  4. Well, over a year later I went to the store to buy the X-T20. Came out with the X-T2. A few weeks later I switched to the X-Pro. There is also a little tiny bit of a video sample from the X-Pro2 in there. But in the full review I will definitely have more, because Im really impresses. Within its limitations.

  5. Here's scenes from a feature I'm shooting on the NX1. All using the tracking autofocus. I hope this camera lasts a LONG time, because even after all these years, its footage and capabilities are gorgeous and unmatched. https://vimeo.com/225352203

  7. Disappointed at the moment. When I feed it a 4:3 signal from the GH5 and activate 2x desqueeze it cuts off about 30% of the image on the sides. It's like it won't scale the image down enough to fit on the screen.

  8. No, there are more people today taking pictures with a Samsung smartphone, that can also take pictures. No one refers to a smartphone as a camera. They call it their phone. And in any case, this comparison is not between as Samsung phone vs a camera... I already did that shootout, and in some respects the phone was better. But that said I would not consider it my goto tool for video, on a real project. It's mainly used out of convenience. As a former NX1 owner, I can tell you it was a great camera. The touch screen /UI was far and away the best I have used. The camera felt balanced. And I have many great pictures from it. As a video capture device it was capable. Though I found it had a tendency to crush the black levels. Lens selection was somewhat inflexible. And frankly build quality was subpar for it's place in the market. In the end I left that system for the Sony α, then later I turned my attention back to Canon (still great btw), and most recently I have been exploring the GH5, which might be the best of breed to date. There can be little doubt that if Samsung had been determined to own the market they could have. They have the tech, and I would have put a NX1MK2 on my short list of must have cameras. It's a shame that Samsung bailed on their user base. I know I will never trust them again in the camera space, and I am certain I am not alone in this thinking. The take away here is none of this matters. Better, worse... Samsung no longer makes enthusiast cameras. And if they ever come back, they are going to need to do something to assure users that they are in it for the long haul.

  9. Hey Glenn, awesome find. Visually one of the best DSLM/R cinema verite style narrative shorts I´ve seen in months, if not the best. The montage is stunning, leaving more impact on me than the highly acclaimed eyecandy piece "Towers of Turkey". Thanks for showing, very inspiring piece for every single no/low budget filmlover/maker. Colors are magnificient. @meudig, Panasonic G85, better HD than GX85 and mic in. IBIS, 4K, 60p, strong 8bit codec, CineD, nice colors. It doesn´t have audio out though.

  11. Well, what does a D7500 compare to... a Canon 80D? And how are they doing again in comparison? You want to talk smack, have a go at Canon. Nikon might be a little traditional and late to the party, that's because they're like parents: oldschool and need a while to catch up to the new age things. Once they do, they actually try to implement that shit. Really doesn't make that much sense to compare a system or camera based on a few little numbers on DxOMark if you're asking me. Hopefully Nikon is going to get into mirrorless APS-C. A camera like my D5300 is great on a sensor and results level, but I just hate the friggin' flippin' mirror that clacks around taking stills in liveview and it doesn't have any of the mirrorless bells 'n whistles either for any type of shooting. From what I gathered it seems they might be aiming at a mirrorless camera that is fullframe. Shame, because mirrorless allows for downsizing and while I like the occassional 35mm image circle throwing glass, it's also nice to have more compact options and APS-C/S35 gives you just that without sacrificing too much performance. And let's not forget, there's still focal reducers to get you back to FF should that be your thing. Lenses really define the compactness of a system, not so much the body. That's why Sony would've been better off having a mirrorless APS-C camera that's more like a A7-series camera than an A6x00-series one. Not that their APS-C line-up is alive and kicking, but atleast they'd have the literal room for improvements that plagues their too crammed full A6x00 bodies. Wish Nikon would go the Fujifilm route. The X-T2 is such a dope camera, a camera like that with a few tweaks (I'm talking sensor stabilization, I'm talking frontfacing touchscreen, I'm talking headphone port on the body itself and all that Gucci fuego) could suck up the whole MFT market and former traditional DSLR shooters.

