Yes. There was a leak. I am not saying anything and I didn't post this. I may or may not have heard something tonight at a party It may or may not have been a reputable source but from what I was told it sounds like the perfect camera. We will see tomorrow

  2. OK I am back. I apologize for that BIG TIME RANT. Everyone on here has different views, different budgets, different goals and needs. So guess what, it means we are All different. Not what I want to impose on you, but to help with what you need, not me necessarily. So I will bite my lip, listen, learn, and well, hope top have some fun. I am a old ENG guy as you know. It was old school back then, with nothing auto because nobody figured out them How to do anything auto. But it is a new age, era, whatever. Time for me to learn new things, but I find my old AF100A pretty old school, so I am happy. But If I was going to go on a vacation I guess she would stay home and the G7 goes on a trip. But my long term goal is to own a newer Red or Arri. And they are old school layouts also. So that is why I have sort of stressed learning things most don't want to or need. But I Need to re learn a lot of it to run one. so... Nice to see X amount of people wanted me to stay on, means more to me than you think. Thanks and lets move on as they say.

They should put a touchscreen on it to make its DPAF more useful. Add 4k and also improve the screen and EVF and it'll be good.

On the whole I like Premiere as an NLE and se it daily, the native grading is much better than FCPX's, but Adobe's atitude to bugs is terrible. There are still horrendous bugs in audio, the mixer and automation, if using a mixture of high DPI and standard displays and so on... The same bugs reported endlessley, thread after thread, year after year, no solutions. The same simple feature requests over and over, completely ignored... BUT WAIT! NEW MAGIC EDIT BUTON (or some similar gimmick)

  7. I know where you're coming from. I started in this industry in the shipping and dubbing room which meant quality control from one format to another. All I looked at for years was vectorscopes and waveforms, and they are burned into my brain. Still, these days I shoot personal stuff with my iphone, old nikon, and a rx100 iv, and it's easy to use auto-iso and auto-focus everything that I know my images are worse for the wear, but I actually enjoy shooting more. Now when I do professional stuff I have to deal with a camera crew and sometimes they are younger and don't even use a light meter anymore which to me was just insane a few years ago. Now I see that it's much easier to dial in what you want from just looking at the monitor and using new tools like false color. Still, I think we see the flood of crap online because a lot of people who are "pros" never learn the basics of image making because things are so easy these days. You really do like you say need a good foundation to be able to convey a mood or sentiment instead of the latest trend. But I was also taught by older filmmakers that it was important to keep up with the times when I was dubbing tapes all day. This was in the mid 90s and these guys were in their late 50s to early 70s moving their workflow to Avids. It was interesting because I wasn't even an assistant editor but I was teaching them how to use macs, adobe and avid, setting up the computers. These guys were old award winning filmmakers, and it didn't matter to them if it was a flatbed, or tape to tape or a mac they were using as long as they could get the footage they needed and cut it. I remember sitting with them and showing them what the icons meant in Avid and that was it. They were editing tv shows, national spots and films in minutes. They didn't know the shortkeys like I did, but I still can't cut a story like they did back in the day. It showed me that when you master a craft the tools are just that and nothing more. But you need the tools to master that craft, but I think a lot of people are in a rush today because of the nature of how much content is needed and delivered these days, so the focus gets placed more on the means and the trends than on the craft. To me, the most interesting thing to film is a face telling me something, showing me something, an emotion, or hiding something, perhaps a secret. And what do we really need to do that? A decent camera and some lights? Is that it?

  8. I've been waiting for the NAB announcements before purchasing a 4K camera for my anamorphic needs. My BMCC and BMMCC are great but need to be able to scale 4K down to 2K to avoid sacrificing resolution. And personally, I'm not entirely convinced the GH5 is for me. I want ProRes HQ at a minimum. So if BMD doesn't offer up a new compact 4K cinema camera at their press conference tomorrow, I'll likely pick up the old BMPC 4K on ebay. I see them going for as little as $1200. and its 1.7x crop would let me use my Leica 35mm Summicron as a taking lens. damn, now I'm really considering it. Why didn't I think of this sooner?

