  1. I had some free time today and so I went into the studio and did some tests. They aren't very proper and they aren't the best in the world...but hopefully this will help someone out there! I used some of the EOSHD Canon picture profiles for the 1DC part so check that out! I am by no means a professional colorist. I tried to balance the images best I could in Resolve. You will notice that some shots are a tad blurry....I'm sorry about that. I had continuous autofocus on. Here are my findings: Canon 1DC: It's totally still relevant. The fact that this camera came out in 2012 and is competing with the new C300 mkii is incredible. Official Canon Log: Is great. It grades really nicely and is really clean and natural looking. Totally recommended. The 4k 4:2:2 8bit is much better than the 1080p 4:2:0 of the C100. EOSHD C-Log: Its good for sure but not as good as built in Canon Log on the 1DC. I need to play more with it but I had some troubles with it. Other EOSHD profiles: These are fun! I love the Monochrome one a lot! C100: Its done. Too old. Image is soft. Has terrible artifacts. Built in codec is total crap. Get this guy out of here. Wide DR if handled properly could be a good profile to shoot most things on. Its not too flat so the low bitrate doesn't fall apart as much. C300 mkii: This is the best camera of the three (as it should be) but not by much in relation to 1DC! Canon Log and Canon Log 2 aren't very good. Canon Log 3 seems just about right as far as nailing the color science. Everything balanced really nicely and looked great. 4K 10Bit really holds together nicely when grading. I thought 1080p 12bit would be stronger...but I really didn't notice much of a difference between it and the 4k footage. Slow motion: It's OK. There are other cameras coming out that have better slow motion abilities. To go past 60fps you have to crop in on the sensor by 2x which turns the crop from being 1.4x (Super35) to 2.8! That's more than micro four thirds.

  2. Heres my latest entries : This last one is still private, its only due next week, but since this is a specialty forum, there should be no harm. Everything shot on the NX1+16-50s 2.8, and graded with my own Vellichor luts, available for purchase here if any of you wants to have a look - https://sellfy.com/p/HNAk/ Hope you guys enjoy :D

  3. Hello everyone, these days I started working in a new project for the construction of an smart adapter, by accident I discovered that the NX1 offers 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi wireless networking connectivity compatible with IEEE 802.11b/g/n, as well as the faster 802.11ac standard which has enough bandwidth to stream 4K video wirelessly over 500Mbit/s. Can anyone verify this?

  4. Was walking to my local Starbucks to study. A dj was playing in the street at night all I had was my nx-1 and my super beat up $20 canon fd 50mm 1.4 all hand held found the song on a Creative Commons website.

  5. The focus change is pretty quick with AF-c, but I'm not using it to pull focus, for that I'd use MF and just use the back button as a backup. You can slow tings down a bit in post if you don't cut it out. As far as SS,I'm using it a lot when just shooting tourist stuff, if I want a critical shot I'll put my $$20 Hoya vari-ND (surprisingly good, got it off eBay) on the lens and keep the SS at 1/50 or 1/60. The 50-140 is awesome, much better than the similarly priced Sony 70-200/4 and on par with CaNikon's best. I wish I could have taken it with me, but the lighter 55-200 got the nod. Cheers

  7. Would like to know what you think about our newest work. Shot with the infamous Panasonic GH4, internal V-LOG 8bit, -5/-5 NR and sharpness. Used Panasonic lenses: 12-35mm 2.8, 20mm 1.7 and 42.5mm 1.7. Used a Tiffen Black Satin Filter to get rid of the sharpning artifacts still left over at -5 and add some smoothness to highlights and shadows. Budget: about 0$.

  8. I think your one gets it right for this shot. CG makes it look too dark and turns her skin brown.

  9. Exactly, if you take a look of the supported camera they haven't released any solid firmware for years now. http://builds.magiclantern.fm/ The most recent one are the 5Dmk3 and 700D... With Canon being so behind now, especially with the 5D4, I think the dev team decided to move on and focus on more interesting projects instead of trying to rescue crippled camera from the 90s. I'm still using the 6D and 5D3 here. Going to buy the GH5 and waiting for the next generation of Sony A7.

  10. Thank you! Dynamic range is the NX1 weak point, specially the highlights, you really need to preserve as much highlights as possible or else the image will become very digital. However, having tried a lot of "prosumer" cameras (nothing fancy, just Canons, Nikons, Sonys, Panasonic etc) this is yet my favorite camera...even against my new sony a7sII...And im not just talking about the experience, but the image itself, samsung surprises me everytime I load my sd cards in my computer, and with the sony, only after quite a bit of tweaking the image starts to look good. Maybe because im still not used to this camera, but the NX1 was an amazing surprise, and it was worth every single penny I payed for it.

