The hololens is super cool, we have one at work, but honestly it was a little disappointing the first time I played with it; the "window" of holograms that you get to see projected in front of you is just quite small, I'd say maybe a 10 or 20%-sized box of your vision? I don't know, it's certainly not as cool as the promotional material seems to indicate though. Yes you can plan Minecraft on your kitchen tabletop or whatever, but still, only in that tiny box. It is pretty neat how it literally looks like a hologram floating in front of you though. The resolution isn't amazing yet either, so I'm not sure how great the current headset would be for actual editing, needing high-res, etc. As far as an immersive, futuristic experience, I was much more impressed by the HTC Vive, which is only $800 compared to $3,000 for the Hololens. Either way, it'll be very interesting to see what kind of tech and gadgets comes out of this segment as it matures. Just imagine the shenanigans the next generation of kids is going to get caught doing by their parents!3 points

"Dies Somnum" 6K Anamorphic GH5 vid
Neumann Films and 2 others reacted to mercer for a topic
Hey Luke, just watched this video again and I must say I may be more impressed than the first viewing. Were your opening shots a time lapse or were they done in post? Also... any chance you and the wife would consider making a director's commentary for this video... would love to know the details.3 points -
Just... people have been begging for high-res and keep hammering down footage has to be sharp and detailed. Yet... they end up loving soft smeary Canons. I takes getting used to. Also, you need to know your camera and grading, you can't just buy an exceptional camera and expect yourself to become exceptional by ownership of said camera and get stunning results. It's all in the lensing, lighting, motion and what's in front of the camera. You use it as a point-n-shoot camera? You'll get point-n-shoot results. The quality of results is enhanced by the quality it shoots in. Miss an inch of focus on a GH5 and it's cringe, because it's so noticeable. Do the same with a Canon and you can hardly tell, because it hardly resolves with the same kind of precision. Don't know if a lot of footage out there is from people new to the system, being done with either Canon or Sony, or upgraders from previous iterations of Lumix G cameras. The former group probably still struggles, the latter should in meanwhile know how to make it work by now. Noticed Albert got himself one! Now that will be an exciting channel to check back to if you like nice looking footage! That last shot is so dope!2 points

A fullframe lens covers a fullframe 35mm sensor with the image circle it gives off (APS-C/MFT would vignette on FF). Why put it on there? Like I said: It probably is an EF mount, not definitely, but I would say highly likely so. Wouldn't be a fullframe sensor, though. The Panasonic Varicam LT has both EF and PL-mount options, has a S35 sensor. It's the industry standard for this type of production camera. A shallower mount however, like MFT or Sony FZ/E-mount would be more flexible, something I mentioned earlier as well. It would allow for the most adapting flexibility... and most importantly, it would allow for fullframe lenses to be squished onto the S35 sensor when using focal reducers... something you can't do for example with that Sigma Art 24-35mm f/2 lens on an EF-mount. Because there's no such thing as an EF to EF focal reducer (yet?).2 points -
Better then iscorama 36?
keessie65 and one other reacted to Ian Edward Weir for a topic
Unfortunately I have never owned an Iscorama 36. The Bolex is sharper and then the Kowa C35 is sharper then that. Isco with warm flares and Bolex with purple and blue and Kowa has blue and magenta. All are good for different projects. There is no perfect lens, which is why most people have multiple. Cooke? Hard to let them go. Your set up looks like it's easy to use and provides a lovely filmic looking image on a digital camera. What else could you want2 points -
I'm sorry to hear that, Jon! No 4G cell phone carriers there? All the best, E :-) Here's the thread on topic: From the GH5 AF complex system, I wouldn't find that even a trouble. There are workarounds, as possible to check it out. Just find them out. :-)2 points