  10. Hi Timoteo, I have the GH5 and the Speed Booster XL and have used several different lenses with this setup. The GH5 has not seen so much action yet, but that's because it's just in my posession. I have however shot with the GH3 for 4 years and during the first year I have used Samyang / Rokinon (same lenses, different name) extensively. I've owned the 16mm f2.0 /35mm f1.4 / 85mm f1.4. Mind you, I had the 'photo' versions, not the cine versions. Here is a short film I did with those lenses. I was very happy with them and I still have the 85mm f1.4. It's golden for video and I like the long focus throws of the lenses and how they look and feel. I think the only difference between the photo and cine versions is the housing and the focus and aperture rings. You can't go wrong with either I think. The only reason for selling the 16mm and the 35mm is because I mainly shoot weddings now, and I needed a zoom lens for that which became the Sigma 18-35 f1.8. I still use the 85mm often and it's teriffic! https://vimeo.com/79220862

I wasn't the hugest fan of the early Leica stuff. Basically they were Lumix-vibe lenses with sort of a faint Leica hint. But boy, the more recent Leica primes, they look the part, they perform the part. Though... they cost the part. Lol. The 15mm f/1.7 is actually really affordable and super practical, that's something I really like, but the 42.5mm f/1.2 and 12mm f/1.4, argh, bro! I just don't know. Also love the Olympus PRO stuff, but... they are a little bit more on the clinical side, like a Scarlett Johansson cyborg bot, sexy is hell, but if you want some humanization, raw emotion, passion and character... dang, Leica's always been good for that decade after decade!

  15. They are trying to say 'look how small the camera is in relation to the lens'. The bigger the lens, the smaller the camera seems to be. I have no doubt it is a Varicam Lite, S35 EF mount with GH5 headlining features (in terms of resolution/framerates etc) put in a professional body at roughly the launchprice of the DVX200 which was 4195 USD (which is about the same ballpark the JVC GY-LS300 was announced at). They literally positioned it in between the LT and GH5... that was the problem before, where you go from a GH4? Though, it's a shame your whole lens line-up, if that would be MFT alone, would be wasted on this (points for JVC). Then again, you can just get a whole lot more out of S35, which also is the industry standard. As long as it sticks around 5k and has an accessible and affordable eco-system, it would be real nice. Because on the other side you have your URSA Minis, Sony FS cameras, Canon Cx00 range, Kinefinity, 2nd hand RED packages, etc. And that kinda drives you more in the direction of 10k kitted out with a bunch of accessories needed.

Given the decent lowlight performance and high quality noise reduction in the C300 II and 1DX II, the C100 III, with a flip out screen, very low RS, native Canon AF support, and of course, Canon color, perhaps there's not really a letdown the A7S III won't be released any time soon. Probably 8-bit 420 for 4K to differentiate from C300 II 422 10-bit (would think they'd need to release a FW update for the C300 II for 4K60 to offer 4K60 in the C100 III (differentiator would be 10-bit 422 vs. 8-bit 420)).

  22. Wow Hanriverprod you get it. Cool. I guess we grew up in a different era. An era where it was harder I guess to get what you needed. But you still need to do that on top end stuff. I think that is what some people are missing. Sure you don't have to on a GH5, but you will on a Arri, or a Red, or heck even a GH5 on an important shoot. Now true top end cameras have 3, heck 4 people running each camera, but if you are poor, owning one, or renting one You are the one running all of it! It helps to know more about what makes a video camera work than less, if you are serious about them big time in the end. But not everyone wants or needs to go that far, and that is OK. Like I said above, all us are different, and have different outlooks on things. And that is a good thing. Ahh, I forgot to add, yeah this new False Color stuff on these new Monitors is really terrific tool to use. I have got to get one of them. Damn you are costing me money! Oh and yes we all are lucky as heck that is a Lot of decent cameras and cheap LCD lights out there to shoot stuff with. And YouTube and Vimeo to put it up on. Man I wish I was 30 years younger just to be able to take advantage of what the future brings. This was somewhat impossible years ago to do unless you spent a Lot of money on it which I did 20 years ago. Man the money I spent. And it came to no good fruitful output. Shit happens. My daughter has a ton of my old Sony Extended Definition Betamax, top end Pro outdated stuff sitting at her house in California to this day. Not worth giving away now. Well it could still be used but not LoL. We are talking 500 lines of Resolution here! Great stuff in the day. That was up there with DVD's believe it or not which were 480 lines. How things have changed! I think a whole 3 2/3" CCD block was like 1 MP or less then. That is more than it took for 480i. That on paper was good for 720i, they down sampled it if I remember right. Might not have been that high? Long time ago. Sony was Way above the rest back then. Over scan was in then just like now. 6k down to 4k etc.

