  1. At that price, if you hate it, you'll get your money back on it all day long. Oddly enough - if as most 1DCs its got sub 20K clicks on it - you could probably make a profit selling it to someone who wants a 1Dx as you won't get any change out of £3K for a similar one of those. And the 1Dx is likely to have had a much tougher life so the 1DC would be a much more attractive proposition. I have a rapidly expiring Nikon D4 and the at these prices the 1DC is batting its eyelashes at me as exactly that sort of proposition. I have enough short to medium Canon glass to use it for work alongside the Nikon for long stuff and of course I get a massive bonus feature thrown in with the 4K. I already get some open mouthed reactions from other photographers when covering games with a combined Nikon and Fuji setup but its nothing compared to doing it with an unholy alliance of Nikon and Canon! I did it a few years ago and people looked genuinely frightened at what might happen

  2. I jumped ship, sold my NX1 16-50S & 50-150S. I purchased the a7ii (returned it, I really like 4k recording and this didn't have it), a6500 (still have it, I love the eye AF but the camera is just too small for my hands) and tried the a7rii (returned it, picture quality was good but camera operation was too slow). I am really thinking about purchasing the NX1 again as the only reason i sold it was because I was afraid that if I needed service, no one could repair it. I loved everything about the NX1 the operation, handling and the picture color/quality. The NX1 was easier to take photos with. Also, I can't afford Sony's 2.8 lenses. So I'm also trying to decide to if I should buy the NX1 again.

  3. Just to reiterate: in regards to a sensor with a given quality/configuration, it is the photosite size that influences maximum sensitivity/DR -- not the size of the sensor. When comparing a full frame sensor with zillion megapixels (tiny photosites) to a M4/3 with much fewer, larger photosites, the M4/3 sensor will exhibit a higher maximum usable sensitivity and a greater capture dynamic range. Again, this principle assumes that all other variables are equal, such as: the sensor internal configuration/design; the A/D converter; post-sensor NR; etc. Of course, if we compare a full frame sensor and a M4/3 sensor having the same resolution and the same internal configuration/design, the full frame sensor will have larger photosites, and thus greater max sensitivity and dynamic range. So, if you embiggen the photosites, you generally embiggen the sensitivity/DR, regardless of what the "jabronis" say. embiggen:

    Sony Slog2 Free LUTs

Hey everyone, I created custom Slog2 S-Gamut3.cine to REC709 LUTs because I wasn’t not very happy with the official LUTs or the ones that included with Davinci Resolve. Inside the archive you will find technical Slog2 into REC709 LUT as well as more stylized LUTs for specific looks. I also included versions with exposure compensation -1EV for overexposed material and official LUTs by Sony for your convenience. Get it here

  7. Unfortunately camera store are killed by the internet. Last time a brought something from a camera store was in 2004.... The price pressure is too big for them to survive and we consumer we don't want to pay more than what we find online.... Canon, Nikon, Sony they can do whatever they want but they will never win back smartphone users and smartphones are getting better and better to the point that an average consumer does not care at all about other cameras. This is why the race is the Pro and Semi Pro/Serious hobbits. On the other hand I see more and more pro using very expensive equipment like REDs etc filming for Instagram and co for big companies to separate their post from the masses of phone imagery...

  9. I have no problem with anyone believing this speculative metaphysics if that is what they need to do. But it is "belief". It isn't "physics" or science - there is no "evidence" or reproducible fact or experimental hypothesis. In the strict use of the term it is non-sense. Appealing to "quantum-this" or "quantum-that" might look good but really just exhibits an ignorance of quantum mechanics (which by definition operates at a quantum scale). The Higgs field is not, as far as I am aware, something one can opt out of. Of course, much like any religious belief system, the absence of verification also implies the absence of empirical falsification hence the comparative ease with which adherents can fabricate arguments which prima facie support their views: "of course you can't see aliens, they wear invisibility cloaks". Personally I'm happy to live within the boundaries of what is real and watch what is not on the big screen.

