Panasonic GH5 - all is revealed!
Fritz Pierre and 2 others reacted to Ken Ross for a topic
Hanriverprod, here's a pan I just did in the house. If you're still seeing a jerking motion when the pan begins, you're definitely seeing something I can't see. It's very smooth and any lack of smoothness during the pan is due to the nature of hand-held panning. There's no trace of 'sticking' at the beginning of the pan, as occurred with the pre-firmware G85 update.3 points -

All the attention on AF makes me wonder if this does not have something to do with the 24P revolution on the DVX100 and boom..."film look" and then DSLR's and M4/3's and real affordability for everyone achieving an image not that far off from S35 mm film cameras and suddenly everyone's a DP....overnight!....except they're not!...it took years of learning to change and clean lenses...switching magazines and checking gates after changing over each film mag...pulling focus, and then operating....and only a select few went on to become DOP's in a fairly large industry...but everyone went through the process of LEARNING how to work properly with the various aspects of the tasks the 4 to 5 people it took to just operate that camera had to be familiar with!...and now we are suddenly in point and shoot mode...and image be damned...if the DP ( tongue in cheek here!!!)...can't just point his camera at the desired subject and singlehandedly pull of Scorsese's several minute take in Goodfellas...well WTF Panasonic!!...what were your engineers thinking...clearly they were not thinking about the most important aspect to many about this camera which is AF!...the good news of course is for a few hundred $s the camera you want is out there... you can by an older Canon DSLR that will AF seamlessly and get down to the business of making your own dream projects...so all is not lost after all!!!3 points -
I'm like... ok, I don't remember Casey's vlogs always being purfect, but I still enjoy it, because of the content... then... I started noticing the reflection when he's up-close to the camera. Huh, I thought he went from Canon to the Sony A6500, but that's a vari-angle screen on a DSLR-style body... hum. Does that say 'Lumix'?... must be... 'Canon' surely, right? Too much issues with the A6500, back to the 80D. Wait... there's a 4K option... That really is crisp... how is a Canon that crisp? Unless... it IS a Lumix. Reads the description sees 'NEW NEW CAMERA' linking to the GH5 Amazon link. Isn't that something?!! Just when everybody turned to hating this camera, Casey steps up and shows that content is still king... good equipment doesn't necessarily make great content... good enjoyable content can for sure be had with whatever means you can get your hand on. Of course the best thing is when content & means go hand in hand. What do we think? I saw some out of focus bits, but no real hunting. I'm pretty sure his Canon and Sony had out of focus bits and it never took away from the story. Lens inscriptions make me think he's shooting on the new X Vario 12-35mm f/2.8 II2 points

Hey Jase, I'm in the same situation as you. Love the GX80 and it goes everywhere with me and the 15/1.7 mounted. Prefer the tilt screen too. I'm doing a small documentary with a lot of kids in educational settings. The client loves the fact that I just disappear and the kids forget that I'm there. I would love the extra slow motion and Tele-converter features of the GH5, but the tradeoffs in size, extra battery type, etc. are a pain. For sound I've been relying on a lav + small Tascam DR-10 recorder, but I've just received my instamic pro which is great and should make it so easy to quickly clip to someone when needed and record excellent audio without wires, especially kids. There is a unofficial facebook group about the instamic. I haven't had a chance to really test the mic yet, but when I'm on Easter Holiday this weekend, I'll clip it to my kids and see what I can put together.2 points

STAY WELL AWAY. POOR QUALITY and DOESNT work on Wide angle Pentax 645 lenses. Sooo, I finally bought this after coming across it on a few blogs (here included) and just wanted to post this quick update so that other people don't waste their money. Upon receiving the adaptor I immediately went about buying a bunch of 645 lenses and was pretty excited by the promise of this adaptor for my A7Rii. HOWEVER, the quality of the optics is pretty poor and as someone mentioned there's a lot of smearing towards the sides of the image. Then things got worse. When trying to attach my Pentax 645 45mm lens to it I found that it wouldn't even connect to the adaptor. After a lengthy email exchange with the supplier they finally admitted that it DOESN'T ACTUALLY WORK with wide angle Pentax lenses!!!!!! Guess that might have been a useful thing to have known. Anyway, now I'm stuck with trying to get my money back. As the saying goes...'if it looks too good to be true'........2 points -

