The new Sony RX10 IV can shoot 24p RAW stills

Film writing prompts

I am finding this incredibly useful at the moment: https://www.reddit.com/r/nosleep/ https://www.reddit.com/r/WritingPrompts/ There's some real amateur talent on these subs, and occasionally an idea surfaces that sparks off all kinds of brilliant writing. I suggest if you are feeling creative and want to write film ideas, to join in. I am writing one at the moment, which is partly inspired by Black Mirror: San Junipero. I found the build up in that episode a bit too cliched, but it turns into an absolutely killer idea by the end. Watch it. Very very moving! --- Here's my (rather long) film writing prompt if anyone wants to pick up on it... "DREAMS WE DON'T REMEMBER" A technology arrives which records our dreams and allows us to interact with our deepest unconscious characters and situations. Jewel, a student, joins a research company’s paid trial. It is disguised in the ads as a drugs trial but turns out to be run by the corporation behind the dream-recording technology. Jewel is invited to test a new version of the technology and after a particularly disturbing dream we don’t know the contents of and Jewel can’t remember, she is forced to reenact it vividly using a new experimental brain-machine interface which accidentally sends her into a coma. In the problematic dream Jewel is being turned from a human into a machine by a primitive 1970's computer engineer who stabs a screwdriver and soldering iron around in her open chest torn apart, her skeleton rearranged into a box-like shape to accommodate a rack of circuit boards and wires. Now inside the life-threatening coma, Jewel comes to believe she’s truly a computer. She feels the currents running through various wires inside her, her vision feels digital, like a flickering virtual reality headset and when she’s touched by the user, she feels their hands on her, pressing physical buttons and keys, to give her instructions on how to behave. She starts to develop an emotional and physical attachment with her 'owner', the man who is using her as his computer. She wakes from her coma and unbeknown to the doctors helping her, the corporation has been recording her hallucinations in the coma - all the disturbing details of it. They use the data to reconstruct a virtual version of Jewel in the form of a feminine machine, a cyberpunk replicant, to be used to satisfy the sexual urges of their own computer scientists behind closed doors. After weeks of abuse the replicant escapes into the real world and tracks down Jewel’s home where she’s recovering in the company of her close family and boyfriend. In front of her family, the replicant tells Jewel everything that happened in the coma and what the company has done to create the ‘virtual’ Jewel. The details of her deepest unconscious thoughts and upsettingly dark hallucinations create serious problems with her family and boyfriend, and it appears for most of the coma she’s fantasising about having passionate sex with her boyfriend's boss. Jewel is embarrassed and distraught, eventually alone and shunned by her family and boyfriend. With suicidal thoughts one evening, she steals the dream-recording machine from a research lab and tries to influence her dreams to repent for the sins in her unconscious. She fails to have a more positive dream and feels disgusted when watching back the recording, whilst immersed in the futuristic VR brain-machine interface, a tear falls cinematically down her cheek, just as the replicant Jewel puts her hand on her shoulder in a gesture of comfort... Interesting: Sony just announced the new RX10 IV bridge camera (fixed lens F2.4-4.0), capable to shoot high bursts - 24fps per second with a buffer of 249 images, even in RAW. That means 10 seconds of RAW video. Great!2 points

Proselytism is & always has been a big part of most religions, even more so in Christianity that has it in the gospel. And for many centuries if you didn't convert you most probably would end up dead, so quite the pressure I would say . And here is one modern version of a proselytism park: http://www.holylandexperience.com/ But on the second point I agree, God is yet another attraction point for wandering souls. The problem is that there is an organized path towards just that point. So if you are proselytized from young age, the likelihood of finding Christ later in your life is far greater than chance. Whether that is good or bad, is another discussion. Spot on. Initially I just went with trolling & drugs, but your psychoanalysis offers a deeper understanding why he might have done those things in the first place.2 points -
DaVinci Resolve 14 released!
TheRenaissanceMan and one other reacted to Don Kotlos for a topic
I recently made that move, but still haven't settled on just one. I do most of my edits on FCPX and move to Resolve only for fancy coloring. FCPX offers great editing experience if you own a mac. Easy, fast & fluid. Thats it. Color grading is a joke unless you spend another $100 on plugins. Resolve shines in color grading, and it is free if the limitations don't affect you. If you mostly do editing and only occasionally grade, then FCPX is a good solution. Even more so if you edit on a macbook pro and you don't have an eGPU. On the other hand if you want to do some serious color grading then Resolve, no question about it. I would say start with the free version of Resolve and stick with it for few weeks. Once you are familiar with it, try the trial version of FCPX and you will be at a good place to decide what fits your needs before you spend your dimes.2 points -

