  1. EOSHD is not an odd case, nearly all the major sites are named after cameras: DVXUser - Panasonic DVX100 Cinema5D - Canon 5D Mark II REDUser - RED This isn't really how it works with most people, as they come from a Google search and click the article because it's relevant to them - i.e. Sony or Panasonic posts. So it is immediately apparent both the blog and forum cover non-Canon gear. Times change and Canon might bounce back and start dominating. So changing to align with current Sony/Panasonic trends may be a waste of time as brands have to live forever. Reidvision wouldn't be so bad but it says nothing about 'cameras' I like short and snappy! Thanks for the feedback though I do see where you're coming from Most important thing for me is the site works well, looks clean, no shitty advertising, thriving community forum, great content, strong personal opinions, not in bed with PR industry.

  2. You can't just put the GH5 into a bigger body, slap a huge price on it and call it a day. I mean, you have the XLR unit for on top of your GH5 now and can use the Aputure DEC vND EF-mount as well. BOOM! Done. They also can't create a Varicam LT with the exact same specs in half the size and price. But to give it some proper production value the S35 is just about a must. It will especially help to more easily get some great dynamic range and lovely colors going for it, the thing we all expect to see out of a camera like that. Of course, it would also be one less reason for people to look at other cameras that are in fact S35, which kinda is the production standard. Should help with the crop and in turn to easier establish a shallower depth of field as well I guess (nice with S35/APS-C lenses, but I do see an issue here if it does in fact come with a native EF-mount, because... how are we supposed to speedboost fullframe lenses then??? So yeah, seems to me it makes more sense to bring out cameras with the shallowest mount possible for most flexibilty, E-mount would be ideal here, since that even adapts MFT, but you know...). So... I think dynamic range & color science is what people will really appreciate. Other than that, just to have something that's all-in-1 and covers the basic conveniences such as ND filters (evND?), XLR interface, more controls, awesome flip-out screen, long battery life, ability to run it offa external power, things like that. No more frankensteining with little cages and coldshoe mounts, external monitors, magic arms, ballheads and cable jungle. Just drop it on a tripod and hit record. Speaking of which... for a recording media it might be interesting to pull a Videodevices on this... see, they have the PIX-E5 recorder and use a so-called 'SpeedDrive'. They will sell you empty enclosures which house a mSATA drive and functions as a USB3.0 thumbdrive. You can buy like a Samsung 850 EVO 250GB mSATA drive for about 100,-. You'd just pop it in your camera and once you're done: fuzzless and speedy offloading onto a computer. The mentioned Samsung mSATA drive is rated at 520MB/s writespeed. Should be no problem for high-bitrate recording anything I imagine. Concerning that, I'm guessing this will write away files similar to the GH5, but can do it all internally. So... you get that 4:2:2 10-bit 60p at 400Mbps and FHD slow-mo at up to 180fps. The big difference? It would additionally support RAW output to an external recorder, though it would of course be great if they could manage that internally or give us internal ProRes. Just... probably not. Anyways. Legit reasons to get one, but no groundbreaking ones. It wouldn't really be innovative or do mind-boggling things. But it would be a superb step-up for people with GH-range cameras. Because that's always been the question... where do you go from a GH-camera? But then it all comes down to pricing... they're not suddenly going to sell a ton of these if they're exactly in the range of Blackmagic/Sony/Canon/Kinefinity/2nd hand RED/etc... these are systems that will get you far north of $5k, more like 10k once you're fully configured and accessorized. If it does nothing that hasn't been done before... why bother at all? That's where the price comes in. If you're a small production house, maybe just a single dude or dudette doing his/her thing, 10k is quite a stretch to up your productions from the GH5 to something with a little more oomph. It's far more likely to get people looking for a step-up from their GH-range camera interested in something like a JVC GY-LS300 or something 2nd hand perhaps. But... if you can get a camera as described above... for a little bit more than say the launchprice of the LS300 or DVX200, so perhaps 4995,- then I forsee a bright future for it. So for me, I'd be pretty stoked to see, whilst being fairly realistic about it: S35 sensor with great dynamic range and color science a fairly compact professional body with ND filters, XLR interface, plenty of controls and easy navigation/menus GH5 resolution/framerates, all capable of being recorded internally RAW output $4999 Like an AG-AF100 successor with 2017-like Panasonic specs. A mash-up of things I like about the JVC LS300 & Panasonic DVX200/GH5/AF100. Not a hardcore cinema camera, more something to use as a production camera, where the GH5 would start to feel a little out of its element. Still great options with the GH5, though. And it does have that 5-axis B.I.S. and all that good stuff that makes it the most perfect B-cam. They should compliment eachother rather well. Should this come in at 6999-9999, well... tough...

