  1. Iscorama Pre-36 with Helios 44 @ f2.8 (oval aperture) on Canon 5D3 To get that sharp on my (sharpness tweaked) Kowa Inflight or Kowa B&H with Core DNA attached I'd need to stop down to at least f5.6. Sharpness is indeed often overrated, but it's sure nice to have and can always be softened in Resolve very nicely. Iscorama still has perfect balance of sharpness but with organic feel due to vintage coating. More modern cinelux type lenses are as sharp, yet look very clinical (to my eyes at least).

  6. Ever since I gave up my Nikon D5200 a few years ago for the Panasonic GX7, I've been dearly missing one lens. The 17-50mm f2.8. I tried the 12-35mm f2.8 on the Panasonic but didn't like it. Then the Samsung NX1 came out along with the 16-50mm f2-2.8. At the time, it was way above my budget. So I've since considered other systems such as the Sony but for one reason or another, they didn't fit my needs. But now, over 2 years later, I've finally been able and willing to pick one up. Luckily as well, the camera body is entirely unused. The manufacturer sealing was still in place. One of the first things I do when I get a new camera is to compare it to my other camera(s) for things like colour, dynamic range and noise. I've made many such tests before but never usually post them. This time I've taken the time to do it properly and edit it together for all to see. First up is the X-T2 vs NX1 shootout. The main point of this was to see the differences in colour and tonality. See the video description for all the fine details on settings. And next is this high iso comparison with two other cameras I currently have. Again, you can see the video description for all the setting details. Some thoughts on the differences between the X-T2 and NX1: AF-C and focus pulling with AF works much better on the older NX1 than the X-T2; in video anyway. The 16-50mm f2-2.8 is a ridiculously good lens, image wise. And the focus rings works just like a classic lens. The grip and button layout of the NX1 is far better. I've always felt the retro styling of Fujifilm were a detriment to their functionality. The downside to the NX1 is that it is far inferior to the XT2 in low light. The last shot in the shootout was shot at ISO 800 on the NX1 and 1600 on the XT2, yet the NX1 shows less detail and more muddiness due to the noise reduction. Also the NX1 is far sharper in 4k and HD but has more aliasing and moiré in the latter. Anyway, I'd really like to hear your thoughts on the difference between the images I'm yet undecided of which system to keep, even though the NX1 would finally fulfil my want.. or need of a 16-50mm f2.8.

  8. Is the NX1 a great camera? Absolutely. Is it still competitive in 2017? In some areas surprisingly yes. Should someone with no investment in NX gear and no need for NX1 specific features (really only h.265 comes to mind here) buy one in 2017? No way, Jose. No warranties, no repairs, no replacements. Any money you're putting in now you will never get back. EVEN IF the NX1 was the best camera ever made I still wouldn't recommend buying one now, unless you can find one with lens for really stupidly cheap. That being said, would I trade my NX gear for a GH5 or a6500? Heck no lol.

  9. It depends on what you're going to use it for. The X-T2 is better in terms of build quality and ergonomics (especially the joystick) but I've used them side by side for work and what ends up in the image file is identical. I don't find the AF lacking and for what I'm using it for the AF does get exercised heavily. The reduced FPS and buffer weren't a practical issue either to be honest. As for video, well you lose the 1.17 crop in 4K so there is some potential artifacts involved but I'd need to do full A/B comparison but it's not jarring enough for me to draw attention to itself. And there's no FLOG but there's no additional £1000 to pay for an external recorder either. The compact size is a bonus for me but I will definitely look at getting the X-T10 side grip to make it a bit more ergonomic. In a straight choice then of course I'd have X-T2 but if it came to saving or raising funds for additional stuff then I wouldn't be fazed by having to 'make do' with the X-T20

  10. @Henry Silvestriz Well, it's a hard decision because discontinued...but still outstanding - not only as video device (in good light - and when using non-Samsung lenses - it outranges the 5d m3 mostly when talking photo IQ) When keeping it at low ISOs, you will get outstanding results and very beautiful (natural/realistic) colors...In daylight, it has a fantastic DR (photo only, please consider - film DR is worse than most current cameras)... It's a pity, that it can't do wireless TTL/HSS - I would have liked to work with more strobes for sophisticated "lighting concerts" with it... (Image is OOC-JPEG, without any correction - only cropped down to 1.000px horizontal)

I strongly doubt it. G85 is half the price of a GH5! Which will make it an attractive purchase for many people.