  24. I tried to mash-up something like that once... Yeah, if only it were that easy... xD They should indeed have some kind of hotshoe on the side, no fuzz with cables either, you just click it in, it locks and feeds it with a video with some kind of interlinked connector. But what a rubbish approach anyways. If they were able to do the BMPCC... can't they just take the GH5 housing and make an epic BMPCC 2.0? With like 2.5 or 4K ProRes/RAW DNG? I'm not sure there's a cinema camera with sensor stabilization, I don't think one will exist for a long long time either. Or here's another mash-up I've thought of: I figured Nikon could enter the APS-C mirrorless market by getting giving the NX1 an update to the Nikon mirrorleX NX2... including vari-angle touchscreen and sensor stabilization! Of course, I'm not opposed to Blackmagic running away with that concept and turning it into a cinema machine! Just, after the BMPCC there weren't really any like stills camera formfactor cinema cameras anymore... everything had to be frankenrigged, and who really wants to deal with that? On the other hand, I do think that BMD received a lot of crap for the BMPCC from people who were total n3wbz and had no idea what the camera actually was. It's just not a Canon Ixus that you point 'n shoot... so like 3DR Solo... I think they are like 'fuck those puny little consumers, let's deal with professionals only... they have deep pockets! And you've got to lure big fish in with big bait!'.

  25. I was just at the Sony press release and spoke to a Sony Rep. there was literally nothing interesting at the press release. I told the rep I was hoping for a Sony a9s and he asked me why? I told him it's because I want Slog and better video features. He then asked me "why why don't you just get an a7S II?" I said I want phase detect autofocus and the better battery. He then said "well you're going to have to wait a long time." conclusion: nothing new here. Looks like we will wait at least another 6 months before we see anything. At least I got a free cookie.

  26. I have the GH4. Tell you what, I like the G80 better. The G80 is more like a mini GH5 getting you 90% there at more than 50% off. Compared to the 3 years old GH4 it is so much more satisfying to work with for both process and results. Like the guys before me already said, the GH4 doesn't have scope/waveforms and it's silly to demand that out of a camera... or the operator. Most of it is overkill for most people anyways. Hell, you can let me shoot on film on a Panaflex Millennium XL2, give me a RED Weapon Helium, Sony F35 or ARRI Alexa SXT EV to shoot with and I would have no idea what the hell I'm supposed to do with that. A camera having or not having certain features doesn't mean anything without context and purpose. And then there's the subjectivity of an opinion or something even intangible like how the whole thing 'feels'. There's no definite right or wrong... after all: 'it depends'. For me, the G80 is awesome to work with, hasn't got anything to do with automatism. I usually go for manual settings with manual focus. I do go for handheld a lot, like quite a few of us we're roughly just one-man-bands doing a lot of stuff out in the real world opposed to studios. Sure you can carry a tripod with you at all times, but even with a fluidhead... the camera pivots around a stationary position. Movies are also called 'motion pictures', so there's a lot to say about the inclusion of motion and if you use lenses like SLR Magic, Voigtländer, cinema primes like the Veydra Minis or adapt third party lenses that you speedboost, you will know how to appreciate the sensor stabilization! Of course if you want to edit static shots together, that's one creative choice that can be made, but don't be so rash as to dismiss other approaches one might take either. There's no denying the GH4 is still a great tool for productivity, but it certainly isn't the end-all. Especially if you're just starting out, you really want to go for a 3 years old camera because it has some features that could benefit productivity, but you might likely not be using? Especially if your focus and passion lies with the creative aspect of storytelling and not the technical aspect of filmmaking. Btw, the G80 is a technical masterpiece in its own right, really. It has build upon the generations that came after the GH4... G7, GX80/85, GX8, so it's really up to snuff. Again, no absolute right or wrongs here and no need to get worked up over nothing, would be sad to see someone go for no good reason! Just take a sec... a nice cold brewski a good night's sleep and put it behind you and let's move on together to new and better discussions!

  27. Started with a mobile, then a Panny TZ30 and for two years the wonderful Panny FZ200 - everything on auto for a year because I enjoyed capturing and editing, not knowing or caring for exposure or colour or audio. If it isn't fun, it won't matter what you use. Technical stuff can sap the life out of some people (like me) but can inspire others. So advising newcomers as to what camera to buy is not an exact science.

