  2. They fucked up because Canon fails to understand that entry to medium range ($1000-$3000) camera with good video capabilities would generate some substantial sales and there is definitely a market segment here (eg GH4). Even if this "video DSLR" market segment represents 3-5%; Is the Camera industry doing so well that they can ignore it ? They fucked up because now this market segment is being taken by Panasonic and Sony and people who make the switch are not going to come back. They fucked up because some conservative executives in Japan think that delivering decent video feature in DSLR/Miroless body would hurt their pro-cinema line when actually the pro do need a real pro camera with built in ND, XLR and all the pro cam features. They fucked up to comprehend that the amateurs or video enthusiasts like me can't spend the money they don't have for an expensive Pro camera and even if I had the money I need something small capable of doing video and stills (plus having a nice full frame sensor and not S35). It has nothing to do with cannibalization, Sony does have A7 and FS line and they do just fine because they know it's two different market. Bottom line is that I laugh at the 5D4, I pre-order the GH5 and I'm not spending a dime anymore on Canon gears. I may not be the typical core market guy for Canon but is the camera industry doing so well than they can ignore the 3-5% video/stills folks and laugh at the face of customers who invested a lot $$$ over the years ?

  3. Agreed. I hope they do implement each and every item we mentioned. That camera would be the Holy Grail for many of us. Well, at least until the next Holy Grail. Right now, I am looking forward to using the GH5 on my next feature, and honestly, I will be content for quite some time. Keeping up with the Cinematic Joneses is both expensive and time consuming. I get more accomplished when I am not researching the next big thing.

  6. Ah yes, 42.5mm! The repair guy did the same type of subjective test initially. If it wasn't for your assurance that it wasn't normal, I might still have the blurry center. Thanks!

Also oly 12-40mm @ 12mm is a bit wider than 12-60 @ 12

  10. That's exactly right, it's not just about me as a customer, it's about the millions of others who check this blog every year and want to get advice on what cameras shoot good video. Canon ignore them at their peril. Interest in DSLR and mirrorless video is not small. 4.6 million session on EOSHD last year from 1.7 million unique users.

  11. The first actually useful GH5 review I've read comes from Amadeusz at the excellent Polish website VideoDSLR.pl (Google Translated here) He look at all aspects of the new camera in detail, including the quality of the promising 180fps slow-mo mode. Read the full blog post

  13. I applaud new tech and implementation, surely anything that helps is welcome. The more the merrier, right? Else we might as well stick to shooting with the T2i/550D. What I wouldn't quite say is that monitors are just about only good for quick glance framing and what not, just not for focus, because 'with 1080p or actually even 4K signals, you can't judge focus and that they're totally unusable'? But I didn't really have a problem pulling focus from the screen with the GH2 (crop sensor, not 4K) and say for example the vintage Pentax-M SMC Asahi 50mm f/1.4 back in the day to be honest. I even think the f/1.4 helps, as you can more clearly tell what is out of focus in front and behind. But you know, that's just silly old me and people do tend to call me 'eagle eyes' every now and again. I have 2x 5" and one 7" monitors, either of 'em only take 1080p input and I think it works fine for telling focus and sure, of course there's nothing wrong with focus aids either. But to say that all these monitors are pretty much unusable, I find quite the interesting statement, as Kisaha mentioned, there were times when that was all we did, pulling focus from what we see on the screen, making them usable apparently. And now they're suddenly not anymore, although it's only gotten better since? But you know. Agree to disagree then. I won't deny that it's nice to have extra aids as well on these cameras and monitors or that you shouldn't use them, so I guess that's an area we can agree on. It's the philosophy 'most use of equipment', in other words: 'if you have it, why not use it?'. Like cruise control in a car. I just wouldn't go as far as saying without going there it's useless.

  14. Add to the things that Sony would also need to include to be competitive with the GH5 are much improved color 'science', EVFs that don't dim when shooting 4K, LCD screens that swing out & pivot, and an IBIS that's actually effective. Their current iteration is really poor.

  15. I had the chance to use the GH5 too, here in India. It does have a much better designed menu and a few really interesting features. Unfortunately most people don't know enough about Panasonic Cameras in India, and the company doesn't seem to care about thier camera division. They would rather concentrate on the TVs and Air Conditioners.

