Samsung NX1's Smart Range+ and 0-255 luma
Francesco Tasselli and one other reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
When the NX1 came out Philip Bloom bought it but didn't use it very much as he said the dynamic range was limited. I thought it was a bit limited too, turns out we were both wrong... Here is the effect of Fast Colour Corrector in Premiere changing output levels to 16-235 for NX1 clips recorded in 0-255 RGB range mode. Original file - blown out clouds... And here is an additional 1-2 stops in the highlights from enabling Smart Range + in-camera - I'd put this camera right up there for image quality now... Right near the top of the pile. Both sample images shot with the superb NXL adapter by the way with Canon 50mm F1.2L full frame FOV and DOF. Thanks Luca2 points -

Good idea. Go out there and make something. Also, there's nothing wrong with shooting non-stabilized handheld footage. I love IBIS, but I don't always want to use it. Sometimes you just need that organic energy of handheld. I'm partial to longer focal lengths regardless. Must be my personality. Close but keeping my distance, y'know?2 points -

The GH2 will have a smaller sweet spot to get the best out of it for sure. When I got my GH3 I found this to be very useful and it is using the GH2:2 points

Looks great, thinking what the dialog might be... SATT: Shaving, A Trial of Thought. VO in gruff voice: "Man. I've got to shave. But how? A razor? Then I'll need shaving cream. Too Messy. Too complicated. Something simpler maybe. Electric razor? Charging. Where to get power? Too complicated. Maybe I'll just grow a beard." END. Here's something to click which inspired the dialog just from watching the ads (didn't buy it, but who needs it, right? ): https://www.masterclass.com/classes/aaron-sorkin-teaches-screenwriting2 points

16-235 in-camera stops the clipping so you should use that option like in my guide if you want to maximise dynamic range without having to fix the clipping problem in post. If you're going to fix it in post using 0-255 in-camera is ok. Smart Range + is a new thing, I saw the effect it had on JPEGs and realised it could be enabled in movie mode as well... I assumed before that it was some kind of Samsung TV thing!!2 points -

I remember back in the Epic days they came up with the M version which people could jump the queue ahead of the X version if they stumped up the money so its not without precedent for them. Not sure whats gone on here as it seems a confused picture as to why they seemingly couldn't deliver until 2018 and now they are available from stock at Apple. I thought there might be some reaction on Reduser to it if they had bypassed a bunch of backorders to favour Apple but there doesn't seem to be. Mind you, Jannard could go on there and tell them all to fuck off and the reaction would pretty much be this2 points -

Mini Review - FS5 + Shogun Inferno
andrgl reacted to Oliver Daniel for a topic
I've had this kit for nearly a year now, so it's time to review it. Thought I'd share a mini review from some notes I've written down. Intro I've been mostly a Sony shooter since 2012 when the FS700 came out. Got the FS5 as an A-cam all rounder, and soon updated it with the raw update and Inferno. Mostly shoot in Slog2 alongside other Sony alphas like the A6500 and A7SII. Best Bits Electronic ND!! Nice ergonomics. Lots of HFR options. Internal XAVC-L HD holds up really well. Really nice monitor (Inferno) - easy to use and quality screen. Continuous slow motion is useful for longer scenes. 4k 100fps - looks great! Raw images look very thick and tasty. Worst Bits Menus are complicated. Internal 4k is nothing to shout about. White Balance, especially in Slog, never looks right (Colour can either be too cool or greenish yellow. ) Often difficult to grade images (but can get great results). Inferno monitor battery life is very poor. Camera is heavier, bigger and harder to use with the Inferno. Continuous slow motion is very noisy. Raw to ProRes 4k is only incrementally better than the Internal XAVC-L HD. EVF viewfinder seems a bit too small. Perspective The idea behind FS-RAW and the external recorder is very attractive, however some users may end up being disappointed with the experience. This is a very stable and reliable camera setup, however if you like to move fast and have a lot of freedom with your tools, this is likely not the right setup for you. To use the FS-RAW update is expensive, and I've found that if you don't plan to shoot RAW but ProRes instead - the difference isn't worth the extra money. It might be to some for special purposes, however I didn't feel the benefit enough. The A6500 beats the FS5 raw to ProRes ProRes image in 4k. Not so much in 1080p. A lot of us think that the more lucrative the setup, the better our images will be. It's definitely possible. But as our smaller, cheaper camera have limitations - the bigger boys also come with significant limitations too. You need more crew, more hard drives, more muscles, bigger tripods, bigger gimbals, bigger sliders, bigger batteries, and a much bigger wallet. If you're thinking of "upgrading" from your mirrorless, be prepared for a much different experience. For me, I do find purpose in using this setup. For some shoots, there's not a better option. But for the majority - being more compact is definitely more favoured. Here's a video I produced on the FS5 with the Inferno:1 point -

