I don't know what they will do with D5600 replacement but they won't release entry level DSLR anytime soon. The next big thing is mirrorless in first half of 2018. By the way, it should be embarrassing for Canon that the first DSLR with focus peaking is from Nikon known for its irrelevancy in video market.3 points -

Another topic this brings up is "how to sell an un-sell-able opinion". Mr. Damore's opinion is one that easily creates a lot of negative press regardless of whether what he said is correct or not. As filmmakers we might therefore ask ourselves, how do we best present something that people do not want to hear? How do we successfully preach against the choir? Metaphors is as discussed earlier one technique. For the last few years I have worked on a piece on a very controversial topic where I want to present something that goes against the main stream opinion. However, I have seen several filmmakers and writers try to do it before, but nobody want to write about them and they gather no support, while content with the opposite narrative is given first page covers. I have still not been able to figure out how I will make my final delivery, but I am starting to believe that the only way to deliver it will be to create a film which seems to deliver the main-stream narrative, but in the end leaves the audience with the gut feeling that "this is not right". It could be done with a twist, slowly adjusting the narrative as the film progresses, or keep the same narrative throughout the story, but let the audience feel like they're on the wrong side.3 points -
Good! Means all future Nikons won't have crop for 4K Good news about finally having focus peaking too! (pity only in 1080.... firmware update??? Please!!)3 points

Me either! I remember when I first joined this forum everyone was looking forward to the next GH camera with a higher bit-rate. What will the GH5 do now, 400? Years ago, a couple of posters would say something along the line of, "The C100 has a great image so I don't care about bits or CODECs." I was watching "Abstract" on Netflix a while back and the Roku was buggy so showing the bitrate, it hovered around 19mbits. They're shooting Red Epic Dragons with anamorphic Primes, RAW I'd assume, 16 gig a minute.. But in the end, all I see is 19mbits. So the question is, if a camera can give you 19mbits a second and it LOOKs like "Abstract" what difference does it make how many megabits are recorded in the forest? Anyway, mjpeg is the "RAW" version of jpeg compression. It is frame by frame, unlike video CODECs that calculate compression through a series of frames. That is, mjpeg is the camera's BEST stills compression technology at 24 or 30 frames a second. Why wouldn't one want that? I mean how can you say that's bad and the 400mbits nonsense (sorry) of the GH5 is good?2 points

I completely understand this because I think President Trump is an African American Woman because I choose to use a different definition of the words African and Woman. What in the hell are you talking about, Ed? You don't get to choose the definition of words to suit your narrative. I know it's a political tactic to do so, but this isn't a political forum. You know... I also was trying to stay out of this conversation but after reading this nugget, I had to have my one and only reply... Words have meaning and power. People can choose to use words incorrectly, but that would make that person ignorant and subsequently make their opinion moot. Or it's deliberate for a very specific political motive. Neither reason is acceptable. A major issue in our society is the misuse of words and the miscommunication of intent. If you're unsure of the proper definition of a word, look it up. Your argument may become clearer and your points not so divisive. Or maybe you know exactly what these words mean and this aww shucks routine is the character you play? Trump is a lot of things, but a white nationalist is not one of them. It's a moronic argument used as a scare tactic to like minded people that don't think for themselves. There are plenty of valid arguments to be made for President Trump or against President Trump, but that ad hoc attack just keeps the narrative and debate in the whacko realms of the Far Left and Far Right and I would rather hear discussions and points made by the rational center, where most humans reside.2 points

Seems to be an awesome camera. Really pushing the envelope. But we will have to wait and see, since specs doesn't mean jack. Native base of iso 64 is a big deal. As a film shooter I've always hated that most cameras bottoms out at 200 without using expanded.2 points -
Fingers crossed the D5600 successor doesn't have crop for 4K (and has focus peaking in 4K!). As I'm certainly not buying a D850! But a D5x00 series camera is one I can easily afford if I wish. I guess a slim possibility that the D5600 successor might be so low end they'll keep the crop for 4K with that. But I feel 100% confident that all new cameras that are higher end than D5x00 series will no longer have a crop for 4K. :-)2 points

It's a great stills camera though, if I were looking at a FX camera, this would be it. Not a Sony, but this. 12 bit raw in video? Nope. 12 bit raw in stills? Definitely. In fact there should be a 14 bit option.2 points

For me, it's a great shame the world seems to go from racial and religious division, through political division and onto cultural division so often, like a cycle, and it looks like we're going through one of those phases again, which leads to a world war. The first thing to happen is the mob mentality, where dissenting voices in the crowd are dismissed even if they might be reasonable and logical. Be it a far-left uprising or a far-right one, I hate all extremists. Fighting Nazis is very noble but there are quite a lot who now consider all conservatives or anybody slightly right of centre on certain issues to be flat out evil people. I don't buy that and the Google thing shows that there's a huge, uncontrollable politically correct mob at corporations who can't have an honest debate about certain subjects because they're taboo.2 points -