B&H occasionally has a few weird glitches when they mark something as discontinued when they just mean out of stock. Plus the G7 would get discontinued before the G85....

  13. @MountneerMan I am not going to discuss about different cameras, you know - I know, it is a really long conversation (NX is APS-C 28megapixels BSI sensor, while GH5 is 20mgpxls m43, I do not see them being equal at all. The things I mentioned in Sony are absolutely true and tested, and I can add more if you'd like!), and I mentioned in all my posts here that NX is a dead camera, I thought we are all (or, mostly!) adults here and know what a "dead system" means. I already went that far as to propose a D7200 and X-T20, and said good things about GH5, but if people were always following the easiest and most common option then humanity would be still eating rotten animals from the ground and collecting fruits from the trees. In 2-3 months there will be the new Sony camera, and 2-3 months after that the new Panasonic, and 2-3 months after that the new Nikon mirrorless we all were hoping, and 2-3 months after that the new - at last - Canon mirrorless M Pro etc etc In a year there will be at least 3-5 cameras equally intriguing - or more, than the GH5 and the 8 hour tutorials will be dead space. And most camera stores in the world, go bankrupt anyway. In my country Samsung abandoned the camera business before most places, NX300/NX3000 were the last releases, and now look at me, have 3 NX cameras, numerous lenses, they even bring some money to help me build the next system, wherever I see a true APS-C hybrid really as innovative and forward thinking as NX1 was. Do not forget, people changed 2 or even 3 systems since abandoning NX out of fear. Ours are still working, and still servicing (for how much, I do not know, there are still cameras in warranty though, and new ones). As of batteries, I have never used more than 2 batteries (I have 3), and I am talking about a full day of video, or thousands of pictures. Plus you can connect a USB charger anytime you want. I got your point, just saying though! People are still interested in NX1: 1) it is still relevant technologically and pragmatically 2) there are bargains that you can get NX1 for very cheap (as low as 650euros with the 30mm pancake in Sweden and 1200$ with the 16-50S in the States, and brand new in Australia, Switzerland, Netherlands, Germany, UK, US for much less than 900$/pounds/euros, sometimes including the S lens in some specific sales, unfortunately I wasn't able to catch such a bargain). For someone that do not want to change camera in a few years time, and find a good deal, he can spend as much as some expensive large sensored compacts cost (those are already obsolete as well, aren't they?) and have one of the best crop HYBRIDS ever made (50% photo/ 50% video). Have you used one? What system do you own right now? P.S NX is a dead system, you really can't go anywhere else from here, but remember back then Fuji had the X-T1 16megapxls, and debatable if and how better is the new X-T2 from the NX1. Just saved almost 3000euros because I DIDN'T buy the Fuji back then!

  14. @MountneerMan GH5 is a lot worst in the photo department, and a6500 is worst in most (ergonomics, battery life, terrible user interface, gimmick touch screen features, and a ton other) issues. The GH5 costs a lot more anyway. The usual deal now with the NX1s - that most people buy - are a NX1 with a 16-50S and a few more extras (external chargers, extra batteries, or whatever) that goes for around 1500$ or less. If you can find one for less than that, and/or in very good condition, then it is further away that any other top camera right now. It is a dead system, it can be problematic, for some it is a great chance to own a very futuristic great camera for a little money. I wouldn't propose this camera light hearted to anyone, on the other hand it is just a great experience and for specific purposes, needs, and people, it can be a great bargain! Personally, I will be waiting for the next generation, as the current ones not ticking all the boxes for my impression of a great hybrid APS-C camera. GH5 is a great, no-nonsense, camera and Panasonic right now is the most tempting, but I am an APS-C (S35) fun, and I am not changing any time soon.

