Hey Everyone Upcoming update for GH5 is on Monday Panasonic has announced the first of its planned firmware updates (Ver.1.1) for the LUMIX GH5, which will expand the camera’s 4:2:2 10-bit video recording mode. The new firmware enables 4:2:2 10-bit video recording in either FHD [MP4(LPCM)] / [MOV] or Anamorphic (4:3) modes, in addition to the existing 4K video recording mode. The GH5 delivers Cinema 4K (4096×2160) video at 60p and 4K at 50p, using the entire width of the sensor when shooting 4K and then downsampling the footage in-camera. What the firmware will offer In 4:2:2 10-bit 1920×1080 Full HD [MP4(LPCM)] / [MOV] mode the firmware will offer 50p and 25p (PAL), 59.94p, 29.97p and 23.98p (NTSC) and 24p (Cinema) – all at 100Mbps with Long GOP image compression. Whilst in 4:2:2 10-bit Anamorphic mode (3328×2496) it will offer 25p (PAL), 29.97p and 23.98p (NTSC) and 24p (Cinema) at 150Mbps with Long GOP image compression. Bug fixes The firmware version 1.1 for the GH5 also includes following bug fixes: • A problem in which the exposure adjustment did not operate properly during live view standby under specific condition in using (Variable Frame Rate). • A problem in which afterimages appeared when recording video under high ISO sensitivity settings in using (V-LogL). Im not hoping on any new camera's, there is a lot of good choice already atm. But I hope somebody finally releases some decent budget single focus anamorphic lenses. At a sub 2K pricepoint per lens or something.

Yes there is a difference. I had a 16/32 and a moller 32 - one with great front optic one with great rear optic. I took it to a lens repair shop to see if the elements could be swapped to make one great lens and there were subtle differences in the optics. Also worth noting that the repair shop got hold of a couple of another 16/32s and went to undertake a swop from one of those and the element was a little different there as well. So not only are there differences between the 32 and 16/32 but not all 16/32s are alike...

Imho, the thing to do with these cameras to make them look more cinematic, is to shoot with "vintage" (1970's) fast prime lenses. You get a 24mm f/2 prime and go to work. Nothing more, nothing less. The cohesiveness of shooting just 1 focal length is often dismissed, but I feel it's very important. For one thing, it sets the "look". Good, that's settled ...now go concentrate on other more important stuff. Like lighting, acting, blocking, costume design, etc. I swear to god, just accept the simplicity of using 1 lens and it will truly help make your footage look better than most...especially if your just starting out and trying to find your way. Keep it basic, clean, and beautiful. A gx85, a 24mm f2, and 24fps 4K. That's all you need IQ-wise. Seriously. That's more than fine. Consider that done. Don't worry about the tech at this point. Go make something worthwhile and compelling with it.

Yeah looking boring so far but remember... it doesn't start proper until Monday. And leaks usually don't start to appear until the day before. However I am not that hopeful for much excitement on the camera side. Sony probably won't come with an A7S 3 just yet... Panasonic probably won't come with much as GH5 still fresh... Canon probably asleep and Nikon probably doesn't even know NAB is on

I know a solution. It's called Final Cut Pro X. The days are are long gone when Apple radically changed it. This is now an absolutely incredible edit program. In comparison, Premiere feels vastly outdated compared to FCPX's fluidity, speed, reliability, innovation, intuitive usability. It's just fantastic. One of Apples best properties. If you're frustrated with Premiere, FCPX is a no-brainer. Time for people to let go of the past and wake up.

You're making stuff up and putting words in our mouths. Understandable that you would run. The G85 is basically a stripped down GH4 with some improvements like better color science (easier to grade), lower noise levels and IBIS to name a few. Tell me exactly how that means we're telling him to shoot full auto? It would be damn nice if you could enlighten us!

The only camera I've owned with IS was the HVX 200...so I have yet to really understand the freedom you can get with handheld on the G85, and when I get mine, the GH5...you produce beautiful stuff, but I imagine you paid your dues learning the fundamentals a long time ago to come up with this stuff...of course, as you stated, you shoot everything in manual anyway...and the GH4 new is still over $200 more than the G85 which I've never owned, but seems to produce even better images under certain conditions than a GH4....I record strictly to external in 10bit Prores so my needs are different...