A good decision! 1. Speed Booster XL has the most full-frame-like look, unless you want to avoid vignetting on APS-C lenses then go for the Ultra. Also if you want the absolute best corner sharpness go for the Ultra. 2. Not tried the battery grip as the internal battery last ages and spares so easy to carry! Might improve ergonomics though. 3. The XLR hotshoe audio adapter? 4. 35-100 II... Nah. I'd go for the Olympus 12-100mm F4 instead. Run & gun with AF I take it? 5. Only if you need AF when re-framing a shot otherwise stick to Sigma 6. You don't need it, the screen is fine! Keep it simple. 7. Haha 8. Yes.2 points -

What exactly does a horribly "non efficient codec" entail? I mean video gets recorded, right? And it's a 4:22 codec that's easily editable on most computers, and usually the motion cadence looks great. Okay so a 1.7 crop isn't exactly S35 but it's closer than 2x or 2.4x or 2.88x. And with the crop, a bunch of aps-c lens options open up. I don't care about the this camera is better than that camera game. Each camera is unique to itself and none of them are perfect, but I do think the 5D4 gets a little more hatred than deserved.1 point
-
Stills camera = 100 times less good than D850 (less dynamic range, less mpx, less good AF system ( and -4ev on the D850), no BSI sensor, less features like the new focus stacking,...) Video camera = horribly not efficient codec, super high video file size for 1.7 crop (not S35 actually) and basically no video specs at all VS let's say a GH5. All that for a premium price tag. Anyone in this word who does not own any lens, I see 0 reason to buy a Canon 5D when looking to get FF. If you are going to shoot stills you buy the D850, if video only probably something like GH5 or A7SII and if you shoot both you will probably go to Sony.1 point
-
I don't understand all of the hatred for the 5D Mark IV and its mjpeg codec? It's a 4:22, all-i video codec that is easily editable on most computers, but it has big file sizes. ProRes has big file sizes. Raw has big file sizes. The GH5, after the update, will have big file sizes. Where else are you getting a FF stills camera with a S35mm, Cinema 4K, 4:22, Log image, with arguably the best color science around, and definitively the best AF, for $3000? With all that being said, I hope some of these D850 specs start to trickle down into the lesser models. A 4K D5700 with focus peaking, even if only in 1080p, sounds like a great camera to me. 1080p for the daily grind and some 4K, even cropped, for some novelty shots every now and again.1 point

I've tested my Sigma Arts and Samyangs on the GH5 - loved it! The 18-35mm especially... The Leica 42.5mm is compelling but I don't have a good reason to spend that kind of money on this lens, unless I went nuts on micro 43 photography. I have the Zhiyun Crane V1 and love it with my A6500. Will test alongside the GH5 and see if it can perform anywhere near close to the A6500's pretty great AF. I had a GH3 for 3 years (which at the time, I was in awe of 1080p 50fps!).....so I'm excited about this kit, as I now have far more creative options. Unfortunately, having to wait for V-log - doesn't arrive for over a month!1 point -
THANK YOU NIKON for releasing a great Camera at a decent price unlike the Canon 5D joke at joking price. Unfortunately there is 0 point for me to buy DSLR when A7RIII will be the same camera but twice lighter, IBIS, better video AF, better video specs. But Thanks to you, Sony will release a superb A7RIII that won't cost 4000$ and therefore the A7SIII will be priced good also. However Nikon, if you were to release a Mirrorless version of this D850, with IBIS and Canon like DPAF yet compatible with existing Nikon lens without adaptor. THEN we could talk properly.1 point

I know that, I said so in the article - that pixel binning is better than line skipping. The A99 II, which I own, is a pixel binning 4K camera in full frame and I very much like the images I get from it. Depends on what method of pixel binning they use, as to the quality of the results. We are a long way past line skipping now, it died long ago.1 point -

It COULD be, yes. We won't know until the software is ready. The "original" hardware is compatible with some capturing software, which will probably have a preview window. So unless his app can do anything beyond showing the image input on HDMI, there is nothing innovated. Unfortunately he fails to advertise the project as such (a software project), giving the impression he designed a box that makes all this magic possible. Personally I think that is borderline scamming, but in any case it's against Kickstarterters rules. There are also several free tools to display the video from UVC compatible input devices on Android (i.e. easyCap) - probably that's where he has his idea (and maybe code) from.1 point -