Definitely the GH5 footage I was looking for...... Greta location. Art Design and "Mood" created. Watching on a 2.5k Monitor and looks LOVELY, very good job and definitely would recommend this camera based off of this footage (if this is any indication of what is capable , Panasonic has something Special here).2 points -
Tested on the Win10Pro 6950X 64GB GTX 1080 machine: easily ran real-time with both C300 II and 1DX II 4K footage, along with transitions and some titles. Added 4 OpenFX effects to a C300 II 4K clip: Light Rays, Glow, Gaussian Blur, and Prism Blur (in addition to ARRI 3D LUT and basic curves/grading)- still ran easily in real-time (as one would expect with efficiently implemented GPU acceleration; CPU was at 23%). Rendering speed: 1080p render from mixed 1080 4K timeline 1m:40s long finished in 38s, about 2.6x real-time, which is pretty good. Similar test on OSX with 12-Core and GTX 980ti in PP CC was about 2x real-time for 1080p output. Would be nice to know how to replicate Lumetri effects in Resolve (really fast and easy to quickly grade footage using Lumetri). Audio isn't quite done: As noted by someone else in this thread, I had to set my default/system audio device sample rate to 48KHz otherwise no audio output (including strangely the rendered output). Where are all the audio effects hidden? Poked around briefly and only found EQ and Dynamics (which doesn't appear to actually work (correctly) yet). Also no way to select audio device (checking/unchecking Use System Audio didn't do anything). Tested again on the 2010 MacPro 12-Core (3GHz) GTX 980ti in bootcamp/Win10Pro. Can handle C300 II 4K 10-bit up to about 3 tracks at once (2 50% opacity tracks on top of a base track). Only 2 tracks for real-time, so transitions are good. At 3 tracks, it's not real-time and audio starts to sound shabby. Thus it's clear in this case that the OSX version is slower in software/drivers, since it runs faster in Windows on the same hardware. Overall excellent progress!2 points

In my experience the Zuiko 25mm F1.2 was a bit soft when the focus was far (in case of full body portraits) but otherwise it was very sharp with pleasing soft micro contrast that is especially useful for portraits. If you have the time, it could be very helpful if you could post two full body or close to full body portait photos with both lenses wide open.1 point

Wouldn´t guess, people sayin that about the GH cameras. People have always been exited about the image quality. Some like Panasonic the best, some Sony, a lot of them like Canon, at least for the colors:). Different tastes. But there are hundred times more people liking GHs and G7,8,85 for what they are, low price cams with some of the best image quality of its range. Too bad, Panasonic has lost love for HD quality in their GX85 and possibly G85 cameras. Here are two examples what a GH3 was and still is capable of. For the Mekka music video, I don´t dig the prologue with the icecream shop, but the rest looking awesome.1 point

+1 if you can't make the GH5 or the A6500 or practically anything going back a couple of years work and produce something beautiful, learning something about cameras and how to use them would be probably the next order of business...getting the camera is of course the first step and writing nonsense on a forum has never landed a minute of footage on either the big or small screen...just because one reads a term on the internet (say cinematic...yawn) it does not mean you know what that is....getting out there and working with a camera and creating projects can only improve things...or of course one can simply land up with some or more of the same crap everyone sees on YouTube....hey...if it was easy, everyone would be doing it so don't feel bad??1 point -
Sony A6500 or Panasonic GH5...?
IronFilm reacted to Oliver Daniel for a topic
In 2017, it's definitely not the camera. It's the user. All of them can deliver great results, if you make it so. I've seen A6300 footage which at first sight I though was RED footage (these users happen to be very skilled). The GH5 will have crap loads of poor footage out there. It's price is very accessible and amateurs will be pushing around Vlog like you would an elderly person on the edge of a cliff. The GH5 in great hands will be a monster. I'm absolutely astounded by the 4k image from the A6500. I shot a paid music video project using only the A6500 and the 18-105 f4 in autofocus and absolutely no other gear at all (to see what would happen). I think you need to put the camera (and yourself) under pressure, it forces better results. This video might be out this week.1 point -
Sony A6500 or Panasonic GH5...?
tweak reacted to Dimitris Stasinos for a topic
I am trying desperately to like gh5. It's specs fits my needs, in some cases they exceed them. I am scanning YT for days, seeings clips from early owners, i graded some downloadable files my self and i think it is time to stop. I have seen great little movies and single shots from cameras like NX1, A6300-500, even RX10 & RX100 but every time i am watching a GH5 clip these days, (i will say it, don't start throwing rocks at me...) ALL i am seeing is crashed blacks, stuttery motion, & ugly sharp edges on dogs, girlfriends & trees. I kinda liked Luke's footage so let's say that this is a little gem that many hobbyists can afford but a few of them can make art with it (and these guys will buy it next month), so you know nothing until you get your hands on it. But this is weird...It was only a month after RX10 ii's release when i saw some clips on YT that blew my mind, and that was a camera aimed at less experienced users. I won't say that in my hands this camera will sing, but cmon....i am the only one that doesn't see anything cinematic in this YT early GH5 garbage cluster?1 point -

jonpais reacted to webrunner5 for a topic
Nice work Jon. I can see the Olympus is a bit sharper, more natural coloring, but you are right, 900 bucks for a stop, little sharpness, I would have to give the nod to the Sigma for sure, unless money is no object. But the stop better for low light, and the better DoF isolation is probably worth it. Two big failings of m4/3 helped by this one lens alone. DR, well that is another problem on it's own.1 point -
It defintely is. As far as I know Panasonic lowered the sharpening and nr in the GH5, so shooting with a non native lens with sharpening at -5 should be close to almost no sharpening at all. Have to try it out when I switch (if I switch, otherwise: BM Ursa Mini Pro, which doesn't show any nasty processing, which makes the picture thin and digital)1 point

