This is why I don't shoot v log , you get so tweeked up correcting it back to look just normal , them you apply the grade to get the look you want , now you are massively tweeked up , then just say you need to tweek a single colour on a door or wall and next you are now hugely massive tweeked up and you start to break up the image codec ....so I shoot natural profile always , saturation -5 , contrast -5 , and it all works fine for me that way . I always try get it looking good in camera , don't crush the blacks , and I shoot Pannys warmer at 4000k not 3200k , that helps a lot on the skin tones5 points

Long time GH4 user here...I was GH5 hesitant at first...BUT I Gotta say, I have recently seen a few GH5 vids on vimeo and youtube that have blown me away. The GH5 Welder video for example the colors are just great, some of the best I have seen...many people in the comments too have stated that they cant believe this was done on a GH5, to me they are very Alexa like. Another I saw recently, just a sunset, no special postwork or anything, but I swear tho the colors ...I could never get those out of the GH4,and I am pretty proficient in Premiere and using Lumetri. There is something about the colors that is really special, not too over the top, but far more dimension than the GH4, and I have seen some pretty decent skin tones too. All in all this camera seems to be able to do me for several years,Just need to sell a few things, I cant wait to get one.3 points -

Exposing V Log on the GH5 should be a lot easier than on the GH4. It took me a while to nail the exposure, but i would first look at the exp meter and get it near 0. Block out any super highlighted areas with your finger and look at the meter again. The highlight rolloff is better in V Log than standard so you can expose a bit to the right to avoid shadow noise. Having a LUT preview for V Log in the GH5 is a huge help. You should be able to eyeball the exposure with no troubles.2 points -

Yeah it's only really about 1 stop behind a full frame camera, as long as you don't fuck up exposure. Although the A7S II is a bit more, 2-3 stops. I have no problem with what the GH5 is doing at ISO 6400 with the gain from the Speed Booster XL and a fast EF lens... I call that low light performance to compete with the 1D X Mark II ISO 12,800 & F1.4... The A7R II without speed booster in full frame isn't very nice even at ISO 1600. In crop mode a different matter and acceptable at ISO 12,800.2 points -
And in my 2 years of owning the GH4 I still can't get the colours I want. That screenshot is a complete opposite of good colour.2 points

GH5 files not playing
JazzBox reacted to thesoundone for a topic
Hi everyone, sincere apologies if this has already been posted. I'm on my phone and the search function doesn't seem to work.. Just got my GH5 today and I can't playback the footage in Quicktime or Davinci Resolve. I don't have another editing app on my home computer so can't be sure if the files playback in premiere or FCP. They seem to playback in apple motion. I have the camera set to 4k 10 bit 422. I can't seem to find much info online. Has anyone else experienced this? Any input from GH5 users would be welcome. AF system preference can be somewhat subjective depending on what/how you shoot. I use single point / back-button focus methods so the 5D3's joystick, wider AF point spread and it's much higher number of cross-type points (41 vs 15 on the D750) gives me a lower miss-focus rate. also love the quick toggle from single to continuous via DoF button. This specific configuration and shooting style gives me great confidence and results on stressful and unpredictable scenarios like weddings, kids, events etc.. One of the things I hate most about XT2 ergonomics is the 3-way AF mode front switch. I'm always fumbling around for it and ending up in the wrong mode. I'd rather just a 2-way switch and manual override on the lens like Canikon. YMMV.1 point

While they are not common, there ARE lenses that have a T stop the same as the F stop. When used on a FF A7 series camera, the really nice little Sony Zeiss 55 1.8 has a T stop of 1.8 (with a bit more vignetting than the two M4/3 25mm lenses wide open). When used on a APSC camera, it has a T stop of 2 for some reason (I had it in my head it would be the other way around) but now vignetting has more than halved. https://www.dxomark.com/Lenses/Compare/Side-by-side/Sony-FE-Carl-Zeiss-Sonnar-T-STAR-55mm-F18-on-Sony-A7R-II-versus-Olympus-MZUIKO-DIGITAL-ED-25mm-F12-PRO-on-Olympus-OM-D-E-M1-Mark-II-versus-Panasonic-Leica-Summilux-DG-25mm-F14-on-Olympus-OM-D-E-M1-Mark-II__1252_1035_1774_1136_450_11361 point