Nice. Yeah, it looks fine handheld even at that speed. You guys are great for taking the time to provide samples like this. Thank you. edit*: only camera I owned was g85 when it had that problem, the reason I was skeptical about the tech. Again, it seems worth it for the steady handheld shots alone.2 points -
@tupp every single example where you state there's a difference between the two images is related to optics, not sensor size, or the tester didn't/couldn't set the systems up for equivalence. The differences between the Fujinon lenses is one has the APD filter (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apodization) and the other doesn't, which explains the difference in bokeh. Nothing to do with sensor size. Are you familiar with the scientific method? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientific_method. Your conjecture is as sensor size gets larger <insert specific properties which can be tested and characterized here>. Your Null Hypothesis is thus, "Sensor size has no effect by itself on the captured image". Now do your experiments using the scientific method. Do you own a camera and lenses? If not can you rent them? I only ask because you've never posted any of your own work. In your experiments you'll try your hardest to show that sensor size has no effect, eliminating as many variables as possible. Only after rigorous testing to try to eliminate sensor size as having an effect, can you then reject your null hypothesis and form a predictable theory which accurately describes the effects sensor size has on the captured image, and most importantly your new theory will be able to make predictions which can then be tested to further validate that your understanding of the system is correct. And that, brother, is currently the best process human beings have for understanding what's real, or not.2 points

Hi Sebastian! Thanks for the video. Downloaded it in 4k from Vimeo to see results more accurately. Looks good. But that IBIS is definetly giving some bad effects for the censor. That is a thing I am a bit worried. Did you try to shoot also without IBIS and what focal length did you tell for the IBIS to use? I haven't updated my GH4 to GH5 yet, but soon will. Anamorphic mode and how the GH5 handles it is my top priority thing. Few questions: 1. I am quite sure it isn't possible... but is there any chance to shoot 4:3 aspect in slowmotion = anamoprhic slowmotion possiblity? 2. You didn't try to shoot in "anamorphic mode"? I understood that you shot in 6k photomode only? That would be in h.264 format and 10-bit, right? 3. There isn't desqueeze in camera, right? GH4 still gives nice images and with external recorder + 10bit AND RIGHT GLASS it can still give really nice results. But still I am too sold over the GH5 can't resist One of my Anamoprhic 4:3 videos with GH4+external recorder:2 points

It looks amazing! Most of the time, you are right to say the stabilization is a little too much, maybe manually 35 \ 1.75 = 20mm would be better and avoid the little jumps and the vignette creeping in at random, I actually like a little vignetting in a shot but not being constant makes it distracting. How far away from the person in the shot do you have to be to a medium shot (waist to head) with your set up? 5 feet, 1.5m or so? Your work is as hypnotic and engaging as always, keep it coming and thanks for it.2 points -
My latest computer seems to have died on me after about 7 months. Luckily this time I had my important files on my external ssd. It was kinda cheap, and I expected it might be a little disposable, but 7 months seems nuts to me. I kept pretty good care of it, barely even moved it. Is a mac always going to last longer? Is an ssd hard drive necessary for longevity? And what's the best way to back it up? Because this is just terrifying. Copying and pasting the files to my hard drive seems wrong, and doesn't update the files when they're changed of course. paying seems unnecessary (plus I paid for a service for a while that didn't even work). Sorry for the noob questions, and I know it's been discussed, but yeah, any help would be great1 point