  12. @iamoui In my eyes, "Baltimore" is some footage highlighting the strengths of the NX1. The NX1 simply delivers one of the best 120fps 1080p quality (apart of much more expensive pro cameras) available on the market. I personally love the amount of detail and (sometimes) the unbelievable "clinical sharpness" of this camera... BUT it's not very easy to get to a cinematic look (texture, the right amount of grain and smoothness, "flair", etc.) into the footage. I've seen some specialists yet, who were very capable in NX1 "cinematic postproduction", but 95% of the as cinematic declared NX1 footage is simply failed wannabe - when talking about "filmic look"...I'm still putting a bunch of time in getting to the right workflow and balanced colour science and texture in post...Just hoping to get there someday... ;-)

  13. True that. Yeah, the other clips worked quite a bit better. I just personally only use LUTs to toggle different looks, to quickly see what would work best and then start from scratch. Of course, that's quite a bit more time consuming, but it avoids certain recognizable 'LUT looks' if you will and gets you a tailored look to fit the scene. Concerning the clip with the couple, you did a pretty nice job yourself, with the LUT, it was a big too neon in the reds for me, e.g. her hair turned Trump orange. * original * tweaked I'm more of a let blonds be blond and greens be green kinda guy, so I preferred your own grade which was close to this tweaked one. Not sure if I messed up his shirt color or improved it, I wasn't there, my eyes only know the color of natural things, so skin, hair, grass, leafs, etc.

  15. I shoot with a dual camera setup using the BMCC 2.5(RAW mode) and a Hacked Samsung NX1. 60% of the time I like the BMCC image better. It doesn't have as much resolution, but the dynamic range looks really, really good. To see the original bmcc in all it's glory, check out my YouTube production diary thread here: NOTE: The crop factor is awful, I think the MFT version with a speed booster is a MUST.

  16. Today I shot footage for two more upcoming episodes. This time I had the BMCC and NX1 on a tripod for interview style talking-head video. I'll have more info on that later in the week. Meanwhile, I've worked out a good system for backing up video archives... Low Budget Video Backup Solution For the Carry Trainer video series essentially all my footage is stored on two large hard-drives. That works pretty well. Internal hard-drives are cheap these days and with a USB 3.0 connection the speed is good enough. I've never had a hard-drive fail yet, but it happens. Sooner or later hard-drives fail... they aren't designed as a long-term storage solution. I've been thinking about a off-site backup solution. Due to the sheer size of the footage I shoot, Blu Ray seemed like the only plausible solution. I don't even want to try pushing 6TB+ up to the cloud. I checked out Archival Blu Ray discs, and they were a bit too expensive. Then, reading the specs on a regular Blu Ray - R discs, I learned the regular shelf life for those is pretty good. I forget the source, but they are rated at 20-30 years. For my YouTube Channel that's good enough. I want something that lasts about 10 years that I can easily store off-site. Once I settled on Blu Ray Recordable Discs, the next challenge was a system for spreading data across many discs. I break up my footage archives by Episodes. Episodes 1-5 are grouped together and roughly 450 GB. Initially I tried CDBurnerXP, which has a nice disc spanning function... that didn't go well. The program would choke on the individual DNG files from my BMCC. Perhaps 450 GB was just too big for it? I let the program go for three days non-stop with no success and had to move on. Then I tried WinZip, which in combination with ImgBurn, works great. With WinZip I can take large projects and break them down into chunks for each disc. The WinZip program is powerful and fast. There's even a setting for "No Compression" on WinZip, which is perfect for video files(where everything is usually already compressed). My Episodes 1-5 directory broke up nicely into 22 files. Now I'm using ImgBurn, a good disc writing program, to write one file to each disc. I prefer ImgBurn for archival purposes over the default Windows Tool, because it thoroughly verifies each disc after writing it. This topic is a bit boring, however as video makers it's important to have some system in place if you're working on valuable stuff.

  17. Hey mawnnn, the C300 II with ARRI compatible settings rocks: Canon Log 2, Cinema Gamma, and Production Matrix. Then use an ARRI LUT to Rec709 in post and add saturation & contrast as desired- really fast & easy: We also use the 1DX II, and while it looks excellent, the C300 II with ARRI compatible color is like using an Alexa with autofocus. To speed up production and save diskspace, we use 1080p24 50Mbps (IPB) most of the time. 4K is used for wide shots that we crop in post (faster & easier than doing a 2 camera shoot). Ya gotta use the C300 II in production to really appreciate it beyond tests: it's underrated until you've used it for a while

  18. I think your critique is valid in this clip--and is probably due to my grading. CF enables you to do a lot with reds/yellows. The image too blue IMO. I was trying to be very conservative in grading it. But what about the couple I shot later and the landscapes? It's not that you can't get good results otherwise, it's the steps are so quick and easy using the LUT, as I tried to show in the three steps I demonstrated several times in the footage.

