More love for the Sony A6500?
shanebrutal and 3 others reacted to Oliver Daniel for a topic
In December 2016, I wanted a stills camera. After some thought, I was swayed by the A6500 because of the video features. (typical!). I've been testing this camera mostly on the excellent Zhiyun Crane (on a price / value ratio I'd say it's the best gimbal you can buy). On my most recent shoot, I put it in the deep end. I used Slog2, the 18-105mm kit lens and exclusively used autofocus for the entire shoot. Felt weird. (stills attached) Overall, this has the potential to be a very special camera... but it's not...quite...there...yet. Here's my mini mini mini review: PROS The 4k image is the best 8 bit 4k I've used. Certainly the best in Sony's lineup. There's a very special sauce going on here - it's super gradeable, detailed and the A6500 colour is much improved. Colour is improved? The image and skin tones are very, very pleasing - both using a standard everyday look and a stylised look (which I tend to go for). Sony look? Not here. Autofocus is very responsive. Absolutely essential on the Zhiyun Crane, makes it so much easier to focus on the shot as the image is 99% always in focus, even at shallow DOF. Compact power. Very nice to hold in the hand without a rig. Super light. 120fps is surprisingly good. Sharpened up and exposed nicely, it's a stellar 120fps. CONS Rolling shutter is a problem. It's easily avoidable however it can be annoying and ruin a shot. There's very little in the 120fps mode. Battery life is poor. This is a constant issue with Sony mirrorless. Even if they make the bodies a bit bigger for a higher capacity battery, needs sorting! The LCD dims very low. Maybe this is to manage heat or whatever. But the LCD does dim quite significantly. LCD gets scratched easily. These cameras need a cover to come with the camera, or flip the other way round. Got 3 scratches on my LCD from transit. Some of the buttons are flimsy and thin. Sony need to extrude the buttons more. The wheel on the back i especially fiddly to use. CONCLUSION The 4k image in XAVC-S is absolutely fantastic - I've not been wowed by image quality in a while. But it do get giddy when editing it. What's going on there? The shortcomings do dilute the experience a little - and Sony should sort them out for the A6700. With other expected updates, this would be a classic camera. There should be more love for this camera, as it sits under the hype shadow of the GH5. (I expect the GH5 to be awesome, but haven't used it). Overall - it's a very useful tool in the bag with some stunning features, great for stills too.4 points -

So you started this thread simply because you didn't like seeing Andrew "gush" over a camera he's waited for, received, has in hand, and realized he likes? It's a good thing Andrew's 'gushing' didn't start to ramp up until after he received it, and had some time to really check out. Maybe it's because you're taking offense to his opinion on Canon's current status in the industry? I mean, it's his opinion... and I'd kinda expect Andrew to post his excitement, dislike, opinions for any camera/camera manufacturer he chooses... especially on the front page of a site he created. Protesting personal opinion's on camera specs and camera selection... is that it? I dunno - carry on3 points -
I recently purchased the a6500 around Christmas time and as others have said on this thread the image quality coming out of this camera is to me is unreal. Granted, I've only had the Panasonic G7 before hand; I haven't had the experience of shooting with cinema bodies. But below are some still frames from a wedding I shot this past weekend.2 points

A very common sense evaluation to low light, IMO. Interestingly, to my eyes, the GH5 actually looked a bit cleaner at ISO 3200 & 6400 than the Sony. He also had an F2.8 on the GH5 and an F2 on the Sony. Beyond 6400, it was all A6300.2 points -

