  1. The color is similar to the GX85 and G85, but with Cine D and V-log it's better I think. I need to shoot more but for now I'm very pleased with the results I've been getting with 10-bit 25p v-log. In post I use the Leeming lut as base and grade from there. Grading from scratch is doable and a nice way to get better at grading. The camera is very much as I expected, a big upgrade from the GH4 with all the new features from the GX85/G85 and more. It's not going to compete with BM, Canon and Sony for DR, RAW, low light etc, but who was really expecting that? It's an amazing camera for the money, but you can get better images less money (I know you know that). If you don't plan to shoot v-log, 4K 60p, anamorphic or slow motion I would probably recommend the G85 for less than half the price. It's more power hungry though, so you need at least 2 batteries. Note that I shoot with Panasonic cameras because the image is good enough for me and I think it's the most complete system for my needs: reliability, price, size, weight, ergonomics, lens choice etc.

    NX1 / NX500

So I could no longer hold in my curiosity and have ended up ordering the nx1 + 16-50. The thing is that I know ergonomically it's going to hit every previous camera I've had out the park. I really just need to know now if I will like the image and how it will compare with my XT2 for more technical things like noise, DR, artefacts, etc. I'll probably post some comparisons up over the weekend.

  4. I think the most interesting of these forums is the plurality of opinions and perspectives. Some of my own filmography has been shot on Arri cameras for various reasons. I'd still pick the Varicam without hesitating not even for a second, despite my love for Blackmagic and DSLRs when their form factor is what I'm looking for. Varicam outcome is my favorite bet for acquisition BTW, as of now. Nothing shot there, yet. Funny, isn't it?

  5. Agree about the stealthiness. Tested it on my hip today, pointing to the side and pretending to film something else in front of me with an even less intrusive looking camera. There are times during street protests when it kicks off and looking away from the action whilst filming it is the way to go. 28mm FF equivalent at f11 with that small sensor is a decent angle of view and a huge amount of depth of field. Practically everything was in focus when I got my test home - with tripod quality stability. I bought the GX80 almost exclusively to be used with the 14-140ii for street scenarios and even at 140mm it looks like a non threatening toy. Bloody love this camera.

  6. Agreed, no way i will ditch the GX80 any time soon, it delivers incredible quality in such a small package! There is no alternative once one combines ibis, size and picture quality. But maybe a G85 would be a nice addition to my collection

  8. I'm still quite happy with my GX80 and I won't be selling it anytime soon. It's taking great photos and videos. I could mention some negatives, but the fact of the matter is that this camera is good enough. I couple it with the ZOOM H1 positioned close to the subject and I've found it an impressive match for many systems... still state of the art in 2017.

Yes...I use the Leeming LUT exactly like you do...the only thing I "disagree" with him a little on is in the exposure....he provides a bit of a manual for use with his LUTs (which as far as I know no one else does...though in fairness I've not used Andrews procolor or Luke's LUTS and they may do also)....anyway in terms of exposure he suggests ETTR which in most cases work, but under trying circumstances nothing beats a good spot/incident lightmeter. But it's really only a problem when you have an extremely bright source in the shot....relative to the rest. Anyway, once I started using his LUT in the GH4 the camera became a different beast! In the US they are flying off the shelf....B&H already sold out of 2 shipments and the next stock is expected May 4th...mine should ship from Hot Rod Camera sometime today or tomorrow!

  10. I agree and other than 4K 60p it's hard to see what else they can add. 20mp sensor, lossless ex. tcv, headphone jack, 120p? I also agree that they could put 60P in the next G camera some time next year maybe, but I'm not sure it's possible due to overheating. The GH5 is huge compared to the G85. I think the next will be GX9, and it will be aimed for photographers with dual card slots but not v-log, 10 bit etc. Only time will tell, but for now I'm very happy with my setup with G85 and GH5 Will probably sell the GX85 soon.

  11. Very nice video @jase! I just bought a G85 as they were on sale for almost 40% here in Norway. Keep looking and maybe there will be similar deals in Germany. My first impressions is that ergonomics is much better than the GX85 (obviously). Compared to my GH5 it's very small and light, and even though Panasonic is releasing new models I very much doubt any of them will have 4K 60P if that's something you want. The GH5 is big for a reason. The size and weight difference to the GH4 and G85 is much more noticeable than in pictures.

