Would You Perhaps Be Interested In A Different GX80/85 Colour Profile???

So I've been playing with my new prodding device and.... Its interesting. What I did was record a clip of a colour chart from lets call it a well known brand of camera that is named after a primary colour and then put the same lens that was on that camera on to a GX85 and shot it again. Both clips were recorded onto a Ninja Inferno. What I was doing though was monitoring the recorded clip of the posh camera on the Ninja Inferno with the scope overlay on and then switching to the input to look at the GX85 and using the prodder to manipulate the parameters live and try and replicate the signature of the recording of the posh camera. I then tweaked a few things in FCPX to match a bit closer with the purpose of then taking those changes back to put them in the profile of the GX85 to match it better straight out of the camera. One of these images is the film log setting from the posh camera and the other one is the GX85. There are definitely challenges regarding noise with doing this on the cheaper camera so its obvious which is which but I've got some ideas about that. Tweaking the values and getting instant feedback was very productive and I think this may be the start of an interesting journey.4 points

Found one used for $600, haven't touched these since the M1: GOOD tiny flip-out touchscreen dpaf ibis canon color 60fps slomo BAD native lens select still shit soft 1080 no 4k price as new laughable meh video DR (raw stills at 100 are noice) paperthin 8bit files not worth trying to grade THOUGHTS An almost perfect consumer hybrid from Canon. Thank fuck for competition. Panasonic and Sony have woken the giant from a 5 year slumber. Forgot how much fun a tiny cam to snap pics and shoot a few family videos could be.2 points

The other issue with the C200
DBounce and one other reacted to Jaime Valles for a topic
I don't understand the issue. The C200 is the A cam, and the C200B is the B cam. That's only $13,500 for two incredible 4K RAW cameras with DPAF. They'll all match in color and lens selection and features. And if you need a C camera, then the XC10 at $2000 is great. How much cheaper do people want it to get? If the above is too expensive, you probably aren't in the market for a C200 anyway. Just get a couple of GH5 cameras and enjoy shooting 4K 10 bit 4:2:2.2 points -
Dipping the toe
Grimor and one other reacted to Justin Bacle for a topic
The cheapest you can go with good quality is with buying either : - an Isco Ultra-Star (the golden or red version) you should be able to find some around $200 (got mine for a lot less) - a Sankor 16D (or similar : Singer 16-D, Elmoscope I) You'll get a dual focus system with great optical performance (Isco is super sharp but doesn't flare, 16D is not that sharp at wide apertures, but it does flare) Either way, you should pay more than 200€ for that anamorphic adapter. You'll then need to find an adapter to be able to use it. Go grab a Redstan clamp, Rapido Clamp (or a vid-atlantic clamp if you're really down on money) usually between $50 and $100 So, No, you don't need to spend thousands to get decent quality. You just need to spend wisely. (Of course there are better anamorphic lenses out there, but as you are just dipping toes, there's no rush !) Be careful, by tipping a toe, you are entering the madness of anamorphics. Once you bought one adapter, there is now coming back. This is a point of no return !!! :D2 points -
Btw speaking of fashion @BTM_Pix I was working in NYC while the NY Fashion Show was running and I was talking to a photographer at my hotel who was there covering the show. So of course I asked him "Canon or Nikon?" Being a video hobbyist and unfamiliar with the professional photography world, I was initially surprised by his reply... "Who cares about the camera, they're all good enough and cheap enough, it's the lens investments that dictate your body choice." Yeah Pixel Vision would definitely capture the last leg in beautiful analog cassette tape.2 points

£150 Arriflex lenses on the GH5
TheRenaissanceMan and one other reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
Yes. Obviously the GH5 has the edge on the codec side with 10bit and it has slow-mo. Nearly everything else is better on the Olympus though, including the general 'feel' when using it. What is surprising about both is just how good the colour and skintones are... Canon have competition. I know I will keep both as they are too hard to sell... Obviously with the GH5 I don't absolutely need the E-M1 II but there is something about it that's compelling... a nicer feel in the hand and slightly better stabilisation with 90% of the video quality of the GH5.2 points -

samuel.cabral and one other reacted to BTM_Pix for a topic
It is indeed. Its a bit unfair on the GX85 to be honest because, as I suspected might happen with this prodder, there are some presumptions we make over its settings that might not be doing it any favours if all we're doing is correcting them with the exact inverse settings in post. And from the tweaks I was making in FCPX, I think thats exactly the case here as I was putting things in that I'd taken out in the profile so I think it can be done better. Which obviously I'll be trying to do. Iphone to Alexa is easy. Just wait about five years ! Obviously once you have it with roughly the same signature as the RED Film it will follow this through when you add FilmConvert etc and pick the RED Film preset. EDIT -2 points -

