The versatility of the mount is writ large in this thread. Makes it all the more baffling why Panasonic didn't make it at least an option on their new camera.2 points

Amazingly, this video is how I found this thread and this 'hack' (is it a hack?) When looking to buy the GX80 I of course watched a million and one videos about it, from it, with it, through it, around it, and basically anywhere near it. After buying, I stopped searching, but then this came up in my suggested videos the day I got home from a lovely holiday, it was a great 'welcome home' present!2 points

More of a vent than anything and I know Panasonic are just as bad but.... All I wanted was a little travel camera..... I thought to myself "I quite fancy an RX100 IV. Genuinely pocketable, vloggable, a bit of slo-mo (which I don't really have), slog2 so it can be pushed a bit more.....and I can have a play about to see if I can get my hardware controller to be Sony compatible too" Easy. And then I started the, "Mmmm....the mark V though, better IS, touch screen" "Yeah but its so much dearer" "We're into A6300 territory there" "But then if we're going there, why not go a bit further and get the A6500" "No lenses though" "Yes but we've got a few Canon ones and they can be mounted cheaply. And with AF too" "Stop it now, its getting really expensive and way out of what we wanted" "OK, RX100 IV then" "Mind you, the RX10 III does all of that and more and has a 600mm equivalent lens" "Yes but now we're back in A6500 price range" "OK, how about the RX10 II, its way cheaper and has NDs" "Great idea. Not pocketable though" "OK, RX100 IV then" "You'll regret not getting the V though" "Shut up, its too much to be paying for a tiny sensor as it is" I've been like this cat for about a week now.1 point

I want to share a short script I wrote in python that does focus ramping time lapses for Panasonic cameras. I believe this is doable in magic lantern for Canon users but I've yet to see an implementation for Panasonic. Here is a short technical preview: Here is the python script I used to make this focus rack timelapse: https://github.com/lippyt/lumixlib/blob/master/focuslapse.py I'm sure that there are much more creative uses especially for shots with the majority of objects in the near-medium range.1 point

I don't necessarily dislike the results, and I can see where you're going with it. Will be interesting to see and hear your progress. I actually found a deal for a GX85 that was waaay to cheap to turn down. With the new hack, and my Samyang 21mm lens, I am giving these cams one last try before I sell off all my m4/3rds stuff and focus my efforts on Canon and Nikon.1 point

I like the RX100 IV that I have. But, it has serious deficiencies that remain in the V version - the overheating problem is worse than any Sony camera. I mean you cannot use the camera in high ambient heat settings and take 4K video. The camera will just stop after a few minutes of short clips. that is the true "paralysis." In the same exact settings the A7s ii just does fine. Second, the focus peaking is worthless, giving you no clue as to what is in focus. Forget manual focus (there is no magnify on the IV in 4K either, but I believe at least this was fixed for the V).1 point

If anyone is looking to get one then Jessops include a voucher for 500 free 7x5 prints and a 20x16 canvas if you buy an A7Sii from them. That's the sort of deal that you'd never get if you bought an Alexa. Possibly the most Alan Partridge special offer since he was pushing Rawlinson's doing slightly damaged chocolate oranges.1 point

Patience, patience All will be revealed when its finished. The hardware module part of my system does the WiFi part and I can interface to that with USB, wireless (as in the controller from the video) and Bluetooth. As I said in the other thread, I'm collecting a few different controllers (in about an hour actually) and at least one of them will be suitable for what you want. Bear in mind as I said at the start of this thread that the reason that the cinelike d happened was as a byproduct of me researching to make a hardware controller. And specifically one for a gimbal so its all in hand1 point

How cool would be have a Red and a Canon color profiles to easily match cameras?1 point -
And For My Next Trick....... (aka Why I was hacking the GX80 in the first place)
m0fe reacted to Amazeballs for a topic
Also, would you like to develop a phone app for that? I have couple of nice ideas how it should work, I can draw some sort of draft. The idea behind this is simple - you have a big ass slider at your finger tips, and you can set focus pull marks just by pressing those buttons, which will limit the focusing distance. This will make pulling focus a pleasant enjoyable experience! The draft is very basic, but you should get the idea. It also would be cool to add some gesture support, like - 1 finger scroll = normal speed. 2 fingers = more precise and slow. So a person would be able to switch those on the fly to his liking.1 point -

You are awesome man! So will it work on the device like this? they are both Bluetooth though. There are tons of similar controllers for 2-5$ everywhere. That would make my gimbal workflow so much better, incredible! upd: so you already confirmed that it will work on the previous page. Do we need to modify those devices somehow? How do you make them work with a camera via wifi?1 point -