  12. Puzzled by his answer to when the new LS300 firmware will be available. "It won't be released until March" Erm....its already April mate. I hope its not March 2018! As a side note, I used the LS300 on its first job this week live streaming a press conference. Not thrilling obviously but it shows how versatile this thing is. Just having the USB host port on it so you can plug in a cheap USB wireless or ethernet adapter and get out live direct off the camera or even just plug in a 4G modem stick and go live is an absolutely incredible feature. Considering how much a Teradek Vidiu would cost to add this function to another camera, thats well over a third of what I paid for the LS300.

  14. I adjusted the contrast with the curves for both GH5 versions and I warmed up the Kholi. It should be easy to tell them apart. Kholi's version is not bad but it looks too flat for my taste. I don't know @Hanriverprod, I think I still stand by my previous assessment that the original grade looks better and closer to the BM which should be the target when matching cameras. Maybe a better grade than mine can help, but then whats the point of using the LUT in the first place

  15. Yeah I agree, I would not push this "out the door" as they say. But it a LOT better of a starting place than the original one. I like the upgrade on it. It is not a mile off like the first one. But I was thinking earlier that his sort of look maybe more of the future look than you and I, we, might like. With 4k, 6k, 8k, out, well I just don't see the old school film look even being able to Be duplicated, hell maybe even desired by the younger crowd. We may be becoming a Dinosaur. A lot of young people may not know what a film look even is, or care. You have to remember a lot of them grew up as gamers, total Smartphone users! They really don't care about buttery smoothness, 24fps, they want 60fps or more, no choppy stuff, crystal clear clean output. I live in a small College town of 12,000 people with a College that has 28,000 students. Miami of Ohio. I ate out tonight at a Sports Bar in Oxford, Ohio where I live, and where the College is. They had 22 42" TV's, all of them 4k, and they had like a 22" TV, maybe 19", I sat at the bar with my wife, they had a Good looking, young female Bartender , at Every booth, and you could choose what YOU wanted to look at! Everyone of them seemed like they were on a smartphone, Apple Laptop yikes!, iPad etc. You think they give a crap about a Film look?? I Really doubt it. Our Goose is cooked down the road like it or not.

  17. Switching from Premiere CC/Resolve to FCPX is the best decision I ever made. Over the last year I must have saved at least six months in editing and render times (Btw, today I downloaded a 30 day trial of Capture One Pro 10. Took me about 20 minutes to realize that it's time to dump Lightroom as well. So, "Buy buy Adobe. Loved you from CS5 to CC but you have lost the mojo.")

  18. A rather quick edit of a short sailing trip in The Hague: Again I am really satisfied with the quality. The Summilux really sings. Stupidly enough I did not bring my field recorder so I had to rely on the built-in mic of the GX80, which I only could use in the beginning. The lack of a mic is is really annoying me, my next camera really needs to have have a mic in. I even considered checking out the A6500 but gave it up quickly after hearing about the dimmed screen issues.

  19. Honestly if I was only concerned with IQ, the 5D3 would be enough, but the post workflow is a little long and it lacks some of the simple, or should I say, easy features of the GH5... mostly 60p in 4K and the variable frame rates conformed in camera and 5-axis IBIS. So for me, the 5D3 would be the camera I'd use for my more thoughtful shorts and the GH5 would be for my micro, handheld shorts. With that said, I probably won't get one right now... or I'll order one tomorrow. Lol.

Can I find this warming filter on premiere? Strange, I think it'soversharpen caus I forgot to decrease the sharpening to 0 when shooting. But Nikon 1080p is a bit soft, I agree

  21. I've had my GH5 for a week now and have been playing with it. My hopes for it were that it would be an amazing and discreet handheld camera (like the XC10) with very good image quality (unlike the XC10 at high ISO). My concern was that colour wouldn't be up to scratch. I see a lot of Panasonic videos with non-pleasing skin, to my eyes at least. I was excited by 10bit V-Log, and the potential that the colorimetry of the camera could be altered to a certain extent within the limitations of the 10 bit 422 codec. I know that Leeming luts exist. But accurate colour does not look nice to me. I like the Canon look, and even more than that I like the look of 35mm photographic film. So for the past few days I've been developing two kinds of lut. One is to match the colour and gamma of the GH5 with Magic Lantern Cinelog (ACR) RAW. And the other is to match the colour and contrast of Ektar 100 film. Here are some results of the Ektar lut: This is a look that I like... a lot. I can see myself shooting V-Log and being confident that the image can be moulded the way I want it.

