  1. Dear Luca, I’ve received the parcel. NXL-0055 is awesome. Incredible conversion factor on top of super optics. It looks like NXL-Optics is better than Metabone Speed Boosters)) I tried many original Metabones when i was m43 user, but finally quit from them. I have two manual Samyang lenses: 24mm/1.4 and 16mm/2.0 Both get a new live with NXL… 16mm/2.0 becomes close to 11mm)) Well done, Man! Keep Going.

  2. Nice all around camera. Can be cinematic with the right lens (e.g Voigtlander F.95), filter (ProMist or similar), 24p, and log to protect highlights (+grading. Lighting is important though cinéma vérité can work too). This is a no excuse camera, now anyone can make a blockbuster . @Orangenz are you waiting for Peter Jackson to get his so you can combine cameras for District Kong Hobbit IX 3D? If you shoot it Birdman style in one take then throw on a LUT, you'd be done in about two hours!

  6. 12.8 stops for the GH4 is for stills in RAW at ISO 100 only. It drops away quite quickly as you go up the ISO range (as most cameras do). I think we worry about DR headline numbers too much. As long as there is enough is all that really matters (unless you are shooting a Hollywood feature film maybe).

    What am I Doing Wrong?

Export a master file from FCPX (best quality) and then upload that straight to YouTube. Cut the MPEG Streamclip out of the equation and see what happens.

  9. So potential 5D customers that are more interested in video now matter all of a sudden, maybe the sales are not going so good with the stills crowd. It seems to me that Canon relies to much on fanboyism, like old wars Canon vs Nikon, but in my opinion new generations have much less brand loyalty. For me, best example of this was NX1, yes maybe Samsung didn't sell enough units to stay in business, but just look how many forum members here own them and do some great work. All those guys weren't afraid to switch to a new player in camera business because they knew they are getting a very capable camera for a good price, and it can serve them well for a few more years without a problem. Now there is Fuji XT2 that shoots 4K video and probably has even better colors (IMO) than Canon straight out of camera, and with those great picture profiles you even have the option to create different moods in camera without much grading, for a fast turnaround. And also lets not forget best looking JPEG stills straight out of camera in the business. On the stills side of things, lets say I want to buy FF DSLR in that price range, why would I go for 5D IV, when there is Nikon D810 with still better DR, more than enough resolution and lower price point. Also, switching glass is easier than ever these days when you have all those Sigmas now that are even better in some cases than their Canikon counterparts, but are much more affordable. I really hope that they are feeling the breath of competitors down their neck, because who wouldn't go back to Canon if they do things right for us video guys in the future.

  10. Twice the cost, but the 128GB is a better idea for those future codecs. How fast is the sustained write on these? https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1090745-REG/lexar_lsd128crbna10002_pro_1000x_uhs_2.html In other news, the vlog activation works fine.

  11. Personally I'd advise you to get a Nikon for natural colors. More natural than Canon in fact, they exaggerate the warmth a slight bit. Other than that, for something like family movies I'd probably go with the GX80/85 with stabilisation. Gives life to the shots if you shoot family handheld, and the stabilisation really helps.

C-LOG coming to 5D mk IV

True CLog uses a log gamma curve using low-level camera data so maximum dynamic range and highlights can be preserved. A picture profile doesn't have access to the low-level data, so true log is not possible, and thus there is no actual increase in dynamic range. Boosting the shadows with the gamma curve in a picture profile can do bad things to skintones, which shouldn't happen with true CLog. A log-like picture profile might be helpful in high dynamic range shots such as outdoors by boosting the shadows before compression and Highlight Tone Priority to help with the highlights. Would test skintones in this case before an important shoot.

    ON THE STREETS OF TOKYO

I was in Tokyo earlier in the year and I shot this over an afternoon. Most of it was shot on a D500 with the Sigma 17-50 f2.8, the bike shots were on a GoPro Hero 3 Black, and I recorded the interview on a Rode Lav hooked up to a Zoom H1. Amazingly the bike audio was all off the GoPro -- I'd recorded some engine sounds on the H1 as well but the GoPro sounded great so I saved myself the hassle of synching audio. Edited and Graded in Premiere Pro with the Impulz Kodak Ultramax LUT (which was great because they had a LUT made for Nikons AND GoPros) and I used their 2.5K Grain track as well. Overall it turned out pretty well. If I had more time I might've found a better way to grip the GoPro to try and dial out the camera shake, but I wanted it to look rough anyway and I grew to like it. I'm constantly surprised by how well GoPro footage can look if you use it in the right way. Kinda wished I'd had the Hero 5 with the Karma grip, might've been able to do some faux drone shots by putting the whole gimbal on a stick and holding it from the back of the bike as we went along. Hope you enjoy the film, love to hear your thoughts! ---- What drives you to do what you do? With SEVEN ESCOBAR Direction/DOP/Sound/Edit/Grade JOHN KUNG

