  1. It seemed like when Nikon released the D750 and D810 they were on a roll and then THUD rolled into a ditch. They have done nothing interesting for 3 years. And between the D5300 and D-whatever they are on now, also nothing interesting. GoPro rival was a joke... Released just as the action cam market was over the hill... Yet to give the whole show to it at Photokina last year smacks of management issues too. Nikon could have entered the cinema market, they have the optics, sensors, everything... They could have gone into high end mirrorless market, the brand is stronger than Sony. Didn't... didn't... didn't. They won't survive like this... They are taking zero risks.

  2. As someone who was a Nikon shooter for a LONG time and was looking forward to the 18-50 this is very disappointing.

  5. Whatever you decide, add a checksum of every file so you can verify if it's intact or not. And make multiple copies so you can find one copy of a file that is not corrupt. I have used this and like it. http://www.exactfile.com/ Good to have for files on computer too. It's good to know that your source material is still intact later in a project or after transfer.

  6. I'll give it a go... some people believe the image coming out of the GH4 has a video quality to it, whereas a camera from BlackMagic or other brand of "cinema" camera is more tuned to create a cinematic image. So if you believe this theory, and you're making narratives, a "proper" cinema camera could be a better choice.

  7. This is a shame. I was looking forward to the DL. I think Andrew is right, Nikon is missing too many opportunities. They could potentially be the next to go down after Pentax. The D500 and D5 are great cameras but for quite specialised audiences. Someone needs to open a new sensor design and manufacturing plant because I really think Sony has everyone by the balls making their sensors for them.

  8. Well I think the D500 is far and away the best Birder camera out there. And now with price drops are a no brainer to buy. Other than maybe the Olympus EM1 mkII nothing close to it.

  9. Nikons biggest problem I suspect is Canon. Like it or not but Canon easily outsells all the others. With old models. Panasony is bleading money in development without really taking of. Canon can take their sweet time and still stay in the green. Ironically Fuji is kept alive with film. And their Instax film division is currently the best selling cameras. Not best selling film cameras. But all together. Fuji Instax Film cameras outsell Canon. With lesser profit per unit of course. But still...

  10. FWIW, regarding the BMMCC/Metabones, I just set up a new rig with those. haven't shot enough with it but enough to really like it with the smallrig/ikan EVF setup we're using. Very affordable, really exceptional IQ, slow motion color science and dynamic range and the peaking is some of the best I've used. I shoot full frame Canon's as well, but I can tell this will be a go-to combo. Here's a quick first test of the slomo...nothing special. https://vimeo.com/202145227

  11. With the GH5 it isn't just the specs, the whole package is much easier to use than a Sony or Canon 6D. Way better ergonomics for video than the Canon. Way better interface and button layout than the Sony, as well as better screen visibility in bright sunlight. The A6500 still has the rolling shutter problems of the A6300, whereas the GH5 has this truly sorted. It's well worth the extra $600 but if you think it is over-specced, you can save money by selling your 6D (which is absolutely crap for video quality) and getting a used Sony A7S instead. It may not have the 10bit, 4K, logical menus, etc. or refined ergonomics of the GH5 but it's only about $200 more than what you can sell your 6D for. Unless you need the 6D for stills (fast AF), get rid.

  12. D750 in 1080/60p is sharper than the A7S in full frame 60p mode. But APS-C mode A7S gives better 1080/60p than almost anything else for the money and you have way more choice of lenses on E-mount than Nikon F-mount. Sadly no Speed Booster Not sure what happened to the custom one on this forum. So this is $999 used... anything cheaper? Cheapest would be a used Panasonic G6... 1.3x crop with Speed Booster and Canon lenses, so nearly full frame. Check out the quality of 1080/60p on the Fuji XT-20 though... and you can put a Nikon mount Speed Booster on it, but not Canon. How about forgetting about 60p altogether and going for a nice 120p RX100 IV if it is slow-mo you're looking for?