  13. The D5's low ISO dynamic range is obviously a trade-off for it's ability to maintain good dynamic range at very high ISOs. It's one of the very best on the market in that respect. Don't like it, don't buy it. As far as the D7500 is concerned, don't take Dx0marks scores for gospel. The larger pixel pitch of the D7500 gives it much better dynamic range from ISO 400 onwards than the SAMSUNG. Dx0mark's maths is massively biased towards high res sensors. And doesn't take into account DR at high ISOs. The sports score is also effectively meaningless as a result What's the difference between a score of 1300 ISO and 1400 ISO. less than 1/6 of a stop??? how is that a useful metric? When the d7500 is a full stop ahead of the SAMSUNG in dynamic range at high ISOs. They've gotten their maths all muddled up in the color depth scoring (which is heaving biased to high res camers), which has a big effect on the sports score. We're talking about difference here of 1/3 to 1/6 of a stop in DR, and about APSC sensor that are closing in on their theorital limits between trade-offs of SNR and pixel pitch. This is a pointless discussion. When all APSC nikons have been more than good enough since the D7000,

  16. @Cinegain I agree with a lot of your post. A mirrorless D5500, even in the DSLR form factor would be what I would ask for... I would just keep the same mount... Nikon has too rich of a lens history to start a new collection. It didn't work with the J1 or V1 or whatever that was, so why invest in one now when they already have some of the best lenses ever made available in the F mount. And personally, for me, after using so many different cameras over the past couple of years, I am just tired of big, clunky adapters. I'd rather have a native mount. Apparently Canon is planning the same thing with their rumored FF mirrorless and if the rumors are true, it will be an EF mount camera.

  17. Maybe go to the Heineken museum. Though, in all honesty, if you get the chance, drink Hertog Jan, Grolsch, Amstel etc instead. xD APS-C would allow easy adaptation of DX lenses as well and stuff like the Tokina 11-16mm and Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 would be native to it as well. Like you said, a focal reducer in between and you're set to still get fullframe coverage out of your F-mount lenses. Like, I don't want to waste a fullframe sensor and only use a S35 crop out of it... in meanwhile paying the premium. I don't mind rigging up my camera with cage, rods, follow focus, etc and throw it on some sticks with one of the 'Bourne' lenses on there, I've got the Nikkor ED 17-35, 28-70 & 80-200mm f/2.8 D lenses, but they are big 'n bulky and I'm speedboosting those now anyways. Seriously needs the appropriate occassion to throw 'em on. For me it's just about the up from 4/3" sensor performance to APS-C, which gets you quite a bit better dynamic range, lowlight high-ISO performance and richer colors. I notice the lack of performance from the somewhat tiny 4/3" sensor, but APS-C I'd be more than happy with. For me, no need for fullframe, but it's nice to have a option to use a focal reducer. And otherwise I just love compact mirrorless cameras with sensor stabilization that also have compact lenses. A 35mm f/1.8 DX lens goes a long way. If they bring a smart adapter, they can immediately benefit from a native line-up to the sensor size. Sony hasn't been developping any consumer level APS-C lenses for like 3 years now (they've only released a few big 'n expensive cine/ENG-style zooms), it's like the entry level to get into their fullframe system... but for the people without the fullframe money quite yet. They're seducted to buy the tiny A6x00 camera and throw on fullframe lenses they can later throw on their A7-line-up camera. For me it would be nice if Nikon would develop an even more compact (than DX) mirrorless APS-C line-up (after all flange distance is shorter)... like Canon is doing with EOS-M. Actually, they might just ask Samsung if they can copy their line-up. That 16-50mm f/2-2.8 S lens and those primes look like the exact sorta thing you want in your mirrorless APS-C line-up! Of course, they could pull a Sony and do just that. An APS-C camera for the fullframe wannabees and a fullframe one/fullframe ones that they'd really be pushing. Just... to me, it makes more sense to make a D5600 mirrorless than it is a D810. But maybe that's just me.

  21. Have you activated the webcam on my macbook??? I do have a D500 and it is literally in my hand as I'm reading this as I'm unpacking everything at my hotel for this tournament. (52 kilos of equipment, 1 kilo of clothes ) I don't have much in the way of short glass with me in Nikon mount so with that 2x crop I could do you a few shots of the moon. I think I have an old manual 24m in the bag so I could sort something out for that. On the upside, this promises to not exactly be a thrill a minute three weeks (and I've got a lot of gear with me for various reasons) so I am able to give you comparisons against : Fuji X-T2 JVC LS-300 Panasonic GX-80 EOS-M RAW *not 4K obviously and I'm presently starting at menus on it like a labrador trying to work out a card trick I've got enough adapters to use the same lens on all of the cameras and if Nikon are at the tournament then I can loan some short stuff off them. So, take your pick of subject from windmills, clogs, cheese or interesting coffee shops. EDIT >>> I've found it. Its a 28mm