I covered the European Championships in horse racing, jumping, dressage, etc. A full week. Among the pro shooters there where 1 using mirrorless. Me. All others had Canon. I walked around the whole arena and spotted maybe 5 Nikon. The rest was Canon. 0 Sony. 0 Panasonic. Among the friends and family of the riders, their coaches, etc there where some others. 1 Olympus, 3-4 Panasonic. And surprisingly at least 5 DJI Osimo or what ever its called.. And I understand them 100%. My Fuji X-Pro2 and X-T20 worked perfectly to capture the action. But that is because I know where the horses will be. Where they will turn, jump and so on. But these guys and gals (lots of women pro photographers among horses) might have to capture a soccer game tomorrow. And then the tracking of my Fuji wouldn't cut it. I worked covering the veterinarians and have not need for fast action.2 points -

Samsung keeps hiring old Japanese engineers, designers and other talented people who are "honourably" fired from Japanese Corporations because the new generation must replace the old. And this is the result, Samsung is destroying Japanese Corporations, Sony fired a lot of elderly extremely talented people and Korean Corporations fished them in. Having tried several cameras it seems that Samsung NX1 and NX500 trades high ISO performance for superior extremely high colour reproduction. So while having very bad ISO performance in general with huge drops when reaching 800 ISO and beyond, the colour reproduction at lower ISO is superior to most cameras I have tested so far, even the Sony big megapixel beasts cannot seem to keep up. The Sammy's do what other CMOS bayer sensors struggle with the most, capturing accurate autumn colours. Even Sigma SD Quattro with Foveon censor seem to struggle very hard to keep up with Sammy censor.2 points -
I'm so frustrated with Panasonic that they didn't choose to use a locking MFT mount!! Or at least a sub-PL mount like Kinefinity does. http://ironfilm.co.nz/what-if-kinefinitys-kinemount-became-a-universal-cinema-mount/ Exactly, and you could still beef up the MFT mount while keeping it MFT! Does it have a bigger buffer than the RX100 V? Seems unlikely to me as the buffer memory is part of the sensor, and they have the exact same sensor. I am actually surprised Sony bothered with this model... They should put it on a 2 year cycle with bigger differences between models. If the RX100 V style AF dramatically speeds up the telephoto end of that lens it will be a miracle as well1 point -

Makes sense for those who go to Apple church. Myself... now, I just don't share the same mentality and philosophy. Like, Windows isn't all that great from an OS perspective. But from the perspective of possibilities it's just not something I'm willing to give up on, there's just more I can do with the platform than I would with a Mac. Smartphones all the same. I like Android and you can set it up the way you see fit. Just, for a lot of people, that's too many options, it confuses them and scares 'em off. Instead they just want one ecosystem that's familiar, intuitive and pre-chewed spoonfed. I get that. But, that's just not me. I like choice. Speaking of which... where's your iPhone dualSIM options? Where's the microSD expandability? What if you want it equiped with a headphone port, etc. Atleast with Android there's many manufacturers and you can mix and match your wishes with devices that are availlable out there. And because of the competition out there prices have to be competitive too! Same for laptops and desktops... there's just much more choice and much fairer pricing going on. But you know. There's a certain crowd that's just better off with a whole Mac ecosystem. I have no need to be an Apple hater. Just go and use whatever works for you. That's the most important thing, not what another person does, but what you do and you ending up being happy with that.1 point