  10. Sometimes I also notice the difference when I need to stop down a large sensor to get the same DOF as the m4/3. Which results in a darker image and the large sensor is already at max ISO. The shutter is of course fixed. So a m4/3 can definitely have better lowlight in certain situations.

  12. Dear EOSHD community, I am an independent french graphic designer and I regularly work in photo and video. Over the years, I created a collection of 3D LUT files to ease the color grading of my projects. Recently I created a pack with my 38 original LUTs. They are profiled on high-resolution color matrix and were built to preserve skin tones as best as possible. I had the chance to work with many different cameras and I spent a lot of time creating these looks and testing on raw footages, from 5DMKII and 7D with Magic Lantern, GH4, A7S, BMPC 4K, and stills from RED EPIC. About HDSLR, these LUTs are calibrated on CineStyle/Cinelike profiles. Also in my pack is included a LUT to properly « flat » a footage and get a good working basis before grading. Website for more infos : http://luts.iwltbap.com Instagram with short video samples : https://instagram.com/luts At the end of this post you will find some sample images before-after. My LUTs pack is for sale $20, but I created a discount code of -25% for EOSHD community. So you can get it for $15 instead of $20 via : https://sellfy.com/p/Ainy/-EOSHD My pack is regularly updated with new LUTs and all updates are free. On my website you can download a free LUT with the famous teal-orange look. Also, I offer for free a 4K film grain based on 35mm film scans (10sec video encoded in Apple ProRes 422 at 25fps). Hope you will like my LUTs. Best, Benjamin

  13. So in my personal experience... Just in Berlin two great stores I regularly visited have simply disappeared in the month I was away! So sad to see Photo-Stade go. He was always a true enthusiast and owned an FS7 In the bigger retailers for the first time the camera sections have been shunted to the back of the floor or in some cases an upper floor instead of ground/first. Even at Manchester airport I noticed the cameras had been moved to the back. If Canon and Nikon don't get their finger out soon and start innovating and winning back smartphone users the whole industry is going to suffer, not just the corporate giants (who can move into medical and other profitable sections and survive just fine). It's the whole ecosystem that's at stake.

Once I figured out how they did it, I didn't want to publish this material. However, it's important that we challenge the people behind these hoaxes. If done by private individuals (vs. govcorp), they are wittingly or unwittingly contributing negatively to the information war. If they are using Kevlar or similar string/thread, that could be very dangerous to light aircraft and airliners. Shot on the 1DX II in 4K (sky video), 24-105F4L and 70-200 F2.8L II, full resolution stills processed in Adobe Camera RAW:

I think it's easy to be pessimistic about young people's obsession with phone cameras and snapchat but before that it was television and of the TV generation an awful lot still found the time to become passionate about photography. If anything the abundance of phone cameras should allow more people to discover if they have an interest in it to take it further. The problem is not the device though, it's the narcissism. That element is having a subversive impact. People take pictures for different reasons now. Mainly to show off on social media or to offer a commentary on an aspect of life. Before the internet, photography was for yourself and maybe your friends if they could be bothered to look at the prints and family albums afterwards. If the main purpose of the camera for the masses is social media, then of course a non-connected camera is going to be a dead dodo to the vast majority of users, or indeed any non-phone camera. I really think image quality is good enough on phones for the consumer not to bother looking at alternatives, so even if a Canon branded phone came out, it would have to be a better phone than what Apple do and that is just not going to happen. They couldn't sell meaningful quantities of it based on the camera quality alone. I agree that cameras could all end up costing more as a result of what's happening. The shift has begun already and there is definitely a trend for enthusiast and pro models to get more focus and less of the consumer stuff... A6000 was a long time ago. Since then, it has morphed into a prosumer camera. Same with Panasonic G85 if you compare to G5 era stuff. Serious pro camera market is a good place to be because you're not marketing to indifferent teenagers at $300. I think the enthusiast market is actually big enough to support profitable efforts from the major companies... it is the low-end $800 and under that is going to go away because they can't sell enough of it. High added value models don't need to sell as many because the margins are much bigger. Let me know if you're in town again. I was in the UK when you were last here getting rained on! The camera section at Saturn used to be really busy and it is only in the past 2 years it has tailed off... It is a dramatic difference. Sometimes it is entirely empty at peak shopping times and there are more people browsing light bulbs than lenses.