Only lately I was tempted to buy the GH5 (after I had sold my Pocket), but decided to give the A6500 a try. Reluctantly, because ... > I had seen the awful menu of the A7S and A7rii The menu is a mess. Fortunately, you have the FN-button and can dial M1-M4 for quick access and your preferred shooting modes. > I'd never liked the Sony "color science" There is S-Log2. Within the last 2 months, I learned to expose it properly and (almost, with the help of the histogram) intuitively for every situation except night shots, where Cine1 seems to work better. The DR preserved within S-Log2 is very good, the GH5, 10-bit or not, has less. The colors? I tried a few things and found the Omeneo primers (20 bucks) to be to my taste. Not much headroom left for extreme grading, but I'm not good at that anyway. > I was sceptic about the usability of AF Yes, I always focused manually. I still do, with very shallow DoF or in dark, low contrast places. But for most situations, the AFC is better than me. Fast, spot-on, reliable, no hunting. > I did not like any of the lowlight demos ... but nobody forces me to shoot like this. What's wrong with being able to shoot at ISO 6400 without needing Neat? > I heard terrible things about the rolling shutter I found this to be true. The solution to this is IBIS. Problem solved.2 points -

Heck we all suffer about it, that we don't have enough of it. If I had a ton of money I would be down in the Keys drinking Corona's and fondling my Arri Alexa XL. I would not be any better as a filmmaker because of the camera, and that I would probably be too drunk all the time to use it very well anyway. Oh and on a grim antidote. I have it in my will that when I die I am going to be cremated and my ashes thrown off the back of a boat, buried at sea in a sense, in Key Largo, my favorite place on earth other than maybe Naples, Italy. Seriously, I do not understand where this aggression is coming from, maybe you have some complexes with Greece, or Stalinists (you know nothing about Greek politics, this government passed extreme neo-liberal laws that the socialists/conservatives/multi party governments couldn't before). 1) I was asked about the Greek weddings, and replied, the story was ending there, until you came to save the integrity of the forum (or Sony, didn't understand) 2) didn't attack anyone, and I asked from Paul to excuse me, if the first sentence I ever wrote was offensive to him 3) just suggested my experiences of the a6500 being not appropriate for A camera as a wedding day, and the person we exchanged posts agreed that his friends using this cam as B/C or gimbal cam, and that is exactly what I said 4) my issues with this camera (and the a6300), are stated by the op on the CON segment of his original post, and I just add some facts. 5) in my UK University we were using our sources to our academic writings and Wikipedia wasn't the most preferable source, so I am trying to avoid it, while the only thing you do is some exercises in your creative writing course and try to use impressive words to cover the lack of facts and knowledge. I don't know you, do not remember any of your posts, do not care, you are not going to play any role in my life. I really like this guy's videos. If somebody is taking a magnifying glass to the dark shadow areas the image, the real failure is the composition of the shot. Noise only becomes a problem when it steals away focus from the message. ISO 6400 is clean enough where it should never happen. At 12800, I think it the composition needs to be strong for things like b-roll.2 points -

It sounds great. Same crop with the GH5 with metabones XL. But if you don't already own the metabones, that puts the GH5 + metabones at nearly the same price range as the 5D4 if you go gray market. And I'm going to guess 8-bit C-LOG 4:2:2 is more or less on par, and maybe easier to grade than 10-bit V-Log 4:2:2. GH5 Advanages (even after 5D4 update) IBIS Fully articulating swivel screen Video tools such as focus peaking, waveform, vectorscope Legendary Panasonic Battery life (Canon's video recording battery consumption rate is quite high). 4K 60p (vs 3K 60p on the 5D4) No 30-minute recording limit Less rolling shutter 5D4 Advantages: DPAF Canon skin tones Full frame 1080p (unchanged) Full frame pictures Conclusion: GH5 is still a great purchase. I wouldn't cancel your preorder.2 points -

I was considering waiting for it, but went for a URSA mini 4.6k ( I know it s not the same price range). I had a pocket, a a7s and a GH4/vlog. For docu and corporate work I think the GH4 was a nice camera but the motion cadence/DR was bad ( the motion cadence is also quite bad on the varicam apparently ) SO... yeah the gh5 is a better GH4, is it a cinema camera, no , is it worth 2k ? maybe , but for 2k you can get a second hand ursa mini 4k and I would probably go for that, especially if you do narrative/ music video work.2 points

