    The Sweet Spot

I'm a hybrid shooter, doing mainly travel videos of family, in recent years I've shot with the GX1, GH3, RX100 iv and A7R2. I took a long look through all my work around a month ago to try and decide what cameras I most enjoyed shooting with and which produced my best work. I concluded that m4/3 was my sweet spot. Some of my favourite pics came from the GX1, some of my favourite video from the GH3. I found that I really missed shooting with a GX1 style body. With such a small camera, I'd be more likely to carry the camera with me. With m4/3 (as opposed to the RX100) I'd be more likely to make an effort on the photo side. After reading Andrew's GX85 + Nocticron article and BTM_Pix's hack (tks so much guys!) I decided to pick up a GX85 a few weeks back. On the first day, I remembered why I loved Pannys UI (and disliked Sony's...) it was like coming home. In Hong Kong you can buy a brand new GX85 for around US$420 body only. I have a feeling this will be my new "sweet spot"

  2. I was watching that test trying to think of a scenario where you would have to track focus of someone walking to camera, disappearing off the bottom of the frame quickly, reappearing just as quickly from the bottom of the frame and then turning and walking away. I am now convinced beyond any doubt that the Sony A6500 would be my go to camera to shoot weightlifting.

From what I've seen online it's: Metabones > Zhongyi > R.J. (Jinrong) > BAVEyes (Kipon & IB/E Optics, Bayern (Bavaria -> BAV) (Handevision brand, remember that overpriced underperforming 40mm f/0.85? The BAVEyes seems to have been struggeling with sharpness issues, especially away from the center, chromatic abberation, etc. Not sure if this was addressed in later additions like the Kipon MF to FF) > brandless (and re-brands of the same one, like sold at the Roxsen eBay store). Like, if you don't want to spend the premium on a Metabones, get the Zhongyi Lens Turbo (latest version), which is superb value. Surely all manual though. Of course, if you need electronics it's a little different, probably doesn't get much better than the Metabones. Aputure has the EF DEC LensRegain as well. Aside from these two, personally I'd think I'd kinda forget about it what electronic focal reducers concerned? Would be interesting to hear some (debunking) other 2cts of course.

The Metabones one. Though now having actually bought one, I would maybe look at trying the Kipon Baveyes version and saving a few quid as I'm not sure the AF performance difference is as significant as I was expecting it to be with the Metabones.

  9. Thanks for that mercer, I download footage app, looks cool. I will have a mess around later. Thanks for the complements kaylee! Resolve 14 is fast, like crazy fast! The render times have decreased noticeably and the UI performance, seems faster. You say you are pretty comfortable with ACR. Whats your workflow? Do you know of a way to preview a frame other then the first one? I have been using ACR with AE and making a comp for each shot then rendering, is that fastest way? And recommendations on avoiding flicker with the ACR controls? Thanks for the compliments jonpais, made me smile. Really happy you liked them. I just finished a new film shot in Tokyo, all in Japanese, which I’m really happy with.

  10. It's certainly not crazy to be meticulous and try your best with what ya got. But on a website for aspiring filmmakers, but mostly hobbyist, it makes sense that attention is applied a little too much to a single thing, the camera. Many here are locked into what cameras do or don't do because, perhaps, they don't need to have a well-rounded approach to a production. Also, it's just fun to talk about technical crap. For me, the more important things are not camera specific. As you know, I love playing with cameras, but to funnel the majority of my attention through what apiece of gear can or can't do can be distracting. (unless that was my specific job) Sometimes, for instance, a good prop and production design is more integral to success than whatever sensor you happen to be using. Blocking, lighting, cinematography...um, the actual acting...one's ability to be a decent director...so much more important on a narrative. If you got yourself or a crew that excels in that, you'll be fine regardless of what you're shooting with. Interestingly, I think camera/sensor/lens decisions might be MORE important these days on documentary, where controlled situations are not part of things and the crew is very minimal.

  11. While (IMHO) the NX1 is still the best hybrid APS-C camera on the market, for several reasons, Nikon is trying hard to push the envelope and if they release a new mirrorless high end product within a couple of years from now, they could finally be the ones matching my beloved NX1. That said, it's so sad Samsung decided to quit. A next gen NX1 (which in 2014 was at least 3-4 years ahead of its times) could have seriously crushed the competitors. p.s.: for a real comparison at high ISO among NX1/500 and other cameras, try shooting at ISO 100 and then pull the shadows, even by several stops. NX1 is incredible at this, better than Nikon, Sony and MUCH better than Canon.

  12. Today I did a quick test to see how easy is to edit C200 RAW files with Resolve 14 beta 5 and what kind of machine it would be needed. I tested it on a Asus gaming notebook with i7 7700 HQ and NVidia GTX 1070 8 GBVRam , 512 SSD, 16 GB ram, ca 1800 USD machine. Resolve see the .CRM files like normal video files and it is able even on a notebook to play back the 4k 25p RAW lite file in real-time. Editing is fast with very fast scrubbing so no need to convert them for editing. Lite grading (color wheels, MD boost, saturation, contrast, sharpening, power window) is possible in real time on 4k timeline. For more complex stuff like NR on this notebook you need to enable proxy (flag to enable 1/2 resolution in Resolve, it does not generate or use proxy file) or change the timeline temporarily to fullHD for real-time preview. The main bottleneck is the CPU reaching 100% with a more complex grade with NR... For a 6 core i7 with GTX 1080 should not be a problem up to medium grading As expected if you have a powerful enough machine and you are a Resolve user you can edit natively the RAW Lite in real-time. I'm quite sure that 4k 60p the notebook will not be able to do it in real-time but the only RAW lite that I found are 4k 25p. One thing that at the moment it seems not possible it is to change the WB or the ISO on the RAW Lite in Resolve because the Camera Raw tab is disabled but I'm not sure, anyone have an idea?

