  2. No, that's not what it's for. Usually on shoots we don't have much time to eat, so what you do is dangle some sausages in front of your mouth so you stay fed. If you're a veggie, you can use carrots instead. Also, the bit at the back is actually a mini microwave, so you can heat up some cofffee for your assistant.

  3. I didn't read your post because its was to long and probably just useless insults. But to the rest, here meanwhile is actually showing and proving exactly my point in the first post. He haven't even read the article from Reuters that writes about a successful outcome for an investor in a profitable company. Instead he goes by NOFS click bait fake news headline that was first started by a hatemonger/blogger that nows squat about pretty much anything. So what we have is a chain where everyone only reads and takes in the fake sidetrack story while at the same time believing that what they say originated from the original source. And we all know this is a global problem in actual news as well. People want to believe the fake version of things rather than reality. We see it in politics, war, you name it. And it is a problem.

  4. The audience shifts over time and keeps evolving with the site. NFS have written pretty much nothing but articles designed to reel in clicks so their audience has shifted to the lowest common denominator of people. It's what you get if you have to pay for your visitors or entice them with headlines, rather than building a community around real content and real filmmakers / enthusiasts. The people left online overall are the same as ever, not just trolls but real people - pros and artists still use the internet, they have not gone away! It's just that maybe they don't want to read or engage with a shit website. The problem is that there are too many shit websites around and it's hurting the internet generally. Most sites are completely under the spell of clickbate and bad content for hits and ad revenue... I have completely lost faith in pretty much all of the photographic / video sites to be honest.

  5. When the NX1 came out Philip Bloom bought it but didn't use it very much as he said the dynamic range was limited. I thought it was a bit limited too, turns out we were both wrong... Here is the effect of Fast Colour Corrector in Premiere changing output levels to 16-235 for NX1 clips recorded in 0-255 RGB range mode. Original file - blown out clouds... And here is an additional 1-2 stops in the highlights from enabling Smart Range + in-camera - I'd put this camera right up there for image quality now... Right near the top of the pile. Both sample images shot with the superb NXL adapter by the way with Canon 50mm F1.2L full frame FOV and DOF. Thanks Luca

  6. That place used to be cool. The comments on the page and their facebook have been so toxic lately that there imo is absolutely no point in having any sort of discussion there. There is not one single article, about anything that's not met with nothing but hate. It could be an article about world peace and everyone gets mad and want war. No moderation. At least the articles where decent imo. And then they started to slip, click bait, bad fact checking and so on. The latest example was the success story that Leica has gone so far into the green that the investor that holds a minority share of 45% is ready to make a return and become rich. Some bogus bloggers made up a story about it and that's what NOFS is reporting. Not the original content from a credible news agency. They are actually speculating that a bank selling a share with no money passing through Leica would "save" a very profitable an growing company... sigh. And that's just one example. Normally I don't get to upset but I actually liked NOFS. I thought it was a great blog. But lately.. I don't know. There still is alot good stuff and fascinating articles. Forums have been on a steady decline for a few years. The whole positive video movement is long dead imo. But there at least was the blogs and this forum is still on the up-n-up if you ask me. I don't really know what my point is, just venting. Lately I have accepted that its mostly just the "Ass-Burgers" left online (wrote a blog about that a year or so ago). The pros and artists are out shooting and the rest have moved on to other hobbies. This blog and forum I think is the only place where creativity and art can coexist with the charts people. But its a battle, I see the scene in 300 where they are pushing them out of the passage with their shields. Sorry for the rambling. Like I said, just venting. Stay strong

  10. People have argued and debated on the internet since the beginning on USENET (even before on dial-up BBS's). One reason people are in a much more dramatic space is due to the constant negative divisive programming coming daily from mainstream media and the frequent reminder of world war III starting with N. Korea. India is now in a standoff with China. At the same time the US government is under assault from the so-called deep state, run by the bankers looking to hold onto power after the impending global financial reset. Consciously and unconsciously this results in an increase in negative behavior online. We can keep our heads down and fiddle with our cameras and gear, or we can get out and make films and videos designed to bring unity, show how we can work together, how we can survive when the financial reset happens, how we can survive if WW 3 happens, and even better how we can all stand up and voice our global desire: war is not an acceptable solution to the financial crisis. If this is one of the last forums where useful information is shared and people get along, then the pattern is an example to apply to other forums, news site comment sections, Facebook and so on. Now more than ever in all our lifetimes is the time to figure out how to work together non-competitively and with kindness, for the survival of everyone.