@kidzrevil Here is a quick screengrab from a 4.2.0 8bit 4K video done with a Zeiss Otus 28mm f/1 4 at F8.0. No color correction, no grading in post - only natural light (shot between golden and blue hour in Frankfurt - as I just wanted to capture the characteristics of the NX1 + Otus. The A6500 is also TOP NOTCH with the Otus on it when shooting architecture, etc. When shooting people, the A6500 is very "special" with the Otus on it, it will take some testing to get the right balance in regard to skin structure... I know, you are very picky with the look of your videos, especially with skin tones and structure. The A6500 looks great with 35mm 1.8 Nikon + Pro mist, when it comes to skin tonality and structure. You have to treat it very carefully, when it comes to WB! I wouldn't worry about 4.2.0|8bit.... *Please consider, that's my personal POV. I never shot IMAX cinema theater films and will never do it....I am simply a visual story teller...1 point

If they aren't carrying them from stock in a city like Manchester which, trust me, has a fairly big chunk of the UK's pro sports photographers in its environs, then there is some significance there. San Junipero was ultimately a very sweet story and the humanity and performances of the story really sold it. Plot is overrated, IMHO. But that's neither here nor there. No, we're not saying audio gear will last "forever". But relative to camera gear, audio gear will last you longer. (which means it can be a relatively better investment) Your audio recorders will last you longer than the typical camera life cycle, and microphones will last you at least as long as lenses and probably even longer. I guess my problem is the lack of balance here, how in one thread it is so wrong to spend $1K on audio gear yet on the next thread over it is all ok and normalized to spend $8K on camera gear. And I'm not denying it is a heck of deal! We are on the same page about that :-) I started out with a Tascam DR60D mk1 (well, had a Zoom H1 for a couple of years before then, but I'm not counting that). But I almost kinda get the impression from reading your post that you regard the DR60D and F4 as being on par with each other??? Which is pretty delusional thinking. Is like trying to tell me a T2i and a C300 are the same as each other because they're both 8bit video cameras. Errr.... what?? They're so much more than that! Yes, you can do great work with a DR60D just like we have seen in this forum you can also with a T2i when treated carefully and you work to its strengths (and avoid its weaknesses). But what happens when you move outside that limited range of uses where it shines? The T2i/DR60D will struggle and fail What I'm striving to see in this forum, is greater balance here between camera and sound. So sure if you're using a T2i, then a DR60D is going to be a good match for that. But if you're shooting with say a Panasonic GH5, with a nice set of lenses, gimbal, quality tripod, a decent lighting kit, etc then you shouldn't be using a DR60D at the core of your audio kit! I'd suggest something instead in the range of a DR70D to 633 instead. And where is this comparably priced Sound Devices? If you mean the MixPre6, it still lacks some of the functions/features of the F8/F4. Yet the MixPre6 costs more than the F4. And if you mean the MixPre3 (which costs the same as an F4): the one with only 3 ISO tracks, oh hell no The MixPre3 is a way way to crippled machine to seriously consider. (but then again if you really REALLY want that ultra compact size, and CERTAIN you'd never need more than 3 inputs, then maaaaaybe it might make sense. Maybe) Additionally I find the whole issue of analogue vs digital limiters to be way waaaaay overblown, yes it would be nice if the F4/F8 had anologue limiters too. But it is *not* the big deal most people seem to make it out to be. After all many professional recorders use some form of digital limiters, for instance the latest Zaxcom recorders, or the Sound Devices 633 on inputs 4 to 6. So rather than just saying blindly something like "all digital limiters are BAD, they're all the same, and are always a dealbreaker to me" you should take a more refined approach to it. (personally I'd rather have Zaxcom's Neverclip technology rather than Sound Device's analogue limiters) Also we should remember you should NOT be using your limiters hard on every shot. If you are, you're being an idiot, and should turn down your gain. Limiters are just there as a last gasp insurance safety measure. An even better safety approach (as using limiters of any sort, analogue or digital, is not ideal) is to run a safety track at the same time (which the MixPre6 can't do), to handle the extreme circumstances you might come across. Additionally if you need to think about the source before it even hits your recorder, if you're using wireless and it is distorting before it even reaches you then it doesn't matter what kind of limiters you have! Because of these reasons, and others, the whole analogue vs digital limiters thing is a little overblown. I watched Curtis Judd's video when it was first uploaded! :-) I'm a big fan of his channel. And I even went back and watched that YT video just now all over again just for the hell of it :-D But a few points: 1) he isn't a perfect God of knowledge. For instance it seems flawed to me to promote the Zoom H1 + lav as an option when the Tascam DR10 is so much superior for this niche/price range. 2) he is targeting his YT channel at the low end and/or videographer (not sound recordist). So his remarks need to be remembered within that context But overall he is pretty ok, & I agree with him more often than not. He is also a fan of the Zoom F4 too! (even though the F4 hadn't came out yet at the point of that video upload, he still talks positively about the F4 & recommends waiting for its release) For instance I say (if you've seen my blog post, or even just the comments here on this forum): No budget: Tascam DR60Dmk2 Ultra Low budget: Tascam DR70D Low budget / Semi Pro: Zoom F4 / F8 Entry point for pro grade: Sound Devices 633 And yeah, Curtis Judd pretty mentions the same ones and ranks them like that too.1 point