The GH5 has the chunkiest 10bit files I've ever seen for $2000. Some of the lenses are even more of a bargain. Read the full article1 point -
Yes they are. Last year, Canon was the 2nd best seller of mirrorless cameras in their home market. Getting 19% market share, they beat out Sony and Panasonic. Olympus was in the lead.1 point

Is it really only electronic? Haha. Man, I'm guilty of talking shit against estab because of what motion blur does to the image, but to be honest, after testing both cameras, the M5 and GX85 seemed to be identical in smoothing shake. End of the day, because it was used and I had a few EOSM accessories laying around, this camera was cheaper to own than a A6500 or GX85.1 point

Wait, how is stabilization top notch with Canon? They only have silly e-stabilization, no? And that embedded video... actually, the image quality isn't too great and you'd already only use the your best shots, but the guy knows his composition, editing, grading etc that makes up for it. Just goes to show that it's the one that presses the buttons that matters, not the device the buttons are placed on. For vloggers etc however, a Canon is just a breeze to work with, you could just shoot away, drop the footage on the timeline, cut the sequence and you're done. If... like... the content is the only thing that matters, I mean, there's enough shakey portrait mode videos shot on potatoes that have gone viral. Though... if you're want to add a touch of actual cinematography and want the most control and information captured as possible... you can't deny that a Sony A-series or Panny G-series is flippin' awesome. They've got more to offer than that point-n-shoot characteristic of anything that's Canon consumer range and especially Panasonic is doing it rather well, I'd say.1 point

I don't need the EVF, so I was thinking about picking up an M6 eventually. Pair it with the 22mm f/2 and it would be a great Pocket cam for casual shooting or interesting, lo-fi projects. I recently found this video shot handheld with the G7X Mark ii and think it looks pretty spectacular... With the DPAF of the M series, you could have a nice compact set up. I have an M10, which I plan on selling, but the focus peaking is the best I've ever used, so that's a plus too.1 point

Yes, I do have said camera (a RED Epic MX to be precise) so it was a completely flat test of the Film profile. Long story about why I've got one of these but as soon as it became apparent it was useless for stills extraction they were pushing it for I did a sub-lease deal for it with a mate of mine and I've only just recently been reunited with it. I shot one event with it (mind you it was the Tour de France so it counts as 27 events I suppose) but after three or four stages it ended up being used the most expensive wide angle remote stills camera in the world as it was just way too cumbersome to use. OK for fashion I suppose but useless for sports.1 point
-
@BTM_Pix that is a pretty cool test. So just to be clear, you found footage online from posh camera, or you have said posh camera? If it's the former, couldn't possible parameters in the record/upload/process/delivery chain cloud your test? If it's the latter, why are you mucking about with a GX85? I assume the bottom grab is from the GX85? Even still it's pretty darn close. Can you turn my iPhone into an Alexa Mini?1 point

Yeah, this is solid advice. @GlamourDave ML Raw aside, which I love, but I understand it isn't for everybody, the 80D/XC10 combo could be perfect. Throw in an H1/H2n, a lav or a Rode Video Micro and a video tripod head and you will have a solid set up.1 point

The 7D is a depreciating asset. I would seriously consider selling it off and getting an 80D to replace it, before the 7D loses any more value. The 80D image quality is better in photo and video, and its ergonomics are definitely better than the 7D's. It also uses cheaper media. Outside of the camera/lens debate, I would concentrate on 1. audio and 2. support. What you get in each category will depend on what you're shooting and how you want to shoot it, but the basics I outlined above will apply to most any situation.1 point

