Honored Nikkor, you are in luck. I have created a LUT to use on all cameras footages that will result in excellent quality in class of Arri Alexa. Unfortunately my Paypal is not available due to the government of my country, but I will email the LUT to you personally. Price is normally one hundred US dollar, but for you honored member I give 50% discount so price is only $40!! Pleaae do not hesitate to PM me for my home address here in Cairo to send monies. DFD is far too limited. Its limited to Panasonic lenses only. Its limited to lenses with no optical defects so that the character of the out of focus areas are rendered the same between lenses. Its limited by the use of filters, which can greatly affect those out of focus areas; the shape of the bokeh, etc. They need to get phase detect on board.3 points

+100500 I've invested in all the best NX primes thinking to flavour 16-50S, plus i have Nikon mount Samyang 24mm/f1.4 and Samyang 16mm/f2.0. And you know what? I rarely use all the bunch, but 16-50S is almost there. Also i love little 16-50/3.5-5.6 power-zoom (which came with the camera). You would not believe, but it is the second run-and-gun lens i use - it is sharp, great AF (much-much better that any NX prime), OIS supports the video nicely...3 points

GH5 autofocus improvement on new firmware update for soon
Rinad Amir and one other reacted to Fritz Pierre for a topic
Agreed...but this is of course huge for them as a business and it's almost impossibly hard to satisfy everyone....if not AF it would be the "videoy" look (will Webster adopt this word into it's dictionary) or lack of DR or poor low light ability...as a business one has to pick your battles...personally I strongly doubt that they can beat Canon's AF system with a FW update, but again personally I prefer what they put in the camera as is...but then...many others disagree...well, we will know soon enough how well the FW update does. our friend on 3 men and an elephant just did a quick review of AF on his GH5 and seemed to find it quite acceptable for his use.2 points -

This is my debut work, that took me 2.5 years to finish. I've learned so much from this community, that I just had to post it here. This is a music video for the band where I sing. Shot on BMMCC with contax glass, rangefinder and isco s8 2x. Big shout out to @Tito Ferradans @richg101 @ken and @Hans Punk. You guys are all listed down in credits for providing so much help with getting into the whole anamorphic thing. I was making those credits in hurry and totally forgot to include @Bioskop.Inc so a special thanks and an apology goes to you!2 points -

SONY PMW F3 - "Direct Menu" where is it ?
Ricardo Constantino and one other reacted to BenEricson for a topic
They probably went with the LP-6 due to weight and size? The micro cinema always uses those batteries... Which also sucks. You know what, I couldn't tell you because I have never used the internal recording. I do like to over expose a stop or two at times to get clean shadows, I would image this is more of a problem with the low bitrate. It is seriously difficult to get the F3 to fall apart. I will say that I use the C300ii quite a bit and the image on the F3 is pretty similar, (besides crummy indoor lighting, where Canon does so well at staying bright and colorful.) I do think it has one of the best 1080p images available. You do need to know that unless you have upgraded to the 444 version of the F3, you will not be able to get 60p with the video assist. You can with the 7Q without the upgrade, but that is much more expensive and a lot bigger/heavier. Also, for whatever reason there is a bug that causes the bottom pixel to flicker when using the video assist and capturing 60p/3g. I buy directly from SWIT. These guys are really good about shipping. I ordered Monday at 4pm and they shipped it out the same day and I will have it tomorrow. I currently own a 63w but just purchased that bigger one because it was on sale. I'll probably buy another if it works out. These are seriously convenient. http://www.swit.us/dv-batteries.html I have been using Canon LUTS and I am really happy with the results. I am working on a longer project that will be graded professionally, very excited to see how far we can push the files. I attached a couple stills. I think in almost all of these, I am exposing ETTR. I am really happy with how much saturation is held when over exposing. I have the F3 rigged right now but no photos... This is a very minimal low footprint setup, could be used on a monopod or something.2 points -
Should I buy a Samsung NX1 now May 2017???
Francesco Tasselli and one other reacted to Marco Tecno for a topic
Sorry, but NX1 is a totally different camera from any Canon. Totally. You shoot ISO 100 with canon and push the shadows in post? TOTAL NOISE. You do the same with NX1? Much better results than native high ISO. Of course I'm not saying the NX1 is on par or better than 1DX MK2. It's 1 stop behind in noise level, but has 8MP more. And if you shoot ISO 100 even in low light and push in post...you'll be amazed. Even with 1/250 or higher. AF is another thing. Mirrorless are way different than DSLR in AF technique. I have read so many posts like yours (about D500 having more keepers). Simply...and sorry to say that, you don't use the right technique with NX1. Again, I'm not saying NX1 is on par or better with D500 in AF. Again, it has more MP and a totally different focusing system. you need to know exactly how it works to make the best out of it. And yet, from time to time it misses focus, but...believe in me, I have improved 500% my keepers rate with practice. Now, when I shoot some sports like bicicle races, basketball or tennis, I have near 100% keepers, something I never achieved with any other system. Of course, I'm referring to NX1 + 16-50S or, even better, 50-150S.2 points -
Why Color and Skintones are so tricky to get right
tomsemiterrific and one other reacted to Ed Andrews for a topic
Regardless of your lighting, other factors will affect skintones. You can have an LED with 100 CRI but if the person is sitting at a large orangey wood table, the light is going to be bouncing off that and giving a slight orangey cast to the face. Same with red carpets, snotty green sofas, big blue walls, etc. Sometimes you will have to tweak in post. I'm no expert but I always key the skintones in resolve, tweak hue vs hue and desaturate a bit, always helps.2 points -