  19. Well, out of camera is quite workable; I'd say that. But, you could get there yourself with perhaps a little nicer results... * The Original *A quick 'n rough Cinegain fix * Your result Instead of Canon warmth, the last one has that blueish pinkish vibe of the EOSHD LUT. Skin & lips look unnatural to me. I only really liked the results at nighttime, perhaps it's due to the warmth of incandescent lights. But you know, different people different taste and all. I just like it a little more subtle.

  21. Sorry mat33 but you can do everything perfectly right with a C100 or C300, the only issue is that the camera is much bigger, and I will have to go to the gym for some months before start the project, I agree if the ghosting was not there I would probably choose an XC10…..which certainly was my first option, luckily we have in our community a cinematographer with so high standards like @kidzrevil who showed us what everybody else missed before I pressed BUY bottom…..

  24. I just received the fw760 today (firmware 1.66). I haven't noticed any issues with it (samsung NX1) but after reading this post i confirm that Sharpness is reset after Focus peaking is toggled. At 1920x1080 there is no latency as far as i see. Maybe at 4k but i have no plans to use that. One small thing that happened is that the Zebra IRE setting got reversed. I had it set to 90IRE and after messing with the menu for a while that got reversed so i have to set it to 10 IRE to achieve same effect. :-) Other than that i see nothing wrong with this monitor, great value. The Aperture monitor only has 70/80 IRe, i have no idea what the NX1 uses but i liked the ability to set it to whatever i wanted. That and the price.

  25. Well, some real-life issues could be: you are working in a documentary and you are following your character during the night, you are following him in a forest, in a cave, he start running late in the day and you running behind…..etc….
    1 point
  26. The real life corollary is when you need to shoot something that moves significantly from frame to frame in low light. In practice ghosting is a problem from 1250 ISO up. But aggressive noise reduction artifacts aren't limited to motion. Check out the image softening that occurs with static scenes going from 500 to 1000.

  29. The point has been missed a bit.... I'm not suggesting the iphone is a great tool for wedding videos... or that it is a cheap way to do it. All I'm saying is that the composition, editing, sound etc have made this look really good and something we often lose focus of

  30. The a7s doesnt have as much of a yellow cast as the a7sii, so dialing down the white balance matrix settings Andrew provided (matrix not white balance) might make it warmer. Also if your using s-gmaut as a substitute on the a7s, use the V2 version for the a6500.

  31. Panavision C-series is THE look. That is what everyone thinks of when they imagine the ideal anamorphic image. Blade Runner, Die Hard. Alien, Pulp Fiction. Chinatown. Punch-Drunk Love. The list goes on and on. It's the perfect combination of crisp blue flares, fall-off, vignetting, creamy bokeh, vertical breathing and barrel distortion. Entire films have been shot on the 40mm lens alone. That said, there's a set of Lomo Roundfronts at the rental house where I work, and they look pretty sweet as well. Lots of distortion, unpredictable flares and aberrations, all the weird funky shit you get with old Soviet glass. I love 'em.

  32. Nothing wrong with shooting an Alexa, but I do think that anyone in film production that truly believes technical superiority offers the best path to creative achievements has some goofy priorities. I get why aspiring filmmaker folks want to do their best technically, but to prioritize it above the artistic craft is nuts. It's there to support the thing you're trying to accomplish, not the thing itself. There's no real way forward in being a filmmaker with that attitude.

    Trump is POTUS now what?

    1. Be the voice of free America. Say and show that human beings of different ethnics can live together peacefully. 2. Propagade the positive values, liberty, fraternity, equality, solidarity, inclusion, justice. Not the words alone, but what they mean in everyday life. 3. Reinstate facts over fearmongering, hysteria and conspiracy theories. All conspiracy theories ("Deep State") tend to be bizarr exaggerations of very banal truisms, i.e. that corruption exists (everywhere, by the way) and that there indeed is a swamp. A criminal detective would ask cui bono? In a capitalist system? Do we really need to speculate? Rich elites of course. Make their interests transparent! Obamacare (with all it's faults) was financed by progressive taxes, who will pay in the future? 4. And: reinstate facts over false political correctness. Lets add honesty to the positive values under point 2. 5. Don't attack Trump. Facts don't stick to him. Everybody already knows why he doesn't show his tax reports. That his crew is not qualified for the tasks assigned to them. And so forth. A bag full of shit can't be critizised. Better stop this kind of scandal-obsessed celebrity journalism which made him all too famous in the first place. Clinton was impeached for Lewinsky, but he stayed in office. These things are not what policy is about. 6. Trumps "reign" can be an opportunity. Become aware (and make others aware) what has been accomplished in the past decades. And what we risk losing by DJT. Ignore the ridiculous enemy. Unite to show the world how great America is. For us non-Americans, it always had it's sinister sides too. Would global capitalism - uncontrollabe for a single nation (and not to be stopped by any kind of protectionism) and a severe threat to our planet and our species - exist without the USA? The good thing is, if you survive this regime, you will be stronger. I mean not militarily or economically ...