Took my daughter out to learn how to ride a bike this afternoon after this strange yellow orb appeared in the sky above Scotland! I shot a mixture of standard all 0's and vlog-l with -5 sharpness and nr. I used a pre loaded lut in the vlogl assist mode to help nail the exposure. I have found that you cannot expose using one preloaded LUT in cam and then try and user another LUT in the edit as in most cases the exposure is off. If you use however the same lut in cam as well as in your edit you will find it exposes the same. Shooting standard all 0's really is tack sharp with lovely colour representation. I was shooting with the 12-35 mk1 which gives me dual is 1 and it really is great for stabilisation hand held. I dont think I would pay the extra to get the mk2 version for that extra .5 stop for dual is 2. I used a genustech variable nd and shot everything at 2.8 which was a bit too much for the vari nd at some points. uploading the footage now and will link it when ready. I graded the vlog-l footage with the filmconvert gh4 log profile. I had to bring the exposure down by 0.9 and bring up the shadows, I used the kodak 5207 stock.1 point -

There doesn't seem to be any software solutions but using an Atomos Samurai or some such would be a good solution. In a twin monitor setup running Photoshop, you'd have one monitor with all the tools on and the second monitor full screen of the image that you're editing. Loop this second screen through to the Samurai so it will be seeing exactly what's on that screen and you simultaneously have full real time histogram, vectorscope, RGB parade etc on the Samurai. It would actually be a neat system as you could mount the Samurai between the two monitors or above them or wherever and of course it serves double duty as a field recorder and monitor. And its a completely free system if you already own one Blackmagic do their Ultrascope system but its got issues with USB3 compatibility and would require come cobbling together to use it with one PC (basically you'd have to set up the PC to think it had 3 screens) and its also more expensive anyway than the Samurai. My logic in this instance would be to say that if I was going to spend $575 on the Blackmagic product anyway then I'd effectively be getting paid $80 to buy the Atomos one ! Or, more likely, I'd say that I was getting the shiny new 4K Ninja Inferno (which also does that stuff of course) for a bargain $420 Good overview of the scope functionality of the Atomos products here :1 point

@Arikhan ive never used the d500/d750 but i did some testing of the xt2 last night in my back garden. With the 24 1.4 and 35 1.4 it was able to lock focus on things i could barely see. With the 18-55 it wasnt nearly as successful. When i had the 23mm f2 wr, it was even a bit faster to lock on to low light subjects than the 1.4.1 point
-
@BTM_Pix Thank you very much for your efforts! Quintessence (as I understand your experience): There is not much difference between the D500 and the X-T2 concerning focusing in very low light on not fast moving subjects. @Django Thank you for sharing your experience concerning the difference between D750 and the X-T2! Yep...Technology moved on during the past years, but there is still a big difference between APS-C and FF in many aspects...shooting moving subjects in poor light conditions is only one aspect of the story.... @j-oc That's why (+ the poor shadow recovery and poor DR) I switched - for stills - to Nikon. The 5D m3 is a great camera (I sold all my Canon cameras - 1D line, 5D x line - except my first Canon camera 400d and the 7D, keeping these because of nostalgy) but for my needs the D750 is much more better (AF constancy, DR, etc.). The 5D m3 had (not only for me) a minimum of double as many misfocused shots as the D750 (not only in low light) when shooting moving subjects on location with high requiremets in detail. Some buddys told me, the 5D m4 would be much more consistant when talking AF and DR, but finally the Canon photo game is over for me.1 point

2 years. Is your screen broken? What Panasonic should do is implement a 'light' LOG profile like Canon LOG or the Nikon Flat profile which is dead easy to grade... because V-LOG is dangerously flat like S-LOG 3 and mashes too much too close together. The 'flat' profiles are a compromise between dynamic range and nice colour, easy to grade. CineLikeD was not it on the GH4... Maybe they have improved it on the GH5? I'll give it a spin.1 point -
ex-D750 owner, current 5D3/XT2 user. out of the three, 5D3 is by far my favorite stills cam for overall AF performance. D750 might have the edge in low-light situations but I use speed lights with AF assist anyways for those cases (D750 does rock in shadow recovery). XT2 is far far behind in AF and flash options. I'd never use it in any kind of demanding situation. In fact I've been kinda disappointed in it for photography vs DSLR FF but that's a different story.. I'm using it mainly for video. Am looking forward to all the AF enhancements the new firmware should bring..1 point

I had luck to buy XC10 last October for some 1600 euros (with a CFast 128 GB), and I am happy to use it for "gun & run", documentary, interviews, travel and similar things. I expect to use it in next 2-3 years at least. Like you, I was struggling with GH4 last year. Even I found that XC10 is not difficult to pair with Blackmagic cameras (Pocket, Micro and Production). Its 4K (with C-log) is, in my opinion, better in quality than FHD.1 point -