  20. ??? I am using a G7 now and A6500. I mentioned those 5D3 and D750 cameras because you cannot rack focus accurately using a monitor as the focus tool with them. I am currently shooting without using a monitor, so I guess I am "unable to work without a monitor" - you're right! All I said was you cannot rack focus using shallow DOF on 1080p signal. All of a sudden you show up lambasting anyone who dares mention it like some kind of personal insult... I must be some kind of idiot for pointing that out, sorry. Obviously I am "unable to work with what reality offers me" even though I am shooting regularly with aforementioned cameras. I guess they are not real cameras and they don't count since they are a "joke". I just showed up to suggest some feedback on affordable 7'' monitors and suggested looking at the 4K input because 1080p signals are hard to focus with. Now I am an idiot that can only shoot with future technology and don't know how to use my gear???

  21. Yep I did, Mk2 was great because of having this video capability and the 3 too for Magic Lantern. They had the potential to become leader not only in DSLR photography but also dslr and mirorless video. They fucked it up. A Mk4 with proper video specs (at least A7r2 specs) would have been great. A Canon mirorless with those specs would have been amazing (adding better lenses, ergonomics, menus, colors to the A7r2 basically) and a Canon FF mirorless with exact GH5 specs would be the last and only camera I need for years not gonna happen.

  22. At that price point it is almost guaranteed that it is a rebranded Chinese monitor. I've read people commenting it is a rebranded Feelworld / Seetec F7. Not sure though. From the other hand, almost all companies have their production in China, Taiwan or Korea. So what is the actual difference between 'well known' companies and Chinese ones? It's everything, but the product itself.

  24. Yeah I have to give it to Panasonic with the GH- series, they have really pushed the body space to the max with what you need and nothing else. Their touchscreen, AF system, battery size, articulating LCD you name it has been in response to the customer, not some silly bastard that has never used a camera sitting behind a desk. I just bought a new, yes new, still in the original box Panasonic AG-AF100AP video camera. It is laid out beautifully. It has, in a few test I have done, a hell of a Cine, Film look to it for the money you can buy one that is crazy to pass up. If I can't make a decent looking video with this camera I need to give it up. Is it a Arri, well hell no LoL. but I will give Panasonic credit, they have all along, tried to help out the little guy more than any company along with BlackMagic trying also that I know of video wise.. We need to give them credit for that.

  25. Yeah I agree Fuji is sort of drinking the Leica Koolaide as of late. They make some good stuff, but cult like stuff, well I think not to justify the price. China is going to hand their ass to them you watch. I have never had a desire to buy any of their cameras, even film days ago. Do they make good stuff , well yeah, is it that much better, well not enough to take my money that I have ever seen.

  26. Quit posting this stuff. Now I guess we all have to go out and buy a damn BMPCC because you came up with this beautiful video! You are costing us much grief. Quit reminding me why I need my ass beat for selling mine, maybe others do also.. Oh and by the way well done. Looks like we all know what it Can look like, and you made it even better. Thank you I guess?

  27. Yeah I don't really want to see Canon , Nikon or anyone go out of business. Competition is great for all of us, and there are real people working at them that will lose their jobs. Just listen to the people that buy your stuff that have paid thousands of dollars, not a bunch of 12 year old Japanese, giggling girls who want Pink F-ing cameras! Quit protecting your top end stuff or you WILL be making nothing, I mean nothing but Pink cameras. All 250 of them! Well I have to add this to this conversation to make it a little upbeat. Hell maybe even shot on a Canon camera. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/capital-weather-gang/wp/2017/03/16/watch-this-amtrak-train-blast-passengers-with-a-wall-of-snow/?tid=hybrid_experimentrandom_1_na&utm_term=.87ca5b6a6e6f

  29. Not to nitpick or derail the thread, but there's much better options than the Z96s now. I had three and sold them off a couple months ago. I went cheap and scored a couple "Pico 228" lights off eBay for $20 each. Much brighter than the Z96s, adjustable color temp, and they stack up much nicer/flatter in my gear bag. I would recommend watching Caleb Pike's recent LED shootouts on Youtube, lots of great options covered there.

  30. You can "pull focus on a 3'' monitor with 480p resolution" on full frame with F1.4 or hell even F2.8? I ran around trying to do that with my 5D3 and D750. So many shots out of focus when rack focusing. If you are talking about punching in to check focus then that's a completely different discussion, but please show us this magic of sharp 4K rack focus using 480p monitor and shallow DOF using monitor only run and gun... even if you can do it can everyone else? I don't really use external monitors right now, and because of that I don't do rack focus and I have to punch in to check critical focus.

