D850 released. Nothing to see here, move along

Have you ever shot with the 5D4? because it sounds like baseless erroneous assumptions you are making here.. fyi FHD has improved since the 5D3. As for C-Log it is far from useless.. for matching footage from other C-log cams, getting creative with grades or extending DR.. it doesn't seem to break much on the "dinosaur codec"3 points -

You people give Trump far too much credit. He has zero ideology. He has zero history of any ideology. He's a massive buffoon who loves nothing more than to stir the pot. He'll flip positions in a second. He's a Democrat one year, Independent the next, then an evangelical Republican in time for the Iowa caucus. He's that guy who will contradict himself in the very next sentence and deny to your face that he ever did it. Not because he doesn't know that he did, but because he loves watching it piss you off. His 140 character ideology is about as deep as the ideology of Kim Kardashian. The idea that he is some bleeding heart white nationalist fascist a la Richard Spencer misses the entire bit. And when you have antifa scum hysterically looting and rioting over him, it really makes you wonder who the real fascists are.3 points -

This is the kind of extreme reaction that doesn't help the situation, it just fans the flames. I respect Jon's effort here, he's been a regular poster for nearly as long as I have, he has helped for countless days keep the forum in good shape, approve comments from new users, keep tabs on troublesome ones and keep away the spambots. He has posted his creative stuff, tests, Panasonic stuff especially, and there is no need for me to question his role at all. Don't forget there are 5 mods in total, it's not just Jon with all the power... jgharding, andylee, mtheory and me Maybe I should just remove the role of mod entirely and do it all myself if it is going to cause trouble... Either that, or people need to chill the fuck out. Sure, I agree Ed has had his moments of poor form, contrary opinions, argumentative positions, politics we may not agree with, and so on. It would be a boring forum if we all nodded in agreement with one another though! So by all means, we should argue, we should have it out on one-another, we should mow down bad ideas and criticise, but when all the competitive sport is said and done there should be some time left for the pub. BTW Ed has completely edited the OP Read it again, and it makes more sense. I think we are free to discuss B&H's ethical behaviour and lawsuits. As long as it is based on the facts and both sides of the story are heard and we don't go into vitriolic territory.2 points -

I am a bit disappointed because this thread has turned into an Ed vs everyone else situation, and yes some of it is his fault, but c'mon... http://www.eddaviddp.com Some superb work on here. And he has been using this forum for a very long time. I will miss him if he chooses to leave permanently. So whatever differences you guys forming a mob may have with him, this isn't the place to get personal and hound someone out. It was poor form from Ed, but there's no need to force a guy to back out of the forum permanently and completely overlook what he shoots and what he contributes.2 points -
Hi, Wanted to make something new so I worked on this video for several month. Most of the tilt-shift effect is simulated in post (masking in AE), it's not as good as the real out of focus blur created by TL lenses but much more practical than having a huge drone carrying a DSLR camera. I also modded a GoPro lens that was mounted on a custom made drone (TBS Discovery with Pixhawk FC) to get the "native" effect. The inspiration for this project came from Keith Loutit, the god of tilt-shift timelpase.2 points

Yes I totally understand that. I'm not asking for crazy specs on Canon DSLR. I tried raw on the 5D3 and the whole process is a nightmare with the file size, instability and need to transcode. Raw is the extreme end of the spectrum however there is a middle ground. First I don't think that many "John Q Public" would buy a $3500 camera. Then there are plenty of missing features which are not related to hardware AND would not confuse the average soccer mom. For instance why did we have to wait for so long for 1080/60 ? Plus the peaking, zebra and all these non-computing intensive stuff. Hell if Canon is scared of customer support issue, be my guest and make it a paid upgrade like Panasonic supposedly did for the VLOG on the GH5.2 points

Canon are very frustrating. Their feature choices between models are so trivial. So intricately, and purposefully strategised to the point of almost complete bafflement. The 1DX II doesn't have C-Log. The 5D IV does. The C300II has 10 bit 422, and crippled high frame rates. The C200 has RAW, has 4k60p and non-cropped 120fps. But doesn't have a 10bit codec. The XC10 has 422. The C200 doesn't. The C300 MK I does, which is 6 years old. You could go on forever. Canon should just combine the C200 and C300 II together and sell that. Now that would be a blockbuster! But they won't. At the end of the day, it is just cameras, with specs and buttons and other stuff. We're actually lucky to have so many options in order to tell good stories. But still....2 points -