These look awesome. I almost bought a large kit of these alongside a 16mm film camera but my friend has an SRII so I just couldn't justify it. Still don't need them so I probably made the right choice passing on them, but.... wow that bokeh looks cool. I know DPs who shoot Cooke S2/S3s when they can't use anamorphic because it has some texture to it that looks good in motion. Similar rendering to this. Look at the prices of Super Baltars and Cookes. A coveted look.1 point -

Thanks, holographic car was made with 3d model of 911R in after effects. We use one led panel, my friend was just waving it above the car. Thanks, yeah, maybe I could make it a little bit shorter and more dynamic, the car owner wasnt very happy when i told him, that over 12 hour shoot became 1:20 seconds clip though It was just a short, passion project without any serious planning. With this clip i just wanted to motivate other exotic car owners in my area so i could film their cars1 point

Without pixel peeping and YouTube/online-streaming compression, it's hard to tell the difference between 1DX II 4K and 1DX II 1080p (ALL-I ~100Mbps) post sharpened + fine grain noise (watch in 4K; even harder to tell when watched in 1080p): I find the stock 1DX II picture styles don't look as good as the 5D3 (different color science and sensors), however you can tweak the stock picture styles or create all new ones which work really well. When targeting 1080p/online-streaming and doing long takes/events, 1DX II 1080p works well and the ~100Mbps ALL-I files are easily manageable (can use IPB to get even smaller file sizes. I would normally use the A7S II for this kind of event, however the Sony was fired after it overheated in a 74F room + the 1DX II has working/usable autofocus): While the 1DX II can make a fine B cam for the C200 (and C300 II in our case), for the price if not also needing stills, the C200 is a superior B cam for video (and A cam if using RAW/external and if/when Canon allows 10-bit 422 internally).1 point -

So the 5D/1DxII DCI 4k 4:2:2 8bit MJPG at 500 Mbits that you can edit in real time without transcoding even on a notebook it is insane but at the same time everybody is crying because the C200 does not have a DCI 4k 4:2:2 10bit at 400 Mbits…. and also everybody is eagerly awaiting the GH5 firmware that will allow an edit ready 4k 10bit 4:2:2 at 400 Mbits. But hey 400 Mbits is perfect and 500 is insane...... If you want to edit ready 4k without transcoding in a good quality you will end up with at around 400 Mbits anyhow…. IMO the best B cam for the C200 is another C200 or C200B. It is a big advantage to have two cameras the same that you know the pro and cons, the menus, the customization, the button layout, the expect output, the sensor characteristic, same DOF, same lens and crop factor, NDs, the AF behavior etc… Additionally you have the same battery, same media, same LCD etc… so if something breaks or is forgotten you mostly have a second one with you. Personally I already hate switching between 5D and 1Dx… So you will save time, have a perfect backup and probably at the save money. In my case if I will buy the C200 the B cam would be my 1Dx II because I use it a lot for photography and in particular for action photography but if I would only do video probably I would buy a C200 and C200B. If budget is an issue a C200 and a used 5D IV would be the best compromise IMO.1 point -