What about wide open or from F1.2 to F1.8, is the Sigma just as sharp as the Olympus at 1.4 and what about vignetting ? The T-stop is 1.6 for Sigma vs Olympus 1.8 (in contrast the 250 bucks Sony FE 1.8 has the same 1.8 t-stop), but i guess it would be difficult for you to test that since the focal lenght is a bit different. I actually like the colours from Olympus more than the Sigma from your video, but i will get the Sigma if it's as sharp as Oly + it's actually a bit better in low light.1 point

This however seems to be the fullframe 24-35mm f/2: http://www.sigma-global.com/en/lenses/cas/product/art/a_24_35_2/ . Without a modded mount. So either the mount is fixed EF. EF speedboosted or hot-swappable with other mount plates.1 point -
Inspiring. Looks pretty simple. Most of the time, the horizontal rod lies just loosely on his shoulder. Makes me think of the big box full of cheap rig parts I've gathered over the years (parts from India or China). The AF even in that video compared to the Sony stuff shows it's still pretty behind. Maybe if they tweak the algorithms a bit they can improve it. The Sony is really smooth whereas the Panny stuff is kind of abrupt, especially when it does the in and out when it finds focus. The Sony of course is not god like all the time, especially at night, but when it works, it works so well you don't even notice it, whereas with the Panasonic you can tell the camera is doing something.1 point -

It is amazing to me to this day how a nobody company has a better, cheap ass camera, than a lot of the big boys high end stuff! It's crazy, and I think I am crazy for not buying a MFT BMCC. I Need to do it. You made sort of along the same good choice on buying the Canon 5D mkIII. I guess Raw is the magic bullet, the thing we are striving for. Not really 8k, but we know what I am taking about. It is the creamy, film, butter smooth look that has captivated millions of people, us, down the road. It is not Star Wars 20 in 8k, it is the 40's, 50's, 60's look that make the hair on your arms stand up, that a piss ass cheap BMPCC can give us. Damn, all I can say is Damn, you are right about that video when I look at it again. Keen eye. Glenn you are right, great stuff. BM knows Video, they do. The problem with the Varicam was the blown out highs... but a lot of the cameras have that problem in that test. I think Red sort of overcharges for Everything but the Brains they sell LoL. I guess as small of company they are they have to make money some place. But I believe their Brains are really not too far off the mark for the technology they R&R into them. For a little company they do come out with some amazing tech. Really more so than Sony, Canon when you think about it. Only Arri, and well Panavision who is really using Red stuff, but I give them credit for the relationship they have with Red, are making breakthrough stuff it seems to me. Sony, Canon seem to have the tech at the start in a camera and just keep unlocking a little bit of it at a time, which Pisses me off big time, while Red, BM go balls to the wall at the roll out! It seems to me that Red along with Blackmagic are the ones that are pushing space age stuff out the door, not the big boys like you would think. I am amazed what BM particularly brings out. Man I bet that is a fun place to work at. And Jannard at Red, well l know he is a nice person, and a real innovator. I bet not too many people know, but Jim Jannard was the founder, owner of Oakley Sunglasses. And he wanted a better video camera, and hell he started his own company Red, and made it happen. I do correction with the native tools first (I especially love the 3 saturation sliders for darks, mids and lights 0 Colour Finale can't even do that). Then I use Color Finale (largely just for the curves and often the awesome vector tool to grade and Film Convert last for final touches. I do think Apple should add curves to the native tools though. I've been using resolve on and office the last 6 months - I definitely think it's better than Premiere (which I find to feel a bit ancient in terms of it's usability and UI). I saw in your post you haven't tried FCPX in a few years.... do you know the version available today is much much much better now? Give it a whirl! I like the way Resolve is evolving and some of the features are unique (grading, audio editing, CDNG), however because I find FCPX so much faster and enjoyable to edit with (like the Magnetic Timeline 2) - when I edit wth Resolve I really miss the modern fluidity you get with FCPX. Resolve really needs more plugin support from third parties, plus a few cool tricks on timeline editing to challenge FCPX's "scary at first, but really awesome new way of editing". That said, Blackmagic are probably the most interesting and exciting video/film industry product company in the world right now. Top job.1 point -