I made a quick comparison between the Fuji XF 50mm f2.0 WR and the 56mm f1.2. The AF is faster on the 50 but surprisingly the 56mm is better for video AF. At least in my test. But since I never used the AF for video before that, nor since, I don't know for other situations. Any who, both lenses are great.

  19. @Andrew Reid My generation (16-20 years old) has ZERO interest in using proper video/photo cameras. ZERO...All people use extensively their smartphones, they want it "as simple as possible" and aim to post as fast as possible the results on social media. Facebook is for many young people BS, Instagram and SnapChat are nowadays king...An own website/blog? Muahaha....It has to be quick and dirty...NO EFFORTS (saving for buy, handling, shooting, editing, education, etc.), please... "Winning back smartphone users"? This would be really hard (and costly) to do, as young users are generally lazy and don't want to spend any time with fiddling and properly operating a camera. The formula simply is: "As simple and automated as possible to shoot and share". And never forget the costs: Most of my colleagues spend 30-50 EUR / month for "all net flat" mobile calling/internet fees, including a smartphone usage for 2 years....So no cash needed to buy a smartphone. This business model for "selling" smartphones is impossible to do for a camera manufacturer. In my school there are about 1.500 scholars. I know very many people, but only FOUR scholars owning/operating a DSLR/MILC camera. Camera stores? It's hard for them (not for the big electronic discounters, but for smaller, specialized camera stores)...Generally diminished camera sales, very small margins and customers expecting top advice, but then going home and ordering online for cheapest price...For 95% of stores it's even impossible to get in the costs for rental...

In college I worked on Navy and Marine bases in San Diego selling computers. You learned to respect the base MPs and didn't ever wander off into restricted areas; generally they were pretty cool. Area 51 private security (EG&G) on public land is authorized to shoot with deadly force and aren't accountable for their actions. Folks who worked at Area 51 and got sick/died had no recourse in court either. Messing with these guys is a bad idea- what's the point? Wonder how many drones they shoot down- a directed EM weapon could shoot them down appearing as a malfunction. They also have technology to accurately track transmitter sources, so folks would likely get arrested or worse. Or as you say they could have blown all the money the same way Wall Street does (you know what I'm talking about). Thus the macho armed responses are to keep people from finding out we got diddly squat for our tax dollars I contacted George Knapp for an interview for Cosmic Flow while in Henderson Nevada studying NLP for a month. He was booked solid but was cool enough to reply. I've seen some George Knapp, Bob Lazar & crew Area 51 footage (documentaries) that look pretty compelling, shot circa 1989 (before consumer drones etc.). Bob Lazar is an interesting character- telling the truth, hoaxer, psy-op, or combo?

Haha right on. The SR-71 was Kelly Johnson and Ben Rich's (public) masterpiece. What they created in secret would probably blow our minds even today. Did you know that the fuel tanks leak during take off in order to be able to properly seal once at cruise speed due to heating? After taking off they'd have to do an in-flight refuel before starting their mission. And folks used to say that "if Man was meant to fly, he'd have wings. But he did fly. He discovered he had to." Oh wait that was Star Trek https://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Star_Trek:_The_Original_Series. But they did say that around the time of the Wright brothers. Similar things regarding the Model-T vs. the horse. Folks even believed there was a Sound Barrier that couldn't be broken. Speaking of Star Trek, in Back to the Future, the Hoverboard was supposed to have been invented by 2015. We probably could have had the Hoverboard even before 2015 (not just a lame Lexus ad) if electrogravitics hadn't been classified Cosmic Top Secret (of course I made that up, if it was Cosmic Top Secret or whatever secret decoder ring name they gave it, I surely wouldn't know about it)

