  1. Well, it's no secret, he has been showing that in the Vlogs for a few weeks/months now, explaining why he switched and what his new setup was so.... He maybe trying the GH5 as a possible contender, why not, just to see what the hype is all about. The FACT is the last one is shot (at least in parts) with a GH5, meaning at least possible interest. Good vloggers nowadays are the new filmmakers. Dismissing that is, i think, a mistake when you seen the content and quality some of them can put out every single day. Storytelling is storytelling.

  2. Marques Brownlee (a tech reviewer) did a Casey Neistat studio tour a while ago, he indeed uses an A7RII as his fix set-up studio cam. An 80D as overhead cam at his work station. RX100 V as pocket cam (like for... plane bathrooms). iPhone for just always having it with him. GoPros perhaps. However... the main vlogging camera has for the longest while been a Canon 70D (on a Joby Gorillapod, with either Shure or RØDE video mics). Then switched to the 80D... then had the urge to go 4K and yes, up to recently he had been using the A6500. But... he hates not being able to see himself and that's exactly the problem if you have a microphone mounted on the hotshoe and no vari-angle side frontfacing screen... which made him have to mark the lens with a white marker/tipp-ex to make sure the lens is zoomed out and lined up at that setting. Then you have the nauseating rolling shutter of the Sony... and well, that's not the greatest if you move around on a board and being hella active. Then there's the threat of having your recordings stopped at any moment due to overheat protection kicking in... that cannot happen to a content creator, sometimes there's no re-dos. Also... when recording in sunlight with the A6500 the screen dims... so if he would be behind the camera filming something, he'd have a hard time seeing what the hell is going on. So yeah... what do you do in that situation? I'd search for the next best thing that you can make work. A reliable camera with front-facing screen that doesn't dim on you, good rolling shutter performance, sensor stabilization. No 4K: no Canon EOS-M. No frontfacing screen/sensor stabilization: no Samsung NX1, no Fujifilm X-T2. So you automagically end up at Panasonic/Olympus that do everything right. Reliable cameras: check. 4K: check. Excellent rolling shutter performance: check. Vari-angle screen: check. Sensor stabilization: check. 'C-AF... well, it already checked so many boxes, let's see if I can make it work'. That's probably the attitude. He just looked objectively, what is the best camera for my needs and I mean, the GH5 is just about the most ideal camera you can think of... and apparently he did make AF work for him (though, we have no way of telling getting those results was an easy task or if like maybe this is 20% of the footage shot that was actually usable and that he had to throw away a lot of good content or had to shoot 10 takes to get one good take...). So this could be a keeper. Until finally someone else with APS-C sensors steps up and makes an E-M1 Mark II/GH5 with APS-C sensor/performance and superb C-AF.

  6. All I know is... my D5500's video looks more cinematic at 1080p than the G7 looks at 4K. The LX100 and it's 12MP sensor has more mojo than the G7 at 16MP. Now I'm not picking on the G7 or Panasonic or anyone else, but when a conversation arises about good, clean 1080p, the D5500 and the D750 always gets mentioned. And who cares about MPs? 21 MPs are more than enough. I am excited for the D7500. The 4K video I've seen from the D500 looks great. The 1080p I've seen from the D500 with it's IS looks great. @jhnkng recently posted a video from the D500... I thought it was shot in 4K but it was actually shot in 1080p. Yeah the crop could be better, but it's basically the same as the GH4 and IMO, the D500 has better 4K than the GH4. But I do wish it had peaking. In the end, the cream rises to the top. And any camera from Panasonic, Sony, Canon or Nikon, etc... can be used to make a fine film. A couple months ago, I told a story about how I was at the movie theatre over the holidays and the projector went haywire and the menu showed on the screen during the trailers. All of the trailers were being projected at 720p. Last week I worked a trade show and on their theatre sized screen, the video was being displayed at 720p video and it looked amazing. So we should probably stop worrying about this spec and that spec and instead work on making better films.