  16. Panasonic GX85 or G85. Nice to have the IBIS. If you really want to stay cheap, pick up used old glass and a dumb M43 adapter. If you want better low light capability, you can get an inexpensive chinese speedbooster with a fast old prime.

  17. Very easy in that rare case where it's relevant, to diminish the DR of the scene, using a couple of lights...as it is 11 to 12 stops are quite respectable Actually if you were shooting a Hollywood feature film the DR would be more than adequate, as you would have lights and Grips and Gaffers...but they would also insist that you shoot on an Alexa! ...and I agree with you about DR...
    1 point
  18. Very true, but I would sure like the option of being able to control it IF I don't want it, and on interviews you are right, it can be a Big distraction.
    1 point
  19. Ahh that sounds more realistic. You have to have a Arri or Red to get UP there DR wise in Video. And even Arri does some double sampling voodoo stuff to make it happen.

  20. Wow that would damn near be BMPCC range. Hmm, that would be cool if it were. But I find that a bit hard to believe. My Af100A is really only 10.1 to maybe 10.5 stops. That would be a Big improvement in a pretty short time, new sensor or not.. But I guess we will find out soon enough, be lots of tests checking it.

    What am I Doing Wrong?

Safari and Chrome display/render colours (particularly red) differently on the same displays for some reason. I also find there is a difference in overall exposure sometimes, or at least it appears that way due possibly to what happens to particular dominant colours.

  25. Yeah, the dreaded Rolling Shutter thingy. You know, other than us and others like us, I doubt "Normal People" would never even notice it. Yeah those new GoPro HERO Sessions are the cats ass to have. Crazy good even under water. I sure as heck don't want to see them go Bankrupt.

The 4K Fuji X-T2 is here

It does make a hissing noise. But compared to the 50-140 its negligible. If you pine for the sound of the ocean then the 50-140 is in this sort of territory.

  30. I have the mc-11, SB ultra IV, sigma 18-35, 50-100 and a6500. Performance in movie mode is unacceptable for af-c. Also even though you can see the mc-11 18-35 combo work on YouTube, what they don't show is that the AF motor is constantly chugging even if everything is static. The SB combo is slightly better in that eventually the AF motor chugs less but it is still working almost all the time. I don't think the AF motors were designed for this and Im not willing to tempt fate and burn out the AF motors. Imo the only option that works well are native e mount lenses for af-c in movie mode. Even on the sony 18-105 the AF motor (very quiet, I have to put my ear right next to it) sounds like it is also always on but doesn't make any weird noises so I assume it is designed for af-c mode. Had I known about the AF motors constantly chugging and hunting on adapted lenses I would probably not have bought all this stuff and waited for a different option. For af-c I just stick to the Sony 10-18 and 18-105. Otherwise it's manual focus for me. My guess is that they should somehow change the adapters to read an average step direction over time for the AF motors instead of constantly moving back and forth even in static scenes. But I assume it's more complex than that to reverse engineer it. Also my canon 70-200 f2.8 and f4 don't seem to like the adapted combo very well and don't focus over half the time. I think the f4 is even worse since it's older and doesn't even focus in photo mode. I haven't used it in a while so I forgot exactly what issues these combos have.

  31. Jon, I wouldn't be concerned about facial detail on the GH5. I've seen plenty of those posted already. I'm not sure what they did in that video that was posted of the couple, but it's obvious something deliberate was done to smear much of the texture. I think we need to take all the posted videos as an 'average'. Dwelling on any one video is bound to bring us to some erroneous conclusions. BTW, who is that amazingly good looking guy in the top shot above?

The 4K Fuji X-T2 is here

This is part of a ten shot burst of an erratic fast moving subject at ISO5000, all of which were in focus. It acquires fast and tracks well. At least the 50-140 f2.8 which this was shot on does.