C200 will more than likely have dual pixel autofocus, built in ND, flip out screen, compressed 4k, canon colors for the same or less price of a 1DX II. Seems like the perfect compromise to me.

But Seriously, I don't know why you go to all ends defending the NX1? It's as if I cursed your family name because I prefer Fuji colors to Samsung colors... I would think most people would. Honestly, Samsung made fine cameras. I enjoyed my time with the NX500. It was a fun camera with great ergonomics. Do you have a Vimeo or YouTube page? I don't think I've ever seen any of your NX1 work. I would love to see what you're getting out of her.

  23. Sorry, but NX1 is a totally different camera from any Canon. Totally. You shoot ISO 100 with canon and push the shadows in post? TOTAL NOISE. You do the same with NX1? Much better results than native high ISO. Of course I'm not saying the NX1 is on par or better than 1DX MK2. It's 1 stop behind in noise level, but has 8MP more. And if you shoot ISO 100 even in low light and push in post...you'll be amazed. Even with 1/250 or higher. AF is another thing. Mirrorless are way different than DSLR in AF technique. I have read so many posts like yours (about D500 having more keepers). Simply...and sorry to say that, you don't use the right technique with NX1. Again, I'm not saying NX1 is on par or better with D500 in AF. Again, it has more MP and a totally different focusing system. you need to know exactly how it works to make the best out of it. And yet, from time to time it misses focus, but...believe in me, I have improved 500% my keepers rate with practice. Now, when I shoot some sports like bicicle races, basketball or tennis, I have near 100% keepers, something I never achieved with any other system. Of course, I'm referring to NX1 + 16-50S or, even better, 50-150S.

  24. @mercer What do you mean hands down? not my hands! There are so many tweaks, profiles, settings on the NX cameras that I doubt you can not achieve whatever pleases you. Also there are scorns of plug ins and LUTs that simulate every single color or film profile ever made (almost). The sensor of Fuji is the same 24MP sensor used by most 24MP cameras around, while the NX sensor is used only by 2 NX cameras and no one else, I would call that more original. I consider myself a full grown up. @Inazuma Sorry, I fail to see the huge difference you are referring to, I have a 27" color corrected 1440 monitor. In the 4 cameras comparison I fail to see such a huge difference either (I was actually surprised at 3200ISO). Are you shooting 800ISO 2f and 1600ISO 2.8f?

  25. Again I did not mean to start a whole thing with anyone about what camera is better or how good the NX1 at what I was merely just trying to state my opinion to the OP and answer his question "Should I buy a Samsung NX1 now May 2017?". To answer your question I currently only own two camera an NX1 and a Sony a6000 that I got for really cheep and hardly ever use but wanted a smaller compact camera mostly for photos. The NX1 is an absolutely FANTASTIC camera and I love it. I am not going to be selling it anytime soon if ever and likely wont be buying a new A camera any time soon but that still does not mean I would recommend someone invest in the NX system at this point. When I bought my NX1 I borrowed a GH4 and an NX1 for about week each and decided on getting the NX1 over the GH4 as it was a better camera. Now I dont think it should be a surprise that if I did the same thing today with the GH5 and the NX1 the GH5 would win with 4k 60fps and 10 bit 4:2:2 and 180 fps 1080(and before you ask yes I have had the pleasure of playing around with the GH5 a few weeks ago). As a side note I gotta stop writing posts on threads of this nature because the fan boys are too quick to jump on anyone who even just hints at the fact the NX1 might not the best camera ever made. Never used the 16-50 f3.5-5.6 I own the 16-50 f/2-2.8 lens and its fantastic. I love that is goes to f2 at 16mm it really adds to its versatility. Also never used the 12-24 f4-5.6 for the same reason as above and rarely want to shoot wider than 16mm I own the 50-200 and its a great lens upto about 150mm beyond that it gets pretty soft quickly. still usable but I find you can get more detail by pulling out a little bit to ~150 and then cropping in post. of course this is not always an option like if you are filming in slow mo at 1080 or if we need alot of reach and want to goto 200mm and then crop on top of that. The 30mm f2 prime is also a great lens that is worth looking into as well. it has a nice normal focal length its fast at f2 with nice bokeh and really small and light. I love this lens for walking around on the streets.

