  1. Looking forward to seeing how your medium format speed booster goes They make it in E mount and SL mount You're right, once you get bitten by the Leica bug you want more and more until you go broke The used price of the SL, I've seen as low as £4200 in the UK. Mine was £5000 new. With Sony churning out their mass market stuff for £3500 new, the price difference isn't as big as people think - you get a lot from Leica for your extra dosh The SL is a niche camera made in much smaller quantities and it is nicer in almost every way to shoot with especially stills I also like how you can enter video mode with a single press of a dedicated button and it can remember to stay in when you turn the camera off and on again, unlike the Samsung NX1. No dwiddling the mode dial. It doesn't even have a mode dial. Then you have a user favourites menu on one press, put the video resolution and frame rates as top option, so you can be in there changing between 4k and 120fps 1080p on one page in just 2 presses. Try doing that with a Sony It has the best joystick of any camera, it is like tweaking a nipple, on a very nice supermodel. RAW stills quality is similar to the 1D X Mark II. Low light performance is also very good.

  2. Does ANYBODY have a proper comparison video up yet? What about a direct split screen comparison between the 10bit and 8bit mode? And does 10bit make a difference in the grade? Aside from Neumann all the coverage this time has been total lightweight fluff. Really lazy. Quickly punted out, to collect hits. I honestly don't think any of the testers have put more than 5 minutes of work per video into what they have done. Can't find anything comprehensive at all. They really should have given me a camera, the retards

  3. This is a new video where I mix three years of CinemaScope footage from 4 different lens. A surreal nature reel. I hope you enjoy. Filmed on a GH4 in 4k. Finished in 2.35:1 CinemaScope Anamorphic lens used - Baby Hypergonar 1.75x 8mm, Bolex 16/32 1.5x, Kowa C-35 1.5x and Kowa 1.75x Inflight Rectilux Core DNA and 3FFS were used.

  4. This was recorded on the SL in 4K DCI L-log and a Pix-E5H recorder. The SL is an interesting beast if you want good video and stills. Only downsides I can see are $ and that if you want AF then the native lens are big and expensive. While its expensive, Lecia tend to hold their resale value so if you look at total cost of ownership, it may end not being too bad. I for one would much rather have the SL body only than a Sony + lens.

  5. The LAOWA may have a silly name, but it looks absolutely stunning. You're right, the Sigma 30mm F1.4 is a great bargain I have the Panasonic-Leica 25mm F1.4 DG and it's just ok. The original Four Thirds Leica 25mm F1.4 D, was better optically, better mechanically and had OIS. miss that beast I have the Sigma 30mm F1.4 on E-mount and even on APS-C there's hardly any distortion and the corners are tack sharp.

  6. Hello ttbek, how are you? You must keep up to date, if you come on the forum every month you will always find new surprises. The next series will predisposition of electrical contacts. I will make a version NXL mute and a version with electronic controls. Currently, for practical reasons, it is being tested, the Aputure Dec control that allows: 1) iris control Canon lenses; 2) Stabilizer Canon lenses; 3) WiFi Control focus; 4) recording 2 subjects for quick changes of focus. Currently I started the study of a smart autofocus system, but this will take a little time. How can you help me? Been programming? You want to finance my project? Or both? P.S. If you ship me the NXL I can update it for telephoto compatibility.

  7. I got mine from a friend, he bought it on Amazon. Still haven't receive any reply from Cinemartin. I sent an email to Cinemartin asking if they are the same monitor. The software interface looks identical that's where my suspects came from. Still haven't receive any reply. SMALL UPDATE: Feelworld back to work after Chinese New Year. They sent me an email telling me they're gonna look at the issues I pointed out. Will keep you updated.

  9. Here is the first thing I shot with the Aivascope. Filmed on a GH4 in 4k 4:3 for 2.35:1 Lens used - Aivascope and Olympus Zuiko 38mm f1.8 as taking lens. +1 diopter for a few close up shots. I use a lens hood to minimize flares. I shot at f/5.6 Quick coloring in Film Convert. Super harsh lighting but quick real world look. Flares would also be totally horizontal if I were on a tripod but it's mostly handheld.