    Samsung NX Speed Booster

I have been working with a digital logic analyzer and an Arduino nano. Via this setup I can set the aperture and move the focus to min and max so far. So the setup is For gathering data: Canon Camera + EF extension tube with AF contacts + lens, I have wired the extension tube to sample the data via a USB digital logic anlyzer. For testing my control: Arduino Nano + EF extension tube with AF contacts + lens (no body for now). So the aperture and focus max and min are working as controlled by the nano. Next step: NX camera + NX extension tube with AF contacts + Arduino Nano and use the digital logic analyzer to find the focus commands from the camera, also spoof the lens data. Here is where ihkim's work will be a big help with the lens initialisation, to hopefully successfully spoof the lens in a way the camera accepts. Final case: NX camera signal to contacts on close end EF -> NX adapter, these wired to the nano, then from the nano to the contacts on the other side of the adapter, then to the lens. Then replace the adapter with wired NX-L for focal reduction. Stabilization seems to work automatically for the lenses I've tried, but I think the EF-M mount lenses don't have physical switches, but these are not among the lenses we're adapting. My 10k offer still stands for anyone that can provide native-like camera driven AF. The Apurture DEC does not do this, as I understand it doesn't listen to the camera half at all, in which case I'm only a few buttons away from doing the same with the nano (add button to repeat change focus command one way, another the other way, same for aperture). Wifi would be a bunch of work though, but while nice it isn't on my own wish list. The nano will allow more programmatic control, 2,3,4, etc... focus locations could be toggled, it's mostly a matter of adding physical inputs and writing logic into the nano code to handle them. As I look back to your image of the upcoming system, the contacts are going to go just from the Apurture to the lens, I also need to get to the camera contacts somehow. What I need is camera -> Apurture and Apurture -> lens (but with my nano instead of the Apurture). With the current NX-L design I'm not sure how to get at the camera contacts, running wires even with a hole drilled through isn't great because of the rotating design, so they can be stressed or break if it rotates too far. Solutions that come to mind would complicate the design quite a bit further (e.g. concentric rings for each contact on that part that rotates). That would be great, can you PM me the address, I didn't keep the packaging they arrived in so I lost the return address.

    SLR Magic 1.33x-40

They mention it being used with full frame in their B & H listing. "Please note that SLR Magic cautions that for full frame work a 75mm taking lens is required, a 50mm taking lens may only cover when your camera is in APS-C or S35/APS-C sensor mode. When using this adapter on a 25mm , the image will cover a Four Thirds sensor."

  15. The 1080p 120fps is nearly as detailed as the A7S at 24p. Better than the D750.

  19. The m4/3 might be doing ok but its still nothing compared to Canon. And Fuji is eating away at their fan base every day. But I do think Panasonic is in more trouble than Olympus. I don't know any Panasonic still shooters. And that's where the real money still is, not in video. But there is currently way to many options compared to people buying cameras. Someone's gotta go.

  21. I do big prints of my photos. High end ink printer + fine art archival paper and they will last if you keep them at home in normal conditions. UV light is cut out by windows at home. Having gigabytes of photos is a big no-no for me, though. Quality over quantity.

  22. Interesting read, thank you! As some might know I also have a love/hate relationship with the Voigts. Sold and rebought it twice. The image is awesome, but there are just times when you need AF - especially when things are going fast.

  23. I heard about it, didn't know was so remote! I live in the exact opossite of Europe, Greece. On the NX1 sub forum there is @ricardo_sousa11, I believe he is from Portugal, maybe he can help with local shops and prices, here the a6500 is very expensive, and I have used a6300 as a B or C cam a few times and I ain't a big fun, but for your limited use it can be alright. NX1+S lens = 650 + 650 = 1300€, if the combo is in a great condition, and if you can lower the price a bit more (or offers more than one battery, extrnal charger, any extras, etc), then I believe it is a super opportunity to have a top combo for almost the lowest price available. People are looking for "body only" prices, but an APS-C standard zoom with 2f - 2.8f of such a quality is a unique advantage through all systems. Problem is that after that, you are going nowhere, this is the top body NX has to offer, and it lacks IBIS (can overcome and have better stabilization with a Crane gimbal) and the 10bit the GH5 will offer in a few months.

