation it's absolutely fine. I promised to post a few frame grabs to show off what the camera can do when conditions are right. The weather was great the other day so we went for a walk. I brought along the XC10 as I wanted to check out how an X-Rite Colorchecker might improve colour separation using MBR Color Corrector 2 plugin for AE (it did help). No look LUTs here. Everything is EOS Standard, corrected for colour using the X-Rite, and a simple white balance, contrast and saturation adjustment.

    Canon XC10 4K camcorder

I know we are a distrustful bunch, but I can verify I do actually have an XC10, I'm not trying to sell it to you as a rare non-ghosting collectable safari edition, and my younger sister isn't pregnant which is why I'm risking my EosHD credibility and my promising career at dental school :-) I am just finishing an edit of something that should be suitable to post publicly, so I'll do that when I get a chance. Its nothing groundbreaking just a montage of some travel shots with the family but I was happy with the quality. I might even set my XC10 to iso20000 and wave it madly in front of a vase or similar to see if I do get any ghosting. I understand where you are coming from, and that you wish to make sure any prospective buyers don't just get the rose tinted view of the camera. I also appreciate the ghosting may be a show stopper for some. But my point is, which I think is valid and also important for prospective buyers to know, is that there are XC10 users out there who are happy with their cameras and that in their real world use aren't bothered by ghosting (regardless of whether their camera produces it or not). Nice vid by the way.

  21. Ive never seen any ghosting when shooting the XC10. Ive never seen it in your footage either until you pointed it out on a freeze frame. Haven't looked through my footage in search for it either, maybe its there, maybe it isn't. Still a great camera imo.

  22. Are you creating user names so you can answer your own questions? I was gonna say it was a canon in B&W to prove a point that without the color you get a soft image? But since you're a Panasonic man, I would say it's a GM1?

  24. I will probably give pro color a try, your samples look great. But conversely, isn't the point of Pro Color to give Sony a more Canon-like palette? Idk, I find Sony colors to be kinda interesting, they almost have a 16mm film-like color to them. But in the absence of a capable Canon camera at that price point, I guess a Canon-esque color palette makes sense and well worth the price of admission.

  25. Yes it is a damn pity there are no real options when it comes to super affordable 5" (or even 4") monitors with at least semi ish decent specs (like say the Feelworld FW760 has). That Neway is kinda tempting, anyone here using it and can report back about it?

  26. I was on the same boat as you, i had been shooting stills for some time (D800) and wanted to get into video just for the fun of it so i got a G7 and the Zhongyi Lens Turbo Adapter, this way i can still use my lenses and have 4k and the 60p HD option. I am actually selling that kit at the moment (the G7 with kit lens + adapter). PM me if you are interested. This was shot with that kit (G7 with lens adapter with 35mm f1.4 sigma art and Samyang 14mm f2.8) last saturday and edited on the same day, it was meant to be a test.

No way, not going to happen! We'll probably get *ONE* of those specs you mentioned in the a7S mk3. If we're very lucky we'll get *TWO* of those specs. If we're very very *very* lucky then we could get as many as *THREE* of what you mentioned. But to get *all* of that?? Sorry, you need to wait for the a7S mk10 to get that! haha Remember Panasonic had 10bit (though external) with the GH4 years ago, and ***still*** no other camera manufacturer has caught up (for whatever reasons, political/costs/marketing/mismanagement/blindness/whatever) in offering this in one of their consumer stills cameras. When others are still behind the GH4, I wouldn't feel optimistic about them leaping ahead of the GH5 any time soon.

  31. I've used the Zhiyun Crane on 2 shoots now with the A6500 - and it's the first time ever that I've been really pleased with a camera / gimbal combo. The Zhiyun is a beast and operates brilliantly. Works very well with the A6500 autofocus. The only real downside is that the A6500 doesn't have 4k60p, the 1080 60p is just ok, so I'd say it really depends on the GH5's autofocusing capability. I'm covered for cameras, the GH5 would be a treat if anything. How long until we see 4K 60p in Sony cameras? (But it likely won't be 10 bit in a firmware upgrade!)

    Sell my 1DC for GH5?

Smart move to do some tests and then decide. You sound pretty happy with what you've got. A lot of Canon people seem to get super disappointed when moving to another system. But, if you end up preferring the GH5, get what you can out of the Canon. Not like you won't be able to buy another one down the road, probably for much less.

Overall I've been very happy with mine in the field -haven't seen any serious ghosting with higher iso's. I've found it to be very easy to use with nice IQ, and quite refreshing compared to a hybrid mirrorless where video is secondary to stills.

    Canon XC10 4K camcorder

Its amazing how the XC10 went from crap-what was Canon thinking, to the XC10 is amazing-how did the internets get this camera so wrong, back to the XC10 is crap-I won't ever believe what the internets tell me ever again. In reality, it has very nice IQ in good light, and better than expected IQ in low light given the sensor size and slow lens. IMO it makes up for any low light deficiencies with the form factor, c-log, lens range and great image stabilisation. If you use it for what is it intended and play to its strengths, its a nice compliment to a C100. Its not an A7S but then its probably not really fair to compare a 12 megapixel full frame sensor to a 12 megapixel 1 inch sensor for pure IQ in low light. In good light, I think it holds it own and is very very easy to match to other C cameras.

  41. Keep in mind rolling shutter can be an issue even outside of action and handheld. If your vision for the film involves quick pans, complex camera moves, or any objects that might move quickly through frame (cars, trains, a running person, etc) it'll be a noticable problem. Imagine something like Boogie Nights or Shaun of the Dead with huge rolling shutter skew. It would ruin half the movie. Overheating can be a real thorn too. When you need to wrap a location because they need you out at a certain time, but you can't get the shots you need because the camera has a flashing temperature warning, you might wish you'd forgone the better DR in favor of a camera that would run steadily through the day without hickups. Or when you're on your fifth take of a Ronin shot, everything's finally going perfect, and then your camera ruins the take? Your operator is going to be pissed, and rightly so. You'd better have an AC on set with an organized charging station too, or batteries are going to be an issue. A6300 burns through them like a mother. You either buy 3-4 and keep them charging, or buy 8-10 and make damn sure they're 100% before you come to set. Even then, you should bring two wall chargers. To me, Panasonic is just less hassle. Plus cheaper, so you can spend more on lights, lenses, art, locations, crew, and talent.

I have an actual photo of a Sony engineer testing the A7SIII E.F in beta mode. Here's a Sony engineer running away from the scene after testing the 4k60p. The battery was short lived and went brightly nuclear shortly after, that's why they call it Elephant's Foot. Jokes apart (although Chernobyl is no joke), I love, love, love my RX10II but I rather complement it with a GH5 than a small battery, 30 mins limited, tilty screen and who knows what limitations more, one SD card a7siii.

  45. I can see only 2 dark spots regarding this camera till now. One is the auto focus performance, as mentioned above, and the other is what panasonic calls Three-Dimensional Color Control. If AF is indeed 2 times faster than gh4 and 3DCC actually helps the user to get rid off that ugly orange skintones, even with tweaking, this will be a dream video camera. Again, fingers crossed....

  49. It was a paid upgrade before so it's nothing new, sony charges 500dollar for a 4K upgrade on their x70. Panasonic has always released their camera's at a very competitive pricepoint and cheaper then the competition so even with the VLOG upgrade it's still very good value for money, also, not everyone needs or wants VLOG and for those who do it's 100 dollar which is peanuts.