@Snowfun @Orangenz where in this thread did I mention quantum anything? The math and physics I referenced I am familiar with enough to write a rigid+soft body and fluid dynamics based internet multiplayer racing simulation which can hide over 300ms of lag. And the physical surface is defined by piece-wise continuous 3D cubic polynomial surfaces, for which I perform a Newton-search ray-cast to find the tire contact patch points. That's why I called it Amazing Curves. All other games ray-intersect polygons then smooth things out. I do the opposite, ray cast a smooth surface, then apply a bump/displacement map to make rough when needed. This all runs in real-time, 100+ fps on modest hardware (over 10 years old). I wrote this from scratch- all the physics is custom using using a custom energy-accurate integrator (engine sound came from a Z06 Corvette I owned): @Orangenz perhaps I misunderstood but it sounded like you were saying I don't understand velocity? As in v = x*m/s? Or a = f/m, v1 = v0 + 1/2a*dt^2? And if you use a constant time step you can replace forces with stable-limit impulses :). Of course if we use a Verlet integrator we don't need to use velocity at all (implicit in the integration). I was discussing velocity and view vectors, are you familiar with linear algebra and vector mechanics? @Snowfun "Appealing to "quantum-this" or "quantum-that" might look good but really just exhibits an ignorance of quantum mechanics (which by definition operates at a quantum scale). The Higgs field is not, as far as I am aware, something one can opt out of." Since you brought up quantum physics operates at the quantum scale, that's like saying particle physics operates at particle scale, self defining and thus meaningless outside itself. The smallest measurable scale in the universe is the Planck Length and the shortest measurable amount of time is Planck Time. This means the Universe appears to be quantized, just like a computer! But, so what? What does any of this have to do with actual, real-world experiments that back up the predictions that a) Warp drives are possible, and b) That apparent mass/gravity effects can be changed with electromagnetism. Here are the links again in case you missed them earlier: https://www.wired.com/1998/03/antigravity/, https://www.researchgate.net/publication/281439915_Gravity-Superconductors_Interactions_Historical_Background, http://www.express.co.uk/news/science/765861/China-beaten-Nasa-warp-drive-technology. If you have links which refute or debunk any of these links, please share them. Regarding the Higgs boson and Higgs field theories: while theory did kind of predict the mass of the Higgs boson, the whole thing is a fuzzy, sloppy guesstimate, applying to multiple possible theories: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Higgs_boson. Thus, it's probably wrong. That's the one thing we can say about physics: what we know today is only a rough approximation and is effectively wrong, such as the Newtonian model breaking down at both the quantum (very small) and relativistic scales (very large). None of this really matters since we're seeing repeatable real-world results in lab tests, some of which are publicly many years old. Again, who knows how far they've gotten in 57 years in electrogravitics since they went totally silent! @kaylee hope you enjoyed the video