  12. True, assigning dollar amounts to features is a crude way of evaluating a camera. But I think my overall point stands: at this point, with what we know or can reasonably assume about the camera (GH5 LSI, AF performance), the camera is overpriced- even when disregarding the GH5 and strictly comparing to it's intended competitors (FS5/7/7II, C300II, UMP, C200). I also think assuming the EVA will be a Varicam at half the price is a bit foolhardy- at least when recording internally. Processing and codec are very important parts of the image pipeline, and if it's the GH5 LSI in the EVA, I doubt it will be packing Varicam magic into 150Mbps. Surely the image will be a bit nicer than the GH5's, just because of the better sensor: but quadruple-the-cost better? I'm betting the EVA will be a lot like the FS5- nice form factor, nice sensor, really nice image when outputting raw to a (bulky, fiddly, expensive) external recorder.... weak-ish internal codec that's a lot closer to what's in their consumer photo cams (GH5 or A-series, respectively) than their pro cams (Varicam or FS7/7II/F5).

    GH1/GH2 Hack

@mercer I think its great you got a GH2, now you just have to go the next small step and take up the Back to the Future challenge™️ to improve your filming and cure you of GAS. The main challenge is to use the GH2 for a entire year but if that too much to commit to up front then at least 2 months without any thoughts of a new camera purchase -you really don't need that E-M5ii or Canon M6 or D500 I will be your sponsor if do the challenge, and will join you with my GH3. I missed the GH2 era and started filming with a GH3, I agree that some newer camera may have a better image with colours, tonality etc but in reality these are small improvements over the GH2/3 and can be overcome with creativity. Now if your shooting for broadcast or theatre projection then it makes a difference, but for youtube or vimeo I don't think it really makes as much of a difference as we like to think. Some of the colour issues with say the GH3 are mainly due to everyone shooting with all settings at minus 5 and then expecting that slapping a few LUTs on the footage will make it look like an Alexa. If I look at what I've done mainly as a hobbyist (I do the occasional paid wedding as well), I have been far too distracted by gear and the technical side -60p, then 120p now 240p, 4K (which I only use to get good 1080p, so why not just shoot good 1080p), shooting contrast at -5, then shooting log, so many LUTs I've lost count, big rigs, small rigs, I hate all rigs, monitors, evf's, external recorders, gimbals, sliders, ultra contrast filters, black satin filters, speed boosters and on it goes. It some ways its refreshing to go back to basics, which was all there was for hobbyists really at the beginning of the DSLR revolution. I suspect that for a new filmmaker or someone who has been distracted by gear, the best advice is to get a decent camera such as a GH2 or GH3, a few good primes, and decent sticks and shoot the crap out of it for at least a year before contemplating any further gear. Learn to compose, to light, to get good audio, to tell a story, learn to edit and grade. The GH5 looks great but in someways has more options than most of us need, and you can end up spending all of your time testing all of these options rather than being forced to shoot something creative. If the Watchtower of Turkey was filmed on a GH3, with a 12-35mm and 42.5mm lumix lens, and a tripod, and it has 4.3 million views on Vimeo, then do I really need anything more?