  9. Use 1-area AF if you want the best results. Period. In my tests I did not activate the custom AF settings and got very little hunting when I did the 'now you see the lens, now you don't' test. The same test that was a total failure for Max. IMO, for most uses, there's no need to use the custome speed and sensitivity, but if you insist, watch this video where he does adjust it but still gets better results than Max, because he used 1-area. Many subjects will also do fine when using the AF lock, which will totally eliminate hunting. Then there's MF, but nobody wants to discuss that. I just don't know what else to say on this topic, I'm worn out. Orangenz, unless I'm misunderstanding you, if you're using 1-area AF, you should be able to just tap anywhere on the LCD and get the camera to focus where you finger lands. It simply moves the AF box to the new area, but does it instantly. If you then hit the joy stick, it will return to the central area focus point. Ah, so even my 4 hour estimate was too high. Good to know.

  12. Its interesting that people keep on insisting that an APS-C with full sensor readout in 4K is something big companies like Canikon should build and that they would fly of the shelves. Uhm.. remember Samsung? It didn't sell at all. Companies like Canikon dont do stuff at random and without thought. This notion across forums that we the random user possess some magic power that makes us more informed than the people spending billions in research and development is naive at best. The video market is tiny. People go on about specs that would make it easier for some part time wedding shooter. Come on. I live in small town with maybe 100 000 people. Ill be surprised if even 10 shoots weddings. Maybe 100 are into video at all. And by that I mean use a camera, import, edit, export and publish a video on for example social media. But Im pretty sure every single one will at some point in their lifes take and publish a still. People use their phones and if they really get into it they buy a camera with stills in mind. Video geeks like me are a tiny and dying breed. Nikon is on its way down, marketing a new camera for video and have it ending up in the same section as the GH5. In other words having sales people say, "No, for stills you don't want that camera" would be suicide.

  13. This is my first test of using the 6K 29,97p 3:2 ratio on the new GH5. I'm happy with the results, please tell me what you think. But I want to share my teething troubles working with the GH5. 1- The first question was which focal lens setting did I have to choose for the stabiliser. My prime lens is a 35mm, but did I have to include the 1,75x factor of the anamorphic, that is influencing only on the width ? My first impression is that the internal stabiliser is not really the friend of anamorphic lens, some distortions or rolling shutter. There is some small moments in the movie that you can notice, but most of the strongest were unedited. Because of the prime lens which is 35mm, and maybe the wildest I can use with my baby Hypergonar anamorphic lens, I had to zoom in the image sometimes, when it's in movement for example, to avoid moving vignetting in the frame. I did up to 17%. 2- the H265 codec that is used for the 6K mode I had problems editing the 6K mode video. I have Premiere CC2017, but even when it downloads the H265 / HEVC codec, I couldn't really import the original files. Some of them were working, but most of them had strange result on the timeline with green colors. And not to mention the lag with playing the video, on Premiere or VLC. I test it on two different iMac, mine that is a end 2012 with 24 Go of RAM, and at the university that is a 5k iMac with 8 Go. So I transcoded the video with Handbrake, which surprisingly accept the 5184*3486 with H264 5.2 level. Then I decided to export directly in anamorphic without the black bars, in 5184*1976, then doing a same dimension sequence in Premiere. Badfully I couldn't export the same dimension when I finished my edit on Premiere, so I did it in the maximum that my version of Premiere accept at my home : 4K (4096 maximum on the width). When I will find the solution, I will export it in its original dimension 5184*1976. Having troubles with a new camera and a "new codec" and new dimension "6k" is not new for me and I accept it I remember when a long time ago when I bought the GH1 I had to switch from Final Cut Pro 7 to Premiere to be able to edit the H264 clips directly on the timeline. Thanks for watching the movie and do not hesitate giving me your opinion and your experience with editing 6K material from this new beast named GH5 ! GH5 6K 5184*3486 3:2 29,97p export to 4k 29,97p anamorphic 4096*1560 prime lens : Qioptiq 35mm f1.6 wide open most of the time anamorphic lens : baby Hypergonar 1.75x focus module : SLR Magic Rangefinder Imperial ND filters : Hoya 32x, 4x and 2x slight black and white levels / no color correction cropping due to vigneting of the anamorphic due to the stabiliser from 0 to 17% Thanks to Virgil for his GH5

  14. Just bought an AMD Ryzen 1700 CPU @ 3000mhz and a cheap msi am4 mobo + 32gig ddr4. It's the new way cheap 8 core chip and it edits 4k like a charm no more stutters, super smooth. My old i5 was terrible. Anyway if you haven't heard look up the Ryzen CPU's they're a bargain 8 Core (16 threads) and a no brainer esp. for editing needing to upgrade. Even with an 8gig 1070 videocard my i5 2500k didn't like 4k at all. btw I bought the Ryzen 1700 because it's the cheaper cpu and it overclocks easily to 3.9mhz with stock cooler with no fuss.

