  1. The big flashy MB/a number that's plastered on cards and their packaging isn't what need to pay attention to. That number is just the peak transfer rate, what the card is capable of hitting for a few seconds under the right conditions. It's relevant to shooting bursts of photos, but not video. For video you need to look for the minimum sustained write speed. This is the speed that the card can write at continuously, without stopping or slowing down. This number needs to be at least a smidge higher than your camera's bitrates. Unfortunately, this spec isn't as sexy as the peak write speed, so nobody uses it for marketing, and it's usually not easy to find. This is where the various speed class ratings come in. Class 2 would do 2MB/s continuously, Class 6 would do 6MB/s, etc. That topped out at Class 10 I believe, then they switched to the U rating... U1 is supposed to be able to write at least 10MB/s continuously, and U3 30MB/s. Then the next system is the new V rating (for video). V60 does 60MB/s, V90 does 90MB/s.

  2. Oh I'm sure it looks amazing. When my 720p JVC dies or my 1080p Roku TV goes caput, I may get something like that.

  3. I have two HDR TVs, one Sony and the other LG Oled, both are epic. You end up rewatching movies you have already seen as they feel new again. I highly recommend that if you are in the market for a new TV, just spend a few $$$ more and go with something that supports HDR. In another two years the big push will be 8k. I know that now an 8k TV can be had for as little as $9k. Not cheap, but keep in mind that it was not long ago that such a TV would have been $130k... so it is progress.

  4. I certainly agree. Have come across more than a few myself. As someone said earlier, makes you question whether you even like doing this or not. I've had clients who have asked me to "match" or "requote" a hundred or two higher than some months-old newbies (I have coming to six years' experience in this field) who were quoting half my price. I don't need clients like that.

  5. Are you are up for a bit of experimentation to make something unique ? Of course you are! Open two browser windows, both with YouTube on In the first one, put something like this, which is a royalty free suspense type piece And then in the other one, put something like this. If you move the play position of the second one round then you can create some sinister and interesting stuff. When you're happy with two pieces that you find then you can then just do that properly in your NLE by sliding the tracks around to create your own composite. More fun, more creative, more exclusive and generally cheaper as 'Royalty Free' stuff generally does still have an initial licensing charge.

  6. We have definitely had a few on here. There have been three or four 'users' who popped up and offered some seemingly helpful yet clearly cribbed from a script information midway through a thread. They had been triggered by a camera model or term by the looks of it. So, for example, someone might say "Has anyone used the AF-C mode on a Fuji X-T2?" and there would be a reply along the lines of "In continuous-servo AF (AF-C), the camera continues to adjust focus to compensate for changes in the distance to the subject while the shutter-release button is pressed halfway. This makes it a good choice for subjects that are in motion." And there would usually be a link for 'further reading' about it. So the replies looked contextually correct but the information in them was always set out in this definition style. A few of them looked like they were triggered by a term from a user guide and then the section of the user guide was posted. One interesting thing is that we seem to have not been invaded by the 'love and spirit guide guru' offerings that we used to get a lot of and I actually think they were triggered by the amount of discussion of the Black Magic cameras as the spambot often referenced black magic banishment in its offerings. Its definitely indicative of the decline in the discussion of the BM cameras for me. Ironically, @jonpais I wonder if what you listed in the pinned thread regarding guidelines for posting on Al Jazeera might make this issue more prevalent over there as having a defined set of rules would make these bots more easily shaped to fit in with what a 'real' poster looks like? With regard to anonymity, it probably can make people more suspicious if you post under a pseudonym and without a real profile picture so I should probably remedy that myself and change my own profile name and picture to actually be me. LG V30 HDR Camera

I was surprised to learn that the LG V30 is shipping with what appears to be an industry first, a 10 bit HDR Camera with a true log profile. They even go as far as to add in phone color grading. Combine this with the best audio of any phone, including auto capture, and I think it safe to say that the LG V30 is a content creator's dream phone. http://www.phonescoop.com/articles/article.php?a=19500

  8. I wanted to see which Picture Profile on my G7 give the best skin tones, as well as the general differences of each one. All profiles are set to -5 Contrast, -5 Sharpness, -5 NR, -1 Saturation (except Vivid which is -2). The only grading is a contrast curve (I also added grain). Lens: Canon FD 28mm 2.8 w/ Focal Reducer (shot wide open). Shot in 4K, 500iso, 3200k color temp. CinelikeD seems to yield the flattest image and maybe the most dynamic range, and it's the profile I've used the most for that reason, until now. I kinda think CinelikeV might have better skin tones. Aside from Vivid and Monochrome, most of the others barely look any different from each other. All of this is subjective of course, but I thought other G7 uses might be interested.

    LG V30 HDR Camera

It's Incorrect. 5. HDR recording and playback "... The camera now captures the 1.07 billion colors that the HDR-10 standard requires, and the V30's flexible OLED display with its deep blacks just got certified by Netflix for HDR streaming, joining the G6 and Xperia XZ Premium as the only two other phones that can stream movies and TV series from Netflix shot with this rich color format in their full bloom." The guy writing the article has taken the Netflix Standard for Broadcast and mixed it up with the Camera Recording capabilities of the V30. The LG V30 may be certified for HDR and Dolby Vision (for its Screen and Headphone Output), but that is solely for the Screen (and audio output via the headphone out) and Not for is recording capabilities. I am guessing that's limited to 8-bit 4-2-0. And the Log is not a true log.

  14. Please Andrew, if you can talk to panasonic people, ask for an "anamorphic Ibis mode" (where there is no roll axis movement of the sensor) because it is so bad for the vertical alignement of the scopes.