No lock-ups with the adapter yet but please wait and see. Very early days! The AF is good in stills mode with the adapter but nowhere near as good as with the Panasonic and Olympus lenses, which are lightning fast. The anamorphic mode on the GH5 is a resolution feast... Seriously nice. I will be putting my anamorphic lenses on it, and with a 2x lens if you kept the vertical resolution as high as it comes off the card and did the de-squeeze by stretching 2x horizontally you end up with a 10K frame1 point -

Buying Canon XC10 in 2017.
HelsinkiZim reacted to BTM_Pix for a topic
I honestly think in 2-3 years time when we are all done to death with cobbling together different lenses and bodies and interfaces and all the other hooch looking for perfect systems then we'll all end up buying camcorders again. The XC10/15 has a lot going for it in this respect. Everyone I know who has been sceptical about it and tried it has found it quite liberating to just have a one box solution that - when you look beyond the specs - just makes decent images and makes them without fuss. Obviously they aren't without their issues as you'll find if you have a search on here so whether this iteration of the concept is the right one at the right time I don't know. Canon have the wherewithal to make a Super 35 version of it with L optics with a constant 2.8 with a FF equivalent (not that old chestnut) of 18 to 300mm, retail it for 5K and it would probably be the last camera most of us would need or buy. Which of course is precisely why they won't do it! I tell you who might though and that's JVC if they used the LS300 as a basis. I've been using a G7 effectively as a camcorder this week with just one small zoom lens on it and relishing the speed and simplicity of the restriction rather than fretting about it. So, yes, I think if you just want to get and shoot do what you've described then the XC10/15 is not going to get in your way. In that regard, it has to be a smart choice! But.... If you're in that area, I'd also take a good look at the Panasonic FZ2000. Its a lot cheaper, faster lens (at the long end), much longer reach, has NDs, LOG, 5 axis IS, 10 bit very good stills extraction, much cheaper media, 10 bit 4:2:2 HDMI out.... The downside is that in 4K, its cropped to about 35mm FF equivalent (here we go again) which may or may not be a deal breaker for your application.1 point -
So hard to keep up with the huge threads in these subforums, but every time I come back and check.. wow. Bravo, Luca1 point

I shot it on the Flat Profile as is with the Saturation bumped down to -2. I find that Nikons can go overboard on reds and yellows, pulling back on the overall saturation helps to keep it under control, and if the surrounding colours are looking flat I can boost that in the grade. I also shot with Active D-Lighting on High -- I like the extra shadow detail when I'm shooting so I don't raise my exposure too high looking at an overly contrasty image. I don't think it really gives me any extra dynamic range, but it's not hurting so I leave it there. No sharpening in post, having a grain track overlaid gives the impression of sharpness -- if you look closely you'll probably notice that the only time I nailed focus was on the very last shot on his face, and all the GoPro shots where it was infinity :D I haven't shot that much on the 4k, that additional crop means I don't have a lens that suits what I do. I only use the D500 when it's super run and gun; if I have more time or control (or if I'm not travelling) I shoot my BMMCC. Having that 4k crop means my 17-50 isn't wide enough when I'm indoors, and if I put the 11-16 on then it's not long enough for when I need to punch in. I don't love the image from the Sigma 17-50, but the IS really helps and the range is perfect for what I use that camera for. Oh I also shot the whole thing with Auto ISO on, it's so great! It does occasionally get confused, but it never goes more than 2/3 of a stop off and you can keyframe it back in the grade pretty easily. Hell yeah, I can't wait to get back there with a bit of a budget and do a proper deep dive into the scene! There are some proper outlaw clubs there as well, I dunno how they'd feel about a guy making a documentary but there's only one way to find out!1 point

Plastic explosives could be hidden inside a working LiPo battery (Lithium by itself can explode and burn just by contacting water). Checked bags get heavier screening for bomb chemistry via high-energy devices: http://www.sds.l-3com.com/products/explosivedetect.htm. Additionally, checked bags are stored inside more resilient containers in the cargo hold vs. the relatively thin airframe where passengers sit. A bomb might also be used to gain access to a locked cockpit. These directives come from intelligence agencies and were also implemented on various levels from the prior administration, only now becoming politicized and amplified by people unable or unwilling to seek the truth, unaware that they are pawns in a much bigger plan. The programming is brilliant as the victims aren't even aware of what's been done to them, where their first unconscious reactions are typically expletives, irrational behavior, silliness, ad hominem, and complete inability for calm, rational, and polite discussion when their programming is challenged. How effective and deep does this unconscious programming go?