Indeed. Reason why I had asked it to the Max/Joseph GH5 test partnership... Unfortunately, people don't seem to care about. The devil is in the details ;-)

I agree with @fuzzynormal going down the prime route. I did it myself, too (more by accident, because I just lusted the Voigtländer). When I later tried some zooms, they gave me more freedom in choice, but I found out that I either use them at the shortest or at the longest focal length and that it distracted me a lot. So if I were you, I would try to find out which focal length I might be using most of the time and go for that. I started with 25mm and now went down to 17mm (4k crop) which suits me most. Occasionally I would love to have something even wider, but thats not that often. So, it all depends on what you need. The maybe ideal focal length compromise would be 20mm - the Panasonic 20 1.7 is just about perfect, if not for the slowish AF. If you want more tele, choose one of the 25mm lenses either from Panasonic (Summilux 25 1.4) or the Olympus (25 1.8) - both are fine lenses. If you want to go wider, go for the Olympus 17 1.8 or the Panasonic Summilux 15 1.7. In your case since size doesnt seem to matter that much, I would clearly advise you choosing the G85 based on mic-in, weather sealing and the flip out screen.

Thanks Marty, I appreciate it. Yeah that shot turned out okay, even with the JPEG compression from the screengrab. The other interior shot didn't fare as well as a jpeg. This has all been handheld, but I usually use a monopod. I have a Sirui and a Benro. Both are great. The Sirui is a great concept, but it hasn't really held up to the test of time. The Benro is more solidly built but it isn't as stable on its smaller feet... there's always concessions with inexpensive gear. No footage for now, not until the short is finished. But I will leave you with a few final screengrabs from part one of my shoot. Now these are all just color tests but they're close to what I want the final mood to be. After running my other cards through Raw Magic and Resolve, I think @Nikkor is right about going the Resolve route. Now I just have to learn how to use Resolve more proficiently.

Ain't that the truth. On Part 1 of my short shoot, after we shot at the ferry and the docks, I was bummed because I was afraid the interior motel stuff, where the majority of the story takes place, wouldn't live up to the imagery of the opening sequence... it probably won't.

lol same i swear if you start doing ml all that forum stuff will make waaay more sense i havent gotten into the higher res modes yet but once they get live view worked out i bet itll be easy the only problem with ml raw video is that the image is so satisfying it immediately leads to the real question: What am I going to SHOOT? ?

If you want to ban someone for pointing out real log is different to your flat profile (which is really good and useful, btw)... Then ban away.... I thought you liked honesty though?

Looks like Canon have noted Panasonic's "we'll send you it in the mail" approach to log upgrades and gone "Nah, fuck that....lets go utterly retro and make them actually physically bring the camera to us to have it done". Strikes me as a bit suspicious that you have to take it to them. Is this their sneaky way of getting a firmware and hardware mod on that locks Magic Lantern out of it permanently thereby ensuring no one gets a free ride from buying future Canon cameras whilst simultaneously making them $99 a time for the upgrade and saving them that darn $2.99 on postage into the bargain? Fiendish if so.

I might pick up a GH5, but definitely waiting for NAB to see what camera bodies are announced. A new A7s or something killer from Fuji would be intriguing. And I'd love to see more compact designs from Blackmagic. A Pocket-Micro revision or an Ursa Micro with a 2.3K slice of the 4.6K sensor would be kinda dope. I'd scoop that up in a heartbeat.

In December 2016, I wanted a stills camera. After some thought, I was swayed by the A6500 because of the video features. (typical!). I've been testing this camera mostly on the excellent Zhiyun Crane (on a price / value ratio I'd say it's the best gimbal you can buy). On my most recent shoot, I put it in the deep end. I used Slog2, the 18-105mm kit lens and exclusively used autofocus for the entire shoot. Felt weird. (stills attached) Overall, this has the potential to be a very special camera... but it's not...quite...there...yet. Here's my mini mini mini review: PROS The 4k image is the best 8 bit 4k I've used. Certainly the best in Sony's lineup. There's a very special sauce going on here - it's super gradeable, detailed and the A6500 colour is much improved. Colour is improved? The image and skin tones are very, very pleasing - both using a standard everyday look and a stylised look (which I tend to go for). Sony look? Not here. Autofocus is very responsive. Absolutely essential on the Zhiyun Crane, makes it so much easier to focus on the shot as the image is 99% always in focus, even at shallow DOF. Compact power. Very nice to hold in the hand without a rig. Super light. 120fps is surprisingly good. Sharpened up and exposed nicely, it's a stellar 120fps. CONS Rolling shutter is a problem. It's easily avoidable however it can be annoying and ruin a shot. There's very little in the 120fps mode. Battery life is poor. This is a constant issue with Sony mirrorless. Even if they make the bodies a bit bigger for a higher capacity battery, needs sorting! The LCD dims very low. Maybe this is to manage heat or whatever. But the LCD does dim quite significantly. LCD gets scratched easily. These cameras need a cover to come with the camera, or flip the other way round. Got 3 scratches on my LCD from transit. Some of the buttons are flimsy and thin. Sony need to extrude the buttons more. The wheel on the back i especially fiddly to use. CONCLUSION The 4k image in XAVC-S is absolutely fantastic - I've not been wowed by image quality in a while. But it do get giddy when editing it. What's going on there? The shortcomings do dilute the experience a little - and Sony should sort them out for the A6700. With other expected updates, this would be a classic camera. There should be more love for this camera, as it sits under the hype shadow of the GH5. (I expect the GH5 to be awesome, but haven't used it). Overall - it's a very useful tool in the bag with some stunning features, great for stills too.