Canon could care less what we think. Everyone that has commented on this camera has mentioned wanting 10 bit 422, in a reasonable codec... So what does Canon do... They add another 8 bit option that no one wanted, and no one will use. Great work Canon. Basically this competes with any bit camera. Raw will be used in special conditions only, as most simply have not the time to waste with transcoding it. GH5 is a smarter option for 98% of shooters. Eva1 is an option also, but I'm not convinced it is a significant enough upgrade to justify the $7k price tag. I guess we need to see footage to judge. But keep in mind the GH5 is also getting a 400mb codec soon. So all bets are off.2 points -
D850 released. Nothing to see here, move along
maxotics and one other reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
I suppose it solves the problem of the stills camera part, as the D850 can do things, with nicer ergonomics, that a mirrorless camera can't on the stills front - optical viewfinder, 45MP, best AF system in the world from D5, all in one body... Add on video we already have on the A99 II, tweak the colour science and skintones to Nikon's taste, add flat profile instead of S-LOG, making the footage easier to grade, and you have reasons to buy it... but a lot of reasons not to as well, for example the fact the GH5 exists and soon probably the A7S3!2 points -
DPAF isn't the only advantage (it's a big one though!). The 5DIV now has C-Log with view assist. It can shoot full read-out DCI 4K. MJPEG is a high bitrate 422 codec (for some that's a plus). Wi-fi remote capability is superior to Nikons. Another false statement. Canon EF-S lens aren't compatible, but third party APS-C EF mount lenses absolutely are. The Sigma 18-35mm 1.8 is a perfect pair for the 5D4 and gives a very workable range for video work. As for the 4K image quality, I disagree. Sharpness isn't everything (and I wouldn't call the 5D4 4K very soft). As far as color sampling (422), motion, lack of artefacts etc.. the 5D4/1DC/1DX2 DCI 4K is superior to most internal 4K from the competition imo..2 points
-
I've seen many wedding shooters who prefer shooting 1080p, and guess why? They say the size of 4k files are huge! And Nikon bitrate is only 144Mbit/s! And you say 500 is ok? We're a very small minority.2 points