There already is a separate thread for it. It will be updated when I'm back from my trip next week. I'm picking up some different controllers in the meantime so there will be other options. The smooth focus pull is being tuned but don't expect miracles with those lenses. If you go over to the other thread there is an early demo of just lens control (focus and zoom) on an LX100. http://www.eoshd.com/comments/topic/25104-and-for-my-next-trick-aka-why-i-was-hacking-the-gx80-in-the-first-place/ And another thread regarding a side development for profile tuning but which also shows a different control surface example.1 point -

BTM_Pix you are the man! I just watched your video with your wifi controller prototype for Panasonic cameras! That is so awesome! Would you like to create a separate topic for this? Cos I am eager to contribute, test and discuss. I have a dream of archiving a smooth remote pull focus on Panasonic cameras, using something like this, clipped to my Zhyiun crane as a second handle (btw that thing costs 5$). Or we could start from making a separate app for a smartphone.1 point -

Veydra, Voigtlander, or SLR Magic. Not the most compact, but solid metal primes that provide lovely imagery with little fuss. Veydra are the sharpest and have the best mechanics. Voigtlander have the fastest apertures and are the most widely available. SLR Magic are the most affordable and (imo) have the nicest aesthetic.1 point -
I'm sure you would love the M5 or M6. The image is quite noisy. I'm not sure why but it is. I just picked up an 80D personally and so far am really happy with it as I already own a Canon1DC that I use for higher end projects. Don't worry. No scripture in this one.1 point

My v5 has neither of those. Is there a v6 out with them? I don't think there's a better compact and the line has stayed at the top for what, 6 years now? The video colour comes right with the eoshd settings. For video note that it overheats after 5 min, short battery life, no (or very little) stabilisation. But super camera though. And I mean S UU PP EERRRR1 point

As above, stay away from Benq for colour accurate work, you can't calibrate broken monitor ;). Uniformity is much worse than in NEC's budget EA series. Unfortunately, for colour accurate work, monitors are expensive. Not only that, you also need to take care of your working environment. Proper colour accurate lighting, neutral colour walls, optimal light levels... You don't want your environment to affect how you see colours on the monitor, do you? So don't worry about it too much, unless you're going real pro and don't mind spending tons of money on it.1 point

