Here are some 1080 JPEGS from a music video that I shot with the GH5 + SLR Magic anamorphic primes.

Well it depends really... I've watched hundreds of YouTube videos but most of them aren't good apart from the likes of Neumannfilms or setup videos. I have the GH5 and I think it's the best m4/3 and one of the best hybrids. Is it great a blogging? Probably not as AF is the most important part ( and not IQ). But if you like more the documentary style it's amazing. Versatile, small, lots of functions and feature, great IQ and excellent handling. Also in stills it's a great camera. I used the GH4 before and it sucked in stills due to the horrible AF. Now the GH5 is a relief, nearly as good as the EM1 MKII and with the 300mm F4 you're now able to successful catch birds in flight. Also the 6k Photo mode is very useful. And one of the most underrated points of the GH5 is the heavily improved image quality and colors. So, I really like the GH5 - it's a massive improvement from the GH4 in stills and movie. B

As for the video, the Ursa is obviously a step above the GH5(as expected), but I could get the two to match reasonably well in situations where I needed the GH5's smaller size/weight. Mercer, as good as the IBIS was in the G85 (I had it), the GH5's IBIS is even better. I'm not sure if actual physical changes were made to the IBIS or whether it's simply the fact that a larger camera is easier to hold steady. Either way, the IBIS is an incredible pleasure for hand-holding stability.

I was planning on doing a more in depth test, but I only had a few minutes to spare during a shoot to compare the two cameras with our actress. GH5 Settings: UHD, V Log L 10 bit, ISO 800, 24p, Sigma 18-35, shot at 28mm f4 using Nikon Speedbooster. Ursa Mini 4.6K Settings: UHD, ProRes 422, ISO 800, 24p, Sigma 18-35, shot at 28mm f4. Grade: I started with Comet Color A Side for the UM46K. Added a bit of contrast and saturation. From that point I tried matching the GH5's color/exposure to match. Lighting was mixed conditions. Her face was lit with a Quasar Science 5600K LED tube + natural daylight coming in the window. Background lights were running at around 2600K. Walls are a greenish yellow color naturally. password: test

Ken, but can anyone take that guy for serious? ; ) 1) What sharpness settings to begin with? 2) Most part of his footage is HFR 1080p; 3) YT comments disabled; 4) Look the way he shows off the wife... As much as his clueless lighting and hablando del rey de Roma, things really require much more effort (I'd dare to add my comment as inferred above-posted).

GH5 I had sharpening at -5. The UM46K has no internal sharpening but I applied a little bit to match the GH5. Well to be honest, the GH5 was closer to her actual look in real life, but the background was wacky compared to in real life. The Ursa handled all around color better but it does give her that slightly un-natural look (which I don't mind at all unless it's a beauty commercial).

-5 on sharpening is always the way to go, unless you like the smartphone look.

Actually the reason i upgraded my ram to 32 Gb was the lengthy projects i work on (usually tv shows). If you are working on 5 min projects or Vlogs (and you have bkgr render off) you won't see any difference. Every time you are tweaking a single clip in any way, a low quality preview clip is loaded into ram to smooth out playback (background render does the same but using ProRes HQ or any other intermediate codec, so your memory gets full faster). When you are out off ram, for example on a lengthy project, FCPX is throwing these data on you hard disk and is streaming from there, so you are experiencing lags on your playback. It's easy to know when you need a ram upgrade and thats when you see your mac's performance slowing down as you are progressing with your project. & Also: Never leave Libraries loaded on your FCPX's browser. It's important to have a single Library (the one which you are working on) opened ONLY. These are data that are also loaded into your ram and slow down your machine for no reason.

Thanks Brother, without owning one, I agree with most of your points. I wish there was more CineLikeD and Natural examples floating around... just because a camera shoots VLog doesn't mean everybody needs it. I recently bought a 5D3 and am ecstatic with it... it really is something else but it does lack any quick post workflow. For right now I am happy with what I have, but I have a few possible upcoming shorts that will require a quicker turnaround with cheaper media and 4K 60p and these honest reviews help me make a choice. Thanks for your thoughts. Thanks for posting this. As much as I don't care about 4K, the 4K 60p is pretty impressive and the other features are great as well. But the 5-axis ibis from the GX85 has really spoiled me. It's amazing how many composition options you have, when you're not hindered by a tripod.