  29. The X-T20 is really that cheap (compared with the X-T2)! and has a touch screen as well.. It ain't true that aren't great NX bargains, they just becoming less and less. End of 2015, when it was obvious that Samsung was abandoning the market, a lot of people sold their kits for dead cheap. In that period and early 2016 (until last summer more or less) most shops were getting rid of stock and you could find NX1 new for 650euros in Switzerland (I was considering fly there to pickup a couple of NX1s and S lenses!) and other crazy offers in Australia, Canada (I bought a 12-24mm, but with the shipping costs to Europe and all, it was more expensive that I hoped!), UK (John Lewis, or whatever its called, had until recently some boxes with the NX1+S lens kit, some lucky people got the deal of the century), Turkey (a lot of Turkish people became rich, buying locally and selling world wide, for some period the best lenses bargains on ebay were from Turkey) and Scandinavia. After the releases of new cameras in 2016 (and just before the GH5 announcement), it was pretty obvious that NX system will be relevant for at least a few more years, as it was offering the biggest megapixel count in APS-C land (28MP), the only BSI crop sensor (the other one, but full frame is the A7Rii), futureproof H265 that just recently can be fully utilized (almost every hardware piece, from mobile phone SoC to PC components and software are H265 compatible), a very modern AF system on sensor (with some tricks also, detecting movement, baseball throw, photo finish trigger, jump activation), 15fps, excellent OLED screen and viewfinder, best in industry (back then) wireless/connectivity features, UI and touch screen implementation (Fuji and Sony still strangling in that matter), very good 120fps slow motion, plus all the other advantages (ergonomics, battery life, no overheating etc etc) and plus the great mod/hack scene that increased the already many feats and video capabilities. With the NX500 (same sensor, crop in 4K though) and some other older NX I have, I have a complete kit for most uses (from family photos to paid jobs). For me, the only disadvantages are 1) aggressive NR in high ISO settings (but with the 2-2.8f 16-50S I can be in the same lever as other similar systems have 2.8-4f or 4f lenses) 2) not able to zoom in to check focus while recording video (a cheap monitor can do the job, still I would prefer it in build). I have no experience with the X-T2, NX1 simply totally annihilates older Fuji cameras, but I was expecting X-T2 to really crush NX1, that is not the case, and in most instances I prefer NX1 more than the Fuji, plus some other things that Samsung is better anyway.

  30. Regardless of your lighting, other factors will affect skintones. You can have an LED with 100 CRI but if the person is sitting at a large orangey wood table, the light is going to be bouncing off that and giving a slight orangey cast to the face. Same with red carpets, snotty green sofas, big blue walls, etc. Sometimes you will have to tweak in post. I'm no expert but I always key the skintones in resolve, tweak hue vs hue and desaturate a bit, always helps.

  31. The problem with the NX1 is that the people who have them know how good they are so the sort of dirt cheap second hand prices you'd expect of a dead system that wasn't able success either just haven't materialised. Same with cameras like Sigma DP2m which when it ended up being sold off at £300 new then you'd expect to pick up second hand ones now for half that but the people who have them know what they've got and won't be getting rid of them! If NX1s were at the sort of level that I thought they would be under those circumstances (£400-500 ish) then I'd say chop in the XT2 for an X-T20 and a used NX1 and have the best of both worlds!

  32. Arikhan: for low light, try to shoot it at iso 100 raw, and raise shadows in post. Much better than high iso. P.s. to the original poster. Nx1 is still the best hybrid apsc camera. One of the overall best in general. If you find a good deal, buy it.