Find the one that responds to protocols over HTTP and get that one I know what you mean though - I have the same dilemmas, in the end Mk IV has stood the test of time and I didn't feel upgraditus coming on... The A6300 and A6500 on the other hand, I regret buying.1 point -
I've been asked by Private Message regarding using the higher ISO's in recording. Ordinarily, the extended ISOs are for stills only but there is a way round it for G7 owners at least. On the GX80 it is always clamped at 6400 irrespective, so when you go into video mode it will always revert to this setting if you have an ISO set above that. On the G7 however, if I instigate the recording with my controller then I can then change it beyond 6400 and it will accept it. I have a trick with the hardware controller so that when you put it in record it re-sends the currently set ISO so if you have it on 12800 on the controller it will record a tiny fragment at 6400 but then switch to the 12800 If you want to try this manually you can by just putting your G7 in record at 6400 and sending the higher ISO command form a browser. My feeling is that this will probably work for other cameras too (except the GX80 where it definitely doesn't) so if you can test it and let people know that would be great. With regard to asking questions by Private Message - and please do not take this the wrong way as I'm really pleased this has sparked so much interest - but can I just ask that people put them in here instead, as to me this should very much be a community project so everyone will benefit from the shared information and there is a much broader range of model variants represented here that people can share the testing on as well. Any love for the Canon EOS M5?
samuel.cabral reacted to mercer for a topic
Don't get me wrong, Canon infuriates me sometimes. Within the next 6 months I am probably going to re-enter the 4K market. I was hoping it was going to be the 6Dii but now it looks like they're not going to include 4K in their $2000 camera. I find that to be absolutely ridiculous and non sensical. If the rumored FF mirrorless is released by the end of the year and it has 4K, I will probably be a customer. I already have a couple EF lenses. Since I'm in no rush right now to get a 4K camera, I can wait a while, but if they don't include 4K in that FF mirrorless, then I will probably sell my EF lenses, shoot ML Raw with my Nikkors and then probably get an Olympus or a GH5... as much as I don't really want a GH5, you are right, the features are undeniable. Of course I could go with a D7500 as well and be just as happy as I would with a Canon... even though the crop in 4K is mildly irritating... the footage I've seen from the D500 with its identical sensor and video features, has been pretty impressive. In the meantime, I am looking for a pocket/glove box cam. Something casual for snapshots and the occasional video. I would rather have Canon color and good autofocus, plus 60p for slow motion. That cam I will buy by the end of the summer and it will most likely be either the G7Xii or the EOS-M6. I haven't decided yet. But I love the video I posted earlier from the G7Xii so I am leaning in that direction. The color, IS and focus tracking looks phenomenal to me... for what it is. Also, Canon gets knocked a lot for their soft 1080p, but when I see video shot well with a Canon DSLR, it makes me happy. I don't ever think if only that was in 4K, it would be better. I mean look at this video. It was mostly shot with a Canon t5i and some shots with a G85, and even though I can pretty much pick out the shots that are Panny, I didn't like the rest of the video any less, in fact I would have been happy if the G85 shots weren't included...1 point -
It indeed looks like either part of an optical printer or reconfigured to or from print duplication use. Seen this lens being re-sold 2 or 3 times from different sellers without much time between auctions - which raises alarm bells as to its real practicality for filmmaking use (and where is footage of it at infinity and variable stops?). No doubt the optics are going to be top notch but I'd want to be assured that its focus can hit infinity with that aperture inside (causing added space between optics), since I would presume that lens was always intended for closeup duplication use, as part of a specific optical printer or telecine machine. I suspect that the variable aperture inside the lens is not going to make the image much sharper when coupled with a taking lens, but rather cut the light transmission to the taking lens and dramatically increase vignette. In a nutshell, if it was the wonder lens that it is supposed to be, where is example footage of it resolving infinity focus and its results when stopping down with its internal aperture? EDIT: Found an expired eBay auction that sold for $250 that confirms my hunch... "This is is multiple lens assembly that was used at Deluxe Film Laboratories in Hollywood for 35mm anamorphic conversion to flat formats for theatrical trailers. It should not be confused with camera or projector lenses. Printing lenses are ulta sharp intermediate lenses designed to resolve 35mm camera original high resolution color negative without distortion. The assembly consists consists of three separate lenses, each of which may be separated for individual use: Isco Lens VII - Base Lens Isco Anamophis Printing Lense 2x with Manual IRIS Ring (Like F-Stop) Isco Lens III - Output Lens I highly doubt the Isco printing lens can hit infinity without stopping it down to a crazy small aperture. You can see from the original configuration that it is basically used for near-macro focus distances, as part of an optical conversion chain. If it could indeed be used for filmmaking use, I would be interested to hear how on earth you would achieve infinity focus. I think the current seller on eBay is a member of this forum @Hunterj11 perhaps they can shine some light on this lens?1 point

ETTR: Noise, Dynamic Range and Skin Tones
samuel.cabral reacted to BTM_Pix for a topic
It is indeed. Its a bit unfair on the GX85 to be honest because, as I suspected might happen with this prodder, there are some presumptions we make over its settings that might not be doing it any favours if all we're doing is correcting them with the exact inverse settings in post. And from the tweaks I was making in FCPX, I think thats exactly the case here as I was putting things in that I'd taken out in the profile so I think it can be done better. Which obviously I'll be trying to do. Iphone to Alexa is easy. Just wait about five years ! Obviously once you have it with roughly the same signature as the RED Film it will follow this through when you add FilmConvert etc and pick the RED Film preset. EDIT -1 point -
ETTR: Noise, Dynamic Range and Skin Tones
kidzrevil reacted to Fredrik Lyhne for a topic
Here's the graded shot of the new shot which I would say is a normal exposure. With this shot and the one "ETTR"? from yesterday I had to lower the midtones, but on this shot I could also raise the highlights slightly without loosing to much detail on the shirt. I would say it's a very good exposure for skin tones, but the shirt is loosing some detail, so I think 1/3 stop less would be perfect. On the ETTR I had to lower the midtones, but can't raise the highlights more and lowering them doesn't help with the skin tones or the shirt. On the -2/3 I had to raise the highlights and because the skin tones and shirt was not overexposed it didn't affect the image in bad way. I still think this was the best overall exposure of the bunch, but the new shot from today is also good. To match the brightness of the ETTR and -2/3 I raised the highlights even more from +5 to +10 and even though it seemed to clip the red channel slightly it still look better then the other shots I think. @jagnje we're just trying to find the best exposure settings as these cameras can go from good to great if you nail the exposure. And looking at these test I would say it's worth the time and effort we put into it I understand that ETTR is the way do to it with many cameras, but these cameras seems to perform best when they are slightly underexposed.1 point
