  1. It has amazing dynamic range even in Rec.709. It has remarkably low rolling shutter compared to Sony. The 10bit files are amazing in low light with lots of 'depth' and richness to the shadows. It helps that it's so good in low light anyway with very clean ISO 3200. Tons of features, I will write a guide about it but it will take a while. Review coming soon, I know it's been ages but I will get round to it!

  2. Its a bit mind boggling to consider the sort of fanboy cult an alliance between RED and Apple could potentially produce. Its going to be like the moonies merging with the scientologists. Via USB-C

  3. The way the contrast detect based AF on the GH5 works is by cranking the sensor to frame rates of 240fps, maybe even higher, and very CPU intensive analysing of bokeh and depth of field (DFD mode). So you can't expect AF to be as fast at 24p in video mode as it is in stills mode. What Panasonic need to do is get Dual Pixel AF technology on the sensor. It is the only reliable way of doing good AF for filmmakers. The phase-detect A6500 route is a dead-end, it's just not bomb proof enough. It hardly ever tracks reliably, especially in low light. Meanwhile good old manual focus has resulted in many classic films, so I suggest we stop being so lazy and use that instead

  4. I spent a while reading and watching that Steve Yedlin Argument this inspired me to this experiment So I was just messing around the other day and decided to shoot 1080p on my NX1 and found myself Fiddling with the bitrate hack which I usually leave on 140-160 mbps Was curious so I started messing with the bit rates and typed in 400mbps and got denied kept dropping down in increments of 10 until it allowed 320mbps I took it out shooting and the camera didn't skip a beat with audio + Autofocus with both S lenses. was shooting for around 40min and the only thing I could tell was when you pulled the SD card out right after shooting it was a bit a little warm. I also Shot some 120fps @320mbps and it would only go about 30 sec before failing... I dropped it down to 300mbps and it recorded continuously I just stopped it after 3 min... Perhaps its wishful thinking but I do "feel" the image is somewhat "thicker" is this basically like shooting 4k 160 and outputting to 1080 and rez up 4k again? First shot is the "Raw" File Second shot is a Grade I was trying to make match/cut with this frame. ( I failed the shot is much more blue than mine) Third shot is 120fps @320mbps played back @ 20% speed I uploaded the bike shot Raw out of camera if you wish to mess with it. I have no pro scopes or calibrated monitor to see is there is any advantage to this let me know your thoughts and or findings (about 160mb) https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0mz6D_bQOx7SFZSWnQyU1VINms/view?usp=sharing

  5. Because time moves in a forwards direction! The 42MP sensor came out in 2015, it's practically 2014 tech! Thankfully Sony isn't Canon and they do go forwards rather than use the same sensor tech for 10 years. Or even backwards with 6D Mark II.

  6. Little more to it, go to the Raven page and click 'Shop now', you're taken to the Apple Store listing. First I thought it was for Apple to plug and bundle their own Final Cut Pro X software, but again, seems like there's a little more to it. Maybe it was Apple who knew how to quickly create more production capacity for high demand products and lend 'em a hand, in return letting them be the front for sales.

  7. Looking a bit shaky - but this is a nice lens at 100FPS the Pentax K 28mm 3.5. The shimmering warm flares at the start are nice - obviously some reflection off the water.

  9. Camera will only do reliably 140mbps with autofocus + audio + lens stabiliser. So far I never seen anyone do a proper test with 140mbps vs 250mbps or 300mbps. I was thinking about doing one but since you practically have to disable everything in order to shoot above 200mbps, it was never worth it for me. I would suggest if you tried yourself, go find something with lots of contrasts, and then do 140mbps, 160mbps, 200mbps, 250mbps and 320mbps if you can get it working that fast. Then start pulling some shadow to and zoom in on the details, I got the Lexar Professional 2000x, if you cannot do this I might spare some time and try. If you plan on getting a faster SD card, look at this review, Lexar is still the King but Toshiba is catching up, SanDisk is awful reliability issues. https://havecamerawilltravel.com/photographer/fastest-sd-cards/