Maybe Sony is trying harder in the Chinese market because it is a brand new market (relatively speaking) so it will be easy to break in and smash the status quo that is in other countries? Well that is no surprise, they're two of the biggest retailers in the world! Kodak innovated to a limited extent, but they didn't push it, they wanted to protect their cash cow: film. Just like Canon, who is innovating to a small extent, but mostly is trying to protect their products from themselves (vs protecting against competitors!).1 point -

EthanAlexander reacted to jcs for a topic
It's totally OK that you disagree! I used to be very competitive at everything: sports (played them all in high school and college), racing cars, competing in software and business, winning lawsuits, winning arguments, however in the end it wasn't satisfying. Winning means someone else is losing, which creates resentment, and a net increase in suffering. This is especially true in personal relationships: we don't want to alienate our friends, families, or partners. In business, especially with the responsibility of a leadership position, it is especially tricky to get points across while being aware of each person's ego. Even if everyone ultimately realizes you are right, if they resent you it makes it hard to lead without drama. Thus I learned it's really important to let everyone know you really care for them, want the best for them, it's not personal, and to keep the business and/or tech debates focused on the issues vs. letting it get personal. I don't want to "win on the internet". It was never my point to prove anyone wrong, rather I was trying to show what I believed to be true. Yet my methods ultimately made people think I was trying to prove them wrong, and thus came resentment. When I use the word 'ego' it's not simply arrogance, it's the thing in our consciousness that makes us appear separate from each other and nature. The only way I've found to not experience ego is through deep meditation and/or using DMT to turn off the individual-human-state reality filter: the ego. The ego is a truly clever thing, the ultimate deceiver sometimes, not good or bad, it helps us to survive, and when out of control causes great suffering for self and others.1 point -
Game of Egos
EthanAlexander reacted to jcs for a topic
I had read about, how as we approach the Big Realization (note I'm not saying the Truth), our ego's get more and more clever, creating even "better simulations" so we think we've finally solved it all, that we have arrived, that we are enlightened... Hurray! And then slowly we realize that once again, we've deceived ourselves, and we're not there yet, there's still more to learn. Once we recognize that pattern, we can stop telling other's we've finally solved it all, that we know the solution, that we know the truth, that we know the Right Way, that we know anything at all. Even what I'm writing right now it's that same pattern, so it's really impossible to get this point across in words. It's like they say, you can really only smile and nod, and recognize that we are all playing the ego game, and ultimately live kindly as humans and not try to project our individual beliefs on others. Maybe we'll talk about it, maybe we'll agree, maybe we won't. Math and science were developed as a tools to try to reach consensus, and these tools work well enough for us to create houses, cars, roads, bridges, microwave ovens, foods, medicines, etc. The concepts of the Rule of Law have helped us to live relatively peacefully in the latest civilization (not including wars which twisted the law in order to justify war). Once we get to the level below quantum physics nothing works anymore, so we don't really know what is going on at the deepest levels, and thus it's metaphysical. Perhaps there's a fundamental flaw in the ideas of math and physics, and it's blocking a better description of reality. There's really no point arguing about it when we realize how our egos create illusions which we then project on others. It's kinda funny how it all seems to work! And maybe everything I've written here is just another illusion! Buddha said keep questioning everything he said- it's just what he found to work for himself, and if you find a better way, follow that. Similar to the Scientific Method: keep updating the ideas as we learn