On weekends I shoot for personal clients, but I'm full-time during the week as in-house video advertising for an internet based company, and I know first hand how rigged google SEO and page ranking is against original content creators. The irony is that with out them, these aggregators couldn't exist, but google doesn't give a shit if something's original. The only exception, where I think original creators still have a chance, is YouTube, due to rankings being based on likes and subscribers. But then again, places like nofilmschool just embed the YT videos and write some paragraphs below for SEO purposes, and steal the traffic AND the chance for viewers to hit the like button!1 point -

To get nice Sony footage, you have to grade to the death. I enjoy it so it doesn't bother me much. I do like the FS5 though - it's a very robust camera with loads of options. Very modular. Electronic ND. Hard to top wrong with it. I'm just disappointed in the very very minor quality jump of the external Raw to ProRes 4k, other than that, there's not many cameras that can beat the FS5 on value.1 point -

Too much fanboyism, envy and hate out there...Too many self proclaimed (but clueless) camera business analysts...And THIS is simply useless for interested people. Real interested enthusiasts and working shooters are gone - now replaced by "gear lurkers only". They spend weeks upon reading reviews, then buy, use, read even more reviews, then upgrade, replace, resell gear and finally repeat this process ad infinitum...without even producing only one piece of really useful content. Nothing wrong when doing this - just useless for people mainly interested in shooting and NOT in endless talk... In fact, the indecision of gear talkers is the factual bread-and-butter for most review sites. During the old days, I got much inspiration from many sites. Now...I am mainly disgusted by hate, envy, misconception, factual misinformation or even misleading and false statements...Gear talking became more and more boring and useless... BUT...Though there still are many useful sites out there with people who really help and inspire one... Yep...My POV: Shoot first and talk then...1 point

I haven't bought one yet, but that Tokina/Angenieux lens is on my list. I am so happy with my Tokina 24-40mm and its sister the 35-70mm, I may never end up getting one. However, I do remember I didn't love the 24-40mm on Panasonic cameras. I tested it with the G7 and GX85 and it was meh. On Canons and Nikons, it shines. I am on the lookout for a fast 35-70mm for the 5D3. The Nikkor f/3.5 is probably the way I'll go but I am looking for something entirely different for a one lens solution for an upcoming short.1 point

The rumor sites at least provide one product, the rumors. Then they fill it out with featuring content from others and pay the bills with affiliate links. And now they are they are also being parasited by for example NOFS. Fuji rumors for example always seems to know everything first. And he always direct the traffic to the original source when using others content. All good imo. He has now started to watermark the f...k out of his pictures because other sites just steals it straight away without giving credit.1 point -
Definitely, but just to be clear, I do actually work on films. I know I'm on here a lot but I've been shooting a film on the 5D3 since April. My problem is I do have GAS and I want more than one camera. So this idea to go old school, as they say, is my way to stop testing every other camera and work on multiple projects... my more "serious" shorts with the 5D3 and some, for lack of better word, impromptu video/shorts with a GH2. My hands are pretty damn shaky after a pack a day and a few cups of coffee, so I think I am going to go with a Monopod and a mini slider. Of course, last winter, I had some pretty good results with my Benro Monopod, collapsed with the feet open and pressed against my chest. So maybe some kind of shoulder/chest stock will work well, but I'd like to keep the footprint as tiny as possible... Any ideas?1 point

Those shots look really nice! I've been on the fence for so long about completing my ai-s set, but it was the short focus throw that was putting me off. However, if the non-ai lenses have a longer focus throw & by the looks of your shots, think I might be going in this direction - longer focus throw will be useful for some of the anamorphics i've got. The only other consideration might be to go the Medium Format lens route & I've been really impressed by some of these lenses recently - anyone have experience with MF lenses? I don't have any issue with blogs / websites making money from ads / sponsors, as it takes a lot of time to run and therefore I can understand where there would need to be some kind of financial reward. The issue is when the tone, voice and opinions of the content is actually massively affected by the relationships the blogger has, in order not to piss them off and lose their relationships. This is where information get inaccurate, biased and untruthful. Which none of us need. NoFilmschool has turned into a curator of other existing articles and also acts as a general "news" site, whereas others are massively affected by their sponsorship relationships. EOSHD is the only site that's kept this intact.1 point -
And, again for anyone finding this thread in the future, probably the sanest option if you do want manual focus while experimenting with video is something like this C-mount lens These lenses are designed to cover a APSC sensor, so m43 is no problem. One of these, a vintage 50mm, and a use copy of one of the better wide angle converters will give the full frame equivalent of 35, 50 and 100mm for the less than the cost of a lens Turbo. More - https://medium.com/@adam.zivner/review-of-zonlai-25mm-f-1-8-e4ccbac76a1 There also seem to be options for using c-mount lens for smaller sensor sizes by cropping, including the Electronic Teleconverter function, even if that does sound a counter intuitive way of getting a wide angle shot.1 point