  13. @jonpais I'm currently changing my workflow to ACES in davinci resolve. One of the benefits is a finer black level separation. So I can still crush blacks without satisfying too many details and strange gamma changes. I love it!

  14. I've never used the e-m1mk2 but I have enjoyed the videos I have seen from it more than I enjoy most of the GH5 videos. The Olympus records DCI 4K at a higher bitrate than the G85, plus you can shoot 4K Raw video at 60fps with short bursts... that's a pretty cool feature albeit maybe not all that practical... To add, I think the colors are better with a more organic look. But I guess that is subjective as anything else.

    Sony Slog2 Free LUTs

Hey everyone, I created custom Slog2 S-Gamut3.cine to REC709 LUTs because I wasn’t not very happy with the official LUTs or the ones that included with Davinci Resolve. Inside the archive you will find technical Slog2 into REC709 LUT as well as more stylized LUTs for specific looks. I also included versions with exposure compensation -1EV for overexposed material and official LUTs by Sony for your convenience. Get it here

  16. Yeah, even take Vimeo Staff Picks for example... how many of the comments relate to the production of the video... what camera was used, what lens, what was your post workflow, etc...? Filmmakers love films, so that will be a built in audience in any DIY filmmaking endeavor... be it a short film, feature, or more specific to what you're interested in... self-distributed no/low/micro-budget films. Of course, this is just a theory that I have never put into practice, but I would think it would be something to consider when designing and marketing your projects.

5d Mark iii ML Raw or Gh5?

Jon, I am not seeing any aliasing in the first video, where did you notice it? Yes, it definitely looks softer than Panasonic footage with a native Panny lens, but I wouldn't say it looks like 540p. Or maybe I find 540p footage looks better than GH5 footage... LOL. Did you try watching the video directly from Vimeo? Because I did notice that the filmmaker only has two viewing options... 360p and 1080p, so it's possible that due to your internet connection, Vimeo is automatically choosing the 360p version. Also ML Raw has ZERO in camera sharpening. In the description, the filmmaker states that he added sharpen at default in FCPX which I believe is 2.5, which really isn't much. But I think we've also established that you prefer ultra sharp footage, so the soft, I prefer organic, look just may not be your cup of tea. In the second video, I believe the filmmaker did add some gorilla grain, which can add to the perception of sharpness. I don't know if I would say a lot of sharpening or excessive film grain, but that could be taste, so I will yield to your preferences. Honestly, I probably shouldn't have included that video anyway, because he used the GH4 for the slow motion footage, so it wasn't a true representation of 5D3 with ML Raw.

  21. there are so many reasons to criticise nikon: In no particular order: Their marketing, product strategy, blinkeredness with video, nikon 1, DL debacle, those embarrassing action cams, their locked down firmware, their corporate culture, lack of imagination, inability to listen to their users... the list goes on. But rarely do you hear nikon shooters go *sigh, I wish I could take photos like wot that samsung smartphone does* hee hee

  22. @tdonovic Sorry, I have to disagree with your "image quality doesn't matter" line. I have an NX and, from time to time, think maybe I should upgrade or get rid of it. Everytime I have taken shots with a recent Nikon camera I walk away disappointed (and still the owner of an NX1). Nikon has a reputation for great cameras, whereas, Samsung has a reputation for phones that blow up and overpriced washers and dryers. Is it too much to ask that the one with the "great camera" reputation actually produce cameras that are great? Lastly...Samsung in their mind, still own 26% of the camera market...since most people just take shots with their smartphones.

  23. deciding which camera to buy based on a DXOmark score is as sensible as a mixed metaphor on a bull. and as td^ says I agree with you on most things, but not this. I dont agree with him either. Clearly image quality is not determined by dxomarks. Surely you know better than most: horses for courses. D5 is about speed. according to dxo my d5500 has better dynamic range than my d800. It just doesn't. Maybe in the testormatic-dynamic-rangifier2000 it does, but in lightroom and photoshop - in a picture of an actual thing - it does not. Similarly my canon 7d would get near the 5dmk2 in theory, bit in practice the shadows were a mushy purple and green nightmare. Anyhoo, IMHO the d800/d810 still has the nicest image on the market: and that's not bad for a 5 year old camera.

  24. GX85 wedding (with EOSHD Canon colour LUT) Although I now have a GH5 and only use the GX85 as a B cam at weddings here is an example of a wedding shot entirely with a GX85. It's a remarkable camera with the worst sound ever! I used the EOSHD Canon LUT at 50-70%. It works well enough but I don't like the hassle of using LUTs on these type of videos.

  25. Here's scenes from a feature I'm shooting on the NX1. All using the tracking autofocus. I hope this camera lasts a LONG time, because even after all these years, its footage and capabilities are gorgeous and unmatched. https://vimeo.com/225352203

  31. Thanks for using Pro Color on the video JazzBox. I see you had contrast -5 It would have looked better with the optimal settings in the guide, which have contrast at 0. When you set contrast to -5 it doesn't give you more dynamic range. It reduces the amount of tones between one colour and another = Less colour information in the end result even when you add contrast in post. This is EOSHD Pro Color for Panasonic with Contrast at 0 (optimal, as in guide): And this is at contrast -5 (see how the tones on the face are mashed together?):