Here is the result of my research this summer, simplified as much as possible: Energy and Information Control in the World Today Flow of Information and Control World Power Our current money is a form of energy accounting. Energy used over time is Power: physics. The world currently runs on the petrodollar: actual energy (oil) and FIAT accounting (Federal Reserve Notes, or FRNs). FIAT is latin for “let it become” and is a kind of IOU. It’s purely an accounting for energy exchange, not based on real tangible assets. Who Rules the World The people who create and control the money supply rule the world: the trillionaire+ Rulers. In the USA it’s the people who control the Federal Reserve (FED), a private banking cartel, which contrary to its name is not under government control. Which means it is not managed by the will of the people of the USA, but rather transnational banking interests. And for every dollar created, we go further into debt and the Rulers become more powerful. The FED creates money out of thin air every time the government borrows money, and in turn every time consumers borrow money from the banks. A major talking point is “reducing the national debt”. However the way the system is currently structured, it’s impossible to pay off the debt. Because of the way the FED makes money on interest for the loans, it’s impossible to pay it off. If the government and consumers stop borrowing money, the system will collapse. The system is entering the terminal stage, meaning that in the near future it will collapse, similar to what happened with the Great Depression, except this time it would happen on a global scale with far greater consequences. Why the USA Seems to be Going Crazy Right Now The USA and it’s allies have the most powerful combined military in the world, by far. If a world war starts, it will provide cover for the Rulers to restructure and create a new monetary system of control while the militaries save us from whatever threat the Rulers have manufactured. While it may seem hard to believe, every major war since the USA was formed was funded by the Rulers. And they funded both sides, including Germany for WWII, and even helping to create communism by supporting Lenin in Russia. The strategy is brilliantly simple: create internal and external division, and fund both sides until they can provide a solution which ends up giving them even more power and control. The Rulers created the terrorism and migrant crises', and now that enough people have realized this, they are concentrating most of their energy in weakening the USA by creating division in any and every way possible. Civil war is clearly one of their goals, as is world war III. They tried with Ukraine and Syria, and now they are focused on North Korea (Iran is still in play as well). The Rulers are brilliantly ruthless. They are lead by psychopaths and sociopaths, who have no mercy or empathy. From a systems power and control analysis, this makes perfect sense that they would rise to the top of power. They can do whatever it takes to win. These same kinds of people also control many top corporations, which are legally ‘individuals’ operating as psychopaths: do whatever it takes to create a profit for the benefit of the shareholders. The reason it appears almost impossible for change to happen in Washington DC, is for two primary reasons. First, the system is completely corrupt, held together by blackmail and bribes. It’s pretty much impossible to prosecute one or a few without the whole system blowing up as pretty much everyone is in on the game. It’s like asking a gang of criminals to prosecute themselves for crimes they have committed: they’ll protect each other and make the case that no crimes have actually been committed. Second, the system is controlled by the Rulers, not the people. The two-party system is a charade. The Rulers understand that millions of people now realize what is going on, and civil unrest is rapidly accelerating. It would appear that marching on DC and demanding change would be a solution. However that could start civil war and marshal law would be declared. This would result in a complete loss of liberty and consolidation of power for the Rulers. They have bunkers all over the world, including some as large as underground cities complete with shopping mails and functioning replacement governments. At least some of them will survive all out global nuclear war and/or biological war based on state of the art targeted bio weapons. The Rulers are a combination of people born into wealth as well as some of the most intelligent people on Earth. They are now using real-time artificial intelligence, operating on social media intelligence gathering, to shape the world view in real-time! They realize that the average person is, by definition, of average intelligence, and historically, large populations haven’t done well to manage themselves or resources without a strong power structure keeping it all together. In their defense, they have a valid point. However, their agenda means to control the population’s behavior, as well as the population's numbers, by any means necessary. Deep down they truly believe they are doing the right thing. While wars are terrible and many have suffered as the result of forced regime changes, overall the world has been more peaceful and prosperous than all of prior recorded history, which has resulted in an unsustainable population explosion. The question for us all, is there a better way? Must we suffer through another global economic disaster if the petrodollar collapses? Must we suffer through a civil or global war in order to facilitate another reset? Crypto currency is seeing massive growth, and people are getting rich from it. While a friend recently boasted of buying a new home from cryptocurrency profits, I suspect crypto may have been developed by the Rulers. Why? Because it was released from a secret source, supposedly from a single person, Satoshi Nakamoto (not a real name). While it’s certainly possible that a single genius developed it and released it anonymously, it’s also possibly the result of a large group of people’s work, as a way to start transitioning away from the petrodollar and providing as-yet-unknown ways of maintaining control of a system which on the surface appears to be fully decentralized. Such a crypto system could contain unseen back doors, especially if NSA level folks worked to help develop it. From a simulation and systems point of view, it would appear that developing many small systems of management and control, which loosely interact to form a larger system, would be a viable ‘better way’. Such as the original idea for the United States. Currently that system doesn’t work, and the Federal government controlled by the Rulers have ultimate authority and control everything, including mainstream media to shape the people’s thoughts through well understood psychology. A peaceful solution would be to walk away from the system. Everyone leave the cities and live in smaller rural communities which are self-sufficient: making their own food, clean water, shelter, and anything else they need to live a good life. By using barter or some other system of energy accounting, no taxes would be paid other than minimal taxes as required by current law for land, etc. The Rulers realize this, and communes in the past which have tried this have been labeled cults and once large enough have been ended by the Rulers. So What can We Do? With a goal of minimizing global suffering, and to promote a good life for as many people as possible, the first step is education. For as many people as possible to understand how the global system currently works, and who’s doing what and why in terms of information exchange. A financial system reset is needed: can we figure out a workable soft reset, so we can prevent war? The difference today vs. the past is the internet is a giant, intelligent being. With the combined intelligence of everyone online, along perhaps with artificial intelligence systems, we should be able to develop a stable, healthy, and sustainable system that has never existed before. For the so-called Age of Aquarius: a new way of living not based on consumption, which is unsustainable on a planetary scale. As media creators, first and foremost our mission in education is healing division. Once we stop taking what’s going on in Washington as a real, functioning system, vs. the Theater for Division, we can collectively focus on what’s necessary to improve the system without collapse. Perhaps this starts with the FED and financial systems, including a restructuring of the tax system. Simplifying and streamlining the system to remove hidden wastes of energy (money) will result in massive improvements for the quality of millions of lives, all over the world. In summary, we the people of Earth must develop a new way of living sustainably, which we can test via artificial intelligence and simulation systems before trying it out on the world. At the same time, these modeling systems can give us real-time feedback in ways never before possible to fine tune the system’s performance to more quickly reach working solutions.2 points