So this is sort of an informal poll as well as a question. First, which film here do you find more entertaining and/or interesting? https://vimeo.com/212758265 https://vimeo.com/108018156 There's not a right or wrong answer, just curious about which y'all find more engaging. Now, regardless of which vid you chose, why did you choose it? And a final follow up, how do you think this sort of thing affects the future of the "industry," if at all. Cheers!

  16. Respect to the guy for creating a style. Respect for filming every day. Respect for using every available tool at his disposable and getting rid of it if it doesn't work, for putting himself out there and being so open to criticism. It's not my thing, it's not my genre, but I really can't help but have a lot of respect for the guy. It's always easy to dig on folks because they're popular, and a million times harder to get to that level. Casey represents one side of filmmaking that I suck at. Marketing, being inventive and making shit work if it doesn't go your way, finding solutions when it'd be easier to just say it won't work. I like that, and I'll drop by his channel sometimes to get some inspiration and motivation. It's refreshing to take a break away from conversations about bit rates and colour banding and things that aren't at all related to just telling a story.

  17. I have to agree with @jcs. If you don't get skin tones right, and I mean close to dead nuts right, even in dark areas, you might as well scrap the whole project. We, as humans, look at humans first in any shot, video, photograph. It is an instinctive reaction. "Fight or Flight" syndrome. And men and women look for different things in the scene. Human Nature.
    1 point
  18. If that were true, why is ARRI considered to be right up there with Canon for color (some argue they have better color)? There is a biological, psychological element with color related to evolution. Human beings are very tuned in to color for skintones, on both conscious and unconscious levels. If the skin tones are off, we tend to notice right away- is the person healthy or sick, friendly or threatening, happy or frightened, etc. The concept of Uncanny Valley is also a factor: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uncanny_valley . If something is close to real, but off slightly, we have a strong negative reaction. So color needs to be right on, or very off (cartoon) to work well. Canon (and ARRI) know this, and if colors aren't exact on color charts, the reason is they are biasing for skin tone colors which will have the best positive emotional reaction from humans. Colorists make colors 'off' on purpose for emotional reasons, ScFi/horror etc.

  19. This the case I use and my HP 30" sIPS 2k monitor. It can hold 13 hard drives! Unit on top is a Blu-Ray read, write player from Lacie. My 16x19" Canon Photo printer on the right, Pro 100, Death Adder mouse, only way to go. And I use an OLD, like me, Microsoft ergonomic keyboard. Since I am a gamer also highly recommend one, when you get old like I am you will Regret Not using one trust me!!! I run with 32gig of memory also. But that is because I am a Gamer. You really Only need 16gig for Video. Where you need as many gig as you can afford is on the Video Card, GPU. Try for 6 gig, 8 gig if you are well, well off LoL. I have seen no real worth the effort for Dual Video cards with video editing. Now gaming, hell yes, bridged they work well at keeping your FPS at 60 or more.

  20. Of all attributes in a camera, color requires the most science. From the point where the photons hit the color filter array (or ND or IR filter) to the final pixels viewed on a display device via biological cameras and neural networks (people), that entire pipeline is insanely complicated physics, math, and biology: science! Khan is pretty good a simplifying complex stuff: https://www.khanacademy.org/partner-content/pixar/color (check out some of those videos- very well done!) There's a reason ARRI and Canon are dominant, and it's not about subjective taste: they have superior color science. ARRI spent years working with film, then film scanners before building digital cameras. Canon makes printers, copiers, scanners, inks, paper, etc. in addition to cameras. They are currently the pinnacle of expertise in color- it makes sense their cameras have worked so well with color. It's why they can make cameras with limited features compared to other brands and still easily outsell them: color is the most important attribute of a camera.