  22. :-D You know, I don't post your videos anymore here because you're around. But, you were the first one to say no to that misinformation spread by MY on YT. I only refer tap to focus because there's no how to blame CDAF for. And it works perfectly well for the automation job :-) Funny coincidence. Here's another one I find pretty interesting from a 20 bucks lens:

  24. Emanuel, I too have demonstrated that the AF can be used quite effectively, and this is without touch to focus. In the above videos, he certainly didn't use touch focus, but rather the CAF was running on the fly. I've tended to use 1-area AF and find it quite effective. There are many videos out there where people are getting good results. I also agree with Tony N., the Sony AF is certainly not perfect either. Been there done that. In fact the Sony, more than the Panasonic, would often refuse to focus on a face that filled up 1/2 of the frame, choosing the background instead. Yes, the Sony CAF is better in general, but having used both, I don't think it's that much better, I really don't. I haven't used the A9, so no comments there. Is the GH5 AF as good as it could be? No. Is the AF a lot better than some think it is? You betcha! Will Panasonic further improve it in the GH5? I'm betting yes.

  25. Every camera is able to produce the job. DR and highlights are not the major bonus of the GH5. Other than that, it is able to get the task done. Take a look on this one here: I bet you'll find it interesting to narrative work. No idea if matches your writing though :-) PS -- Funny, I've just checked you had been already there, after all. So, seems I somehow guessed it : ))

  26. I agree, features to price ratio, the GH5 is a great camera. And if I were to use one for paid jobs, it would be a no brainer... I'd imagine 3 or 4 small jobs would pay it off, but I don't do paid jobs... I'm a screenwriter looking for another outlet to showcase my writing. It's very unlikely I will ever do a paid job with it, so I have to be more cautious with my selections... especially since I tested about a dozen cameras and fifty lenses in the past couple of years.

  27. Indeed. 5D3 ML raw is hard to beat up ; ) You'll gain IBIS, 4K/60p, though. Without going to 8-bit for such form factor. I believe with the right setup and competent settings, this capture device can shine where your money sits as finest choice. AF is a mantra. Those shitty bastards have decided to set AF on 4K/60p, so people have started to freak out :-D You spotted it. Needless to say Hollywood is a process (no less) ?
    1 point
  28. You have no AF in slow mo mode, and I suppose you'll need slow mo on a paid gig. So what is this still ongoing AF discussion about? Most of the people complaining about AF never even truly used AF before. They just want the canon dual pixel and the A6500 AF technology in the GH5. It was written down thousand times in this forum, pick the right camera for the right job
    1 point
  29. You're absolutely right. Same feeling here. You know, people think they are able to mimic Hollywood straight out of the box ; ) I share Dennis' (@deezid) perspective, though, not as much skeptical as him. My only beef with GH5 is not the pathetic plot over AF, obviously. But, its over processed outcome; POV I concur. See: And: I still believe this camera is able to produce the best current offer in competent hands.

  30. Man that Seal Beach October video looks great. Awesome color, good enough resolution. I wish JVC would put out a camera in DSLR form, I might be interested in something like this. But for the money, it's probably the best deal around.

  31. For sure. My paid gigs normally use manual focus and focus puller 100% of the time, so focus pulling feature seems more appealing to me than a machine making the decisions on the operator's behalf. In any case, it is rather possible to use touchscreen focus for gimbal shots. Mobile app can also be of a great help. To me, this AF minus is absolutely nonsense. I never put my hands on one yet, but I am pretty sure this camera is able to produce proper AF if the operator knows to workaround eventual limitations. On the other hand, show me 4K/60p coupled to CAF for same price and size. I guess I wouldn't even consider the AF ticket anyway. Tap to focus is much more reliable. Horses for courses? To each his/her own? We can't all of us be stuck in the same yellow color, oh yeah :-)

  32. @BTM_Pix My friend shooting with the LS300 told me, that the smart adapter doesn't work with some Canon lenses (AF), but he didn't try them all, for sure...He confirmed, that the LS300 AF works very well with another Panasonic lens, the 12-35 F2.8 OIS. These are the only Pana lenses he tested with AF. He uses Canon and other lenses (many primes) with adapters and manual focus, as the focus support is great on this camera. Haven't tested face detection...

