  2. They are really on the ball. I feel the respected as well and they have really supported EOSHD with this roll-out of the firmware. I feel every penny of the investment I made in the GH5 has been rewarded with this update, and the ALL-I codec is stunning. This is a Hybrid Log Gamma / TV thing, you are best off using H264 for everything else especially the 400Mbit ALL-I. Due to the high efficiency of H.265 it only needs half the bitrate of H.264 for the same quality so it is good for saving space, but it doesn't quite have the filmic motion and fine grain of the ALL-I H.264.

Detox the body with herbs and supplements. Meditate and exercise every day. This will result in learning anything faster. Actually creating content is the most valuable tool for learning photography and filmmaking. That's why many famous content creators advise against film school. Their suggestion is get out and shoot- a lot!

  4. Just heard a cool thing on radiolab - asked, are our personalities fixed at birth? The scientist replied, "half-fixed." So for me this means we can learn and constantly improve our skills. And whatever natural talent anyone has for photography or cinematography, or lack there of, it can be learned. 10,000 hours of practice and watching and learning. So forums like this are really good.

  5. Yes it is possible to use 4:3 as a normal recording mode and crop to whatever aspect ratio you like, such as 16x9 It is only just dawning on me for some reason, that they added a 5K video mode, haha. Just like that! Bang, first 5K mirrorless camera.

  7. @jcs https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3902221/ https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2642860/ Just 2 papers which question the wisdom of blindly applying animal models to a human context. UG stuff. Totally irrelevant to these fora but you did ask. The fact that you "studied" something is irrelevant. I have studied the spec sheet of a Red epic. Does that make me an "expert" in the art of cinematography? On your logic, yes. I wish! Your approach to the scientific method is flawed. A good scientist presents evidence FOR his or her proposition. They do not demand that someone produces evidence to the contrary. (Unicorns exist. If you don't accept that prove that they don't. Reductio ad absurdum). And evidence in this respect isn't a collection of random copy'n'paste from a variety of sources (rarely peer reviewed). You mention refraining from alcohol. Generally good advice (as witnessed elsewhere by Kaylee's story). But remember http://www.tate.org.uk/context-comment/articles/drink-fuelled-nations-art Always a counter-example! But this is impinging on my day job and it's dull. I apologise for treating your posts like one of my student essays! On a not totally unrelated note - you don't by any chance have direct experience of comparing high ISO footage on the C200 compared to your C300ii do you? (I think you have the latter?) I'd be interested to learn more about that as I'm thinking of a C200. Tim

  8. The year was 1999. Under Sicilian mob threats because of the plot -- a true story to be told... a DAT tape lost. Hundreds of thousands lost. The major credit card had about 300 bucks of remaining limit. Flights to pay. Weeks of shooting to repeat for direct sound and dialogue. Script re-written with Marco Tullio Giordana on the purpose in order to fit the Portuguese actress (Ana Moreira) casted for the lead female character had to be reduced. And the character had to be cut off. The actress had no role anymore for her contribution and ours as co-producer despite the hard work and participation in the movie as such, after never ending hours of working time. I went to hospital with heart arrhythmia (my 1st experience with Inderal) following two nights and days with absolute no rest for the weary. In the end, the movie is still considered one of the major hits of recent Italian cinema (won five awards in Venice BTW, nominated for the Golden Globes, USA and so on) and helped to launch both Marco Tullio and Lo Cascio careers in their next collaboration together La Meglio Gioventù / The Best of Youth, an epic of 2003 all Italians easily recognise as the History of the second half of their XX century. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0238891/

  10. Wow, just wow... Respect for Panasonic just went up big time. Canon who? This is amazing, Panasonic have gone above and beyond my wildest expectations with this update. My decision to invest in the Panasonic system now justified. Canon never did anything like this for us. I am still waiting to see what EVA1 brings, but if the lowlight performance is there, I can see it making a nice addition to my tool kit. If not, another GH5 will be in the cards. In any case, this is massive. The competition is surely looking stupid right now. Hey Sony, Canon, Nikon etc... this is how you earn customers business and repeat business.

  11. That's too bad... for them. Seriously. I've found, through experience, that clients that lowball like that are also the biggest headaches. They likely would have piled on extra requests, wanted infinite revisions to your edits, etc. that would use up more of your time. If they can't come up with 650 for three days of work, they aren't valuing their own business very highly. I have no doubt they will find someone cheaper, but the end product will look exactly like what they paid for it. In other words, don't feel bad and DON'T feel like you should ask for less for you talents!

  13. To be brutally honest....Most camera reviewers and early adopters do a PISS poor job of filming good subject matter and showing off the strengths of the camera being evaluated. They WASTE so much time blabbing about tech specs and and showing themselves on screen TALKING about features of the camera VS shooting something and SHOWING the features. No one wants to watch 3 minutes of a talking head and 1 minute of sample clips. Take for instance the C100...folks swear its merely a documentary camera. Below are some test shots I took for a web series I'm working on with the C100MK2. Clog with light grade upscaled to 4k. I'm betting the C200 looks even better.