  23. @maxotics well it makes you wonder why none of the major camera manufacturers have implemented Raw video into one of their cameras. We already know it's possible, so for Nikon that does have that rich heritage in photography, if they were to introduce, even 720p, Raw into one of their consumer/enthusiast cameras, I would be one of their first customers. I had the NX500 and now have a D5500 and although the NX500 wins with resolution, the D5500 I still own. As much as I wish Nikon would introduce more features and make the video process easier, every time I get those humble files into FCPX, I am blown away by the latitude of its Flat Profile. I don't know the technical intricacies of the curve, but I know I can easily push the image to a modern or vintage look with cold or warm colors. The image will break much quicker than other footage, with better bitrates but it's amazing what a simple curve adjustment can do with a Nikon. If a beginner came to me and asked me to recommend a camera for video, without a doubt I would recommend the D5500, or D7500 if they want 4K. The NX1/500 would be at the bottom of the list. But this is just my opinion and in no way am I even suggesting that the NX1 or NX500 are bad cameras... they're just not a Nikon.

  24. Sometimes you just do not know how good hardware you have until you gotten rid of it. I have yet to see any camera with the same price tag of the NX1 that has hardware to match, none. Sony A7sII and the A7rII are twice the price tag the NX1 was, these cameras still lack in consistency whereas the NX1 got it right and even Samsung willing to update the camera. There still third party manufacturers out there still making batteries, adapters and whatnot. Amazing really, you can still find brand new lenses for half the price on the internet, I just bought the 12-24mm, its brilliant! Sure its not F2.8 but it gets the job done and quality is there, I have a hard time finding Nikkor or Cannon glass equally good for the same price.

I'm getting rid of my MBSB and investing in M43 glass. If I'm going to put up with extra size and weight it will have to be for something like anamorphic. Other than that, there are smaller and easier to wield options.

    Power2000 batteries

I would just like to add an update to people still looking for batteries for the NX1 and NX500 or the BP1130 and the BP1900 batteries respectively. The best third party ones that are still being made to these days and are in big quantity is the Ex-Pro brand. Genuine BP1130 batteries can still be sourced from eBay for a reasonable price but the NX1 you have Ex-Pro I highly recommend this brand as its even better than the original Samsung ones and higher capacity from 1900mAh vs 2660mAh Ex-Pro Elite https://www.amazon.co.uk/Ex-Pro-Samsung-BP1900-2260mAh-Li-x/dp/B00YEZ2XLG/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1500080577&sr=8-8&keywords=BP1900&th=1 http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Genuine-Original-Samsung-BP1130-Battery-For-NX200-NX210-NX2000-NX300-NX300M-/331534428837?hash=item4d30fdeaa5:g:PIYAAOSwEgVWTCr2

    #fakenews + UFOs = #FUFOs

@kaylee this sentence reminded me of the pattern 9/11 debunkers, government agencies, and MSM used to discredit actual scientists and engineers. They got away with it in 2001 because most people don't have a science or engineering background and most people at that time trusted MSM and the government to tell them the truth. In 2017 MSM has been totally discredited (especially CNN), and most people now understand MSM are tools used by those truly in power (not the government). Now there is so much evidence that anyone who bothers to do their own research and educates themselves on basic physics and chemistry will understand that 9/11 was 100% an inside job. A couple smoking guns: did cell phones work on airplanes in 2001? Can buildings collapse in free fall without controlled demolition? Can fire, jet fuel (kerosene), and office material alone heat steel to fail? Was nanothermite a natural occurring building material for the WTC? Can a fire continue to burn for 3 months without oxygen and without a chemical oxidizer (such as nanothermite)? Did the building 7 video footage collapse even come close to NIST's "computer simulation"? If you got "yes" to any of these, please share the links The same information war techniques have been used for years regarding UFOs and secret government projects. Steven Greer has blown the whistle on the next planned false flag: the "alien invasion", so it's unlikely that will happen now. It's great that a former NIST government employee has been able to come out and tell the truth. That's a good sign that more people will be comfortable to come out and tell the truth about the real ancient history of this planet and E.T.s (I agree that secret government projects should remain secret, as long as the intent is to protect the people (all the people of Earth, not just their own countries)).

  36. The best thing about the MBSB is that it gives you the opportunity to mount big pro Canon L lenses on a small M43 camera. The worst thing about the MBSB is that it gives you the opportunity to mount big pro Canon L lenses on a small M43 camera. Invariably they completely unbalance it and the AF on the MBSB just doesn't cut it as far as I'm concerned. Is there a compelling enough Canon lens in my collection that I would simply have to have on my GX80 for example? Not really. The Sigma 18-35 is probably the one thats it worth having for but there are enough native lenses that I'm more than happy with and if the AF isn't up to snuff and you are manual focus anyway then Veydras, Voigtlanders etc are a bit more compelling anyway. What its good for is acting as a universal reducer for my Nikon, Contax Zeiss and M42 lenses via the additional cheap converters to EF and its also good on the JVC LS300 for putting longer lenses on where its a bit more appropriate use case. I was expecting the AF on the MBSB to be significantly better than the cheaper alternatives. It might well be but its still very lumpy as far as I'm concerned so I'd go with the cheaper adapter and put the extra money towards native stuff.