  24. Honestly give me a D750 with the same DR/color in 4K 10-bit and I will buy one immediately. I still to this day go back and forth on buying a D750 again, but I hold out hope it's successor will have 4K. I wanted these compacts, badly.

  25. nagual, Tiffen has some very informative vids showing tests with their filters. You might want to consider getting one if you want to cut down on the sharp video look. Also, you might want to look into the Veydra lenses. If it was me, I'd get the 17.5 and 42.5 Voigtlander. But you'll miss out on autofocus and these lenses are much heavier than the Panasonic/Olympus offerings.

  26. All of this NX1 talk is kinda pointless because the OP has an a6300... and in his opinion he likes it better.

  27. Yup, the D500 was listed, by multiple review sites, as the best camera of 2016. As a video camera, there are better choices, but every video I have seen from it looks pretty damn good... if only it had focus peaking and a smaller 4K crop.

  29. Actually noticed I got mixed up with the 8Z, I actually meant the B&H as the screw on adapter best suited to accompany the 16H. With so many models and variations it's easy to get confused about which is which lol! As for the 16H look compared to other Kowas, it should be very similar, as was said it's really just the element size and adaptability for APSC and full frame, they all work but some better than others, hence the bigger 16H, 8Z, and B&H being so sought after. Another correction, the 16H doesn't have orange flares, I misspoke, it flares blue as well but it's a warmer less blue color that mixes with the source light more than the SLR Magic which tends towards blue colored flares much of the time. It's different looks and depends on what you're after and what you like.

  30. Well as of now nothing else has a chance to survive nearly as long as a Blu-Ray can. Now will there be a Blu-Ray player to play it, good question. But 30, 40 years is really not that long. Well in reality half a persons life almost but.. I sure would not trust any of these modern day printers to have prints survive that long even though they blow about 100 year inks. Yeah maybe if they never see the light of day! Lucky to last 5 years if the sun is on them. I lived in Florida for years and prints don't last for crap down there. Heat, humidity, and sun not good for print media. Trouble is now technology moves so fast God only knows what we will have 5 years from now, let alone 40 years from now. We probably can't begin to imagine. I would imagine a photo album will last 40 years. They are almost always closed. I would imagine a SD card will last that long. As to a player for it ??? I am sure both will be good for a laugh from your kids 40 years from now! The way fashion goes they might be wearing the same outfits we are wearing now.

  31. My favorite m4/3 prime is easily the Olympus 17mm f1.8. Razor sharp, quick AF, real manual focus with stops and a scale. Nice size as well.

  32. To be honest, I'd say 1 out of 2 ain't all that hard these days. Even the laziest SOB can throw one of these new cameras/lenses into auto, dial up a flattering color profile, and shoot clean motion pictures that look technically impressive. Artistically impressive? Probably not. But technically impressive? Yeah, no problem. The other stuff? You're right, not so much.

  33. Thanks @Andrew Reid your advice is appreciated Most of what you and others had mentioned i'd already learnt from regularly reading your posts and forum members feedback from the forums over this last year or so, i've learnt so much in a short space of time and it's been invaluable really. Gonna stick with my plan, save up the pennies and run with the Sony A7s in crop mode and eventually get a speedbooster when the budget allows. Haha you are like the 'Annoying Orange' mate! I'l be sure to be extra specific next time, keep the peace yeww Thanks

  35. That's what I did for the DS1. The branded batteries came in a good 5mm short of the Chinese made '18650' batteries that came with the unit. So I would advise caution when buying any extras ahead of getting exact specifications and measurements for anything that comes from tiny Chinese factories.

  36. Amen to that! A little fishy this late in the game to me. There is no real tests to amount to crap. You have to figure the Olympus EM1 mkII has been out for what 2 months, and we don't have a GH5 focus test to save our ass, let alone any thing else to amount to write home to mother about but specs on paper. Seems like this may be the best video camera ever made LoL, or it will be firmware hell for 6 months or more.