  10. For my experience, if you don't underexpose the image even the G7 is great in low light. Last week I tried the RED Scarlet-W with the new Zeiss CP3 lenses and Angenieux 30-90 zoom for 3 days and shot most of the images with both RED (in raw) and GH5 with Olympus 12-40 (8 bit). Nothing scientific, just some random shots in difficult conditions: honestly the RED is an AMAZING camera, easy to use, super professional, I'd love to buy it... but the GH5 is not bad at all and for my everyday shooting (music videos and shorts) it is far more easy to manage and probably more creative thanks to its dimensions (I would not put the Scarlet on a cheap drone or on a Gorillapod). I'm not saying that the GH5 is in the same league, one is an Hollywood camera, the other is a prosumer little camera, but I do love it! V-LogL il great, far better then with GH4 (less noise etc) and to be honest, also RED has some noise in the shadows. Of course you can get rid of that noise in a second, just doing the basic color correction, but I was shocked by the easiness you can match the GH5 with the RED. So, I'm not only in love with the GH5, but I think it offers more then 99% of the people needs. A great little camera

  11. While I agree with you the information posted on that site is not based on science and the points made are not valid, when one focuses most of their energy on attacking the character of the person vs. what they say, it vastly diminishes one's credibility and projects lack of self esteem: perception is projection. With our planet on the verge of another world world (possibly nuclear), it is in our best interest at every level to figure out how to be kind to each other and work together, to help each other non-competitively. Tough times are ahead- the cat's out of the bag regarding global banking and its current state (crypto currency is a reaction to the problem and may not solve it). It's in our best interest to prevent more division, instead promote unity and helping each other, as that's the best chance of preventing the next big disaster or helping us to survive and heal if it cannot be prevented. While it's important to be aware of negative things such as war and global financial collapse, it's more important to be thinking about living in harmony, as our thoughts do indeed change reality in ways that are currently beyond our scientific understanding: http://www.princeton.edu/~pear/implications.html Here's a challenge for everyone: don't put anyone down or project negativity for a week. Smile at everyone you see. Meditate at least 10 minutes every day (it's easy once you start doing it regularly). See how people treat you differently and how your life and outlook on life changes. I'm not perfect and this post is a reminder for myself to practice the same. On the topic of contrast, micro contrast, and resolution, it's all the same thing, the ability to measure differences / deltas / changes at multiple frequencies, from low to high. MTF charts and shooting lens charts are useful tools for showing lens performance without pseudoscience. The lens effect you mention regarding parallel light is collimation: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collimator, https://oceanoptics.com/product-category/collimating-lenses/. For aesthetic and artistic appeal, these kinds of tests are helpful: http://www.thehurlblog.com/lens-tests-leica-summicron-c-vs-cooke-s4-film-education/, http://www.thehurlblog.com/cinematography-online-why-do-we-want-flat-glass/. We can see that defects and artifacts can be appealing, depending on the intended use of the lenses and projects.

  14. No. I opened a profile years ago and never used it until now. And I don't have the hands on skills for lens modding. I wish I did! I can sound relatively expert on a lot of technical subjects fast because I'm a good researcher and used to doing things like technical audits on business plans. So when got interested in stills about 18 months ago I realised at a certain point that dpreview type tests and mtfs were insufficient, wondered why film looked different digital, and spent a few hours doing research. Other interesting things I realised: - Sample variation of some lens designs with can be huge. Naturally marketing picks the best ones out to send to out on loan to reviewers... (The zooomier a lens and the faster, the bigger the scope for variation - even more so if the lens includes a sub 35mm FL on fullframe DSLRs, because then a lot of complexity gets added to work around the mirror box.) - DSLR focus accuracy varies considerably and poorer focus costs resolution. These losses are eliminated from most tests. (Mirrorless cameras don't have this problem.) The best site for interesting articles on camera tech is lensrentals.com, if anyone fancies a really good nerd-out. 16. If it matches the video of the A99, also has decent AF, and lets folk use their Nikon glass natively, that would be an decent option for those invested in Nikon glass. On the other hand if they brought out a video oriented D750 upgrade, 24 MP full frame sensor down sampled to 4K (A9 style) for half the money, then you can keep the 40+ MP camera.

  17. Did anyone try this under better circumstances? The GX800 would be a great (= small & cheap) cam to shoot 4k24 from a small gimbal. I told my girlfriend that I'll buy her a camera so she can practice photography, while sharing my lenses (GH5). Secretly I actually want to buy a dedicated camera for my Crane so I don't have to take the GH5 out of a cage/handheld rig. With the GX800 being so light, I could use a quick release and the 14mm f/2.5 lens and still downgrade to the smaller Crane-M. If it does Cine-D would be amazing, but I guess I could also settle for Natural. Really love what you're doing @BTM_Pix , stuff like this makes me wish I had paid more attention in university

    Recommend me a GH5 Kit

With my GX85 it works nicely, up and down movements stabilized, tilts as well. Pans not working well, only for the classic Pennebaker handheld style for connecting shots and following movements. As soon as it is about static objects to pan along, jitter is killing the image with my specific GX85 camera. That´s true and it avoids jitter very well. Your ellusive shooting style of daily life vignettes reflects that well, floating with the flow, letting the viewer forget the camera completely and allowing him to concetrate on the subjects and events and sights. I am a little bit sad, that for background panning I cannot really use my camera with IBIS, only following movements in Pennebaker style.