  28. The NX1 has pretty terrible noise reduction going on above 1000/1600 ISO, no idea why they implemented it, its not there in the NX500 for some reasons and even high bitrate wont really solve your ISO issue on the NX1 although regarding the NX500 even though it has no noise reduction even at 4k or 1080p, when you start hitting high ISO specially above 3200ISO its just a mess really, avoid that. And yes you can update the lenses with the custom hacked firmware, the lens firmware is separated from the camera itself, its two different things so it wont harm your camera or anything. ---------------------------------------------------------- All this camera talk over the past 2 years has made me realise that specs really does not mean a jack shit these days, as long as it shoots acceptable video its good enough, the NX1 not just shoots acceptable video it shoots SUPERB video, at least for me. The colour profiles are all like their own film stock and remember that film stocks did not have amazing dynamic range in the past either unless you specifically picked one that did. I been spending more on audio equipment lately and as the professionals always use to say, audio is far more important than the image, I think the NX1 will do me very good for another 7 years or even more, its a little shame I cannot get that extra dynamic range or better ISO performance but you know, for what I spent on the camera which was under 2000 dollars was far less than the Canon 70D or the Sony A7s at the time which was very expensive cameras. The GH4 has smaller sensor so does the GH5 and the GH5 suffers a lot in low light situations still, you need really fast glass for it. Sometimes one just cannot have it all I guess, shame that Samsung officially ended their camera line though, I hope the hacking continues there definitely FAR more potential on the Samsung cameras than the Canon ones in obtaining superb quality video, and even now the Magic Lantern guys have got 4k from their canon cameras, that is amazing if only we too could have RAW video from the Samsung, it would have solved the dynamic range issue and ISO issue. Heck even MJPEG would have, I sort of see why Canon went with MJPEG on the Canon 4DMIV. I plan on hiring someone in the future to at least try to hack it for raw video, but until now I am just going to keep saving, it costs quite a lot to hire someone who know how to work their way around these things, in fact I wonder why we have not gotten together to start a funding page to hire a group to hack the camera to begin with, it would been so more effective, if everyone donated 10 dollars there still would have been quite a lot.

Hey, This update(audio, plugins and stabilizer improvement) is great and all. But I am really bummed out about the price drop from $999 to $299 for Resolve Studio version. I mean the resale value just dropped massively. I own 2 davinci dongles, and this hurts my wallet big time! After walking arround with the Summilux 15, I would buy the Summilux 12 in an instant as soon as we have something like the GX80/G85 mark II that allows the lossless ETC crop also in 4k. This, a mic-in and weathersealing for both lens and body seems like the almost perfect kit for hiking / backpacking / traveling whatsoever. The tools are nowadays incredible cheap for what they offer. Now imagine that Sony or Panasonic would integrate such a thing as the Techart Autofocus Adapter within their bodies... you might call that our heaven!

  38. Usability, compact size. But I'm also just bias towards Iscoramas. Although wish it could be improved like closer focus distance. Other than, it's sharp enough for my liking. How much sharpness is too much for an anamorphic lens. Might be off topic but just saw single focus solution adapter on eBay. Curious if anyone has any feedback on this. 41. FE is locked by Sony I get it, but I can't figure out why nobody can come with an open standard mount for mirrorless that supports FF lenses. It is very sad to see companies like BM & Panasonic use almost archaic DSLR mounts only because there is no other available mount, which restricts both the number of lenses that can be adapted and the usefulness of speed boosters. In my opinion JVC ls300 at least tried, even if that meant breaking the m4/3 standard. Still far more useful than an EF mount.

  43. Noone is talking about the next Varicam Mini Light Micro (my trademark!) that is about to released in Autumn. This is the most exciting news so far, an advanced S35 video camera with the internals of the GH5 (I hope) and most of the goodies of the FS5/C100 form factor. I hope that will push Canon (probably not) to reconsider the updates for the C100markIII...and Canon just announced the CN-E 70-200, which in the end, is going to be a big deal for many (and me included, in case of a worthy C100iii). The Sound Devices announcements are exciting too, I just can't believe people in sound forums complain about some lack in features and build quality, like Sound Devices line up starts and finishes with these cute entry level models. People want a combination of these and 633 for the price of MixPre3!!! Just can't believe how people thing (same goes for GH5 complainers and in other circumstances). We just can't jump from G to P, with the price of D! DJI Ronin 2 and a few huge monitors here and there. It seems that companies are announcing products whenever through the year.

  46. I'd guess that image was taken with a f-stop above 8? Looks like maybe something as high as a f16? When in doubt I shoot more open on the f-stop (using ND if you have to) and the dust particles won't "resolve" onto the image (as much). Since, when traveling, I'm shooting video most of the time run 'n gun style and also swapping lenses, I default to using f2-f4 as a "safety" to avoid any aggressive dust issues I may be unaware of. It hides the problem.