  21. This makes a lot of sense...I think one will have to pick your battles with how you expose...for narrative, a light meter will always the preferred choice, but for what Jon does, in the case of the dark scene except for a sliver of sky, I would imagine the default would become to let the highlight blow out...so much is dependent using this exposure method on the actual scene.

  25. I agree, the colors are noticeably better with his older videos. I even noticed a little Jersey Shore spray tan skin tone with the GH5 video. But also I think his life looks more interesting through a Canon lens and Canon camera. It's grittier, more suited to his style. When he throws around these other cameras, like he did his 70D, he may just switch back.

  26. Like it or not...Neistat is a major player in the content creator world. Whether that means filmmaking or vlogging...I think the two are actually more connected than they'd like to admit because they are still creating content. I'm a fan of his work and his rapid-cut editing style. I know he recently said he was using an a6500. I'll be honest though....I liked his colors better when he was using canon. This only has to do with colors not image quality or otherwise. There is no doubt Sony is killing the frame rate game. We shall see what he has to say about the GH5!!

  30. Yes, but it's just another way to distinguish oneself from peasants that are using their smartphone or Canon G7X II. 'Look at that shallow depth of field, wow that's expensive and impressive gear, (s)he must be damn good being able to afford that'. I'd say camera movement, using sliders/stabilization/gimbals is another hint of appearing (not neceesarily being) 'next level'. Btw, I don't think Casey is selling out and allows manufacturers to force him to put out positive reviews (well, maybe Samsung a lil). I really do think that over time you just develop different wants and needs and having the oppertunity/means (btw he has cash enough to finance his gear, we've seen him breaking & purchasing gear a few times), to check out the new next thing, who of us wouldn't embrace that? Like I said before, trying out the A6500 for run'n'gun field schtuff he's run into issues looking for the next best thing. He uses the A7RII all rigged up in a Tilta cage with a SmallHD monitor facing him, a set-up for a studio, not so much on the street.

    GH5 focus excellence

Davey, it's such a pity the word doesn't get out. Such a great camera where AF can absolutely be used successully with the proper settings. I was over at a friend's house just yesterday and he had been disappointed with some of the AF results he had gotten. I set the camera up for him and he's now delighted.

    GH5 focus excellence

I was thinking of you when I watched it this morning. It is pretty damned obvious that having 5 million focus points versus one single area is going to yield two types of results. For some reason, nobody is listening. He's do well to get one hundredth the views of somebody trying to focus underwater in the dark with the lens cap on.

  33. As i will buy 2 cameras in July, I just took a look at the LS300 (@Mattias Burling has tested it) for a few hours with a friend who owns it. Some remarks: It has a respectable 1080p quality (25p +50p too), no complains. 4K IQ is also OK. Colours: Some kind of "sterile", no structure/texture in images - it reminds me of the NX1. Colors are pleasant/neutral, but not exceptional in any sense. Really useful: The dual card system allows you to record in different (independent) resolutions, so you could record 4K on the first card and 720p on the second card. GREAT, because, the LS300 allows you to send your footage immediately LIVE, eg to Ustream or YouTube. For people who need this feature - very good. (You can send your footage per FTP too...) AF is (for contrast AF) great, we've tested it with a Panasonic 35-100 2.8, the OIS of Pana lenses works with this camera well. BUT don't expect as much stabilization as from a classical camcorder or a modern IBIS + IS lens. AF + Canon (+ E2MFT adapter) lens is very slow and hunts sometimes, depending on used lens... Turns every prime lens you mount to it to a parfocal zoom lens - just focus and push the zoom rocker button and the camera will keep focus during zooming. A very useful feature too...Focusing features are good... The camera needs contrast (another similarity with the NX1) in low / decent light, otherways you will get very fast some noise and/or washed out colors. 4K J-LOG is maleable, no banding in the skies but we didn't push it too far. It seems, the coming update will make the recording of 4K 60p possible - but only with a external recorder. This way you loose the portability advantages of a very light camera. Generally the LS300 feels a little bit "cheap", but hey it's only 2.800 Euros... For a mixed usage - ENG + filmic work - hard to decide...Not enough stabilized (with IS lenses) for carrying it on your shoulder, but excellent for live broadcasting.