"I hope the D850 looks as clean and doesn’t suffer too much from the pixel binning, which can hurt low light performance and increase moire & aliasing." Please @Andrew Reid, don't confuse "Pixel Binning" with "Line Skipping". They are two different things with totally different results! The D90, D3s, D300s, D5100, D7000 where all line skipping cameras, like all the Canon DSLR's in FHD. But the D5200, D5300, D5600, D5600, D7100, D7200, D810, D750, D5, D500, D7500 (I hope I didn't missed any) are all using pixel binning in FHD with minimal moire and aliasing but with detail not as high as an image obtained from full sensor readout with resizing (like on the GH5, A6300, A6500, A9 etc). By the way, thanks for the video feature summary, the other sites are focusing to much on the still capabilities of the D850.2 points

This is exactly what happens in the real world. This thread is fundamentally about control. In the business world, the manager(s) lay down the law for what is acceptable behavior. Folks who never learned how to behave politely are given a chance with warnings. If they don't learn they are fired. Managers and leaders in general must lead by example. If managers can't manage a team in harmony, they are fired. They too are given warnings/encouragement before being let go. In the world of wild dogs and wolves, the alpha male leads the pack. He is dominant on the one hand to maintain order, and at the same time able to provide for the pack. If he is either weak or fails to provide, the wolves will either find another strong leader or attack and kill the weak leader. This is also known as the Law of the Jungle. If you watch any series/movies about ancient times, such as e.g. Game of Thrones, Gladiator, The 300, The Last Samurai, you'll see all the complexities of leading, following, and surviving. Metaphors and parables for what is still happening today. In a quest for equality and an alternative to the Law of the Jungle, we've tried to make things more fair with the Rule of Law, jury by peers, etc. to settle disputes. This requires a fair and balanced legal system as well as law enforcement which is also kind and fair. The system has a fundamental flaw, in that it is adversarial. It can become a game where opposing sides try to out lie the other: all about competition and winning. To improve the system, those who use deception must be sanctioned and/or barred from practice (law enforcement, lawyers, and judges). Empathetic behavior should also carry a reward. Is this forum running on the Rule of the Jungle or the Rule of Law? The algorithm is simple: warn folks who are behaving unprofessionally and/or divisive, privately. If that doesn't work warn them publicly (without pointing out they were already warned privately). If that doesn't work ban or fire them. This applies to everyone, members and moderators. Have empathy for everyone, understanding that there is a major psychological war going on, and many people don't even know they have been programmed. Much of our behavior is unconscious, and many people aren't even aware of what they are doing. When challenged about their behavior, they are still unaware of why they are doing it, and a clever part of the mind programming they have been subject to starts up a powerful ego defense program. We've all seen this behavior with the hordes of social justice warriors (SJWs, doesn't matter which 'side'). If we're to heal the world, we must first educate everyone about what is going on, then work on healing the programmed SJW's (not intended to be a derogatory label). This is similar to dealing with Narcissist Personality Disorder (NPD). This label should not be used as a weapon against anyone. This forum also features an "ignore user" option: ignoring narcissistic behavior is also an effective feedback tool for unkind behavior for regular users (mods would still warn privately).1 point