    Insta360 One

I agree and the potential is huge and I belive most people have not yet realized the impact that will have in a few years.... having a full sphere stabilized where you can later on reframe and do camera movement in post especially as b cam it is huge. Currently the end quality is way too crappy but with 8k a better sensor and lens and it will become super usefull. I'm curious to see the gopro fusion if it is better althroug I'm not expectin miracle at this time.

  16. I was always curious how that 9mm body cap lens would fare on the Micro... how do you like it? I have seen a few videos with it on the Pocket and it seemed better than expected.

  20. Dolby Vision Sets are what you want, HDR 10+ is a new competitor. Both these sets are MUCH brighter than regular HDR (HDR 10) sets. I'm excited for HDR, but it adds a huge complication to workflow.

  22. It has a fixed aperture at F4. You can dream that it goes to F16 but they forgot to write it anywhere because is not that important;-) Action camera are used also in lowlight and combined with the light needed for hfr a 2.8 lens would be quite usefull. I do a lot of low light sports so for me 2.8 would have been better. DJI manages to put a 24mm 2.8-11 lens on a 1' sensor in a tiny package so Sony should have done it too...

  24. Panasonic GH5 and G7. I replaced GH4 and G6 (both great cameras!) and had BlackMagic Pocket and Micro, some Canon etc... but the Lumix are the camera I like most. I recently used the RED Scarlet W, amazing camera, but I'm more then happy with the easy GH5 with V-LogL

  26. Thanks @PannySVHS we've been posting videos on Instagram mostly. There are 6 up so far with 3 more to come in the next few days, one min from each city we are in. On Instagram his name is (at)md_woods_ if you'd like to check them out. Any video posted recently on that page I filmed with the same GH5 setup.

Tokina Angenieux 28-70mm with 5D3 ML Raw...
    1 point
  29. You'd have to test them side by side but I'd be very surprised if there was a justification for anywhere near that multiplier. Tokina's own cine version of it didn't exist at the time the Sony was released (2011) so it and the Duclos where the only way to get it in that format. You'd have to decide which one better suited what you are doing as the Sony weighs twice as much and has a 105mm filter thread versus 82mm on the Tokina, either or both of which may be a factor for you.

  30. Cool! Really enjoyed the blog post too. My Sony F3 finally sold for far too little, but luckily that was still double what I needed to buy a used BMPCC with zoom and 6 batteries from ebay, augmenting the purchase with a 128GB Extreme Pro SD card. Now just to receive it sometime this week and start the learning curve. Can't wait to start showing some projects here!

  31. Thanks! I directed this but didn't have much say in the edit and post. If I were fully involved in that process I would have done either just 16:9 or 2.35:1. Also, the color grade...not a huge fan. Would have made the intro shots more moody and dark. Just my thoughts. Wish I had more involvement, but dealing with the artist, label, and producer wasn't easy and they kinda took over the project after the shoot day. I may put together a "directors cut" and post that on Vimeo with the changes I mentioned.

  32. Very impressive. I really love how you push these cameras toward cinema. Beautiful work. Sucks to hear about the water damage though.

  33. I get it. Either you adapt to it or not. My DP1 is just as fast as any other camera and actually faster than most due to the excellent manual focus. 1-2 sec from wakeup to fire, max. The LCD doesn't matter to me. My film cameras dont have LCDs and some doesn't even have viewfinders, but I don't let that stop me Its never going to suite everyone. The point of my comment was simply that you shouldn't buy a modern Sigma. Because it doesn't seem to be for you anyway

  35. @BTM_Pix Just expecting to see some 4k low light footage and then hold it in my hands and do some test shots. Last week I've buyed a Zeiss Otus 28mm 1.4...with Nikon F - now I only wait for the proof of the D850 qualities. BTW: I shot the Zeiss with a cheap K&F Nikon2NX adapter on the NX 1 some days ago. Colors, contrast and detail are mindblowing - from edge to edge...Can hardly wait to see this exceptional lens on a D850...

  37. Yes, Andrew, it is impressive! I´ve been a fan of the potential of the Panny codec/color from G6 on. It´s been giving me exiting possiblities for color work. This weeked I shot my short on a GH5. I completely trusted that pixel perfect HD and its least color mode: the glourious 8bit 420 REC709 Natural profile with contrast at 0. This is a screenshot, quickly graded. Hope to get it through the edit and music and postprod quickly. If 8bit rec is already of such beauty, the other modes will be massive. By the way, I shot it 8bit and rec, because of older hard- and software infrastructure available at the moment:) Nothing more uncomfortable than having footage laying around unedited EDIT: We know about the advantages of contrast 0 in rec709 on the new Lumix cameras, sharpness and noise at -5 of course:)

  38. I see Luca (NX1 speed booster designer!) has been playing with my footage Nice grade, even from the Rec.709 standard profile you can see the dynamic range For those who haven't downloaded the files yet, check it out especially the AF test shots. Thanks for the edit and grade Luca

  39. The DP1 is great for street photography. I dont need speed for that as much as I need focus. They are all slow, no need to buy another one. Its just like when shooting film, a Leica T or any other fundamentally different type of camera. You need to "get it". Not try to force the camera into working like a modern DSLR. You need to adapt to it

    GH5 so far

I've had my GH5 for about 3 months now and I'm loving the files i get from it, both standard profile and V-LOG L. When it's not working all rigged up (see picture at the bottom) it always stays in my messenger bag with just one lens, the Oly 25/1.2 which has become my all time favorite lens. Anyhooow, here's some random (as usual) shorts from every day life. All rigged up. This setup has proven itself to be a very convenient run&gun solution!