  34. @Emanuel Oh, as seen some weeks ago, it worked perfectly with the Panasonic 35-100 F2.8 on it (stabilization worked quite well too)...Very reliable with this lens when keeping subject in the center of frame...No pulsing, no microadjustmenst, no pumping forth and back of background or subject...No such issues like in a currently released, hyped "enthusiast camera"... Neither did I...

  36. Anyways, my car can be unable to beat a Ferrari, but if it takes me to wherever the Ferrari or any other takes me, I can still drive it without much further complaints. No GH5 here yet, but seems pretty enough this AF performance or tap to focus workaround (without mention the focus pulling feature!): And please don't tell me touchscreen focus is not a valid solution because it is perhaps the best AF way to ever select... AF. In any camera for any setup. Our brain is surely brighter to handle the job than a machine. Period. Here's another example that I am not alone on this one:

  37. Here it is doing that particular job by the way. HD to the card and simultaneous live stream broadcast via the £10 Edimax dual band wifi adapter you can see sticking out near the back next to the peephole viewing device. Or the EVF as JVC laughingly refer to it. And my Nikon 70-200mm seeing some action as a very functional broadcast lens ! As this was in HD, using the Prime Zoom (or Zoom Zoom in this case) actually turns it into a 70-460mm f2.8 lens. Not too shabby really.

  38. I would expect everyone to know those basics from the article, the question is: how much more data rate will you need in All-I to match the quality of Long GOP? If it's 3 times, you already lose quality with the 400 Mbps codec. @Fritz Pierre is of course right about the "in the right hands" comment, but those also do magic with 8bit 4:2:0 material in 100 Mbps. I've seen a table with comparison of the different compression levels but I can't recall where, I'll edit it in when/if I find it. If you don't mind wading through a lot of pages on DVXUser, there is a detailed explanation in the GH5 is coming thread on this very subject....and of course storage media is going to be the bottleneck in this new FW update and codec...that's why I like Prores...I already have the large fast SSD's and my slower Sandisks in SD seems to work seemlessly in the current 150Mbps acquisition

  40. Fixed color temp will get you more light output at the same rated wattage. In bi-colors, half the leds are daylight and half are tungsten. So if you're at either daylight or tungsten, you're only getting half the potential light output. Even if all the led lights were going, fresnels would most likely offer superior light output, since there is a big reflector behind the lamp. Also fresnels offer much more controllable light. You can go from zoom to spot, whereas with panels, you're at a fixed, often wide, beam angle.
    1 point
  41. Yeah Accuracy, and the ability to have a lot narrower light beam. Also the Fresnel lens helps magnify the light just like a Lighthouse Fresnel does. So you can use a lower wattage lamp, bulb, LCD in them. And the good ones are built like a tank. Arri ones are for sure. You have to have in reality all kinds of light to cover making a top notch film. Even bare light bulbs. Lighting is not an easy thing to pull off. It does take a lot skill. And I hate, a Bunch of light stands. And the Bi Color ones are for high and low kelvin values. And you can get a bit of softer light on the darker yellowish LCDs compared to the clear or white ones. They are getting better and cheaper by the day. Heck some of the new ones you can just fold them up, who would have ever thought!

  42. House of card intro is a great classic from Drew Geraci but it was all done with a slider (dynamic perception). That's an "easy" hyperlapse method. For long hyperlapse you'll need much more work (manual move shot move with a tripod and frame by frame post-stab).

The problem that I ran into, as well as Kholi, is that you can make adjustments to match the UM46K for her (the actress) but some of the green/yellow stuff isn't possible to fix with one overall LUT. I tend to worry less about skin tones with a LUT b/c the face can be keyed or masked and adjusted. For Kholi's I was push her skin more toward magenta with a little more saturation.