  3. I took my XC10 on hols with me to Bali and took it out for an hour or so on a few different occasions. Here's the first of those: I shot in EOS Standard for all of the usual reasons and graded it with a custom LUT designed to simulate Ektar 100 film. Stuck a bit of grain on there as well, which kind of survived the vimeo compression but not quite. This was HD - I'm impressed again by the files in terms of their gradeability... as long as the ISO is low, which it was here. I have another video coming up with some nasty high ISO stuff!

  8. You guys don't seem to understand branding. You can't just throw something away you've spent the last 6 years building and people trust the name. I happen to like "EOSHD" as being a camera and video associated acronym you immediately know what the website is about and everybody has heard of "EOS" in relation to cameras. If you want to read your own meaning into it you can, it can stand for Electro Optical Super High Definition. If I'd taken advice from a couple of people it would be LumixHD by now... Meh Cinema4K would be too generic and AndrewReid dot com is taken by someone else so I am sticking to my guns!!

  9. Dave thanks for the info, don't mind these pricks... they know not what they do. Everything you've mentioned seems very plausible, Canon is known for their tier system. They also believe 4K is not the be all end all for all shooters, so it would make sense that they retire the C100, drop the C100ii price, and bring the C200 in at the original C100ii MSRP. Thanks again, can't wait for Cinegear.

  11. I don't see it that way. To me, they are entirely different products and Panasonic should always have both in their arsenal. GH5 is much smaller to carry around. Handy for certain situations. Not to mention some of us actually rely on taking stills with our GH4/GH5s, shocking as that may seem! Larger camera is more appropriate for other situations. Honestly I would want both if I could afford. Especially if they matched in look easily.

  12. The terra 6k is shipping, ready to buy... The thing with the 5k is the same that got us exited about ursa mini at launch: global shutter. And really and cannot stress this enough: it IS handhold able, not shoulder mount heavy, handhold heavy, size wise is close to a 5d (remember the revolution the 5d II made? It wasn't only the price and sensor size, it was also the possibility of using it in your hand in thight spaces, the combination of size, weight, image quality). And ssd as record media, from them or other vendors.

  13. For pros turning jobs around FCPX is the bees knees. It's the Canon of the NLE world in many ways - easy to get snobby about its tech specs but in real world use its super reliable, straightforward to use and performs fantastically where it matters. For factual content and solo filmmakers it's a dream. The filmmakers you see using it are the ones consistently putting out content, not those dissecting the latest greatest tech. Its fast, gets out of your way and lets you focus on the storytelling. Nobody should be writing it off as a top contender for any reason now, especially not solo filmmakers.

  14. Yeah the new Blackmagic Video Assist firmware adds a Lot of nice things to it. Has to be my new pick. I need the SDI inputs, so even the 5" one works for me. https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/media/release/20170424-04

  15. I've been using resolve on and office the last 6 months - I definitely think it's better than Premiere (which I find to feel a bit ancient in terms of it's usability and UI). I saw in your post you haven't tried FCPX in a few years.... do you know the version available today is much much much better now? Give it a whirl! I like the way Resolve is evolving and some of the features are unique (grading, audio editing, CDNG), however because I find FCPX so much faster and enjoyable to edit with (like the Magnetic Timeline 2) - when I edit wth Resolve I really miss the modern fluidity you get with FCPX. Resolve really needs more plugin support from third parties, plus a few cool tricks on timeline editing to challenge FCPX's "scary at first, but really awesome new way of editing". That said, Blackmagic are probably the most interesting and exciting video/film industry product company in the world right now. Top job.

  16. I'm not sure why some were expecting to see an A7Siii or equivalent at NAB. Traditionally, NAB has always been more geared to broadcasters and not where you expect to see premieres of enthusiast/prosumer/consumer equipment. I'm sure Sony is still working on their overheating issues and until they come up with a solution, it will be tough for them to compete with the GH5 on video features. They certainly can't introduce usable 4K60p until the overheating of 4K30p is solved.