I actually trust Kholi as well, but not this time. Comparing V-Log to S-Log on the A7sII? C'mon... If it is nearly as good as V-Log on the GH4 it'll put the A7sII to shame in terms of color science. Watch my showreel to see what I mean: Almost 99% internal V-Log! And yes, I've been using the a7sII quite a lot, always struggeling with the color, even using different profiles and combinations (such as Cine4, Slog2/3 SGamut 3.cine/3/2 etc). On the GH4 I just hit the portrait profile with: Contrast 0 Sharpening -5 NR -5 Saturation -2 Hue 1 And it looks almost identical to the color corrected RAW output of the FS5...2 points

Sorry for starting up another GH5 thread but figured this could focus on test footage/your first go with the camera. Here's mine - got it today, had 10mins of light left after work so took the kids to the park. A mix of 4K 50p and 180fps VFR, daylight WB, iso 200, Sigma 50mm on Speedbooster XL, Natural profile. Shot mainly wide open. No ND filter so controlled exposure with high shutter speed. PRO's so far: Options galore, amazing build, EVF/LCD= amazing. Picture looks GOOD! IBIS = incredible! CON's so far: Annoying sensor that flicks from EVF to LCD (can this be turned off?). Biggest con for me is not being able to flick to 180fps quickly. Had to dig into the menu every time. Really hope this can be assigned to a Function button but doesn't look like it so far. Grrr. I'm a GH4 and A7Sii user so looking forward to comparing. Be hard to beat a7sii but this beast might just do it!1 point

Yeah other than no OIS, I think it has a better output, color wise, than my iPhone 6s Plus. Trouble with iPhone I was pretty much forced to by a model with the 128gb memory to use with 4k. Paid damn near 1000 bucks for it! On the Note 4 it has a micro SD card you can use. Damn Apple and their whore making money schemes. It really gets old. But I use it mostly for the Facetime feature which IS a great thing to have when you have children, grandchildren all around the country like I do.1 point -
I am not sure splitting them from pro video division is a necessarily positive thing either. However, if they had an intention to ditch MILCs, they wouldn't have put so much resources developing and marketing GH5 (and the predecessors, like GX85 and G80) -- neither the CEO nor the circumstances have changed so drastically for the Panasonic to suddenly take a u-turn.1 point

I think the buzz around it is a good thing as it's making people who've got one get excited and get out there shooting and making the people who haven't got one take a good look at what they HAVE got and by and large think "I can live with what I've got. I'll buy some lights instead" Everyone wins like that. With regard to the AF100, if Panasonic refresh the HVX200 (which is a GH4 with a lens) with the GH5 sensor at NAB then it will have some serious attention for anyone with rig and jig fatigue1 point

100% agreed. I start getting nervous when I have to go to 3200 on 5D3 MLRAW, so the fact that that 3200 on the GH5 is more than adequate absolutely delights me. Pop a Speedbooster on there, as has been mentioned many times, and it's outperforming a full frame camera. What kills me with 5D3 noise is the very low frequency banding which looks entirely unnatural. The GH5 noise, on the other hand, just looks grainy - and that's fine.1 point -