Are any definitions ever clear and objective and absolute? Is anything absolute? No, definitions change or vary per person. I can say someone is "queer" and that means different things to people. Being racist to me means a person who believes one race is superior to others. A white nationalist to me is a racist who also is a nationalist, not a globalist, as Bannon proclaims. Thanks. I do, still think, using real names vs anonymous names keeps people held accountable for what they say, and therefore, less people will go to more extreme comments. They can't hide behind their avatar as easily. But yes, you are right, there are still some people who can get really heated on there. But compared to 4chan and twitter, where racism and antisemitism and mysogynany is allowed to thrive? Language that is extremely painful and inducive towards real-world violence like Pizza Gate and now Charlottesville where a protestor was murdered? Would people here been able to do all this when their names are known. Like the neo nazis in charlottesville - now they are being outted, they are starting to cry as they lose their jobs and get kicked out of schools. And that's the power of responsibility for ones actions. Okay, well, I think a blanket apology is the start of the process. And I offered for you to tell me what I did that brought me into this mess. How can I search for USER or comments when I have over 1000 posts on here and you have 463? How long will that take, vs me asking you to tell me? What video did I make? I don't understand, you speak with UK language "apologising" and "behaviour" and yet you are using American unit of feet. Jon Pais, I will repeat this again, ad nauseum: "Whether or not you agree with what a user writes, you should not delete a thread because you disagree with it." The only reason for the deletion of a thread is if it contains hateful language, and or harassment towards a user including threats of rape (for instance, user offering to give me a 30 ft hose and a golf ball in this thread alone), death threats, and personal attacks. Upon deletion, it is good form to alert the user why the thread was deleted personally. That's what a good, mature human being would do. Your actions to me in handling that thread, and now this one, leave me to make judgement that you are not mature enough to handle the responsibilities of moderating, and I hereby ask Andrew Reid to renounce your title. I ask others to see this as well. Whether or not you have been at the receiving end of Jonpais, and hold your own grudges against me, I ask all of you, to review the facts and make a decision. The amount of harassment I have received in this thread alone would be grounds to having a new moderator step in. One, who, Andrew has said, allows interesting discussions to happen and doesn't like posts that contain swear words directedly personally towards a user such as another victim @Axel, who also, probably doesn't appreciate this. @Andrew Reid1 point

Ah right, you were talking about the 30 FPS output in live view. I have a suspicion that will be JPEG, since sRAW goes down all the way to 11mp, not 8.6mp. Funnily, I'm still primarily a stills shooter, but I've migrated to Panasonic's GH cameras; the stills are good enough and when I do video I get great video, no matter how little I do of it.1 point

My two favorite movies are documentaries (which you can view the full films for free online!!): 1) "Line of Sight". As it gives a very small insight into the world of being a bike messenger (which I live and breath myself! It is what I do in between my freelance jobs as a sound recordist on set), that otherwise the normal average person just can not do. https://www.pinkbike.com/video/299661/ 2) "Fat Head". Because it exposes what nonsense the food pyramid is. And that eating fat is not as evil as everyone seems to think it is. (personally I've been living a Low Card High Fat diet since 2011! And will carry on so for the rest of my life).1 point

Why are you heading from sausageville to jerksville? Can't I discuss what I like? On a forum setup for video shooters using DSLRs? I shoot a couple of times a week with these things. This stuff is damn relevant. Any time I can save using the same sodding camera to shoot decent stills and video improves my profits. Expecting a camera to not have some compromises is ridiculous I agree. But please refrain from pointless bashing of people who have reasonable expectations and a specific requirement: especially when 422 10 bit for instance already exists in a ~$2000 camera.1 point

stills; electronic shutter 6fps full frame, 14 bit. All sRAW are at 12bit. No word whether then 30fps is sRAW or jpeg. If its sRAW then the burst length is the next question. If I can shoot for 10 seconds then I can get 4K 12-bit raw video at 30fps. This would be interesting. Some bits of video in here. High iso looks OK (from what you can see from youtube). personally I am increasingly primarily a video shooter who also shoots stills, when I got the D800 it was the other way round. As Leeys said a good still camera, but thats not why we're 'ere, eh? Good info here (see #8):http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/nikon-d850/nikon-d850A.HTM Looks like buffer allows 200 frames in sRAW, however this was not talking about the burst function. Could be less than that. So 5-8 seconds of raw vid a possibility. Sensor designed by nikon.1 point

I think I know what you mean, but don't people have different values and morals? Do you think, people choose morals and values themselves or they're external? In other words, don't they come from other people who shape their worldview from the youngest age? What about values and morals of the Al-Qaeda trained 5 year old kids - just thinking of an extreme example to illustrate my point. Couldn't it be consumers dollar but not exactly entirely their choice? We all know, half the stuff we own we don't really need, don't we? GAS syndrome anyone? ;). If their free will is based on their values and their values are based on whoever shapes their worldview then is it really their choice in the end? LOL, it's getting confusing so I'll stop here ;). Power is definitely an issue. I could see buying a cheap used phone for this purpose (or a couple - keep one charging on a powerbank). Still possibly a viable alternative to something like a SmallHD 502. That said, the Oct release date seems pretty optimistic, esp for iOS. It sounds like the iOS app is still in development, and Apple's approval process can take awhile. Also, it sounds like the unit itself isn't even out of prototyping, so the Oct timeframe seems really short.1 point -