    Stylized Grades?

I know most people enjoy more natural grades, but I thought it could be fun to see some stylized grades from different cameras. Here are two versions of a shot I did with the RX10ii in Cine2. The first version I did with FilmConvert... And this one I used Mojo ii. There's a little too much magenta in the sky, but I am having some problems with what I am seeing on my monitor in FCPX, compared to the exported version on my phone...

  11. Lovely!!! Some really stunning shots. I enjoyed it very very much. Music is great. I will watch it again on the my screen. Yeah... great lenses and another proof that the GH4 is a very good camera

  12. Japan and Germany are both top-teir manufacturing countries with the best and most advanced skills and factories. Even if it is thought of as a full frame Panasonic GH5 with Leica's ergonomic design and custom lens mount, that's fine by me. A lot of Leica's best lenses were made in Canada any way Noctilux among them.

  14. Big glass is better, 55mm is quite significant and slightly larger than Kowa B&H / 16H / 8Z / Elmoscope II. Those are sought after because of being short, with large diameter glass (which means you can go wider with your taking lens) and good image quality. However, if the price is much higher than those, you should give it some thought. Do you like/need the somewhat unusual stretch factor? How important is wide-angle? You're probably also paying for the rarity of it... About the size of the rear element of the Iscomorphot 16/2x...measured it, rear element is 'only' 32mm across (diameter of the back, including casing is 52mm, so be sure to check they did measure the glass only). Cheers, Tim.

  15. Alot of electronics is made in Germany. Just look at the iphone. Its designed in the US and assembled in china. But the majority of the iphones components and profit comes and goes from Germany, Japan and South Korea.

  16. Using an external recorder kills everything I like about the GH5. For the first time ever, I'm willing to trade dynamic-range for ergonomics. 400Mbp 4K ALL-I 10bit/200Mbps 1080P ALL-I 10bit will show this camera's true capability.

  18. Really beautiful dogs, good looking footage, not a fan of the song. I very much like the vintage look and grading. On their Vimeo page Tiffen has a number of videos showing what look their various filters give. I would consider adding a filter if you want to take away even more from the video look. The handheld nature of the video was not distracting at all. But the song was, at least to me. The footage had a vintage feel, but then you drop some autotuned contemporary pop song over it and it just didn't feel right. But that's just my opinion. Did I mention those are some beautiful dogs? I wouldn't stress too much over the lack of stabilization. Really pretty footage. It has a look that I like.

    5" monitor recommendations

Me too! Actually that is the only reason I haven't one yet, as I started a similar thread a few months ago, and noone has ever used this one! There are some youtube videos of the Ikan version, you can take a look there for starters. It is also touch screen!

  20. Besides Luke, the videos released thus far have been a let down. Regarding the few points above - I do not believe one requires a 10bit monitor to see the difference. I use 8bit monitors, and my Blackmagic Pocket, when shooting 10bit 1080P ProRes HQ, absolutely decimated my Sony A7S + Shogun 4K 8bit ProRes HQ. I would bring both files into Premiere, push the grade in Lumetri, and the Blackmagic 10bit 1080P ProRes HQ held up, the A7S 4K 8bit ProRes HQ did not - banding all over the place. When I shot for Blackmagic to promote their Micro camera, I found the results even better - the new colour-science and improved sensor/ASIC showed me even more how important 10bit is. You can tell a 10bit image virtually immediately - the colours are deep, rich, have fidelity, accuracy. 8bit images always come across very "thin" and crayon-like - especially the skin-tones. I am liking the 10bit I am seeing out of the GH5, however, I do not think its true potential will be realised until we see 10bit 400Mbps for 4K, and 10bit 200Mbps for 1080P. Agreed.