  37. The Phantom series are extremely easy to fly, the P4 and mavic are even more dumb proof with the anti-collision sensors. But at some point you must do the bare minimum, read the manual, watch 30 min of tutorial and train step by step for 2 days. If this is too much for you, stick to your camera and don't ever use a drone. As for the video above with the two idiots from Finland I don t even know where to start: they don't install the prop correctly so of course the thing flip and crash upon take off. They don't remove the gimbal lock... they ignore all the battery warnings and try to fly too far. I mean what do you expect ? The drone is not the problem here.

  38. Well it wasn't the fault of 8bit that V-LOG was noisy on the GH4. Canon LOG in 8bit on the 1D C is clean as a whistle. The GH5 should be a lot less noisy, it's a new sensor and seemingly a very advanced one. I'd shoot it in 10bit, but it should stand up just fine in 8bit as well for 4K 60p. But we don't know for sure yet as initial testers have been putting uninformative sales pitches out there instead of proper tests.

  40. This has happened to me when I am not balanced properly. I think the motors have too much trouble. Are you sure that you are balanced right? I am planning to do a quick tut on how I pack my bag and grab it quickly. I use the Dakine Sequence bag. It was on sale last month for $80 off and it has a side pouch where you can put it temporarily. Hopefully I will get to all of these tutorials before i head out the door on the next shoot.

  43. I hate to be "the NX1 guy" in this thread ha (I'm actually suprised none of the usual suspects have piped up yet)... But it might be worth looking into the NX1, or the even cheaper NX500 for that matter, both produce lovely, sharp 60p (and gorgeous 120p as well!) with minimal moire/aliasing, crazy low rolling shutter, and decent enough lowlight performance with a fast lens, which you're obviously interested in, i.e. shallow dof, or you wouldn't care so much about sensor size. I have no idea what they'd go for down under, but there are lots of gently used ones around for pennies. Our very own forum member Lucabutera is selling some awesome NX-L speedboosters that he has crafted as well, I have one, which gives the camera about a 1.1x crop. Seems like it'd fit your parameters pretty spectacularly. Best of luck!

  45. Even if you could get H265 4k video into Resolve, I doubt it would play smooth. That codec is really demanding on a cpu in playback... And could you imagine after you graded it? I use Resolve(the FREE version) as part of my work flow after trans-coding it to DNxHR HQ. Aside from chomping up hard-drive space it works fine. I'd recommend using that money to get a good toaster (External USB 3.0 HDD dock) and some extra drives rather than a Resolve dongle. H265 is great to shoot 4K onto your SD Card in a compact fashion, however once get back to your computer you'll want to convert it to an edit friendly codec as fast as you can.

  46. Ppl don't like those taking about nx1. They usually prefer ignoring its existence, and dismissing it as a discontinued camera, as if being discontinued could kill the existing units.
    1 point
  47. Hate to bring it back, but NX1 has a perfect touch screen implementation since a long time ago, just found in Philip Bloom's AF megathon as the third technology, just after Canon's Dual Pixel and a6300 and I have one year more warranty in my camera, and 20 months for my 16-50 2-28f lens, and the whole kit costed me 1500€. It is not like it is a mythic/cryptic creature of the old times to just ignore it in every sentence. I expect the next Fuji to have touch screen, and work better than Sony (which barely works anyway, also battery consumption, heat management were handled better by Fuji, even if you have to add 300-400€ for the grip and batteries), but let's face it, there is a camera that does most things right, RIGHT NOW (and for 2 years now) and some of us earn our bread from that! Just for your information, I go now!

  49. Devon/Andy could you show us some samples with those lenses? :) Btw Andy I really suggest you take a look at that Sigma. At 18mm wide open, you still get good background separation and combined with the angle of view you get an almost out-of-this-world kind of look. Just buy the camera that works well for you and learn to get the best image out of it.
