  1. I recently decided to find out which of the current 1080/120fps capable cameras does it the best. Read the full article

  2. Sometimes we need to enhance the detail of a shot: a very soft lens, slightly out of focus, slow motion, post cropping (for story/emotion or after stabilization), and so on. Most are familiar with the sharpen effect and the unsharp masking effect. We can combine both effects, as well as use unsharp masking to create a local contrast enhancement effect as well. Canon 1DX II and Canon 50mm 1.4 at 1.4, 1080p (Filmic Skin picture style): Multi-spectral Detail Enhancement (let's call it MSDE, based on the physics of Acutance) Fine noise grain: adds texture and increases perception of detail (Noise effect: 2%, color, not clipped) High frequency sharpening: in PP CC this is called Sharpen (as a standalone effect) or via Lumetri/Creative/Sharpen (as used here: 93.4) Mid frequency sharpening: Unsharp masking effect with amount 41 and a radius of 5 Low frequency sharpening (Local Contrast Enhancement or LCE): Unsharp masking effect with amount 50 and a radius of 300 While this may be a bit too sharp/detailed for some, it illustrates MSDE, and one can add detail to taste using this technique. Note we didn't use a contrast effect or curves to achieve this look. MSDE can also be use to improve HD to 4K upscales: apply after upscaling. Also a great way to use Canon's soft-ish 1080p along with DPAF (since it's not currently available in any other cameras on the market). The GH5 is the new kid on the block with excellent detail, however Canon still looks more filmic to me and has excellent AF Someday Adobe will GPU accelerate their Unsharp Mask effect (it's a trivially easy effect to code too!), so this can easily run in real-time while editing.

  3. Sorry, yes, it's the 0.64 XL Metabones I have. Oh, yes, things are in focus. *8^) And yes, I shoot it at 1.2, though, i guess the B&H Kowa 2X would be the limiting factor, no? I use the Rokkor 58/1.2 for the character. I have yet to do any real work with this combo, just play. I am just a hobbiest, and suffer from a full time max stress job, so, I am still learning all of this. Here is a STILL I took - Panasonic GH5 - Minolta Rokkor PG 58/1.2 EOS mount- Metabones 0.64XL Speedbooster - Bell & Howell Kowa 2X - cheap 4+ diopter The full sized image dimensions are - 10368x3888 Hmm, looks horrible against a white background. Shrug...

I use the SLR zoom model which I think is the largest, and for a GH size camera it has worked just fine for me, its never collapsed or bent when using it as additional support against my body. Sure it may not be as sturdy as a specific shoulder or chest rig, but compared to those its very covert and dual purpose when travelling light. Sorry, I've been swamped recently. We could 'borrow' one of Kodaks old film challenge logos:

PTA was his own Director of Photography on his next film, Phantom Thread (Daniel Day Lewis's last film). Obviously too soon to say how this went for him, but what are your thoughts on this? Biting off more than he can chew? Too many jobs to worry about? Not enough experience? Or entirely worth it for how much he'll gain in creative expression in now each of the main areas of the filmmaking process? (just spitballing)

That's a good idea. I like doing a twist on that logo. I guess a separate thread should be made for it, since it's not limited to any specific cameras?

  10. Adding paint on more paint - the Minolta 58 1.2 plus the Bolex - this time with a Novoflex adapter - for hopefully more critical focusing - but yep still hard to nail it. This is a sweet vibe - almost too much for stills but certainly has hope for the motion world. Yes soft - but the OOF areas look so different and organic - and the flairs can be radical - almost futturistic and techno......

I tend to shy away from quick releases in cages...if everything in the alignment is not locked off solid, the FF will move your lens and camera as you pull focus, and then the shot is ruined...I've even abandoned magic arms, because I can't stand the play in them and how the 1/4 20 fastening wheel suddenly loosens up and your VF or monitor goes flopping to one side or another.

  15. I hate it when I'm watching a tutorial or how-to and the actual how-to part is behind several minutes of pointless blabbing. 8 min video for something that could be explained in 30 seconds or a paragraph. That's the bane of limitless capture.

@PannySVHS....the Tokina you refer to (28-70 2.6) was designed by Angenieux and is optically indistinguishable from their very expensive Cine version!...the Tokina is one if the great bargains in lenses and as you know, the image is lovely!

  17. Even if you do think it's over sharpened at -10 (I don't - it looks similar to a Canon JPEG on default sharpness and no photographers are rounding on Canon claiming their photos are 'over sharpened') then it is a rather easy problem to fix. Downscale to 2.8K then upscale to 4K again. And if you want to fix your shooting style to get a less 'sharp' result there are numerous techniques, easiest being - Black Mist Pro on the lens and softer light, more diffusion.

  20. Trying to make a "filmmaker" living as the industry is getting turned upside down is a challenge. I feel for the young grunts paying their dues in this way. Doesn't seem like a lot of fun. You can't run a website long term with constant 20-something turnover, and exploitation of those folks. The quality will just be too marginal to be compelling. People appreciate and comprehend quality, whatever form it takes. If no one at NFS is mature or talented enough to offer some sort of insight worth considering, why read it? Superficial stuff might get you instant numbers, but if nothing is worth sticking around for then those numbers (people) will drift after a different shining thing. And the internet has quickly become mostly superficial shiny things. I mean, I'm guilty of filling my head with online nonsense for no other reason than I have time to kill. "Hey, I better see what's new and pooping out of the outrage machine! It's been 30 minutes since I last looked!" Bad reason. In contrast, EOSHD is a simple yet legitimate site. The pace here is organic and justifiably so. The site could also easily last as long as the owner wants it to.