I think Canon underestimated how many of their Mark iii sales were in direct relation to Magic Lantern. Without an ML hack and poor video options in the Mark IV, the sales probably haven't been as good as they projected. Conservative company or not, they still have share holders to answer to. If this rumor didn't include the heat sink part, I wouldn't believe it, with the new heat sink I believe that a lot of it could be true. Also a lot of folks are hammering Canon for not releasing a 1DCii, which I don't think they have plans for... the new 5D Mark IV will be that DSLR Cinema Camera that a lot of shooters want. Is it definitely true... IDK. If it is... it will probably be announced at NAB... Maybe...1 point -
The answer was regarding if peaking was a break dealer like DPAF, it is not, is it a great feature?, yes of course, but anyone can live without it with relativity no big issues, DPAF in the other hand is an amazing tool for docs and run&gun, if I am going to shoot a doc I want it, can I shoot the doc without it?, sure, but the quantity of pressure and work you put out of your shoulders is a lot....no shoot lost due to bad focus, that's just fantastic!!! If I am more oriented to fiction, then probably Canon is not the right tool, I use a Red One for that kind of shooting......and I would love an ARRI Now, I could not be more less excited about the GH5, is it a great tool?, sure, for the right people and projects, will I use it?, no way, I have Canon glasses, I don`t want to use a metabones, and if the rumors are true, at least part of it, like reduction of the crop factor and C-log, I will choose a 5Dmkiv over a GH5 any day of the week.1 point

I struggle to see how splitting the Micro Four Thirds cameras off from the Professional Video Division (which seems an ideal fit, except the latter is profitable and the former not-so-much) and making people redundant is quite such a positive as they are trying to spin it... It will be interesting to see what happens, but IMHO "redoubled" seems like marketing spin to keep people buying the products. Not that I'm suggesting cameras are doomed, but I think the ILCs will get trimmed somewhat along the way...1 point

What does this even mean? In it's current form the GH5 is already eating up 1.5 gig per min...that's before the FW upgrade...how many will be able to to afford a computer and data storage to accommodate raw?...it would be a disastrous business decision for Panny on a camera that's $2000...I for one am glad they are making smart choices....look at the GH5 they gave us...I remember many months ago all the various items people listed as their "wish list"...then Panasonic comes along and completely blows past it...of course for RAW they offer the Varicam 35 & LT....and they have to protect that line too...perfectly reasonable to me it seems....1 point -

A combo stand is much sturdier than a baby stand. Essentially, a combo stand is a junior stand that includes a smaller, pop-up baby pin. It's a safe assumption that most who have owned either a GH4, or BMPCC would already own either Glass or SB that could also be used with the GH5. How about clean 3200 and an extra stop from the speed booster = clean ISO 6400 in reality compared to a 1D X Mark II that does the same but for $4000 more. The people who complain about the GH5's footage haven't used one yet... The footage out there has been mainly poor and very compressed / 8 bit in feel The files straight off the card are not like that. They are mega chunky and astoundingly solid without a hint of compression, banding, mud or noise. I will upload some ProRes By the way you will need to transcode the files with this camera... EditReady does a superb job. Adobe did a really terrible job on the other hand. Editing native 10bit h.264 should be doable in 2017. By the way Eno thanks for posting a link on Vitaliy's forum to the Panasonic article... It's basically adding lots of saturation, then contrast using curves (find a proper black value using the waveform!), shifting the hues (bright green a bit to yellow, yellow a bit to orange, orange slightly to red, red a bit to magenta), desaturating shadows and highlights, desaturating bright oranges (helps for skintones as well), pushing gray or low saturation mid and dark tones (not black though, leave dark skin color the way it is!) to teal a bit, adding a bit of grain. That's it basically. :D1 point

@webrunner5 I am not that weird, as sale figures indicate! I am not big on m4/3 either, I still use GH4 but I never owned one, and I use full frame cameras for video, but again, I never owned one; there are perfectly good cameras for specific jobs that I enjoy more. My sweet spot is S35 and APS-C cameras that are close to S35, and Sony APS-C offerings in both bodies and lenses are not pro material, so a GH5 with a speedbooster is closer to my style than the a7s, plus I know that Panasonic will deliver something that will work as it is advertised, and it is advertised as a video work horse, definitely not a low light freak. Whatever works really, I understand one man band people like the A7s so much, but video productions are team work, and I am trying to change this "lone-wolf" mentality, even in my lowest budget jobss I try to employ 1-2 more persons (DP and/or after effects specialist), even if that means that I am earning silly money in the end.1 point