  14. I offered that advice recently on a forum thread and the OP rejected it. No problem. However, that does show that each of us has our own way of doing things, especially with creative stuff.

  16. I'd like to add to the great points everyone's made: I've learned a ton from forums and youtube videos, (and it's quite a privilege for us to live in a world where all this info is available so readily) BUT, none of that knowledge has been a replacement for the MISTAKES I've made and what I've learned from them. Working through the issues that arise on set even on one day's shoot is worth 100 hours of online information, I'd say. This includes dealing with technical problems, working around location limitations, dealing with difficult talent or coworkers, leadership qualities, etc. Also, and I have no reason for this other than personal experience and going with my gut, I've found that taking some time to do other creative things like playing guitar actually help tremendously with my main craft.

  17. In case of misunderstanding, there was no intended implication that you are divided; only pointing out that it's hard to find non-dividing sources of information online. Do you know of a non-dividing source regarding the google memo case? In a sense, the google memo case might also be a kind of whistleblower case, if in fact, google is breaking the law. As I stated at the top of this thread, he put google at risk for the legal statements. I didn't get the sense that what he wrote was crazy at all: did you read it (the full version)? The opposite: written like an engineer trying to solve a problem, as seen from his point of view, with no malice intended. It appears most of the response energy from MSM regarding what he wrote is emotional, whereas what he wrote was very logical, void of emotion (he might be like many engineers: not using his emotional intelligence as a result of years of engineering and/or biology).

  18. Absolutely. Hard work is the secret sauce. I personally believe that all humans are "creative". Its just in our nature. Some of us have been able to tap into that and have worked hard at making that their career. "Career" is man made. The 9-5 "job" is a recent innovation. Man kind has been creative and scrappy their entire existence to survive and to entertain. What a fascinating species we are

  20. I love this camera. I even sold my X-T2 to buy it. And honestly, I much prefer using it for video over the X-T2 (mostly because of no need to switch drive mode). And that was despite not having a tilt screen or 4K. Well, soon it will be one less drawback. http://www.fujirumors.com/major-fujifilm-x-pro2-kaizen-firmware-update-will-add-4k-video/ To bad Ive sold it PS. Speaking of Fuji listening to polls on rumor sites, "..In fact, it was your feedback and negative poll results, that killed the monochrome X-Pro1.." What a big f...ng shame. I would have soooo bought that. I loved my Leica M Monochrome but couldn't justify it when I also shoot film. Something more fuji priced would have been sweet.

  21. The announcement of the firmware update seems a relevant moment (incidentally my birthday), to give a little update on the GH5 project I alluded to here and on Bmcuser. I had expected in July that it would be ready to deliver before the end of August, but alas it continues to lay waste to timelines. Bringing it into reality has proven exceptionally complicated and challenging, 7 months in. I will release as soon as possible, which may be awhile yet. I suspect it will be of enormous value to anyone interested in the GH5. More soon

  22. Are there any plans to drip some of these features down to the cheaper cameras like the G80/G85? I'd love that improved autofocus at least... The extra codecs would be very nice too but I assume they don't want to cannibalize their higher end market by making the cheaper ones too good.

  23. FYI for AVID users: Andrew's test GH5 files with firmware 2 seem to link correctly into Avid 8.9.1 with no addition plugin required, FYI. This is because Avid now includes 'native' reading of some h264 in this new version (ie. it doesn't use Quicktime). (There is apparently a problem with 'frame count' with GH5 files inside Avid 8.9.1, according to this post on the official forums, but I haven't noticed this.)

  24. This is just Panasonic proving to me, yet again, that I made the RIGHT decision when purchasing the GH5 over the A7S II. I will probably never use most of the new features (I am going to have to get an HDR TV now, thanks Panasonic), but it's amazing to know that they're there if I need them. This is a camera that I think I'll grow into, instead of growing out of. I love that Panasonic is listening to its customers and giving them features that the camera didn't ship with. I do wonder WHY the ALL-I codecs look more filmic. There was always something so beautiful about the videos from my GH2. So beautiful, in fact, that I didn't even bother upgrading to the GH3 or GH4. I can't say what it is that makes the images from the GH2 look the way they do, but I haven't seen it in any other camera. Maybe it was the noise, always bouncing around on the screen, like the Digital Bolex. The GH2 was a fantastic camera and I'm really looking forward to seeing what ALL-I looks like on the GH5 at 4K.

  25. I love this camera. I've pretty much forgotten about my FS7. The GH5 is much lower profile, more stealthy, it is weather sealed, the user menu is great, the crop factor is great for shooting wildlife, the Custom settings make switching between UHD 60p and HD 180p instantaneous, something thats a pain on the FS7, even with the S&Q button. And with a Ninja you get 4:2:2 10 bit at 60p. Nice.