Cinegain reacted to JamesAllenVisual for a topic
I watched this earlier and thought how good the quality was during most of it - especially the boarding scenes. Better than usual which is always great quality so I assumed he was using a new Sony or Canon (going back to his 80D maybe). Wasn't till I read the comments that I saw it was a GH5! Blown away. All this negative talk about it not being good for vlogging etc and the king of pro vlogging is now using it. The stabilisation looks really nice of course is most of the shots. Would like to know how he's using the focus. Obviously has to get it right the majority of the time so needs to get the shot quickly. Some shots looked really wide so I was wondering if he was using the 7-14mm maybe.1 point -
The GH5 isn't made by Sony. Sure the camera gets warm after an hour or more, but I have yet to see any warning of shutdown. Doesn't matter if it's 6K or 4K, this camera is just built solid. I just shot a live event that was almost 2 hours and it was just fine. Even the battery lasts over 2 hours. Can't say that about Sony. As for 6K Photo Mode - it is exactly like 4K Photo Mode on the GH4. It not only records video but sound also. And it has the same aspect ratios - 4:3, 3:2 and 1:1. The short video below is a 6K clip with audio: The bummer part is that it is a "photo" mode - so it is accessed in the photo mode dials (MASP), not the movie dial. This means that it is considered a "photo", and as such the old picture styles are the only ones available. No VLOG, no Rec709L. CineV and CineD however are still available. Also, the metering is way off, like 1-2 stops. The easy way is to go to movie mode, set the exposure, then go the photo mode, and record. The roadmap for 6K Anamorphic is clear because it's very similar to the GH4. In the beginning, the GH4 only had 4K photo mode. It was only a year later that they decided to make a dedicated Anamorphic movie mode. I look forward to 6K Anamorphic later this summer!1 point

I thought about this for a moment - I think there are 2 different races going on atm... One is for quality - 4K, and the other is for more in the frame - sensor size. People are getting aesthetically confused as to what they like about a shot or video. This is all taking us further away from the race for good content. EDIT; and lest we forget DR. When was the last time you liked a video because of DR? We must understand what all these things serve, for example - great full frame with shallow dof works great for music videos and fashion, and great dr works great for flexibility in post to control moods in narrative and documentary - but we should not serve them. They should serve us. Luckily enough cameras are getting so inexpensive that you can own multiple cameras and choose them like film stock on a project by project basis. That is what I am doing.1 point -

I find the IBIS on the GH5 to be excellent for hand-holding and far better than the Sony A6500 I tried. I do think that video is accurate in that if you do 'walking videos' (I don't), the motion that's not as well damped is the lateral motion. I'm sure with a refined walking style, that can be minimized.1 point

Hey, i´d suggest a GX85 for family footage. It is a joy to hold in hand and has stabilization plus great image quality. Family members will love to hold it and use it. Use the display like most people would anyway and you can use the not so nice EVF for super challenging situations.1 point

Panasonic cameras are very cheap, and offer the world! In a sense, Sony cameras have all the specs too (though, do not exactly deliver). I am not sure that your statement stands, NX1 had the same price as all the competitors back then (even though vast better performance, of course), but in 2017, I do not see what a NX2 would have against the GH5, it would be close to 2000 for sure, and I don't think it could possible had 10 bit, even though it would have IBIS and the rest. NX1 became cheap, because end of 2015 it was obvious that Samsung is leaving the market, not because it was super cheap in 2014 and 2015. It is a pity though, let's keep the spirit alive, and someone pull a magic lantern raw out of this camera!1 point

iPhondo ran this same comparison https://youtu.be/8WD9C3C2koU?t=9m13s1) The entire lens and sensor system in that camera is floating. Small sensor, DR is not so good. 2) I don't think any camera has as good stabilisation as the x3000, 3) The wide angle lens reduces the visible effect of shake so a fair comparison would be with a super wide lens on the GH5 too. 4) The central handle used would reduce vertical motion but allow sideways motion due to its axis of rotation. A different way of holding the GH5 for walking shots is recommended for testing. Conclusion: There is some noticeable lateral motion from walking picked up by the GH5. As vertical motion is well damped the sideways motion can become obvious sometimes. This effect seems mostly due to a poorly controlled walking style or handle that allows the camera to rotate sideways. As it is, the GH5 IBIS is significantly better stabilisation than many other cameras, including the iPhondo’s actual blogging camera, the RX100.1 point