I've just picked one of these up and its a pretty nifty little thing. Basically its a series of locking bars that you can easily change to be anything from a selfie stick for Vlogging to a top handle to a shoulder mount or even a poor man's low mode stabiliser. As the joints lock in any angle its really flexible in being able to be shaped to what you need it for. Its really useful in the shoulder mount mode actually because you can make the angle of the piece that runs over your shoulder to be really tight so it hooks in firmly. Each piece also has 3 mounting holes so you can attach handles, mics, lights, monitors, cup holders or whatever else rig enthusiasts like to cram on there if thats your thing. Its light, versatile, folds down small enough to fit in a coat pocket and at £38 its not exactly going to break the bank. With something with IBIS like the GX80 I've got it with here, it gives some great additional stabilisation advantage and still keeps you stealth. https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/Camera-Photo/Movo-SV1000-Aluminum-Combination-Stabilizer/B012Y7UVB4/ref=sr_1_19?ie=UTF8&qid=1498822792&sr=8-19-spons&keywords=movo&psc=11 point

It does not. His BruceX time was 18 sec, mine is 15.8 sec (average of several runs). My 2017 iMac 27 is the 4.2Ghz i7, 32GB, 2TB SSD, RP 580 GPU. His GeekBench 4 multi-core CPU score was 20,300, mine was 20,257. His Cinebench R15 CPU score was better at 1102, mine was 936. These are the vagaries of benchmarking and don't indicate a clear improvement over a factory top-spec iMac. The BruceX benchmark is especially sensitive to technique. Whether you reboot FCPX or macOS each time, whether you have background rendering off, whether you disable Spotlight indexing and Time Machine before running the benchmark -- all those have an effect. He was either unaware of these or did not mention them.1 point

Sure that sounds good and should we include that if anyone else wants to join, then they at least have to shoot in 1080p? Or do we want to limit this to GH1/GH2/GH3? Yeah, the 5D3 is just like nothing else I've ever used and it's probably the easiest camera to shoot with and grade. The conversion process can be a little tedious but there are ways around that now. I hope the GH2 is all I think it will be. If not, it's my own fault and I'll have to work on those things I feel are lacking.1 point

I didn't read your post because its was to long and probably just useless insults. But to the rest, here meanwhile is actually showing and proving exactly my point in the first post. He haven't even read the article from Reuters that writes about a successful outcome for an investor in a profitable company. Instead he goes by NOFS click bait fake news headline that was first started by a hatemonger/blogger that nows squat about pretty much anything. So what we have is a chain where everyone only reads and takes in the fake sidetrack story while at the same time believing that what they say originated from the original source. And we all know this is a global problem in actual news as well. People want to believe the fake version of things rather than reality. We see it in politics, war, you name it. And it is a problem.1 point -

Mini Review - The MOVO Foldable Pocketable Rig Type Of Thing
luminescence reacted to BTM_Pix for a topic
How well it works for that specific movement will vary from person to person I suppose. My own physiology isn't conducive to decent walking shots anymore because of the amount of damage I've done to my shoulder over the years but the MOVO does improve it over handheld. What is interesting about it though is that it can be shaped in so many different ways so I've done some experiments with turning the last piece up instead of down so it hooks under the shoulder which with my physiology is actually a bit better. So the answer I suppose is that it depends ! But there is a ton of flexibility to it that you can find a way that suits you personally better. I've just done this quick illustration for you of what else you could do if you put it into a more basic inverted L shape. Because of the mounting points on all of the arms you could side mount two cheap pistol grips (I only have one so you'll have to use your imagination but basically it would go directly on the other side!) to do something with a different take on the Fig approach where it would be gripped like handlebars. I've put the other picture from the other thread of the grip being used in a more conventional way for anyone who is only looking at this thread and hasn't seen it. A couple of these grips (which are inexpensive and way hardly anything) can do offer a lot of scope with the MOVO without breaking the bank or your back. Grips are here https://www.amazon.co.uk/Neewer-Handheld-Stabilizer-Panasonic-Samsung/dp/B018LQEFL4/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1501604216&sr=1-1&keywords=Neewer+Camera+Handle+Pistol+Grip1 point -