  16. Hey people! the way to avoid clickbait ist to engage in the attempt of creating it a way too much. That way people will get annoyed hopefully. Unless the psychology behind different strategies is much trickier. I think it is. Dataminers will give clues to content shitters how to bait for clicks even with the most stupidest shit. So the best data analysis and realization will allow for successful clickbaiting. Duh, that is obvious common sense, you say. Well you still clicked this topic and language and social behaviour analysis will put this into context as well. So one needs to be so cheesy in clickbaiting that it only attracts people nobody can make an immorally earned dollar with. Here it goes my cheesy clickbaiting, which I am not making a dollar with. Tata, check out my 8bit GX85 unlit footage, only brittle HD. Isn´t that still looking kinda cool? Isn´t that a good reason to not to get baited by techsites and their clickbait headlines and to realize how awesome cameras have become. Is it weird that I keep going forward and backward with my thread and topic? Well, sometimes it is just so much fun to engage in a conversation with you guys. Because you rock. And because you deserve yourself your own little bit of clickbait. But only a little bit. Just like mine. Now for the fourth time on EOSHD. Dadaaaaa, video! The music is awesome for granted

  17. I've just picked one of these up and its a pretty nifty little thing. Basically its a series of locking bars that you can easily change to be anything from a selfie stick for Vlogging to a top handle to a shoulder mount or even a poor man's low mode stabiliser. As the joints lock in any angle its really flexible in being able to be shaped to what you need it for. Its really useful in the shoulder mount mode actually because you can make the angle of the piece that runs over your shoulder to be really tight so it hooks in firmly. Each piece also has 3 mounting holes so you can attach handles, mics, lights, monitors, cup holders or whatever else rig enthusiasts like to cram on there if thats your thing. Its light, versatile, folds down small enough to fit in a coat pocket and at £38 its not exactly going to break the bank. With something with IBIS like the GX80 I've got it with here, it gives some great additional stabilisation advantage and still keeps you stealth. https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/Camera-Photo/Movo-SV1000-Aluminum-Combination-Stabilizer/B012Y7UVB4/ref=sr_1_19?ie=UTF8&qid=1498822792&sr=8-19-spons&keywords=movo&psc=1

No fixed lens ones. -one exception: GX85 in HD mode, because it would be awesome to have a legit short film with it. Plus I might shoot mine with it. Oh well

    GH1/GH2 Hack

Sure that sounds good and should we include that if anyone else wants to join, then they at least have to shoot in 1080p? Or do we want to limit this to GH1/GH2/GH3? Yeah, the 5D3 is just like nothing else I've ever used and it's probably the easiest camera to shoot with and grade. The conversion process can be a little tedious but there are ways around that now. I hope the GH2 is all I think it will be. If not, it's my own fault and I'll have to work on those things I feel are lacking.

  20. Just for the matter of proper quoting of "MrStupid": "A lens with great micro-contrast can produce a photograph that appears to be life-like and threedimensional despite it being unsharp or out of focus. A lens that excels only at sharpness (like Sigma ART, Zeiss OTUS and Milvus, Sony G-Master or Canon non-L lenses) cannot achieve such a feat." So, this is not opposite of mine experience with Sigmas: slightly exaggerating sharpness of detail vs providing more color nuances (and impression of depth) - at the end, image looks very flat-ish. That's the reason why for me it wasn't easy task to match radically sharp/flat choice of Sigma Art lenses with anything else. Although, of course, his statement that "Unlike measurable resolution, micro-contrast is perceptible not measurable" has a mystical taste As @jsc already note, Shane Hurblut test give some more elaborate facts about topic. http://www.thehurlblog.com/lens-tests-leica-summicron-c-vs-cooke-s4-film-education/ Hurblut: "I felt the Leica was sharper... Cooke definitely was creamier and more three dimensional... The 3D quality is how far the background feels away from the subject and how the subject pulls away from that BG."