Dear god I hope not. It's of course personal taste but it looks as bad to me as watching TV with Intelligent Frame Creation. But it explains why some people say auto focus is fine and others say it'sbad. Today's Newsshooter short review also says that AF is a lot better in 60p than in 24p. I would guess most people will only use UHD 60p to create slow motion (also seeing how 24p 10bit is internal but 60p 10bit needs external recording). Some of the newer stuff coming out really shows nice images. I think Panasonic really delivered a great camera and I'm looking forward to see how the coming firmware updates improve on it further.1 point -

Thanks elgabogomez I do appreciate. The problem is that the vignetting is moving with the stabilization... For a medium shot maybe between 3 and 4 meters. Thanks Teemu, I've watched your video, nice work. I told 35mm to the GH5. I don't have the GH5 with me but I don't think there is slo-mo yet on 4:3 aspect anamorphic mode is in h264, 10 bit I don't think so. I have to check. I shot only in 6K, which is 8 bit bad fully not yet desqueeze in the camera Thanks PannySVHS No I was in natural mode -5 everywhere except saturation at +4. I hope firmware will give better results for the IBIS, such as choosing the horizontal or vertical stab yes it should be better with this choice We'll see if one day we would have the choice of type of IBIS1 point -

I buy a top of the line rMBP every three years with Apple Care and then sell it and replace it before Apple Care runs out. It's decently fast and very portable for working on the run. My needs are VERY basic, though. Adobe Suite and that's about it and almost always ProRes 2k or 1080p. I just got the 2016 touch bar last year and I'm not crazy about it, though, in terms of what it offers over its predecessor. A refurbished 13" 2013-era retina may be all you need and it's very affordable, about $1000. I would not recommend it for power users, however, and I'm not one myself. Usually my Mac Books still break quite a lot (almost always the graphics card or monitor), but I still have a working computer 99% of the time and I know I can fix it if it breaks. I use hard drives for back ups, and would recommend iCloud or Time Machine if you get a Mac. I keep a high end PC at home for when I don't have my laptop or when I need more horsepower, but I never use it. I mostly work from other people's computers so if I only had one machine and I worked from home maybe I would get an iMac instead. I probably don't need the PC. I find the total cost of ownership to be lower for Macs, but mostly I need full ProRes support for work and all my clients use Macs exclusively. PC laptops seem to have worse build quality than Mac laptops, at least in my experience. For desktops it's more of a wash and a home built PC is often the way to go for pure performance (everyone I know seems to have one of those, too!). I have had good luck with AppleCare so I continue to buy Macs as my primary machines. Given how often you use a computer (and how slow renders are), a higher end model pays for itself almost immediately but if you're using it mostly as a hobby machine, just get the best you can afford.1 point -