I would think an A7s or A7sII would be a good choice. Excellent at high ISO, very respectable output for both photo and video. 12MP stills should be enough for music/performance art type photography. Downside is full frame lenses are generally larger and more expensive.1 point -
GH5, no troubles with heat, rolling shutter is kept in check, tons of cool features, sweet battery life, cardslot is on the side and dual slot type, proper audio interface... ISO is now supposedly pretty solid up to ISO3200. Nice 'n grippy for handheld shooting; especially with the 5-axis B.I.S. and optional Dual I.S. (2.0). Vari-angle display with well-implemented touchscreen. Tons of compact native lenses as well, as you know. Keep it light and throw it on a gimbal. And... people seem to be enjoying it for stills as well, for which it also has numerous interesting features. Like, don't get me wrong, the pixel level results from the A6500 sensor are pretty great, like, the amount of dynamic range, level of detail, high ISO noise performance, really great stuff and all. But once you look beyond that, it really falls apart. The body is just rubbish. Like, Sony... c'mon, take notice, all other crop sensor mirrorless camera flagships are pretty nice bodies. GH5, E-M1 Mark II, X-T2, NX1, even the Canon EOS M5 for Pete's sake. But no, they went for a super cute small footprint camera, because that's what Sony envisions the people want. Btw, there's not other choice, there's just one model of this generation APS-C Sony mirrorless camera, atleast the other manufacturers are giving you the smaller ones as an option, not forcing you to go along with it. With flagship cameras you expect great things, but that's hard to realize when you've got only so little space to make it happen... so, chip infrastructure is baaaaddd. That's why you get massive rolling shitter. Heat dissipation is more or less non existent, leading to recording interruptions and camera shutdowns. They've come up with a 'solution': tripod mode! So basically you raise the threshold for overheat protection to kick in, that however renders your camera sooo friggin' hot, that you are no longer supposed to shoot handheld with it. I mean: c'mon son! Anyways, some people are willing to make that work or claim it's not that bad, all I know is: I can't just rely on it at any given time. But ok, we'll shut our eyes and pretend we didn't see anything. Still, the body is terrible. The cardslot is co-located at the battery compartment, you can't imagine how happy I was when the G80 had gotten a dedicated cardslot on the side, rather than the G7's one that's at the battery compartment as well. The battery itself is tiny and doesn't last very long, don't you just love changing batteries all the time? Yeah, well, me neither. There's no dedicated headphone jack for monitoring. It lacks a sizeable grip for comfortable holding. The screen flips, but not all the way up, nor is it of the vari-angle type that flips up from the side so you can still mount a mic on top and still see the screen. It's a touchscreen now, but the implementation is rather limited, you'd expect more from a manufacturer who's in the smartphone game (although, I'm not suprised they're not killing it, the new XZ1 for example looks amazing on paper... just like their cameras, in reallife... they just don't win you over). Like honestly, what were they thinking here. Back to the image, atleast that's alright, right? Well, like I said, tons of rolling shutter and especially color at its default settings is appaling... even generates color channel clipping. You can make it work, but it takes you a lot of tweaking... don't know about you, but I rather get stuff done than dicking around. That's why people love Canon so much, they're like the opposite of Sony. Don't care about innovation, about specs, how it looks on paper. They just want you to pick it up, shoot with it and find the results pleasing with the minimum effort that went into it. Their AF is on point, colors are pleasing right of the bat, light codec 1080p only on many of their cameras so NLE's slices through the footage like a hot knife through butter. But you know, for how long can you really ignore con-/prosumer need for 4K? Slowmo? Sensor stabilization? Vari-angle screens & mic-in port? Etc. So, you're kinda in between these two extremes. And with the Sony btw, lenses. Argh, their lens philosophy. For a good 3 years now their mirrorless lens line-up has been dead (if not taken into account big bulky expensive ENG/Cinestyle zooms), no development no releases whatsoever. At this point the APS-C E-mount cameras are entry level fullframe cameras for poor souls unable to afford the A7 line-up. Atleast with the A6x00 they can start building their fullframe lens collection and wait until they have enough money to upgrade. Don't know man, not cool! For me one of the main benefits of a crop sensor mirrorless body is the fact that the lenses are small, the body itself doesn't even matter all that much, but if you can keep lenses compact, you've found the secret to a compact system! Sony fails to embrace this. Another big no-no for me! It just all adds up... to something that's disappointing, but like, I was looking forward to the A6300 when rumors of it were leaked and it got closer and closer to launch, because I do like the APS-C performance, I think it's a sweetspot. You get a bit more dynamic range and are able to squeeze a little bit more juice out of the colors. High ISO lowlight noise performance is really respectable. Obviously the crop is less, so your options to go wide angle are better. It's easier to establish a shallow depth of field. All true. Like the occasional fullframe look? Throw on a focal reducer! Still, you have the option to keep lenses small... atleast, with those manufacturers that are willing to embrace that path. Like honestly, I'd probably pick the APS-C Fujifilm X-T2 instead (there were rumors of a videocentric X-T2s, but it has been pretty quiet for a couple of weeks now I believe) or the good ol' Samsung NX1, though, that one really doesn't cope very well at high ISO either. Both the Fuji and Samsung have a bit similar issues that make 'em less appealing. First is the less flexible lens mount option, with no electronic adapters either. No sensor stabilization is a biggie for me. And no vari-angle screen, plus the X-T2 isn't touch sensitive either. To me both Panasonic GH5 and Olympus E-M1 Mark II are what mirrorless crop sensor bodies should be all about. Like, there's hardly anything bad to say for them. You might only be able to 'blame' them for not having APS-C/FF sensor performance. But if that otherwise gives you everything you could ever dream of wanting and be compact at that as well... it's easy to find ways to make it work out just fine. So until someone comes up with something like the GH5 in terms of body and features and throws in an APS-C sensor, for me: Micro Four Thirds it is.1 point