  21. For all the time I spend wasting on forums, I never could get into No Film School. The few times I've been on it, something just seemed... I don't know, childish? Perhaps that's being too judgmental. This place has the perfect blend of a small and active community. It's kinda rare to have both. Too many people is often not a good thing, as the signal to noise ratio gets really bad. I used to go on dvinfo and creativecow a lot but both seem dead. Even bmcuser has slowed down like crazy. I do enjoy a lot of the film based subreddits. r/editors, r/videography, r/filmmakers and r/cinematography. This is still my favorite video related website.

  22. The 4x is useful, but only for very controlled conditions, as it really gets pretty close and has a lot of DOF. If you notice the scene of the boy, one eye is in focus whereas the other is not. The 2x is my favorite. The 1x is not really that necessary on the 40 Compact. The whole set was $75 at BH, so it's a low risk purchase. I was pretty please with the quality. As for my experience using the 40 Compact, it's very favorable. I think this kind of portable anamorphic setup makes shooting scope a real option for regular folk. It's a great way to get your feet wet, and to my eyes it looks pretty good. I'm sure in the right hands amazing results are possible.

  24. Trying to make a "filmmaker" living as the industry is getting turned upside down is a challenge. I feel for the young grunts paying their dues in this way. Doesn't seem like a lot of fun. You can't run a website long term with constant 20-something turnover, and exploitation of those folks. The quality will just be too marginal to be compelling. People appreciate and comprehend quality, whatever form it takes. If no one at NFS is mature or talented enough to offer some sort of insight worth considering, why read it? Superficial stuff might get you instant numbers, but if nothing is worth sticking around for then those numbers (people) will drift after a different shining thing. And the internet has quickly become mostly superficial shiny things. I mean, I'm guilty of filling my head with online nonsense for no other reason than I have time to kill. "Hey, I better see what's new and pooping out of the outrage machine! It's been 30 minutes since I last looked!" Bad reason. In contrast, EOSHD is a simple yet legitimate site. The pace here is organic and justifiably so. The site could also easily last as long as the owner wants it to.

I have the feeling Pana expected what we all expected, that Canon would produce a 25p 4k camera and call it a day and they were caught with the pants down and off guard. In fact, I'd rather mix the gh5 with the C200 than with the EVA.

I think what's really interesting about it is that it seems like a comic strip. So keep making them and keep them short. Maybe try and get one out every few weeks or a month. And then I guess spread them across the internet. Post them on Facebook and Twitter and YouTube and Instagram along with Vimeo. I assume there is a huge following for 2D animation, so I would assume you can get it seen, if you find your audience. Hell Adult Swim may have some type of Forum or comment section, at least a Facebook page. Post a link there. Either way, nice work and keep at it, I look forward to the next installation. If you go forward with it.