Turning background rendering off always helps, since FCPX loves throwing everything into ram. Leave everything un-rendered until you export your project. This won't affect your final render times dramatically from my experience. Proxy media are handy for 4K editing & multicams, but you need to switch to optimised or original media to color correct so it's inevitable to work on line before exporting to see what you are doing. NEAT is wonderful but kinda processor and ram hungry as it's output goes also directly into ram, so again switching off bkgr render helps. Also switch playback to "better performance". When you have no effects applied and you are working with ProRes, as you do, FCPX effectively streams data directly from your scratch disk, so an external ssd is a must for your libraries. According to your mac's specs you can choose through your workflow which part of your machine will carry the heaviest tasks, so if you have a weak processor for example, transcode H264 to optimised media, throw tour library on an external disk and turn off background rendering. Try these and if you have problems then upgrade your Ram to 32 gigs.

Yeah, but I'm unsure why they believe it needs to be 4K? 2.5k in 24 as 60p would be a fine upgrade for the Pocket and would quench most people's needs for the next couple of years.

Thanks man! Yeah let's hang next time you're in town. Re: lenses. My go to clean look lenses are Xeen 24 and 50mm. Used them on the Vesperteen video. Other than that I use the Sigma 18-35, and Tokina 28-70 f2.6. Grading I just use Premiere Lumetri. I started using Kholi's Comet Color LUT for the 4.6K. I always add some blue to the highlights, and desaturate green. I haven't yet, but don't pixel peep to the extreme. It might be in some footage and I didn't notice. Well my test wasn't to prove that the UM46K is the superior camera. I think everyone knows it has a better image. I was just testing how myself and alot of people shoot with ProRes instead of Raw. I never use Raw. In fact I rarely shoot 4K on the Ursa. Mostly 2K ProRes 4444.

Yeah the GH5 is a little Too brutal on a woman's face. I am sure it could be "turned down". But colors wise not a lot different I see. GH5 for the money is looking hard to beat.

Hi Ki, You can go take a look on http://timelapsenetwork.com/ I'm a contributor there. Basically the key of hyperlapse is the shooting phase, you must be very accurate. For post processing use the tracker in AE. There are tutorials on youtube.

Honestly I am surprised by the GH5 here. Looks almost as good as the Ursa. Can you post ungraded pictures?

I've never seen moire as bad with the GH5 as he shows in his video, but I shoot only 4K. Something seems odd though in his video. Toward the end he shoot in 4K50p, and the stutter as he pans is really bad. I'm not sure why that should be, it should present smoother motion. Who knows what transcoding errors he's done too and the video was only uploaded in HD for some reason. Considering my experience with this as pretty much a non-issue, and the rarity of others complaining about it, I don't put a whole of credence in this. No, webrunner, it's not as bad as he shows. Otherwise we'd be hearing rants all over the internet. It would be right up there with the AF.

There is already a V2 version that should be shipping soon. @jonpais Neat Video is an amazing product, the best NR on the market (Dark Energy was very cool, too bad it was only for AE). However I don't really use it anymore. Two reasons- A7S II, C300 II and 1DX II don't need it in general, and using lights. The slowdown in editing isn't worth it. I now only use it for short clips such as slomo where I didn't get enough light and didn't realize it was so noisy while shooting (in other words- a mistake). Also note that by the time people see your material online it's gone through two levels of 'free' NR- once when you render to H.264 to upload and once more after it's transcoded on YouTube/Vimeo (you can minimize bit crushing by uploading an ALL-I compressed video at a high bitrate in 4K (upscale 1080p content)). All content is now transcoded to multiple sizes and bitrates for adaptive streaming (we used to ask for no transcoding on the back end to preserve quality and allow for instant playback (after validating the bitstream)).

Yep, same exact thing happened to mine, too. Better stuck wide-open than closed down, I guess. Apparently it is a pretty easy fix to open them up and repair though, though I have yet to do so, a quick google reveals lots of instructions.

I would think yes the 6k photo mode might be one of the main reasons I would get one myself. I do like to do birding photos and video of them. And yes I also see a big improvement in the image quality and the colors from peoples videos. Nice. But not sure if the Olympus EM1 mkII might even be better for birding?? I had a EMI, that was a heck of a camera. But I would hate to give up the Video capabilities of the GH5. So probably would not buy a EM1 mkII.

Also keep in mind that there's two different warranties in Germany. I'm not lawyer so that's my basic knowledge and might be a bit off: The first is the voluntary one (Garantie) that is usually given by the manufacturer, e.g. all that register your camera and get extra guarantee mambo jambo. The second is the legally given warranty (Gewährleistung) that is between you and the vendor and for 2 years. For the first 6 months the vendor has to prove that the problem (or its cause) didn't exist when he sold you the equipment, after that you have to prove that it already existed when you received the goods, which is borderline impossible.