    Sirui Monopod Review

One day last week I was reading a post about the Blackmagic Micro Cinema Camera, when I read a comment by @Zak Forsman regarding the Sirui video monopod. It was perfect timing because I was in the middle of searching for a good monopod. I had narrowed my choices down to a model by a company name Cinetree and a Manfrotto model. I had heard of Sirui but never read any reviews on it. Zak gave it a glowing recommendation, so I headed over to eBay to check it out. Luckily, I found a "New Other" model for sale at a 30% discount... Sold. The monopod arrived 2 or 3 days later and I was immediately impressed with the build quality and how lightweight it was. The fluid pan function is butter smooth and the tilting, swivel base is just as smooth as the panning. The built in foldable feet are sturdy. But when I extended the legs, the top and bottom section was tight, I could barely extend them. I figured that this is why it was sold as new other... it was probably a return. I, immediately, went over to Amazon and read some reviews and the tight leg seems to be a common flaw of this unit. Apparently, when the sections of the leg are extended with a lot of force, the female metal end digs into the male plastic guide cap and scrapes off shavings of plastic, the leg gets clogged and it becomes very tight to open and close. Some buyers received their monopod that way, others had the issue occur over time and others never had a problem at all. I had two options, pack it up and return it, or take it apart and fix it. Since every other aspect of the monopod: the price, the fluid pan, the swivel, tilting base and oversized feet were exactly what I've been looking for, I chose the latter... take it apart and clean it. In less than 10 minutes, I had the monopod sections apart, cleaned, relubricated, with WD-40, and reassembled. It works just as new. Perfect. I attached a video of some clips I took yesterday down the shore. After about a half dozen cups of coffee and a half a pack of cigarettes... I realized I need a little more practice with it... or less vices that cause uncontrollable arm spasms. But either way, I am extremely happy with it and it is worth every penny I paid for it. Does it replace a tripod with a good fluid head or a steadicam? No. But for run and gun shooting with a small footprint, it's exactly what I was looking for.

  28. I disagree about the A7Rii having better low light performance than the A7sii (or A7s first version) though it is a lot closer than many other cameras and only at very high ISOs. DXO ISO scores (IE the limit they find acceptable using their criteria) A7Rii ISO 2993, A7sii ISO 3434 and A7s ISO 3702. Some of that may be down to sample variation and limited cameras used. DR on the other hand doesn't necessary follow in that it seems manufacturers can make a camera either very good at high ISO or have very good dynamic range but not quite both though all recent FF cameras do have higher DR than just about all M43 cameras. The Pentax K1 maybe comes closest being second overall for DR and still having high ISO over ISO 3200. DR seems to be all over the place in terms of pixel size but generally the larger the sensor the better. Interestingly, the Nikon D7200 rates third overall in the DXO general database for DR despite being an APSC camera https://www.dxomark.com/best-cameras-for-landscape-under-45200-dollars Maybe, except that for M43 you NEED a fast lens and you can also use a fast lens FF. The reason I especially like the A7s is that I can use ANY lens in any light and that includes fast and slow and it means I can use fast lenses with faster shutter speeds.

  29. My latest (unfinished) video is like 80% A6500 and 20% the FS5. This is purely down to camera movement, there's a lot of it. Doing much more of this. FS5 was used for more static angles and a few 200fps shots. An £8.5k camera package playing 2nd fiddle to a £1.5k camera with terrible battery life and rolling shutter. Madness?

  30. Like I said, it isnt real life and one cant simply say, all big sensors have better iso than smaller. But either way its not a fact at all, even with same generations. My old 2013 GM1 kills my APSC from 2016. So already the rule goes out the window. The whole thing is absolutely pointless for me as a creator. Again, imo, sensor size is borderline irrelevant. I look at the camera and how I can use it.

    Lenses

Personally, the 55 1.8 is the lens for me. It can be found a LOT less than its list price (I paid a lot less even fairly early on) but to me it is worth every cent and has spoilt my lust for older 50-58mm normal lenses (I have had a lot and still have a few that no longer get a look in unless used on my M43 camera). What about the Samyang 50 1.4 AF FE mount lens if price is an issue? Also, the 28-70 FE kit lens is a nice enough handy lens (at least on the lower pixel count cameras) and for me, my native E mount lenses are the 55 and 28-70 and will soon add the 85 1.8 and that will do until I add another next year (maybe) with adapted lenses for the rest.

  35. I think you have just answered your own question. Pixel size of course matters but m43 and aps-c/aps-h cameras have a bigger target audience and bring significantly greater sales to these companies than FF, so R&D departments are finding ways to make them more efficient, regarding light gathering and also codec wise, as stated above. It's the same reason that 1/2.3 sensors are evolving quite rapidly these days.