  20. I have it, and did not liked it too much. Bought this one in eBay after and to my taste is much better: https://varavon.com/collections/accessories/products/sling-follow-focus?variant=858184235 (albeit I have not used it from a long time - kind of got the grips with focusing manually, since I take a lot of stills in concerts in MF or vintage lenses) About the grip, just wish that Panasonic (or someone) make some external grips like Olympus does... but found something interesting in Varavon's page that I was not aware: https://varavon.com/collections/rod-accesories/products/eng-grip-b-type?variant=860241427. It's an ENG grip to use with rods, but looks like that is the same grip that they use in some of their cages, the rod part is fixed with two screws that I suppose that could be attached to a cage / L bracket.

  21. It's getting a ton of coverage this week. That alone is enough traffic to drive sales. I don't think there's anything wrong with it, but if we are to believe what they said on RED's forum - that they can't keep up with manufacturing, I just wonder why they'd expand and create longer backorder times. Unless Apple is helping with manufacturing.

  23. I've had mine since day one and use it for video and photo. Aside from the remarkable video features, this thing is a wonderful stills camera. I shot a wedding this past weekend with it. Had to boost the ISO to 4000 for the reception and it looks fantastic. The AF-C with 225 point AF worked amazingly. Normally I use my Nikon D3s for receptions due to the low light IQ and focussing ability, but the GH5 blew it out of the water focussing-wise.

  24. Really like it. Better in so many ways than the GH4. For paid jobs I really think this is a versitile and really killing combo vs more expensive and bigger cameras. But when I shoot own shortfilms, musicvideos or other more 'art' stuff I would like to have more DR, better motion, even better colors and so on. But have to say in those kind of jobs, GH5 is really capable also! Here is my latest musicvideo with GH5:

  28. On a slightly different note, I've found that exposing correctly on the NX1 is all down to looking at the colors on the onboard OLED. Even one stop over exposed, and the colors will look washed out. One step under, and they look muddy. It's surprising how quick colors shift around on that OLED, it really shows what's going on once you acclimate to it. Don't worry about the low end, the screen seems to certainly crush the blacks and not show the shadows, but when the files hit the computer, the information is there. I'd say there's a stop of light on the low end that you don't see, maybe even a stop and a half depending on your picture profile and pedestal setting.

  29. Maybe it has something to do with red hydrogen. Maybe its an exchange for prores licenses. Or maybe apple engineers are working on the OS for hydrogen. Or compatible ios apps for red hydrogen. As the main issue with hydrogen is that is has its own OS. And no apps will be available for it.

  30. I have an aging D800 that I've been thinking of upgrading for a while, so I'd be interested in a D850. I'd probably sell my D500 for the D850, if it shoots as fast as the rumours say and has 120fps slomo video.

  31. I bought the GH5 for 10bit 422 and IBIS, which were the only things I reallly missed with the GH4. Having the second memory card slot and LUT preview is fantastic. Couldn't be happier.

  32. Same for me Jon...I like quiet cameras that you don't "feel" in the footage...just because you can move it, does not mean you should??...but if you do, I like the slow control of a dolly/slider shot....For me the value in IBIS is getting away with a shot without a tripod!

  38. The next month or so should reveal more information apparently. The problem I have is that the go to source for info about it should be the reduser site but I can't last more than a few more minutes on there because of the sycophancy. I went over there earlier to see what it was all about regarding RED selling the cameras through the Apple store and pretty much did this.

  39. Hi mate, your file it's 62Mbit/s! For nice footage you need to minimize the cpu. Use this setting: 1) Turn off the audio. 2) setting all manual mode. 3) UHD 24Fps. 4) 250Mbit/s. You Can shoot for about 1 minute. I wait your response.

I'll update the topic if I come across something good)

  45. I have no idea at all why you think someone writing an article that technical doesn't know what a curve is just because he doesn't discuss them in an article where they are largely irrelevant to the point being made - which is that Bayer sensors, film and Foveon have different highlight behaviour, and the last two are more organic. Ditto white balance. ..If everyone writing an article about anything stopped to point out every possible related point, no matter how obvious... Well, it might help some people, but it would be a drag for the rest of us.