  34. So it's weird that I know this as I'm not an avid YouTube watcher, but I checked out his account this past few days and being the camera forum lurker that I am, checked out his stuff. He switched to the Sony A7SII a while back, didn't like the AF (what AF?) and went back to Canon. Then, he got the A6500 recently for it's AF and in the last few days appears to have added a GH5 to the mix. Say what you like about Casey's stuff, but he uses gear if it works for his format or gets rid of it. Which is exactly how it should be.

Like others, I've used PC's and Mac's, just prefer the Mac OS and FCPx and for me OS X has been much more stable than all recent versions of windows. Plus I'm virus free without running any system clogging anti-virus software. Just my preference and what works for me. YMMV. Cheers

  38. Will do a round of proper testing. It certainly seemed a lot longer than 4 hours. But here's the thing, I come home and have 4 hours available before sleep. So can I get 5 batteries charging in that time? I was short on two fronts. A little too slow on the charger, and too many batteries for single charger. Now I have 3 slots available :D Yes, the indicator works with them. I just noticed though that the AM battery still had 40% charge after being declared empty so I think I'll shutup for a bit until I've done some better comparison tests.

    New computer -_- help

Apple already makes the world's most-used camera, the iPhone. I think it produces a great image for what it is, great color and the HDR mode rocks for stills. You still need a crew to use an Alexa properly (less so an Amira, which even does grading in-camera if you want) but it's definitely built for luddites and to fit into existing workflows, more like the G7 than the AF100 I suppose (having never used either). So I think these brand preferences boil down more to what approach you take than what offers what for the money.

The crop is the same as the GH4 with native lenses and less than the NX500. Most audiences rarely say after watching a movie... man I wish the crop factor was smaller. With faster lenses like the Tokina 14-20mm f2, you are basically at 28-40mm. The 1080p looks great... I'd agree $1000 would be a better price point and when it gets below that, I'll probably buy it.

  42. It is always better to downsize from 4K(UHD) to 1080p, true, but the 4K rolling shutter in most hybrid cameras (except GH5 maybe) is terrible, and for most instances (home videos that never will be edited, big performances/live video that last too long) it is just easier, more manageable, less expensive to just shoot 1080p. But yes, if you shoot 4K/UHD and downsize to 1080p, you are definitely have a quality advantage. Do not forget, that this is the ONLY method of shooting video with a6300/a6500 cameras, as their 1080p video is worst, even to the a6000's one, so having the 1080p of NX1 I consider it a bonus.

    nikon d7500 released

What a joke again from Nikon. We were used to have 0 upgrade on their new camera (Snap bridge?) But this was nothing. Time has come for upgrade being a downgrade: -1 slot instead of 2. - shorter battery life -D500 sensor meaning less mpx and a lot less Dynamic Range. Don't look at Dxo, they are just numbers. Look at Dpreview DR studio tool where you can actually see a real image and push the shadows. What a huge difference between d7200 and d500. D500 is a great body for many reasons but not for DR. It was not aimed at landscape anyway. I won't even speak about the shitty video mode with big crop and poor specs, far behind Sony or Panasonic. This is scaring me a lot for the D820. Having this as an upgrade? How can people accept it and even think to buy this D7500 is beyond me. Nikon and Canon are 2 ridiculous companies taking their customers for granted, releasing the same shit year after year for the past years. I wish them to continue the same way and die in silence when others (Fuji, Panasonic, Sony) who dare to innovate may rise.

  47. NX2 would have been scheduled for mid/late 2017 and would have had a much better sensor (i.e. APSC vs m43 to begin with and possibly more than 28MP), with embedded dram for very high performance in slow motion (240fps@1080 at least and 60fps@4k). Who knows? Perhaps it could have been the first 8k consumer camera... And since NX1 is still a much better camera for stills compared to GH5, I can only imagine what NX2 could have been there.

  48. As you already have invested on a system (Nikon) I wouldn't suggest another one (as usually, even without really need, you will eventually buy more lenses, accessories, etc. It happens all the time with me!). One little camera I really enjoyed was the LX100. Super pocket able, has most things you will ever need, nice sized sensor for a compact, good lens, and in general an excellent buy. Especially if you can spot one with a real low price. The only downside is that it will eventually be replaced, but the new one will be very expensive, and of course we don't know when it will arrive.