  38. "and is still about 8MP short on resolution" A 16 percent linear resolution increase is effectively nil. And pushing beyond 24mp at APSC will decrease your high ISO dynamic range - which is one stop less than D7500. It's all about tradeoffs Do you know why the d500 has a 2x crop? Because it reads the 3840 lines from it's center section, which eliminates aliasing and moire. Do you know what doesn't eliminate aliasing? Pixel binning 5568 into 3840 lines. Do you know what causes the a6300 to overheat? Downsampling 6000 lines to 3840. You cannot cheat maths and physics. Everything is a tradeoff. You can say I WANT THIS and I WANT THAT. But these aren't 8mp video cameras. You're complaining about one of the best APSC sensors in the history of photography in the D500 - a true marvel of high and low iso tradeoffs and autofocus speed. A truly professional APSC body for a low low price.

But rarely do you hear nikon shooters go *sigh, I wish I could take photos like wot that samsung smartphone does* hee hee

  40. @tdonovic Sorry, I have to disagree with your "image quality doesn't matter" line. I have an NX and, from time to time, think maybe I should upgrade or get rid of it. Everytime I have taken shots with a recent Nikon camera I walk away disappointed (and still the owner of an NX1). Nikon has a reputation for great cameras, whereas, Samsung has a reputation for phones that blow up and overpriced washers and dryers. Is it too much to ask that the one with the "great camera" reputation actually produce cameras that are great? Lastly...Samsung in their mind, still own 26% of the camera market...since most people just take shots with their smartphones.

  41. deciding which camera to buy based on a DXOmark score is as sensible as a mixed metaphor on a bull. and as td^ says I agree with you on most things, but not this. I dont agree with him either. Clearly image quality is not determined by dxomarks. Surely you know better than most: horses for courses. D5 is about speed. according to dxo my d5500 has better dynamic range than my d800. It just doesn't. Maybe in the testormatic-dynamic-rangifier2000 it does, but in lightroom and photoshop - in a picture of an actual thing - it does not. Similarly my canon 7d would get near the 5dmk2 in theory, bit in practice the shadows were a mushy purple and green nightmare. Anyhoo, IMHO the d800/d810 still has the nicest image on the market: and that's not bad for a 5 year old camera.

  46. My experience with the specific Metabones that you are after for M43 cameras is mixed. The work I'm doing on my hardware focus controller for Panasonic cameras has involved me creating a calibration procedure and the number of focus points for a native M43 lens is on average around 200 depending on the lens. On an EF lens via the Metabones its less than half that. And often much less than half that. This doesn't mean that it doesn't focus necessarily just that its very coarse in its points and the camera is returning some errors from it when trying to drive it too quickly between points. Now, all that might not seem to necessarily matter in terms of normal operation because I'm doing something completely different with it but it does tally with what I'm seeing from it when I am using it in normal operation where it is being a bit skittish. And this is using it with a variety of lenses from Canon including some short and long L lenses as well as more lower end ones like the nifty fifty and EF-S lenses but also the Sigma 18-35 1.8. Optically its fine, the aperture control is fine and the AF is generally OK but I would definitely advise that you try one out with the specific lenses that you will be using it with and see if it is right for you. Unfortunately, thats tricky depending on where you are as even in London I found nowhere that I could demo one.

  48. These days I wanted to test the maximum bitrates with hack NX/KS. I've found that to get the maximum bitrates you need to turn off all the functions that require memory and cpu: So if I turn off bluetooth, all the automatic functions, and close the display by going on EVF can go up to 220Mbit/s without interruption and up to 240Mbit/s for about a minute. The benefit that is obtained is that the macroblochin is reduced in size, transforming itself from small squares into a noise-like grain. What I think is that if the hack could turn off the display and the EVF being recorded, the NX1 could go over 250Mbit/s without any recording time limit.

  49. That is indeed how it works. It downsamples a 4K sensor readout to 1080p very early in the image processing pipeline to improve SNR and color. Here's a long boring white paper from Canon explaining the finer points. http://www.cs.ucsb.edu/~mturk/imaging/Misc/EOS_C300_New_35mm_CMOS_Sensor_WP.pd I don't know much about internal vs external recording as I haven't tried them both, but count me as a +1 for exposing to the right on Canon cameras. As long as you avoid clipping any color channels, it seems to respond well to bringing the image down in post.