  32. Well Canon is Canon. Probably the most Bull Headed company that makes Cameras, Lenses. They are like a Aircraft Carrier, they have deadly stuff that can kill anyone, but god help you if you need to turn the damn ship left or right! They really act like people will buy their stuff no matter how outdated it is anymore, or crippled. Well I hate to tell them they have to change or their camera business or it is done, just like Nikon on the edge of going out of business.. Even Canon's printer business is going to go away, who the hell prints anymore? They have had a serious run of good fortune in the past, but they need to wake up and not cripple the shit out of their lower end stuff, because other company's are going to hand their ass to them. They have the talent, skill to make about anything happen, but they seem to be in the slow lane on making that happen in this day and age. Pick up the Pace Canon! Oh and listen to Andrew, he has sort of following of people that sort of have a clue about Video stuff.

  34. 4k makes a big difference if you are focusing. I would say most cameras 1080p outout to monitors are unusable for focusing. Think of the mushy 1080p from 95% of cameras - that is what you will see. But when you use 4k signal it is so much clearer! Almost useable with 7 inch monitor with full HD resolution but for critical focus still need to zoom in. When I plugged a6500 into my monitor for the first time I was wondering how my monitor got so much better!!!

Yeah this is an unfortunate association. Even my initial gut reaction to HDR video made me immediately think of those terrible "HDR" photoshops.

  36. @Davey Davey, I work intensively with Panas for documentary and interview...I know and tested the Pana focusing system extensively and it is by far the worst when comparing with Sony A6x00, Canon DPAF and Fuji X-T2. Contrast AF + DFD CAN NOT compete with phase detection + contrast detection or DPAF. I worked with several Panas and dived very deep in testing different AF modes, but...It's somehow usable in some scenarios after tweaking, but far away from a reliable method to seriously work with. Very good for wide shots and subjects moving from side to side. BUT a desaster when facing unpredictable back and forth moving of subjects. OK, when stepping aperture down, it could work, but with fast lenses and shallow DOF it's a mess... At the end of the day, this AF flaw will NOT be such important for many shooters used to focus manually, but for ENG style and Run & Gun for one man bands (journalists, etc.) it will be not first choice for moving objects and shallow DOF....Thouigh we should consider, that this camera has enough strengths... ;-) @jonpais My FZ1000 doen't hunt on the background back and forth when using "focus area". So move the focus area on the place you want it to be during self filming (middle. left, right, etc.), increase the size of your green focus square to the maximum possible and half push the focus button. Then start filming... This method works for me and my FZ1000 (eg during interview situations, when I am completely alone and I can not stay behind the camera but have to discuss with my interview partner), even the background should be very contrasty. I use to lighten my subject (even during daylight), so since using this method, I never had any problems with hunting forth and back)....

  37. I think this video is for stabilization comparison, not for skin tones. The scene has very difficult lights, yellow low sun and sky blue everywhere in snow and shadows. What is right or good skin tone in the first place? People generally has very different skin colors. This GH5 video shows quite low dynamic range but it is maybe poor due to settings.

  38. @wolf33d so your sweet spot is everything (whatever), as 98%-99% of the camera systems out there are FF, or m43, or APSC! My sweet spot is APS-C, plain and simple. Thin slice depth of filed with 1.8f lenses (which I really don't) - up to 28megapixels for crop purposes, close to cinema S35 for video. If I can get an ok video performance out of medium format, that would be really interesting. Of, course people can have different "sweet spots", I know people having a sweet spot for both blonds and red hair girls. Everything is possible in this world!

  39. Ok, I bit the bullet and went for this one: https://nl.aliexpress.com/item/Seetec-F7-7-Inch-Utra-Slim-IPS-Full-HD-1920x1200-4K-HDMI-On-camera-Video-Field/32776738097.html After checking out the Feelworld FW-760, I discovered that there is a 'new' monitor from Feelworld, the F7. It has the exact same specs and I expect the exact same panel, just a more modern housing. Then I realised that Feelworld is a sub-brand of Seetec, which is the brand my current monitor is from. Googeling further, I found out that the F7 monitor is availble with both Feelworld and Seetec branding. Same difference. Went with the Seetec because it was a tad cheaper to send to my country. It should arrive in like 2 weeks so I will let you know once I've messed around with it. I expect it to be similar to the FW-760, just with a more modern look. Someone also said on YouTube that this F7 is the same monitor as the Cinemartin Loyal LT and just a rebrand. Probably true but that's not confirmed. Thanks for the help everyone. Happy shooting.