So what did people settle for by now? I'm considering getting a cage so I can mount a quick release plate via 2 screws but also to occasionally mount accessories like a field monitor, video mic or a top handle. Looking at the market currently has a bunch of stuff but some prices are just silly for what a cage does (is it so expensive to CNC a piece of aluminium?) or badly fitting. These seem to be the currently as of this post available cages I could find with a link to their product page (of existing) and a subjective opinion: 8Sinn http://www.8sinn.com/index.php/8sinn-gh5-cage.html - Around 199 $ for just the cage alone (ends up at 220€ in Europe). CameTV - 298$ but comes with a riser for rod and a top handle. Chrosziel http://www.chrosziel.de/neu-system-700-gh5/?lang=en - 295€ for cage and top handle, has an integrated Manfrotto compatible dove tail JTZ DP30 - Minimum configuration is the cage with a top handle, riser with rods. Very modular as camera to cage, cage to riser and riser to base plate have quick release connections (looks more Arca Swiss than Manfrotto though?). Difference to other cages is that the cage has electronic connections with camera and top handle (and optional hand grip kit, etc.). Starts at 359€. Lockcircle https://www.lockcircle.com/store/?p=robotskingh5 - Half-cage alone is already 439€, 539€ for full cage. Movcam - Looks like a copy of the slightly earlier released 8Sinn cage, also roughly same price it seems. Seercam http://seercam.com/shop/cube-gh5/ - Starts at 250$ for cage only. Has an integrated dovetail for their optional rod riser. SmallRig http://www.smallrig.com/smallrig-dslr-cage-for-panasonic-lumix-gh5-1965.html - I had the A6300 cage and that was great for the money but this one seems to fit rather poorly on the grip side. Is it comfortable to hold it? Also got mixed reviews regarding access to the top control buttons. 89$ Tilta https://tilta.com/shop/tilta-panasonic-gh-series-cage-es-t37/ - 350$ and comes with cage, top handle, rod riser, screw-on rod holder and HDMI clamp. Camera mounts into the cage via quick release plate. Varavon https://varavon.com/products/zeus-gh5-cage?variant=40977115270 - Cage only incl cable clamp comes for 219$. Zacuto https://store.zacuto.com/gh5-cage/ - Comes with a hand strap and is going to cost you 495$. ...and then there are of course all the generic cages and half cages that are just a aluminium square to mount your cam into or are two plates connected with 15mm rods for height adjustment. You could say there is something on the market for everyone, different form factors, features and prices points (~ 90 - 500$ for the cages alone). What is important though: not all of the cages allow to use the XLR audio adapter on top, especially when using the top handle. I really like what Tilta and JTZ DP30 are doing by having the camera mount into the cage on a quick release plate. This allows you to quickly take the camera out of the cage and slap it onto a gimbal where even the small weight increase of the cage might be a deal breaker. On the other hand there is something to be said for really form fitting cages like 8Sinn and Movcam.1 point

Yeah all Nikkor lenses are pretty sweet. I recently bought the 35mm 1.4 and it is crazy good with ML Raw... I think I still have the pre ai 50mm f2... I think I have both the scalloped and the later K version. I'll have to give them a try on the 5D3. Right now I am in the middle of shooting a short with EF lenses, but my next project will be all Nikkor lenses, so your shots are a good reminder to be on the lookout for some good deals. I also used to have the 35-70mm f/3.5 and that was a really nice zoom. It would probably be great speedboosted on the G85. And do you have, or did you have, the ai-s 50mm 1.2? I know a lot of people don't like that lens because it's soft wide open, but I love that dreamy look.1 point

Panasonic GH5 - all is revealed!
TheRenaissanceMan reacted to Phil A for a topic
Using the GH5 for quite a bit of photography and some little video clips. Using it with a combination of the (really great) Voigtländer 17.5mm f/0.95, Olympus 12-40mm f/2.8 and the Samyang 35mm f/1.4 & 85mm f/1.4 both on a dumb adapter and a focal reducer. My personal opinion: it's maybe one of the least emotional/passion inducing cameras I ever had, I don't feel any excitement about it... but... it's probably the most usable camera I ever had. Can 100% approve and would recommend to 95% of all DSLR/MILC users without hesitation if asked. It doesn't have mind blowing dynamic range, the low light is just ok, the colors are good but not Fuji good, it's comically big for a camera with such a small sensor. But it just is very well thought out (nothing is perfect). The swively screen, high quality EVF, touch screen works well, WiFi function very usable, AF-S perfectly fine for my photography uses, focus peaking & magnification very well implemented, rather good battery run time (eh, I come from Sony!). I had none of the issues people complain about on the internet so maybe I'm just lucky. I think the only drawback is the native lens system if you come from an APS-C / FullFrame system with a good choice of fast native lenses and are completely set on that look.1 point -