    GH5 Cages

So what did people settle for by now? I'm considering getting a cage so I can mount a quick release plate via 2 screws but also to occasionally mount accessories like a field monitor, video mic or a top handle. Looking at the market currently has a bunch of stuff but some prices are just silly for what a cage does (is it so expensive to CNC a piece of aluminium?) or badly fitting. These seem to be the currently as of this post available cages I could find with a link to their product page (of existing) and a subjective opinion: 8Sinn http://www.8sinn.com/index.php/8sinn-gh5-cage.html - Around 199 $ for just the cage alone (ends up at 220€ in Europe). CameTV - 298$ but comes with a riser for rod and a top handle. Chrosziel http://www.chrosziel.de/neu-system-700-gh5/?lang=en - 295€ for cage and top handle, has an integrated Manfrotto compatible dove tail JTZ DP30 - Minimum configuration is the cage with a top handle, riser with rods. Very modular as camera to cage, cage to riser and riser to base plate have quick release connections (looks more Arca Swiss than Manfrotto though?). Difference to other cages is that the cage has electronic connections with camera and top handle (and optional hand grip kit, etc.). Starts at 359€. Lockcircle https://www.lockcircle.com/store/?p=robotskingh5 - Half-cage alone is already 439€, 539€ for full cage. Movcam - Looks like a copy of the slightly earlier released 8Sinn cage, also roughly same price it seems. Seercam http://seercam.com/shop/cube-gh5/ - Starts at 250$ for cage only. Has an integrated dovetail for their optional rod riser. SmallRig http://www.smallrig.com/smallrig-dslr-cage-for-panasonic-lumix-gh5-1965.html - I had the A6300 cage and that was great for the money but this one seems to fit rather poorly on the grip side. Is it comfortable to hold it? Also got mixed reviews regarding access to the top control buttons. 89$ Tilta https://tilta.com/shop/tilta-panasonic-gh-series-cage-es-t37/ - 350$ and comes with cage, top handle, rod riser, screw-on rod holder and HDMI clamp. Camera mounts into the cage via quick release plate. Varavon https://varavon.com/products/zeus-gh5-cage?variant=40977115270 - Cage only incl cable clamp comes for 219$. Zacuto https://store.zacuto.com/gh5-cage/ - Comes with a hand strap and is going to cost you 495$. ...and then there are of course all the generic cages and half cages that are just a aluminium square to mount your cam into or are two plates connected with 15mm rods for height adjustment. You could say there is something on the market for everyone, different form factors, features and prices points (~ 90 - 500$ for the cages alone). What is important though: not all of the cages allow to use the XLR audio adapter on top, especially when using the top handle. I really like what Tilta and JTZ DP30 are doing by having the camera mount into the cage on a quick release plate. This allows you to quickly take the camera out of the cage and slap it onto a gimbal where even the small weight increase of the cage might be a deal breaker. On the other hand there is something to be said for really form fitting cages like 8Sinn and Movcam.

Cool. It looks like something you'd see on Adult Swim. This genre works so well with your dialogue. Did you do all of the voices? I loved how I never felt anything for the characters, they just existed. It was almost so off it was genius. Banal yet edgy. When they were in bed, it went to a different level and I loved it. Would like to see these characters at the supermarket or whispering at Church. Or stuck in traffic. At first I wished their mouths moved more and then I enjoyed the lack of movement. However, I would have liked a blink or eyebrow lift once in a while. Make another one but change the main character's name. Linus is too famous a cartoon character to use.

  38. You're forgetting to factor dual native ISO. But I also think you're trying to put dollar amounts on something that is greater than its parts. We're talking a super 35 camera that's practically a VariCam LT, without ProRes and with a stop less low-light, for half the cost. Really, if anything, the GH5 is underpriced for what it is - not the other way around. But this is all hypothetical until we see footage. Then we can all decide for ourselves if it's worth $7500.
    1 point
  39. I'm usually a huge Panasonic fanboy but I'm a bit pessimistic about the EVA. The price is just too high for what you're getting, which is the GH5 LSI hooked up to a new sensor. 8-bit 4:2:0 at anything over 30p? And under 30p, the bitrates are still no higher than the GH5's? C'mon, that's not $7.5K territory. That's like $5-6K territory.... GH5 is $2,000. Internal NDs and XLRs and form factor add about $1-1.5K of value. Maybe $2K if you really want to argue. Bigger sensor adds about the same. That brings it to maybe $6K- well shy of $7.5K. And that's before considering that the EVA won't have IBIS, its AF will certainly be worse than the GH5's (which isn't stellar in the first place), and it doesn't have a viewfinder. So subtract whatever you think those are all worth- to me it's a lot- and you're most likely back under $5K. Sure, there's RAW output, and slightly better HFR than the GH5... add what you will for those features. Maybe they make it worth it for you. The value will be easier to judge when the GH5's 400Mbit update is released. If it's as good as everyone hopes, both cameras become much better values. But I think it will be about the same situation as the GH4's 1080p: the 100Mbit Long-GOP is better for most situations over the 200Mbit All-I, unless you're really prioritizing motion over resolution. And then there's those pesky rumors that the Panasonic engineers can't even get the 400Mbit to work smoothly on the GH5 LSI....