  29. Can one now use the Open Gate feature to record a 4:3 image in 1:1 PAR? (useful for vertical recording a subject against chroma key without wasting left and right space and using all available resolution) And does this come in 10 bit 4:2:2 400Mbps ALL-I?

  31. There's always room for premium paid content, I like Sean Reid of Reidreviews for instance even though his entire site is behind a paywall! I don't mind it, I'm not a communist. If it wasn't for the EOSHD shooter's guides I wouldn't be able to do this site. The thing with Cinema5D, it just seems it is a ploy to boost their profile as filmmakers whilst raking in the ad dollars, otherwise the content would be entirely different, and a damn sight more useful! In fact I am overall disappointed with 90% of what is out there at the moment, far too much click bait with even DPReview now in on it too. I am beginning to turn off. Philip Bloom when he was blogging - instant inspiration and I wanted to grab the camera. Click bait - zero inspiration, I feel treated like cattle. Z-Reviews on YouTube is great for headphone reviews by the way... THAT is the kind of colourful, engaging outspoken personality you need to get people enthusiastic about a good product. I have spent thousands on headphones because of this guy!! And enjoyed every moment of it!! Good products deserve good coverage.

  32. Hmm...It's hard to give knowledge "back for free" nowadays. Simply just look at many reputable and very solid reviewers, when sharing their experience and tests for free: they get insulted and very often offended by fanboys of other brands, they get accused of beeing paid by manufacturers, etc....A bunch of dumb and not educated, bored idiots maraude through the web trying to destruct other peoples work and opinion. Just for their destructive "fun"... I admire people who still share their knowledge and experiences for free, but I can completely understand the guys who give up teaching / educating others for free (or for a small affiliate amount). For what? For getting offended and insulted by a bunch of frustrated idiots? Just look at many YT or other comments, respect for other peoples work is completely gone, it's wild west now... Sharing knowledge for free is crucial for the devlepment of an industry and human beeings. But beeing respectful - even if you don't agree with author's opinion - too...

  33. JCS, why do you think this health advice is relevant for a camera forum? It's getting hard for threads about creativity and gear to be waylaid like this almost every time with your new age philosophies. Please let's try and stay on topic.
    1 point
  34. Absolutely right about the "forum for friends"! I used the term "demand" as in "require" not in any aggressive or confrontational manner. Apologies if that didn't come across. Thank you for the video link - it's on topic insofar as it's about learning! But, granted, tenuous at best. I know the advice given here is frequently "rent before you buy" but it's not always that easy so engaging with users is possibly the next best thing. Tim

  35. Yeah no worries, everyone has their own methods for learning. I guess we're of the same philosophy to skip film school and get out and shoot: AKIRA KUROSAWA JOHN WATERS MIRANDA JULY QUENTIN TARANTINO STANLEY KUBRICK TERRY GILLIAM http://flavorwire.com/412974/famous-directors-who-never-went-to-film-school And Robert Rodriguez when he shot El Mariachi. Getting one is not really any new development. I was one of the launchday pre-orders, I can really appreciate what it's about. Just had a bit of hassle with the logistics of it all, but everything should be set now. Pretty mean alternative to the Oly beast that is the 7-14mm f/2.8 PRO (not small, nimble & light, no filter thread) if you ask me. And you're right of course, for me the f/2 end of the spectrum makes it both useful in lower light situations and giving you interesting depth of field for the angle with fairly close subjects in focus. Of course... on a sunny day, you gotta need to add filters or it's bye bye aperture.

  40. Indeed. That's my point exactly. If you're happy with, why to move along? : ) I have to be pretty sincere on here. I normally resist to trade in my tools for the newest promise to keep up the vibe. To me the secret is always on combos. That's just my weak point :-D Speaking of devil, 5D2 only had two flaws: DSLR form factor (I did the move to the GH series to begin with the GH1 and never looked back in any way other than as when ML RAW popped up) and aliasing/moiré. The latter one much prone to overcome with the proper handy skillful workarounds. We did a feature film with (even before ML hack) becoming a web series too later, at least:

  41. The problem with all online publication is the business model. Free website must rely on some sort of advertising and affiliates link to pay the bills (web hosting, IT, writers, etc.). I don't know much about Cinema5D but if you don't pay a dime to visit the website what do you expect?

  47. I agree with you, it should have been in there from the beginning. But I forgot what we decided Canoning was exactly, besides making stuff that works as advertised. At least it isn't Sonying Maybe they wanted to clearly segment it to the X-T2. And now when the dust has settled they can add it without loosing the customers that already bought both. I think a 4K X-Pro2 from the beginning would also have stopped many from going the X-T2+X100f route.