If you kept the receipt of the shop where you've buyed it, the seller gives you 2 years warranty (that's German law). If you registered the camera with CPS, just call Canon Germany and discuss with them a solution (if you don't live in Germany). Canon has a quite good service... Click here to go with CPS. Well, I'm in the states, so I have seen a few over here. I know they're a little pricy but since you paid so little for the lens, it's worth it. All of those lubricants that have dried and breaking down will eventually effect the optics.

I understand, the Bright Tangerine products are well made and in carbon fiber - so pro DP use them very often, but they are simply not affordable for my needs in this case.

Backlight separates your subject from the background, makes it pop out, and the image won't look so flat. You can than mess with color temperatures, like lit your subject with warm (3500K) light, than give him a cool (6000K) backlight (on the hair for example). Lol. They could have no plans to ever make a Pocket II and they're just using that as an excuse. I guess I'll have to settle for 3K Raw on my 5D3.

Yeah I would have been happy with that, basically a BMCC as a Pocket, whats wrong with that? Duh! Christ the data with 4k raw would have been crazy as hell anyways?? Damn battery would last 10 minutes LoL. I would not have even begun to want 4k Raw? Who in the hell did they ask that even wanted that shit?? Sure as hell didn't come on here and ask anyone about Our opinions, that's for sure. Jesus even a Arri is not 4k! A Arri, BM Ursa uses about 60% of the body as a heat sink. And a Red has a fan on the top of them that will blow your wig off if you lean over one! Forget about having a on-board mic on one of them. And they are going to run 4k raw in a body you can stick in your pocket? No the hell wonder they can't find a sensor for it LoL.

People had way to high expectations about this camera, not only because the hype Panasonic started but because of rumor sites and potential buyers upping the hype. 10bit 422 is great but it's not some magical feature that will make everything you shoot look like Alexa footage. Messing up on 10 bit will hurt almost as much as messing up on 8 bit. Future 400 Mbps update not considered. Judging the camera for what it is, my first impressions are great. Im sure it's going to be a real workhorse just like the GH4 is. Edit. Forgot to mention something about the autofocus. Personally I don't use it but sure, it would have been nice to have. If you need world class leading autofocus during video recording then look elsewhere. Panasonic might fix it with firmware, or not.

Switching from Premiere CC/Resolve to FCPX is the best decision I ever made. Over the last year I must have saved at least six months in editing and render times (Btw, today I downloaded a 30 day trial of Capture One Pro 10. Took me about 20 minutes to realize that it's time to dump Lightroom as well. So, "Buy buy Adobe. Loved you from CS5 to CC but you have lost the mojo.")

The highlights are definitely a huge win for the UM46K. @Cinegain you're right about the yellow/orange. I made it a point to not key out sections for adjustments. If I were to key I would fix those 2 warm lights in the back to be less green/yellow. Her face stays pretty neutral which is good. Overall I really like the GH5 though. I imagine it will even get better with the bitrate increase at 10 bit. I should be able to upload the raw footage later if you guys want to test it out for yourself.

To be fair, most camera will do a ok job in controlled environment, but if you go shoot in uncontrolled mixed light environment, or outside in high contrast situation, the gh5 will fall apart compared to the ursa 4.6k. That what you pay for. Also the motion is not even comparable, it s just ugly on Gh cameras, it s fine if you do documentary/corporate work but for fiction or music video the aesthetic is not very appropriate .

A rather quick edit of a short sailing trip in The Hague: Again I am really satisfied with the quality. The Summilux really sings. Stupidly enough I did not bring my field recorder so I had to rely on the built-in mic of the GX80, which I only could use in the beginning. The lack of a mic is is really annoying me, my next camera really needs to have have a mic in. I even considered checking out the A6500 but gave it up quickly after hearing about the dimmed screen issues.

Great video, I know that was one of the reasons I ended up buying one. Ultimately, I didn't like the form factor, but I know there was a lengthy discussion and praise of that video in the early days of the BMMCC's release. With that being said, I would definitely contact them if I were you. I read it to mean that they are not saying it won't work, just that they are not going out of their way to continue to specifically make it work. Maybe your argument could convince them. Btw, slightly off topic, but I hate that there is this defensive, almost attack behavior with BM loyalists when someone questions anything about the company or their products.