  17. I got another reason to dump Adobe. There's a bug in the newest version where it'll delete all of your media files on the drive with the media cache folder. Happened to me on one drive. Assumed the drive was going bad, so I brought a new one. Moved the media cache folder to a different drive, and it happened on that one! Folder structure stays intact but files get deleted. Lots 2+ TB of data in both cases. Luckily I was able to get it all back with recovery software, but the time it takes to transfer/format etc.... I mean, good god. https://forums.adobe.com/thread/2306406

  19. Another battery test: Panasonic 2:18 Kastar 0:58, 1:16 Power2000 1:24 BatteryPack 1:34 Wasabi - 2:19 So it looks like Wasabi has won the after-market battery competition. I also note that when going onto the charger it starts from 20% not 40% like the others. So it gets flatter while maintaining an operating voltage to the camera.

  20. This is a little footage I shoot without the Anamorphic lens on it. First try on the way to the Grand Canyon. iPhone 6s plus, 4k, with OIS on. No Gimbal. This is one using the Came TV Gimbal without the Anamorphic lens. 4k, Jerome, Arizona. That is what a Saguaros Cactus skeleton looks like! I think that is the species? I think the colors out of a iPhone are just scary good. They are sort of a miracle. But my old Samsung Note 4 in 4k was good also. I Highly recommend using Mobile Phones for Video!

  21. This is pretty cool: the OFX plugin architecture used by Resolve (and other high-end tools) is relatively simple and clean (unlike Adobe AE/PP, which is a unfortunately a mess (at this point, disaster is perhaps a more accurate description)). Third-party developers can have empathy for Adobe's in-house developers who have to work on the core product: it's no wonder there are so many bugs and development progress is slow. For years I had asked for example HW acceleration examples from Adobe which show a basic plugin which can directly access GPU memory, run GPU code, then store the result in GPU memory. All that was ever provided was a pointer to ancient/obsolete code which used OpenGL, and required copying the video frame from CPU RAM to GPU RAM and back (which makes the whole thing just about worthless). In 5 minutes of googling I found an example OFX plugin which does everything I had asked: processes everything from GPU RAM (no copies to CPU RAM and back), has complete examples for both OpenGL and CUDA, and the overall code is clean and relatively simple. Very cool! https://github.com/baldavenger/SoftClipV2.1/blob/master/SoftClipPluginV2.1.cpp . https://github.com/baldavenger/SoftClipV2.1. This is exactly what I'd found for plugin development for AE/PP: https://www.eehelp.com/question/gpu-accelerated-the-development-of-ae-premiere-pro-plugin/ (bold emphasis mine): This is a joke, and explains why third party plugins for Premiere never ran anywhere near as fast as Adobe's internal plugins/effects. Premiere and After Effects are at least 10 years past due for a complete rewrite. It's kind of impressive they've kept it clunking along all these years, however they'd be better off (if they haven't already started) doing a from-scratch rewrite, just like Apple did with FCPX. Maybe even switch over to OFX for plugins/extensions. Keep the clunky version of AE/PP around while the new version is beta released and developers port their code over to OFX (unless it's somehow possible to make a compatibility layer and load old plugins (probably not worth it given the ancient convoluted design)).

    Canon XC10 4K camcorder

Yes, EOS Standard is one of the ready to go profiles but it has the least heavy noise reduction applied to it. I've successfully matched it to C-Log and Magic Lantern Log, so I can use a range of luts on it. Not sure what the second part of your post is asking? XC10 has a smaller sensor than M43 and its high ISO performance is not as good as the cameras you list. The XC10 image begins to deteriorate noticeably from 800 and starts to be problematic at 1600. Add a slow lens into the equation = camera always needs light.

  26. Well word on the DVXuser Forums is it is not going to be a standout on much of anything. I think it will be nice, but more of a C100ish camera. That maybe a hard thing to beat out, a C100, and a FS5. I mean I am using a AF100A and loving it, but... I see no way they can sell a camera above the cost of 5000 bucks. Maybe they will surprise us with some new things, I hope so. I am a Big Panny fan. I know I am not alone on here LoL. But I know it will maybe out of my reach money wise. I don't see how they can top your FS5 for close to the same money. But we will know soon enough I guess. This thing maybe cheap as hell and be a JVC LS300 competitor?? Who knows. It makes more sense to me. I think there is a void in that segment. You get up into 7, 8 grand you might as well buy a used Red, a used C300 mk something!