    GH1/GH2 Hack

Hey, Mat33. Thanks for the post. And yeah I know I am definitely a victim of GAS and I need help. Ha. But seriously, this was the point in getting the GH2. I'll never be a one camera person. There are just too many options. The 5D3 and ML Raw has made me happier than any other purchase I ever made. My first short film is turning out great, I couldn't be happier. In fact, I had a shoot today and got another scene in the can. But being a backyard, no budget, hobbyist filmmaker, for me, means a lot of sacrifices. I can't always schedule the actors when it is conventient because they are donating their time, so a couple weeks may go by between shooting days. I am very lucky to have a good paying job with a flexible schedule. So, I have a lot of down time. In that down time is when I get itchy to test another camera and start smaller scaled projects... and that was the point of the GH2. I was looking for a 2nd camera, but everything I've tested since I started using the 5D3 didn't look good to me. So finally I decided that at least I like the stuff I've seen from the GH2. And I wanted the challenge to go back to basics. This stuff is entirely a hobby for me. I'd love to make a short film and get interest from a producer who wants to turn it into a feature, but I'm not 20 years old and I realize that will most likely not happen. So the GH2 will be the hobby camera to my 5D3 hobby. But if you want to start a challenge, I'm in. How about a 5 minute short by the end of the year? I'll use the GH2, and you use the GH3. And if anyone else wants to jump in with an equally old, lower specced camera, then they are welcome to. Oh yeah, and I pledge not to buy another camera until next year... or never.

We edited through bridge in terms of what was needed to fit the shot list - and then looked at the sequence and then stripped out frames to make the cut and paste effect more pronounced ( so to speak ). Actually as I progressed through the campaign of x3 I became more cinematic - by default - but it wasnt porbably what they needed - so we had to strip it down even more to make it more random......the finally cut was passed onto a pro.

Old "Basic I/O Package" Red Raven price was: RED RAVEN BRAIN w/ Media Bay / Canon EF Mount DSMC² Base I/O V-Lock Expander AC POWER ADAPTOR (DSMC) 1 x RED MINI-MAG - 120GB WEAPON RED TOUCH 4.7" LCD DSMC² Universal Handle 1-Year Standard Warranty $9,950 / $1,000 Deposit Now they throw in a FCPX code, two IDX batteries, a Sigma lens and a hardcase all "valued" at around $2000 and sell the new package for $14,999.95. Smart move if you ask me.

  46. Its a bit mind boggling to consider the sort of fanboy cult an alliance between RED and Apple could potentially produce. Its going to be like the moonies merging with the scientologists. Via USB-C

  48. Being brutally honest, most of us here are just camera consumers, right? How many of us are truly filmmakers? I mean, truly? I know I'm not half as prolific as I should be to call myself a "filmmaker." Not really. I feel more like an enthusiast than a filmmaker. In addition to that, it's much more satisfying to complain about stuff I want, but then is undelivered --when it's not perfect, that's a convenient excuse to avoid doing the difficult creative work. (Well, okay, I'm projecting...but I've had my GH5 for a month now and haven't really done anything special with it.) Point is, if you put a decent camera in my hands, I should be able to make something. If I don't, it's not because a company failed to deliver an "x" or a "y" or a "z." Anyway, that's my filmmaker existentialism...pay it no serious mind. Turn back to talk about skin tones, MSRP, and camera mounts.

  49. @jax_rox...I only own 4 Panasonic native lenses...and I bemoan NOTHING...I'm expressing why this mount and camera means nothing to me...please refrain from inferring that you have any idea of my intent with my equipment...you don't....I am expressing my point of view re why this camera does not suit me with an EF mount and I don't give a fuck who Panasonic targeted with this camera...but it's not me...and as for the value in being able to adapt a multitude of lenses to one system....plenty of forum material on the internet.

  50. Short video of Chicago trying the GH5. There is 4K, 180 VFR slomo (with aliasing...), timelapse and hyperlapse. Even though the sensor can't match my 5D and 6D for ISO, the DR seems better for timelapse.