Surprisingly a SSD does Not last very long. A "normal" hard drive lasts longer. Best to put your stuff up on a cloud service. It is probably cheaper in the short run. But in reality Nothing in this day is safe because of Hackers! A lot of people just buy a New SD card for every shoot. They can last a long time if you don't use them all the time. And I would not think a Mac last any longer than a PC. They pretty much have the same stuff in them in order to work.1 point -
Yeah it's pretty neat, like an A7S II on steroids and PCP. Uh, yeah, sure, that's not only Area 51 but specifically S4, where they test out the low flight characteristics of reverse-engineered space saucer shipmobiles. The one in the video is the 'sport model' Bob Lazar spoke of I did a photoshoot in Sedona recently, and when looking for places to shoot, saw ads for UFO Tours, which guaranteed(!) sightings. I watched a video showing what the experience was like, and the tour guide was yelling- 'look there's one now!!' and people can be heard gasping in the background and asking questions for confirmation 'is that really a UFO' or something and they guide yelled 'yes!!'. I waited for the UFO to 'take off' and go up but it never did. Guess they had to use an ATV or Jeep and couldn't afford or handle the complexity of a drone for their UFO hoax tour. It's folks like these who give the real UFOs* and folks reporting them a bad name * advanced technology, most likely from government sources on Earth, with super cool advanced flight properties, possibly including mass reduction effects to allow for rapid accel and sharp turns etc. BTW there's a cool documentary where the US government encourages misinformation promoting aliens to cover up govtech, Mirage Men http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2254010/1 point

Computer longevity depends not so much on the brand as much as the quality of the components. So a more expensive computer is more likely to have better components and last longer. Of course that is not always the case and electronics are doomed to fail at some point. 7 months is too early and probably you got a lemon that should be covered with some form of warranty. If you can't have it fixed, then you should be able to remove the hard drive and access it on another computer. Its probably just a 2.5" sata drive judging by the price point. With that said, if you see the boot screen then you could try using a windows USB recovery drive and see if it can fix itself. For synchronization I use FreeFileSync. It is open source and it works great.1 point -

Plenty of pans and tilts here. Seems nice for handheld. There's a bit of the drag and catch up, but some of it is very smooth and nothing like what was originally plaguing the g85. I'm guessing this is fine for the state of ibis today even compared to other cameras? Also, the steady shots are great.1 point -
The beer example shows the images are not exactly the same. It doesn't show what is uniquely different about all large format lenses nor have you stated what unique image characterists all large format images have in common that make them different than smaller. Irrelevant when the filter first appeared. The Fujinon uses one and that filter alters the Bokeh. I hadn't either until recently, didn't even know something like that was even possible. It would be interesting to see how it could be used in the context of story. I think the point I and others are trying to make is that if you take a bunch of images shot with different lenses, sensor sizes and cameras that were shot at equivalence they would all look very much the same and identifying the large format images from the lot wouldn't be possible.1 point

He already diid address it with the article he posted, "The Minolta/Sony Smooth Trans Focus 135mm f/2.8 [T4.5] lens, however, is a special lens design introduced in 1999, which accomplishes this by utilizing a concave neutral-gray tinted lens element as apodization filter, thereby producing a pleasant bokeh. The same optical effect can be achieved combining depth-of-field bracketing with multi exposure, as implemented in the Minolta Maxxum 7's STF function. In 2014, Fujifilm announced a lens utilizing a similar apodization filter in the Fujinon XF 56mm F1.2 R APD lens." If you point is that different lens designs can produce different looks then I think we all agree. If you point is the large format lens design produces their own large format look you will need to show examples of them and define what the properties are.1 point