  33. Indeed. Seems to be still unavailable in Switzerland. Would have gone and bought one today to use on this weekend on a city trip (leaving tomorrow morning), now I'll wait and see the independent user reviews first. Germany is available, when I checked earlier there was even two kits left on Amazon Germany.

  35. I highly doubt it. I think they're going to be releasing an update to the GX8, but there is no guarantee it will even have a headphone jack. I'm guessing it will be aimed towards photographers. Please correct me if I'm wrong but no other Panasonic camera except the GH-line has ever had as high frame rates, bigger batteries, headphone jack, v-log L etc. Ergonomics is subjective, but I prefer the GH-line and GX8 over the smaller G85 and GX85. The GH5 is meant to last for 3 years, why would they release a cheaper similar camera to compete with it? Maybe in a year or two we will see 4K 60p in a cheaper Panasonic camera.

  37. hi guys, thanks for viewing the film. I don't use special settings. I prefer to use normal gamma with same old richardo's settings for a flat outcome image and i try as much as i can to expose to the right, preventing highlights from over-exposure. In post i usually tweak the contrast and exposure depending on the look i want to achieve. MOre or less this is my workflow. I am using an ND filter as i am shooting in the bright sun and you need one to get the shutter right. So i am using a variable ND filter, don't no the brand exactely. Cheers.

Letting you know: https://www.foto-mundus.de/aktionen/panasonic-gx800-gh5/23772/panasonic-lumix-dc-gh5-12-60mm-f3.5-5.6-asph.-power-o.i.s.?c=639 ('Sofort versandfertig' - 'Ready to ship'), seems they do have an international shipping policy: https://www.foto-mundus.de/versandkosten-bezahlmethoden . That said. Cyberport is reporting (still) that the expected stock status is 23.3 , so probably tomorrow we should see more widespread availlability. - Upd. And gone! But they still have a 14-140mm kit, which I was unaware of was a thing: https://www.foto-mundus.de/detail/index/sArticle/23773/sCategory/639

C-LOG coming to 5D mk IV

The C-log would be a welcomed improvement to the 5d mark iv imo. But it's not a deal breaker No disrespect to these user made log profiles. They are great but they just don't have the same kick as the C-log. An improvement on the crop however would be a big bonus. I think the log would be more appreciateon on the 1dx mark ii . The 1dc with a dpaf improvement would be my deal choice, however I believe they are done with the camera.

C-LOG coming to 5D mk IV

I created a Clog emulation in May 2016, right after purchasing the 1DX II. Along with Highlight Tone Priority (HTP) it appeared to be useful at first. However it became clear in production that skintones became challenging so I stopped using it (still use HTP). Actual Clog which isn't just a picture profile could be useful (highlights and preserving skintones), especially for matching other Canon cameras quickly. I was able to quickly grade GH5 log footage so a convergence on log formats that can be graded similarly is very helpful in production.

C-LOG coming to 5D mk IV

You have made a nice, flat profile.. A great starting point for grading... It is not log though and never will be... It cannot retain highlights and shadows like a true log file can.

  47. I can see this is pushing creative thinking to the brink. The fact is they are doing a lot of construction and planting to prepare for the summer or as a part of the planned expansion of the gardens, and there is an area I took both camera--and noticed the problem after that---but the LCD was covered with a viewfinder on both camera--I was shooting hand held, and I never bag the camera. What's more the sensor was covered by a speed booster the entire time--but the sensors seem fine--nice and clean, so it's not even a part of the equation. Really, there's nothing at all I did that is different from what I've done for years. It's frigging crazy! The white specks are odd shaped, randomly placed, and seem to be inside the LCDs---not on the outside surface like some kind of mold. The EVF shows the image perfectly---and as long as the video is not affected I'm content to live with it as long as it doesn't metastasize--but I sure would like to know how the hell this happened and what it actually is--and if anyone else has seen anything like it. I've owed a number of cameras and been shooting for quite a while, and I've never seen anything like this on one camera--let alone two of two different brands, which are both new---really new--- and well cared for. And besides, I always thought the LCDs were sealed. Right? PS: Love the a6500--would love it more in a better body with a larger battery. There was a smoking man I noticed hanging around the begonias.