Haha, it's funny, when the Sony A9 was announced I spent the day tallying up how much I can sell everything for and how much a brand new Sony system will cost me (quick answer: a lot). But then I told my wife what I was doing and she asked me why I wanted to switch -- and to be perfectly honest I couldn't come up with a solid answer. Sure there are features that I'd like, but nothing I have now gets in the way of shooting and I like the results I get. I'm currently working on a documentary project for a local non-profit and I'm shooting on my Micro in 3:1 RAW, and workflow issues aside, I'm finding it harder to nail a look with the Micro compared to how quickly I found the look with the D500. Having a semi-flat profile rather than a full on log profile makes a really big difference.

That's not my footage. I got some downtime these days and started looking into cameras for b footage and personal bts stuff. I was waiting to buy the gh5 or a c100 ii and then got second thoughts with this news of the 5d iii. I like the image but waiting to see if they can sort out the liveview, playback and hdmi monitoring at least for 3k. I been trying to follow the progress on ml forum, but it's hard to understand what they're talking about between liveview, frozen lv, hacked preview, preview auto, preview real time, zoomed real time preview, framing preview, ugh. I tried searching terms like hacked preview and the only result I get is the post where I read it. I can't tell if they are being fast and loose with these terms which describe one or two things or it's really this convoluted. I'm not really a tech person, so even though I think the images are great, I'm concerned using the camera and the workflow is actually even more confusing than what I'm reading.

A7SIII to be announced in June after preorders for A9 at shipped. Doubtful that they announce something big tomorrow

The thing not really mentioned often enough in this thread, as that is really what it's all about, in this or any camera, is the image quality...I have to say I was expecting a good image...Panasonic completely surpassed my expectations with the image out of the GH5!

No GH5 here yet, but as far as I could understand from what I've seen from other users' videos, in MF, you have to drag it, right. In AF-C, it is the way you describe. But, you can always use it in other AF mode than AF-C or not? As for instance here: Or here:

BTW, tap-to-focus is actually part of the GH5 AF system, the point is that works in both AF and MF modes, so... AF, whatever the finest settings we find, could never be such a deal breaker at all! :-)

Oh right, basically it takes a grid of 3 x 3 pixels and combines all that data and displays it as a single pixel. That way they can capture the full frame and reduce it to 1080p without line skipping.

Ha! Great thread. Over the course of this on line conversation I considered the GX85, mulled it over, bought one, tested it, enjoyed the results, bought another one, began to shoot 6 short documentaries with 'em, learned to resent my producer along the way, clashed creatively like I've never done before, shot a ton of misc corporate stuff, did some time-lapse that one time, finished the documentaries, sold the first one to a woman so she could take pictures of her newborn grand-daughter, sold the second one on ebay, and generally enjoyed using the camera during it all. Didn't fall in love with the GX85, but liked it plenty. Still seems like the best value for money on the market if you like smaller-sized cameras. I'll continue to recommend it.

I just posted a test which kind of does that. Once the camera starts recording no interaction with it other than pointing at objects in the test field - pan / tilt / back and forward on slider. Shallow depth of field, range of objects, varying light intensity. Sound seems to get neglected round here so put a bit of effort into that too.

@webrunner5 Hmm...Never underestimate Canons and Nikons power in journalism or wedding market. Their brands as still cameras are very strong and they have very good and reliable devices. Sony is very innovative but though it has to learn built quality & usability from its competitors. Innovation and technical excellence are only two aspects in a very complex and competitive market hardly damaged by the "smartphone revolution"...Just my 2 cents...