  33. The other videos are actually shot with the GH3, except a few B shots in a couple of videos. The other videos are shot with LED's in the winter and these new ones with natural light so they are not 100% comparable. Anyway, the color coming out of the newer camera models are just so much easier to handle in post. The DR gained in this shot is probably lost in the grade I don't see much either and this location is a bit tricky to say the least. I've tried covering up the windows, but it looks a bit weird and I obviously loose a lot light. I'm still getting used to exposing v-log and these were a bit too much underexposed if I remember correctly. But for what it is I'm happy with the result for now. I just got the G85 really cheap and that is a great camera. The GX85 is much better looking, but the ergonomics on the G85 is in another league. Compared to the GH5 and GX85 it's easily the most bang for buck for enthusiasts who wants a small footprint. The GH5 is much more a "Pro" camera which can be built into a low-budget cinema camera. The GH5 is also a lot bigger and heavier. Have you went to the store to check it out yet? When the GH4 v-log was leaked I was very excited to see how good it looked with just a small contrast correction, unfortunately it didn't work well without an external recorder. Now with the GH5 you don't need that unless you want to shoot 4K 50p. I probably don't need the GH5 or v-log but it's very exciting to shoot with and I also enjoy the challenge of mastering it and improving my skills. This camera will be with until 1) the GH6 comes out with or 2) someone starts paying me and I need something better (which is very unlikely ). What I like about the GH5 though is that there is nothing to miss. Every feature I need is there and it just feels solid. And even though I've had it for a while I've barely touched the surface, there are so many new features to explore like the Like 709 profile that I just tried and looks very promising. Slow motion is also very cool!

MACBOOK OR IMAC - WHO WINS?

Both will have no problem editing HD video with optimized media, no matter the source codec. For UHD, I would go for a 5k iMac. Why? You might want to monitor the video full size once in a while, without having to shift cmd f. If you connect an external 4k monitor, the GPU will have to struggle to feed both devices. With 5k, you can customize the workspaces for Organize (100% video, space left for two to three columns of browser thumbnails and a slim inspector, no timeline), Standard (=Editing, all windows, with scaled-down viewer) and Color & Effects (100% video, no browser, three small up/down-scrollable "tracks" of the timeline, slim inspector and a "two-up" of scopes).

  39. These are from the cheap series, the 16-50pz is very small - good for video because of the zoom in/out buttons, OIS, sample variation applies greatly but usually is much better than Sony offerings. Good and small all arounder, good (very light) for gimbal work. I use it with NX1 on Ronin. Approximately 150euros used, preferably 120. 12-24, very sharp, very light, the only ultra wide zoom option any way. I like it a lot. The build quality is questionable. Back then it was one of the best of its kind. The 10-24 4f Fuji is the better such lens right now (double the price). Canon M 11-22 is equally good and cheap. Approximately 350euros used, preferably 280. 50-200 is a great lens for its class. All the copies I have used were surprisingly good, I have even used' em for night performances video covering indoors. Longer NX lens anyway. Not that good at the longer end. Approximately 250euros used, preferably 200. The cost estimations are the maximum prices I would pay for each. All these are quite good and I own them, but the NX system shines with the better ones, and especially the S lenses (16-50 and 50-150). The 30mm 2f (very slow AF though), 45mm 1.8f (fast focusing!), 60mm 2.8f macro (good for portraits as well), excellent 85mm 1.4f (dreamy like!) and my favorite fish eye 10mm 3.5f. Also the cheap ones are a bit slow (aperture wise), it could be problematic for high ISO video (and this is the greatest NX disadvantage!). How much for the whole kit?

  40. Tito, first of all massive kudos for going to such lengths to produce a 'real' short for testing these lenses. I think you and your crew did a great job, certainly considering the few hours you had. Regarding your questions, a few observations: What people say or think they want ("narrative lens tests FTW!"), is often a different thing from what they actually prove to be wanting (see also: relationships, gear, presidents and so on). Still, intent and purpose of the short might be somewhat too unclear for some viewers. On youtube the short is presented on it's (narrative) own without a disclaimer, intro or clearly stated goals within the video. It seems you can never be explicit enough. Perhaps you should put your explanation video at the end of the short for more clarity on it's purpose? What might be confusing for viewers is why you would still use those obviously compromised shots? In reality, you would never use shots that show as much vignetting as some in the test (...right?). So help us viewers put the technical details in context. The narrative speaks for itself, but the technical aspects are less self-evident, even with the cheat-sheet. Tell us what you learnt from each setup, what you were trying to test and what you're opinion on the lenses is. How would you incorporate what you learned from this test into 'real shooting'? Just talk over the short film, enlightening us with your newly acquired wisdom about those lenses! There, an idea for a new video for free! ;-) As always, keep it up man, look forward to each and every video of yours. LOL, nice one mate