  27. No...an m4/3 mount will cover the sensor...difficult to see them supporting the EF mount...especially if they're going after the 100-300 series canons and the Sony fs series...I thought your article on what the camera should/might be spot on...and I agree on price....people are dreaming if they think a 4000 camera.... but what Panasonic will do, as they did with the Varicam, is they'll blast completely past the price point on the camera image wise...as they did with the Varicam LT...Panny seems to take a longer view with their cameras...

  28. Well I will admit Red was just about as bad or worse for how long it drug out. Like I said before on here I actually had a deposit on the original Red One for over 9 months. I just gave up on it ever happening. Jannard was, and is a nice guy, but the Red One was vaporware for hell nearly for 2 years. So I got my deposit back. I just gave up at that point. Worked out I guess, what I was going to use it for fell through, so... Startup stuff Does take time, but the Terra seems to be REALLY taking their time. This is at least their 3rd NAB.

  29. Hence the 'but you know...', you know. Though the argument for a native EF mount is pretty weak and mine was more illustrating the fact a shallower mount is more flexible. Now we even have Kinefinity releasing an E-mount adapter for their system, you know. Not sure if the diameter of the MFT imposes a restriction on lenses that even do cover APS-C, but anyways, there's very shallow adapters for m4/3 - E-mount, non exist the other way around... so, that's still a thing.

  31. It is quite hard for a new companies to come up with an actually usable product. Look at how long it has taken AXIOM to come up with one. How many years did it take BM to be able to ship bug-free cameras within a reasonable time frame and offer semi-decent support? And the competition in this tiny market is pretty hard, just look how quickly Samsung left the market or the exit of Digital Bolex. If we want to see better & more competitive cameras at lower price points (even from big players) then new camera companies need even more support from the community and certainly not bashing. Sure if you plan for a shoot now, buying a Terra does not make sense since it is not immediately available and if something goes wrong it might have to go roundtrip to China. But vaporware? Hell no. Look at all the footage from people actually using the camera. vaporware: software or hardware that has been advertised but is not yet available to buy, either because it is only a concept or because it is still being written or designed

  33. Nothing can beat FCPX for me. So easy and fast to do what I want. Time remapping is the best of any software and I use time remapping all the time. Who cares about Native lut support when you just need Color Finale the best grading tool ever with way better integration of LUT management than Premiere native shit. I am not saying Resolve is shit. I used FCPX then switched to Premiere for the After effects integration. Switched back recently to FCPX and it's just that much better. Tried the last year Resolve for a project. It did not work for me

  39. I just fancy the monitor. I looked at the BMA a few months ago but couldn't justify it for my needs. £400 for a bright, lightweight five inch monitor with waveform and focus assist is what I am considering as it looks handy for macro video with its articulating arm. Bit of a nightmare using the screens on my Sonys in bright sunshine and my recent GX80 is even worse. Squinting through the EVF whilst lying prostate is equally impractical. I'll be waiting on thorough reviews first, though. The low price has made me suspicious.

Others have intriguing patterns that might look cool in fantasy-based things. And some are just plain weird looking, but what the heck...give them a look. 43. Can't see this camera under $5000...so no issue with GH5 buyers...the difference between spending say $2000 and 5000, is the difference between buying a camera or not...and that goes for most GH5 buyers...there are however a lot of GH5 buyers who recognized the completely ridiculous value they got in the GH5 for $2000...those who have never shot on a GH4, would not!...it suits their work needs so why not...you could shoot a low budget feature with it providing you have producer control, but this next camera will be better suited for that....not in terms of image, but in terms of usability....though the GH series cameras are easy to operate, nothing beats the simplicity of an Arri/Varicam style camera for shooting day in and day out....12 to 16 hours a day and repeat for 6 weeks or more....oh....and m4/3 mount on variable s35 sensor is of course the answer to everybody's lens needs....and it will probably have no EVF....so you can pair it with any number of 3rd party EVF's too...the Varicam is equally modular...