Canon's brand in photography is getting known for being behind on technology and too conservative. I can completely understand the business / customer / support reasons for not having raw video on a DSLR. But as a gesture of goodwill they should release a development platform camera for enthusiasts, which has a full SDK supplied with it on digital media, an open OS for Magic Lantern to fully develop the functionality, and to make features like raw video bullet proof reliable. And Canon's consumer division will NOT offer support for it. It's supplied as-is and not sold in regular shops to regular Joes. It would take minimum effort for Canon to do this and reap HUGE PR rewards, but they won't do it because A) not imaginative enough and B) it isn't a billion dollars of sales to pros.1 point -

What's your opinion on these GH5 items?
mercer reacted to Fritz Pierre for a topic
I've had no vignetting with the XL speedbooster...on APS-C...bought the 12-60 PL as an afterthought to try with the rack focus feature on the GH5 and have to say I love this lens...only 1/2 a stop slower than the 12-35 at 35mm and outdoors I appreciate the extra 25mm of reach...Although I don't own it, I think the Leica 42.5 is the best lens out there for the price....period...the image is ridiculously good...I own the Leica 25 1.4, and although the 25 has an almost 3D quality wide open, the 42 is just in a league of its own..regardless of M4/3, S35 or FF IMO...I do use my GH5 with an Atomos Shogun shooting to SSD cards in Prores 422 HQ 800mbs...the data penalty is high but the image, focus and exposure tools and my needs suit that combo...anyway...I think you will love this camera...it's truly a great camera to shoot with, and one where the potential is just beginning to get tapped!1 point -

The only one I’d recommend outside of lenses is the SmallHD 501/502. If you mount it on the hotshoe with the SmallHD pan/tilt mount it ups your game. Its so light you won’t even feel it. http://store.smallhd.com/store/500-700-pan-tilt-mount connect with an Atomos coiled HDMI. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1065085-REG/atomos_atomcab010_1_x_coiled_full.html1 point -
I agree that the Alexa renders in a duller way than film, in just the way you mention. To that extent, the Sigma DP Merrills aren’t a great film replacement, either. I’m really not sold on how skin tones look, and the over/under is more similar to slide film than it is to color negative. But the image is about as detailed as (and much less grainy than) a good 6x7 Velvia scan, with good color rendering and highlight rendering and nice high frequency detail, too. For landscapes and still life it’s a viable alternative to a Mamiya 7 with slide film. For candids and street photography where you want more texture and character, I’m not at all sold. The LCD is really bad, unfortunately. Somewhat like large format slide film, the DP2 Merrill has a transparent look to its image. It doesn't look like film or digital, it looks like the scene you shot (if you expose carefully)... Given its size and price, that's reason enough to recommend it to landscape photographers in particular. But no, it's not a direct film replacement, and behaves more like slide film than color negative. Worth a try, though. I really like mine.1 point