It's doubtful that CineLikeD was in their software when the GH3 was released but maybe it was snuck in during a FW update without anyone knowing. Peaking would be my first question with the GH3 and that would be pretty cool since that camera sells so cheap on the used market now.1 point -
This is how some future archeologist will find me, with the loop of incremental parameter changes still merrily being fired at a Panasonic G7 in the background. One of those where we don't like what we see on a histogram but we do like what we see in the actual image. There's a moral in there somewhere...1 point
-
Haha. Where am I going with it? I think you and I are in accord over how much received wisdom there is with much of this stuff. And truth be told I'm as guilty as anyone else for perpetuating much of it! When you consider the image controls available in a G7 etc you have the following : 8 Base colour profiles 4 Individual modifying parameters to those 8 (Saturation, Sharpness, Contrast, Noise Reduction) each of which have 11 possible settings (+5 to -5 and 0) 2 Global parameters (Highlight and Shadow) both of which have 11 possible settings (+5 to -5 and 0) That means that there are over 1.7 million different combinations. And thats without the additional Hue control that some Lumix cameras have. Oh and thats 1.7 million different combinations per profile. Can anyone honestly say they've tested all 14 million combinations to determine their definitive setup for these cameras? Obviously no one has, even though I know sometimes it feels like we have And on the basis that all of these parameters do actually make a difference, there could be some really interesting combinations of them that no one tries because the received wisdom (and lets be honest with 14 million combinations its no bad thing to use that) tells us that we should use a smallish core base and then tweak from there. Do we actually know, for example, if you have the noise reduction at +5 and the shadows at -5 and the highlights at +4 on a Natural profile with the saturation at 3 and the contrast at 2 and sharpness at -3 that these cameras don't suddenly look like you've got Kodachrome 64 in them? No, because we'd guess that those settings would make it look like it horrendous and not go near them. Does anyone even really know what happens if you have the noise reduction at +5? Does anyone even really know if it actually works at all as I can't imagine most people have ever tried it at that setting. And the reason we don't know, in my opinion, is that not only are there so many combinations but that its just too fiddly to be diving in and out of menus to change them and have the immediate feedback of what the interaction of those parameters actually looks like. So, where I'm going is to make that a lot easier and hopefully people can come across some happy accidents and make profiles that they don't have to spend hours tweaking later.....1 point

The other issue with the C200
Juxx989 reacted to fuzzynormal for a topic
It is an issue for me. Im part of a documentarian team that shoots, with my wife, an A and a B. As such, I'm frequently looking to rent or buy camera pairs and lenses. Typically, for our own self-financed films, I'll purchase the gear on deferred credit --and then re-sell the stuff 4 or 5 months down the road when everything is shot and in the can. The depreciation between the purchase and resell is what I consider my "rent" fees. Gear comes and goes this way and the cost of having the stuff while the work is happening is very reasonable. Cheaper and more flexible than actually renting. For instance, we bought another GH5 recently simply to pair with the initial one (purchased for another gig) and now we'll be using those GH5 cameras for the summer. Id love a bigger budget, eventually, to possibly employ this strategy for higher end cams such as the Canon C's, but the low overhead of the hybrid gear is effective for doing this sort of stuff on the cheap. Also, I like shooting doc video on a photo camera. I think it offers a certain comfort among subjects/people. It does often seem that they aren't indimidated by that as much as they are with "big" or "real" gear.1 point -

Panasonic GH5 - all is revealed!
TheRenaissanceMan reacted to Phil A for a topic
Using the GH5 for quite a bit of photography and some little video clips. Using it with a combination of the (really great) Voigtländer 17.5mm f/0.95, Olympus 12-40mm f/2.8 and the Samyang 35mm f/1.4 & 85mm f/1.4 both on a dumb adapter and a focal reducer. My personal opinion: it's maybe one of the least emotional/passion inducing cameras I ever had, I don't feel any excitement about it... but... it's probably the most usable camera I ever had. Can 100% approve and would recommend to 95% of all DSLR/MILC users without hesitation if asked. It doesn't have mind blowing dynamic range, the low light is just ok, the colors are good but not Fuji good, it's comically big for a camera with such a small sensor. But it just is very well thought out (nothing is perfect). The swively screen, high quality EVF, touch screen works well, WiFi function very usable, AF-S perfectly fine for my photography uses, focus peaking & magnification very well implemented, rather good battery run time (eh, I come from Sony!). I had none of the issues people complain about on the internet so maybe I'm just lucky. I think the only drawback is the native lens system if you come from an APS-C / FullFrame system with a good choice of fast native lenses and are completely set on that look.1 point -

Emulation is the initial step into developing craft. As it is with all endeavors that are creative. How artistic one is able to make things depends on the individual. Still, we all need a grasp of the craft to make the art. Some are good at it. Others? Not so much. Nothing new in that regard. This is why blogs about camera gear are far more traffic'ed than places where creative things are discussed. It's easy to dabble in the craft of things. Being truly creative and interesting is ridiculously hard-- not to mention emotionally vulnerable if you're doing it honestly. The "craft-vs-art-mix" is why I lean to making docs rather than narrative. I like to think I understand my abilities and limitations and angle my efforts in directions that are more appropriate for me.1 point -