Panasonic G85 is weather sealed. Still fairly small and light. IBIS! No problems with over heating. Get the 25mm 1.7 at least and you're good to go.1 point -
No man, it would be pretty hard to hurt my feelings over something as silly as a camera. It's not like I personally designed and developed the thing. I just laugh because I now approach things from a different perspective than you and that's ok. I will respond to your post, but I doubt it will change your perspective. Even if not, hopefully someone will find it useful. Filmic is an overused term imo. There have been hundreds of thousands of films made and somehow filmic is supposed to mean one single thing that no one can quite put their finger on but is definitely (definitely) a thing. It's as if footage from any camera is either filmic or it isn't. simple, right? Black or white. I argued that you dismissed most of what made that particular footage look nice by saying something like, "Of course it looks nice, he had good light, color, compositions, movement, etc. but that doesn't mean the camera looks good." You dismissed the very things that are actually important and instead want to talk about non-tangibles like, "It's also thin like the pixels are spread over a sheet and if you blow on it it will move." Expert wine tasters have been called out time and time again for this type of talk, because when it comes down to it they can't consistently tell the difference between supposedly great wine and average wine. I'd bet in a blind side by side test you'd also have a hard time figuring out which camera has the pixels spread over a sheet that are in danger of being blown away and the one with the "thick" pixels or whatever adjective you "feel" applies to the good pixels. And in case it sounds like I'm totally dismissing how something feels, I'm not. I'd just argue that the way to make an audience feel something is to use all of the techniques that filmmakers have used for over a hundred plus years to manipulate their audiences into feeling this way or that. While people feel all sorts of things inside a theater including happiness, sadness, anger, fear, and disgust; I doubt feeling like the pixels are too thin has ever had any sort of serious impact on a movie-goers experience. That's the type of bull that's saved for over anaylizing in a forum such as this one. I've participated before, but now I see the error of my ways and have to laugh when someone like you reminds me. You don't have to like the GH5 or any camera for that matter, but don't make up stuff like spread out pixels over a sheet to convince yourself and others that one camera is bad and another is good. All cameras are different and I'd bet in a blind test of projected material with the same subject, light, composition, dof, camera movement, colorist, etc., etc. it would be difficult to tell most modern interchangeable lens digital motion picture cameras apart. Even the cheap wines...oops I mean ones and the expensive ones. If you were to say the footage looks over-sharpened, over-saturated, too contrasty, 60p instead of 24p, highlights too magenta, too much macro blocking, or any other actual physical characteristic and for that reason it's not for you, then fine. At least we're talking about real characteristics. Or heck, prove me wrong and setup a test that shows "stretched out sheet like" pixels that can be blindly identified. That would be fun. Oh and don't take any of this too seriously, except for the serious parts. You should take them very very seriously. And sorry for picking on you. You seem like you can take it though.1 point

Then it booted. And same next time. Got tired of it. Genuine Mac boots every time if the hardware is not broken. Of course, better choice with components could have resulted in more reliable Hackintosh. But I did not try that.1 point -

Apple's systems are elitistic, closed and esoteric, and you can see the "defense" of the system from their Zealots reach middle ages proportions. This closeness and lack of choices are not for me. There are thousands of different components you can put on a PC and build it on your own with just minimal knowledge of hardware and software, I found this more liberating than just buying something that others have choose for me, and make me pay 2 or 3 times the price for the same components, that I know how they cost, as they are the same ones I use for my PCs!! I just wish Linux was a bit better, it is good enough for most things right now, but not so for our specialized work. There will be other manufacturers and OSes down the line, I want to see this debate in 40 years, will any of those still be relevant?! "Since 2013, devices running Android have been selling more than Windows, iOS and macOS devices combined." Mobile devices: Android 87,8% - IOS 11,5% Almost 88% of the mobile devices users are stupid and brutes. We get it. Desktop Gaming: 95,4% PC - 3.55% MacOS. Yes, just stupid, because game industry isn't like the biggest entertainment industry on the planet already. No, just primates play computer games. I agree. Desktop/Laptop operating system browsing statistics: MacOS 11.20%, Linix 1.55%. What the rest of humanity use? Who cares? They are not MacOS users, burn in hell. Apple is just an option. Choose whatever makes your life better, because most people's on the planet, ain't Apple. Oh, but maybe we are just so poor, we can't afford an iPhone, or iShit, so go look at my first sentence then, and read again.1 point -

I do not agree! Metabones Nikon G adapters are priced at $ 479, they offer a focal reduction of 71X and can only be used with Nikon lenses. My adapter is the only existing for Samsung NX, provides a superior reduction and can be fitted with a Canon EF mount, Nikon F / G, M39, M42, Exakta, Pentax K, C / Y, Olympus OM, Leica R , Arri PL-STD-B, T -T2 mount- Novoflex A mount. It is built in Italy with quality materials and 3D printing technologies. Do you still think that it is expensive?1 point