  21. I didn't read your post because its was to long and probably just useless insults. But to the rest, here meanwhile is actually showing and proving exactly my point in the first post. He haven't even read the article from Reuters that writes about a successful outcome for an investor in a profitable company. Instead he goes by NOFS click bait fake news headline that was first started by a hatemonger/blogger that nows squat about pretty much anything. So what we have is a chain where everyone only reads and takes in the fake sidetrack story while at the same time believing that what they say originated from the original source. And we all know this is a global problem in actual news as well. People want to believe the fake version of things rather than reality. We see it in politics, war, you name it. And it is a problem.

  22. I haven't been following many of those sorta sites or forums (NoFilmSchool, Cinema5D, REDuser, dvxuser, etc) as they always seemed to be for the bit more hardcore cinematographers and fanboys. Especially the forums, with a maze of subforums and early 2000's layout and users with no patience for newbies. No country or normal men. Nah, apart from rumorsites this is about the only place keep checking on the regular. EOSHD has managed to keep a fresh approach and the audience as well as the curator allow for diverse content, though the main theme is: creativity meets common sense. Most revolves around practical and affordable gear and how to use 'em to bring visions to life, not exclusive to people already well-established in the industry. There's a general vibe of chillness, openness, positivity and creativity that makes the forum content range go wherever the crowd takes it. You'll find a lot of passionate enthusiasts here, like me, that might not feel at home that well at other places (where the thing that counts seems to be being init as a professional, rather than doing it for the passion). Apart from EOSHD I think that for the more interesting informative and opinionated content you'll have to head towards YouTube, some channels there are great.

    GH5 Cages

So what did people settle for by now? I'm considering getting a cage so I can mount a quick release plate via 2 screws but also to occasionally mount accessories like a field monitor, video mic or a top handle. Looking at the market currently has a bunch of stuff but some prices are just silly for what a cage does (is it so expensive to CNC a piece of aluminium?) or badly fitting. These seem to be the currently as of this post available cages I could find with a link to their product page (of existing) and a subjective opinion: 8Sinn http://www.8sinn.com/index.php/8sinn-gh5-cage.html - Around 199 $ for just the cage alone (ends up at 220€ in Europe). CameTV - 298$ but comes with a riser for rod and a top handle. Chrosziel http://www.chrosziel.de/neu-system-700-gh5/?lang=en - 295€ for cage and top handle, has an integrated Manfrotto compatible dove tail JTZ DP30 - Minimum configuration is the cage with a top handle, riser with rods. Very modular as camera to cage, cage to riser and riser to base plate have quick release connections (looks more Arca Swiss than Manfrotto though?). Difference to other cages is that the cage has electronic connections with camera and top handle (and optional hand grip kit, etc.). Starts at 359€. Lockcircle https://www.lockcircle.com/store/?p=robotskingh5 - Half-cage alone is already 439€, 539€ for full cage. Movcam - Looks like a copy of the slightly earlier released 8Sinn cage, also roughly same price it seems. Seercam http://seercam.com/shop/cube-gh5/ - Starts at 250$ for cage only. Has an integrated dovetail for their optional rod riser. SmallRig http://www.smallrig.com/smallrig-dslr-cage-for-panasonic-lumix-gh5-1965.html - I had the A6300 cage and that was great for the money but this one seems to fit rather poorly on the grip side. Is it comfortable to hold it? Also got mixed reviews regarding access to the top control buttons. 89$ Tilta https://tilta.com/shop/tilta-panasonic-gh-series-cage-es-t37/ - 350$ and comes with cage, top handle, rod riser, screw-on rod holder and HDMI clamp. Camera mounts into the cage via quick release plate. Varavon https://varavon.com/products/zeus-gh5-cage?variant=40977115270 - Cage only incl cable clamp comes for 219$. Zacuto https://store.zacuto.com/gh5-cage/ - Comes with a hand strap and is going to cost you 495$. ...and then there are of course all the generic cages and half cages that are just a aluminium square to mount your cam into or are two plates connected with 15mm rods for height adjustment. You could say there is something on the market for everyone, different form factors, features and prices points (~ 90 - 500$ for the cages alone). What is important though: not all of the cages allow to use the XLR audio adapter on top, especially when using the top handle. I really like what Tilta and JTZ DP30 are doing by having the camera mount into the cage on a quick release plate. This allows you to quickly take the camera out of the cage and slap it onto a gimbal where even the small weight increase of the cage might be a deal breaker. On the other hand there is something to be said for really form fitting cages like 8Sinn and Movcam.

  26. Really like it. Better in so many ways than the GH4. For paid jobs I really think this is a versitile and really killing combo vs more expensive and bigger cameras. But when I shoot own shortfilms, musicvideos or other more 'art' stuff I would like to have more DR, better motion, even better colors and so on. But have to say in those kind of jobs, GH5 is really capable also! Here is my latest musicvideo with GH5:

  27. The way the contrast detect based AF on the GH5 works is by cranking the sensor to frame rates of 240fps, maybe even higher, and very CPU intensive analysing of bokeh and depth of field (DFD mode). So you can't expect AF to be as fast at 24p in video mode as it is in stills mode. What Panasonic need to do is get Dual Pixel AF technology on the sensor. It is the only reliable way of doing good AF for filmmakers. The phase-detect A6500 route is a dead-end, it's just not bomb proof enough. It hardly ever tracks reliably, especially in low light. Meanwhile good old manual focus has resulted in many classic films, so I suggest we stop being so lazy and use that instead

  28. Well I, for one, will be using the raw codec almost exclusively on this camera. Thus I am not really concerned about what you perceive as this camera's biggest weakness.