more. What we all do seem to agree on with people who have empathy (again, psychopaths/sociopaths/narcissists probably don't have empathy), is to treat others as we'd want to be treated. Be kind, implement the Golden Rule. It seems the more we can do that, the more we can reduce suffering and be happier. It appears Jim Carrey has been preparing to play Terrance McKenna: http://www.mckennite.com/articles/carrey. From Jim: "The deeper you go into the psychedelic dimension, the bigger it gets. I've seen things no human being has ever seen before, and no other human being will ever see again. I retreated to nature and I took five grams of dried mushrooms in order to prepare for this role". “The real message of psychedelics, I think, is to reclaim experience and to trust yourself. Your perceptions are primary. Your feelings are correct. Everything must constellate out and make sense and parse with what you know. If you don’t start from that assumption then you are off center to begin with. And the psychedelics will dissolve the cultural programming that has potentially made you a mark and restore your authenticity.” I felt the same way for a while, then realized that what I was seeing and experiencing was not unique at all. And that the ego was once again playing the game. 5 grams of psilocybe cubensis (see Jim Carrey link) would be a sufficient dose of DMT to put most people over the threshold for 'ego death', a state of consciousness where the human filter, what defines a human as a human, a specific person, to melt away. That's when transcendental awareness or cosmic consciousness can be experienced. That's what Jim meant when he said "You don't exist, we are not important, it's not our planet" etc. However this is just the ego again, running a different awareness simulation. So that's not the end of the journey. Once we come to this realization, it's kind of an AHA moment and also a NOW WHAT? moment. How are we supposed to live? What should we do if the ego is always creating illusions? Hungry: eat, tired: sleep, curious: explore. Just be. Be a human. Be aware of attachment. Be kind. That does seem to be the simple answer. Again, I reached the same conclusion as the pioneering teachers before us, however I realize it too may be another illusion, and until something that seems to work better is understood, this feels right. Feels like truth, feels like true love. So it's kind of recursively amusing realizing that these concepts where we become aware of the illusions of the ego, and write about them, are further examples of the illusions of the ego. So we can listen to other people's views of reality and respect them, realizing their ego is creating a specialized version of reality for them. It may be similar to our reality, and it may not. And it makes no sense to argue about it! It seems kindness and the Golden Rule are fundamental principles we'd hope all would agree to, perhaps there is an even better way, I don't know. @Don Kotlos, @Jonesy Jones I saw patterns in what Jesus said that were so similar to what Buddha said, I figured maybe he studied Buddhism. Alan Watts also has great insite into what Jesus was really trying to say: that we are all children of God, not just him: Recently this was published: https://www.feelguide.com/2017/01/19/bbc-doc-proves-jesus-was-a-buddhist-monk-named-issa-who-spent-16-years-in-india-tibet/. The Dalai Lama wrote about about Christianity and Buddhism: http://www.wisdompubs.org/blog/201603/dalai-lama-reflects-faith-buddhism-and-christianity. I don't know if it matters if this is true or not, it does seem he said the same things as Buddha, and that some of it was changed for political and religious reasons. I'm not sure if it will ever be possible to know. The pattern is Christianity kept splitting into more and more sects, e.g Catholics to Lutherans, to Latter Day Saints, and especially the Mennonites (there was also splitting and fragmentation of Buddhism, and in recent history when it was studied collectively, some sects had gotten the main ideas completely backwards!). It seems the splits kept happening as they got farther away from what Jesus and Buddha really said. We can look at what Buddha said and later Jesus to perhaps get a better understanding of the original concepts before politics and religion fragmented and changed them.1 point -