Panasonic GH5 - all is revealed!
Emanuel reacted to stoneinapond for a topic
Thanks Fritz. Video author here. As you've pointed out, I was shooting in an environment that didn't lend itself to "cinematic" shots, which require a little more setup. I was constantly on the move and working with a very new-to-me lens combination. But with the necessary preparation the lens and adapter can absolutely be used for narrative work, delivering a nice shallow depth of field when needed, and it also flares very pleasantly. All for $500. I'm impressed too.... ;-) There is no major cropping. There is a tiny amount applied when using FCP X stabilization to moderate some of the handheld drifting, but the GH5 sensor stabilization is excellent in that regard. The lens combination is very sharp edge to edge, with no vignetting.1 point -
there's a happy compromise though which NX1 users can tell you about For what I do 24-28MP would be more than enough for stills. Any canon still shooters here should try to borrow a d800/810/850 and shoot raw for a couple of days. I went from canon to nikon and it totally changed the way I shoot. Exposing for the highlights and not worrying too much about the shadows... knowing the deepest shadows would be a purple banded mush. If you know shoot in high dynamic range situations its no biggee.1 point

Regarding Trump, Left, Right, etc. it's all theater for division. You can look deeper to see what is really going on:1 point -
Stills camera = 100 times less good than D850 (less dynamic range, less mpx, less good AF system ( and -4ev on the D850), no BSI sensor, less features like the new focus stacking,...) Video camera = horribly not efficient codec, super high video file size for 1.7 crop (not S35 actually) and basically no video specs at all VS let's say a GH5. All that for a premium price tag. Anyone in this word who does not own any lens, I see 0 reason to buy a Canon 5D when looking to get FF. If you are going to shoot stills you buy the D850, if video only probably something like GH5 or A7SII and if you shoot both you will probably go to Sony.1 point

Another time I have to agree with jonpais. That 12-60mm Leica glass for MFT has a very sharp look but not the beautiful cinephile pleasing flavor of beautiful mechanic glass. It rather seems a lens for corporate stuff. Tested it shortly today and was wondering why it was so hard to make footage look cinastiqueeeelicious! In a controlled and lit enviroment I bet I can put out a very unique super futuristic look. A cool, possibly brutal, maybe scifi but so to call very digital look in its own right.1 point

LOL Canon... C200 Codec "Upgrade" details announced
EthanAlexander reacted to mercer for a topic
I find it highly suspect. A lot of the aforementioned, middle codec specs are specific to the codec in the XC10/15, so I agree that it may be 8 bit but I would expect that it will be 4:22 recorded to CFast cards. Or Canon fears the backlash of the expensive media, so they dumbed it down to record to SD cards. Until the firmware path is updated on their website, it's all just conjecture.1 point -
I wasn't expecting GH5 level of video features on the D850. Let's face it, the GH5 is nothing short of a technological marvel. However, I was happy to see "no crop" 4K on the D850. Hallelujah! Canon appears to purposely cripple their DSLRs for video. Crop on the 5D Mk IV 4K. No 4K at all on the brand new 6D Mk II. At least Nikon is finally pushing ahead. Focus peaking and slo-mo on 1080p is nice, although it would be nice to have that on 4K. Nikon's codec is very good, and the colors are good. I'm anxious to see some samples.1 point