The AF on the 1Dx II is really good, this is a test video for a project I will do for in August... don't look at the exposure issues because it was a 1h test mostly to see how to combine a DJI P4p and the 1Dx II. There are some scenes at speed on the skates filmed at 24 at 1.4 on the Ronin M using AF and it keeps up quite well... Filmed with both cameras at 4k but there are quite a bit of moments that I'm digitally zooming at 2x. 120 is at 1080p but is a bit on the soft side so probably is around 720p real resolution... comparing 4k 60fps to 1080p 120fps is really day and night but for short scenes I tend to use it quite a bit when I know that 60fps would not be enough...1 point

No Joke - RAW 4K on the 5D Mark III
hyalinejim reacted to tweak for a topic
It does matter in some programs though, because your footage will come out looking totally wacky if you shoot AutoWB as AutoWB doesn't apply the metadata to MLraw in the same way... I mean yeah, you could shoot auto and add possibly another pointless step to every file (at least in Resolve) if you want, anybody is free to do what they want after all. WB is just metadata, but if you set AutoWB some programs (like resolve) will then take the lowest possible setting for whitebalance and apply that to your files... for me this is just annoying and pointless to have to normalise every shot before you can even see what it is properly. If you set to a Kelvin figure (5400 as an example) you can just adjust later and no matter what program you open it in it's going to look somewhat normal. I prefer this approach.1 point -
No profile --flat or otherwise -- will be able to properly capture what you will be able to recover in post, so you might as well use it to help with other things. A punchy profile like Standard will help with manual focusing. Couple this with digic peaking + magic zoom, and you'll be surprised at what focusing precision is possible with just the camera display. Also, learning how the monitoring profile relates to the specific post workflow pays good dividends, especially if you are in the habit of exposing consistently. And if you know which profile value ends where in post, then all you need for exposure is the digital spotmeter (which is really the ultimate digital exposure tool anyway). For B&W Monochrome might be useful in that you get to view the tones only, without color distractions, and this might help with lighting choices and judging separation. But this can also be a detriment since color cues can help with space orientation and framing if there is movement in the shot. And the profile's mapping to grey values will not necessarily match the channel mix you will do in post, so it might be misleading.1 point

I literally have the ability to sell my 1DC and accessories and buy a 5D IV today. I would not do it. The 1DC has a mojo to it that is sorta indescribable. A 24-105 on it looks amazing even at F4 because of the full frameish 4k. One thing people fail to mention is the lack of cut off you get with the 1DC AND the really sharp and really high quality Super35 mode. I've shot super35 mode for times when 4k isn't needed and it holds up better than our C100 because of the better sensor. You can buy them at a steal today on the used market. I always use a monitor or evf tho and that kinda sucks but it's worth the trade off. I basically pretend that the 1DC is like an Arri Alexa Mini or RED camera and it suits my needs well. No AF for video but amazing 4k.1 point

Gh5 or 5d mk iv?
zetty reacted to Fritz Pierre for a topic
Just curious as to how many everybodies you are referring to with this quote???1 point -
Depending on price I'd jump on a C200. My current C100 is getting long in the tooth codec/fps/resolution wise. I'm guessing they'll go with the C300/XC15 4:2:2, 8-bit 305Mbps codec for 4K but hopefully surprise us with 10-bit to rival FS5. I've also been tempted to upgrade my 5D3 to 5D4 but have a real problem with the massive MJPEG codec, 1.7 crop & rolling shutter. Waiting to see what the 6D2 will be like. Could be Canon's opportunity to fix the 5D4's video shortcomings (although I don't expect a vast improvement).1 point
-
Agreed, wait a few days and see what Panasonic announces! Will hopefully give you the best of both worlds. JVC LS300 or Sony FS700 would also make interesting worthwhile supplementary cameras to your C100 But a C200 / C100 mk3 probably will lack TC or SDI. Will only get FHD 120fps if we're lucky, or maybe do something twisted like 120fps but in 720P. Will have 4K, but will be 4K 24p / UHD 30p and be 8bit 420 (maybe it will even be cropped like on the 5D mk4?? Kinda doubt it, but no kind of crippling Canon does would surprise me....) All for a price even higher than the current C100 mk2!1 point