  41. No, buy a GH5 or a6500. It will cost about the same as the NX1 but will have a slightly better camera with more lens options. Not saying that the NX1 is a bad camera its just that I cant recommend it when there are better options out there for the same price that are not dead systems.
    1 point
  42. I think you should have labelled up each shot saying what lens was used etc so people get a constant reminder that they are actually watching a test. Text on the black letterbox so it still doesn't ruin the pictures? Also (and now this is absolutely subjective and probably easy to suggest and harder to do..) I would have written a few events into the narrative to show the same scene/shot more than once but with different lenses. Like a character has a dejavu moment so he gets to see the same thing twice? Looks around then jumps back, rubs his eyes and sees it for the third time. This way you can make a comparision including all the lenses from the exact same POV and still have a narrative structure. Or you got 3 guys at a poker game trying to recall the same story but they remember it differently so they keep interrupting each other with corrections. Each of them is basically a lens showing the same scene but as they keep going on and on about what happened we get to see the the act in a few alternative variations. Rectilux as the handsome hunk, FM lens as the fat bastard and the Rangefinder as a hopeless barfly? Haha..

After some research and testing..........; 1, The bit-rate for 4k/UHD is 60mbps vs 45mbps for 2.7k i.e you get 2x as much bit-rate per pixel which should reduce artefacts and give more latitude in grading and once in a 1080p timeline the difference in resolution between 4k and 2.7k is virtually invisible. 2, D-Log doesn't look as flat and muddy as when I first tried it so maybe it's changed in the latest firmware and (unlike other Cameras LOG settings) you can still adjust contrast and saturation so it should be possible to get a good setting using D-LOG and higher contrast and saturation (more testing needed) 3, If you push the highlights past the zebras clipping point there is still headroom in the actual file so you can pull them back down with your grading tool of choice and not get any harsh clipping. This means you can be a lot more generous with exposure during capture and consequently avoid the nasty artefacts in the shadows. 4, Neat video seems to solve the flickering shadows. These 4 things combined could significantly improve the quality of the footage......

  44. @Henry Silvestriz Perfect then! I believe NX1 is a true (probably the first) hybrid. 28 megapixels APS-C BSI sensor, fast operation, unbelievable ergonomics, great H265 video that won't fill your cards and/or hard drives immediately. Couple it with a few great lenses and you are set. Only thing that considers me is that the 50-150mm is still expensive, and not readily available, and it would be probably great for such a trip. The 16-50 and the rest of the lenses are normal to low cost solutions. You, again, have to be aware that these are going to be your "last" NX buys, if you spend too much, then you are probably not going to gain that much back, but the camera is good to go for a few more years near the top. Look at it as a lease plan! Other solutions are the Nikon D7200 (not that good on video), and the new X-T20 maybe.

  47. Check out my picture of lens. From left to right. 2 Baby Hypergonars, 2 Kowa 1.75x Inflights, Kowa C35 1.5x, Bolex 16/32 and Bolex 8/19. The Kowa C35 has a much bigger back then Bolex 16/32 and the Kowa Inflight is much bigger then the C35.

  48. I honestly wish they would keep cineform in the camera's alongside Prores, I much prefer the Cineform codec.

  49. I just did a test, and I really like the colors I get when turning Picture Profile off and just shooting in Sunset Creative Style. It worked on my old NEX-5n to produce smoother gradients, and it looks like it gives good rich colors on the A7s as well. I think you do lose dynamic range in the highlights, but for medium and low-contrast scenes, I think it's a good way to get punchy yet natural colors. Anyone else tried this? Any thoughts?