I think the evolutional purpose of human belief in God is that it's comforting... this turns it into something absolutely terrifying and nihilistic. Do you think the more enlightened Jim Carrey gets it the more of a suicide risk he is? It's already happened in the life of another great comic actor, Robin Williams... very sad. I think Carrey's a superb talent, unique... not to everyone's taste, but a genuinely interesting human being. He could be really onto the truth... he could be ultra enlightened... but there's a coldness behind his eyes, a cold stark reality to it somehow. Or maybe he's just goofing around with it... Trolling the vacuous celebrity machine at the fashion show and an insular, materialistic reporter. Watch the recent video on his artwork though, and it does seem he's actually living his newfound enlightenment and taking inspiration from it. Fine line between genius and madness! Yup, I'd agree with that. Maybe in Jim Carrey's attempt to shrink his ego, he's peered into the void. In the end it should be up to the individual to believe in what he believes... the problem is religion is too often forced on the individual from a young age or from peep pressure.1 point -

I think there are many more harmful ways of thinking and of treating others. Of course, each to their own, but if more people thought like this, I can't help but imagine a nicer, friendlier world than the one we live in now. Sure the universe doesn't care about you personally, can it even care at all? What is the universe in this sense? Does it even matter? The original post, and the dodgy looks that woman gives the camera automatically puts Jim in a negative light, like he's a washed up lunatic. Good for him for not caring about a fashion week, and for not caring how he'll be portrayed, knowing full well that what he's talking about will go over the heads of the E Entertainment audience. More power to him. I do think you and Jim are saying similar things in different ways. I don't believe he's negating responsibility, instead trying to spread a message of oneness. We're all in this together, let's do our very best to keep this ride going. Instead of focusing on a fashion show, lets put our minds to better use. Of course, I'm only projecting my own thoughts as I do agree with a lot of what he's saying, but he says it in a wishy-washy way, which makes it easy for the real message to become lost.1 point

What about underexpose a tad bit?

Definitely will help. The key is to only expose by 1 stop, 2 stops and it gets noisy really fast. I have a GH5 coming in tomorrow, looking forward to testing 10 bit V-log! :-)1 point -
Tascam DR70D and Zoom H5

If you're a solo shooter on a tight budget, then probably half the features of the F4 you might not appreciate. But if you think in the future there is any chance you might specialise as a location sound recordist, then the Zoom F4 becomes a no brainer choice. I'm picking up six DPA microphones today! :-o This. Sadly this. People quibble over spending a few hundred for audio gear, yet will drop thousands in a blink of an eye on camera gear and lights. Makes me sad when I see sets where the entire audio equipment is costing the same as a single lens the camera department has :-/ Which often is true in the indie low budget world. Of course when I show up... we get the reverse problem! lol Where my entire audio kit is costing more than what the camera department has. Ha Fingers crossed for a Sound Devices 633 mk2! Or a new Sonosax or Zaxcom. Athough it would be better if they don't release anything.... don't think I could afford them this year! :-o I'll be sticking with my Zoom F4 for a while longer ;-) I agree, the Tascam DR60D (I also used to own a DR60D mk1) is not quite the build level of a Sound Devices (or even a Zoom F4), the build quality of the DR60D is still not a big practical concern. If that is all a person can afford, then don't let that factor into holding you back from buying one!1 point -

If that's the case, it's a misconception. Buying a speedbooster can be a rational decision. It allows you to buy better glass for less money. It allows you to capture comparatively more light without smaller DoF. Think about it. People reliably choose the image with shallower depth of field. Not necessarily because the bokeh is nice, but because the selective focus clearly signals that the shot has had an intention. If you follow this path, you never needed to care about set design, framing and all the other arts. Just buy a full frame camera and a 0.95 lens and blur everything!1 point

Although the RS isn't good at all, on the 6500, the 5-axis IBIS really tames it if you are not doing fast pans and walking.1 point