SONY PMW F3 - "Direct Menu" where is it ?
IronFilm reacted to TheRenaissanceMan for a topic
Ugh, I know! Even internally the camera is great, but part of me knows I'm not getting everything I can out of it. What are the biggest things you notice jumping up to external 10-bit? Just a lot more robust in the grade? Nice to hear the recorder is no fuss. I should invest in one or two of those d-tap Sony batts; battery life on the assist sounds irritatingly short. Not sure why they went with LP-E6 over Sony NP-F. Got a link to the batts you use?1 point -

I really like it. Nice compact recorder. Nice UI. I bought a couple batteries that run d-tap out, so I can run everything off one sony battery. You need to run that camera with a recorder. Seriously beautiful clean images.1 point -
If it were my money, and I could afford either, I'd go with the Mark IV. Just take a look at Vimeo, IMO there are way more nicer 5D4 videos than GH5 videos even taking the fact that the 5D4 has been out 6 months longer into account. Also, I find it peculiar that everybody gets the GH5 or the a7sii and then try their damnest to create this LUT or that LUT to get Canon color... Ummm... Or they buy this camera or that camera because it has focus peaking but then complain about its autofocus. With Canon you don't really need focus peaking because the DPAF will be spot on every time.1 point
-
Sorry to de rail your question. Really depends on what your needs are. Sounds like you're a Canon fanboy so I'd say stick with Canon. The 5D IV has really nice 1080p at full frame with the AF. The MJPG isn't as much of a pain as people make it out to be. It's ONLY one small step of converting your footage. I own a 1DC and strategically plan when to convert to ProRes and go watch a show on Netflix or YouTube while it goes As soon as it's done I'm so happy with the color and the image quality. By the way I convert to 4k ProRes LT with a low bitrate. It cuts my original file sizes by 1/3 and it plays on my Mac like butter. Super smooth and easy to edit natively off an external hard drive on my MacBook Pro and iMac1 point

Why Color and Skintones are so tricky to get right
jcs reacted to ozmorphasis for a topic
At least several DP's that I know (and in a couple of cases hugely admire), will choose tungsten instruments when in a controlled environment for any kind of beauty shoot. They have access to the very best of the best daylight balanced LED, HMI, plasma, and Fluo sources, but will still choose tungsten when it's practical. It does look better for skin. I myself am moving toward all LEDs for practical reasons, especially now that they are getting good results. But, the best stuff I've shot has always been in natural daylight or tungsten.1 point -
Yikes. That's rough. How about breathe some new life into the XT2 with some old lenses. A set of Contax Zeiss should do the trick... the 35mm 1.4 would probably sing with that Classic Chrome Profile.1 point
-
I agree Ben. Color should be a spec. I guess what bugs me is the fact that canon seems to limit some of their cameras that can do more then what they're locked into doing. For example, look at the 5d iii and what the ML hack has been able to do with this cam. It shows the almost limitless capabilities that camera can do. But the 5d iii out of the box without jail breaking has hardly any video features. Why canon??? So canon makes cameras that are capable of being amazing but just blocks this from us and tries to force us to upgrade our camera. :/ And I get it. They don't want everyone buying just one of their cameras but that doesn't mean you completely make your dslrs crap. Look at Sony. Even though they have their FF mirrorless cams with a ton of video features people still buy a ton of fs5's and fs7's. I just don't get why canon can't do the same. I mean canon is just now putting c-log on the 5d iv! LOL Why now? Why not when the camera was released? C'mon canon! It's pretty ridiculous IMO.1 point

Yeah that Nepal video is gorgeous. Why don't you just order an NX500 from Seoul? They're fairly inexpensive on eBay... not the $350 I paid for mine new, but still not bad for a camera that is part of a cult classic line of cameras.1 point

Should I buy a Samsung NX1 now May 2017???
Marco Tecno reacted to Kisaha for a topic
These are from the cheap series, the 16-50pz is very small - good for video because of the zoom in/out buttons, OIS, sample variation applies greatly but usually is much better than Sony offerings. Good and small all arounder, good (very light) for gimbal work. I use it with NX1 on Ronin. Approximately 150euros used, preferably 120. 12-24, very sharp, very light, the only ultra wide zoom option any way. I like it a lot. The build quality is questionable. Back then it was one of the best of its kind. The 10-24 4f Fuji is the better such lens right now (double the price). Canon M 11-22 is equally good and cheap. Approximately 350euros used, preferably 280. 50-200 is a great lens for its class. All the copies I have used were surprisingly good, I have even used' em for night performances video covering indoors. Longer NX lens anyway. Not that good at the longer end. Approximately 250euros used, preferably 200. The cost estimations are the maximum prices I would pay for each. All these are quite good and I own them, but the NX system shines with the better ones, and especially the S lenses (16-50 and 50-150). The 30mm 2f (very slow AF though), 45mm 1.8f (fast focusing!), 60mm 2.8f macro (good for portraits as well), excellent 85mm 1.4f (dreamy like!) and my favorite fish eye 10mm 3.5f. Also the cheap ones are a bit slow (aperture wise), it could be problematic for high ISO video (and this is the greatest NX disadvantage!). How much for the whole kit?1 point -