LukiLink project turns smartphones into an HDMI monitor
andrgl reacted to Frank Glencairn for a topic
Well, actually that video grabber you mentioned in your link, was the thing that started the whole idea for us. We did our first tests, the videos, app prototyping andwhatnot with it. Though LukiLink will be manufactured by the same company (Hint: it's not Pearl, they just resell it), we have our own custom made board inside (without going to deep into this here, but it has a lot to do with latency/lag, and some other parameters, which don't really mater for a video grabber, but for the main usees our product), and we also want to implement some features in the future, that would not be possible otherwise, like LUT upload to the device, an SDI option and some other stuff, which I can not talk about here, because of NDA. Also - if you look at the Kickstarter site - we have a female USB output connector implemented for us, not the fixed cable of the grabber. We made sure that both female connectors withstand the rough handling on set, and don't break as easy as the one of the video grabber (don't ask me how I know). That also makes a custom made housing necessary. Also we developed our own apps that will provide a ton of functions like peaking, waveform, markers etc. - also that grabber does only work with Android and not iOS.1 point -
I completely understand this because I think President Trump is an African American Woman because I choose to use a different definition of the words African and Woman. What in the hell are you talking about, Ed? You don't get to choose the definition of words to suit your narrative. I know it's a political tactic to do so, but this isn't a political forum. You know... I also was trying to stay out of this conversation but after reading this nugget, I had to have my one and only reply... Words have meaning and power. People can choose to use words incorrectly, but that would make that person ignorant and subsequently make their opinion moot. Or it's deliberate for a very specific political motive. Neither reason is acceptable. A major issue in our society is the misuse of words and the miscommunication of intent. If you're unsure of the proper definition of a word, look it up. Your argument may become clearer and your points not so divisive. Or maybe you know exactly what these words mean and this aww shucks routine is the character you play? Trump is a lot of things, but a white nationalist is not one of them. It's a moronic argument used as a scare tactic to like minded people that don't think for themselves. There are plenty of valid arguments to be made for President Trump or against President Trump, but that ad hoc attack just keeps the narrative and debate in the whacko realms of the Far Left and Far Right and I would rather hear discussions and points made by the rational center, where most humans reside.1 point

...and much larger buffer (D750 about 10 images, D850 51 images 14b)...and focusing in complete darkness like the D5 (D750 focuses quite well in low light, but yet, miles away from D5/D500)...and 45 MP instead of 24 MP....and NO low pass filter --> a bunch more sharpness... and for sure much more weather sealed than the D750.. illuminated buttons (very useful)....and, and, and... I own the D750 and I like it - but as it seems at the moment, the D850 is a "one for all" and will beat the honorable D750 in many ways --> sports, HQ commercial photography, landscape, wildlife, AF in the darkness (interesting for journalists) etc. The capability of storing different RAW formats (large, medium, small) makes it even more interesting, because more flexible for shooters to store just the amount of data needed...1 point

My two favorite movies are documentaries (which you can view the full films for free online!!): 1) "Line of Sight". As it gives a very small insight into the world of being a bike messenger (which I live and breath myself! It is what I do in between my freelance jobs as a sound recordist on set), that otherwise the normal average person just can not do. https://www.pinkbike.com/video/299661/ 2) "Fat Head". Because it exposes what nonsense the food pyramid is. And that eating fat is not as evil as everyone seems to think it is. (personally I've been living a Low Card High Fat diet since 2011! And will carry on so for the rest of my life).1 point

Max bitrates and does the NX1 hack actually reduce macro blocking?
Santiago de la Rosa reacted to SMGJohn for a topic
I remember that someone posted a post here showing the effects high bitrate had on macro blocking, personally I never experienced macro blocking anymore with 140mbps bitrate as its the most stable one with autofocus and everything on, if you turn off autofocus and sound you can push it to stupid levels like 220mbps is the highest I ever got before it gets unstable. It speaks for itself, you probably remember the macro blocking issue before Samsung increased the bitrate through firmware update, I still got old footage with horrendous macro blocking before the first firmware rolled out. I shot a lot of 140mbps bitrate video on Crete when I was there last year, did not notice any macroblocking that would cause issues for me and this is with in-camera picture profiles, the last one I pushed saturation to 10 just to see how much the codec could handle, seem to have handled the colours just fine, skin colour is a disaster though when you start experimenting with the picture profiles.