  21. All of the original m43 Speed Boosters were replaced by the Ultra model a couple of years ago. The OM version of the Ultra is a current product: http://www.metabones.com/products/details/MB_SPOM-m43-BM3

  22. Nice read! The Leica SL is one of the best designed 35mm bodies of all time (borrows a lot from the S System). I'm always torn about to buy or not to buy. However, I'm an Leica M user (and the M10 is just so damn sexy..... just waiting for the P version) and my second camera is the GH4 soon to be replaced by the GH5. But again the SL body is just brilliant and the crystal clear EVF is the best by lightyears. I also cannot understand the success of the Sony. Yes the sensors are great , but everything else form handling, usability and durability is.... plainly awful .... a 299,- of the shelf horror design. What definitely will be interesting is the next SL in about 2 years! That could be a killer if Leica gets their hands on the GH5 stuff. In the meantime we will see the next S, a major upgrade. B

  23. If you need premiere I would stick to a windows laptop because 1. You get better hardware for your money 2. Premiere works better under windows right now. XPS 15 9560 and Razer blade should be good, but take a look at the hp zbook studio G3 that is officially supported by Adobe: That being said, I edit 4k videos (with proxies) on a macbook 12 with FCPX

  24. Lot of wrong stuff in one single post. Leica Hater by the way? 1.) The viewfinder is 4.4MP with a 1280×1024 pixel resolution and the Panel is Epson. The optics, design etc. is by Leica. 2.) The lenses/optics are made and designed by Leica. Panasonic has made the design specifications in regards to Zoom Function and Video AF. That's why it's a joint venture. The whole AF System/ Motor and how the elements are moving is a Leica own design. 3) The video functions has been designed mainly by Panasonic and Leica bought also the Vlog knowledge - very similar to the GH4. This has first off all nothing to do with the Sensor. But its fun to read Leica bashing.... B

  25. Laowa is gonna be coming out with a 7.5mm lens for m43. Footage on YouTube. Also, Panasonic will be coming out with a 8mm-18mm f2.8-4. But it will be expensive, gonna have Leica branding. To go wider than 12mm right now there are the 2 Olympus zooms and a Panasonic zoom. The Samyang lens made for mirrorless and some other options which are a bit more niche. I'd wait for the Laowa. They said it will be competitively priced but who knows. You might want to look at the Sigma 30mm f1.4 instead of the 25mm f1.4. Adorama has the Sigma for $339 and the Panasonic for just under $600. I'd prefer the Sigma. Actually, I'd prefer the 20mm f1.7 to both of them as I prefer that focal length on m43 and you can get that used really cheap.

  29. Well the differences in that video are so subtle I can't even see any The colours coming off the sensor though look fantastic, a big improvement in skintones for Panasonic this time round Is that the 180fps at the end? they didn't bother to label it... If it is 180fps that looksimproved over the pre-production model footage I saw before... not a hint of moire and very nice detail But the 10bit needs some proper evaluation once this marketing bullshit period is over, me thinks

  30. Thanks for sharing. I liked the video quality and good stabilization of G85/14-140mm II. I liked the colors, sharpness and calm camera handling. Low light is quite good with f3.5. I have 14-140mm II/GH4 and the lens OIS is vibrating badly. Glad to know when I get GH5 I can use the 14-140mm with good quality. Can you remember what settings you used in this video? Profile, contrast, NR, sharpen, exposure mode, possible idynamic etc

  35. Doesn't that camera provide dual IS with image stabilized lenses? That might be a reason to get the kit lens, for stabilized handheld shots. A few of the Panasonic primes have stabilization. I know the 42.5mm f1.7 does. If it was me I'd rather use it with vintage glass or native m43 glass (where the lenses tend to be much smaller).

  36. The G85 is a great camera, but so is the Nikon. Some of my favorite work I've done has been with the D5500. So unless you need 4K or 5-axis IBIS, I would just keep the Nikon. But to answer your question, your Nikon lenses will work nicely with a focal reducer. You don't need the Metabones, but I would suggest at least springing for the Lens Turbo II. Good luck.

  37. Premiere Pro doesn't have the built-in color tools necessary for working in a log space. That's something I might be able to correct in the future. I know a lot of people use Premiere.

  38. I shot some high contrast scenes to test out what's the maximum dynamic range you can achieve without F-Log.

  39. It just occurred to me, with the ability to shoot 60 fps in 4K, would be too crazy to think about HDR video in 4k 30p? something like RED's HDRx.
