And here's some totally absolute ridiculous answer to Lorian. Here's one of my first videos ever, i've started shooting with original a7s and all of examples here was shot in 1080p (or even 720p). All of that was shot very run-n-gun style, handheld, no lighting, with very basic knowledge of production: and something like that u never be able to shoot with gh5 (very dim conditions): There's more examples on my vimeo chanell include my very first video with a7s) Heres my advice: keep in mind that its you who create a look not a tools; otherwise ull end up being really ridiculous)3 points

When you're out on vacation in Egypt, making your own Brandon Li-esque travel video. You pay the extra $50 to go inside the Great Pyramid. Then right before you go in, the security guy says, "I'll take that." and puts your GH5 on the shelf until you get back out. Then you'll be reaching for the ol' iPhone Source: Happened. But it was a GF-1 and an iPod touch. And, if I'm being totally honest, I wasn't even making a video.3 points

I am pleased to announce that a year after the original, there is a major update to EOSHD Pro Color for Sony cameras. In addition to the new Pro Color, I am launching EOSHD Pro LOG as well. This takes all the advantages of Pro Color into an easy to grade C-LOG-like profile for your Sony camera. Pro LOG also comes with 25 EOSHD Film LUTs for an instant cinematic grade in post. Good cinematic examples using Sony A7S/A7R
Tim Sewell and one other reacted to Lorian for a topic
I'm not attacking him because his age, my answer was for his reply, the reply sounds like an old grumpy man just putting words without any sense, just for trying to be grumpy. I respect and work with a lot of people older than me, and no one ever answer me like this guy. I even asked the same question to some directors and DPs and helped me a lot with a nice and kind approach. Let's finish this here, please. Also, of course I can do some Youtube/Vimeo search, BUT if I'm asking here is because I want to know the opinion of the people around here. I'm looking for "curated" content by users of this forum, people who makes videos and have nice opinions. For me at least this is a nice and different approach to just "looking on youtube".2 points -
First Footage From EVA1
Juxx989 and one other reacted to Tony Manero for a topic
Hi All, let me introduce myself, I'm a professional photographer and film director, been working for the last 20 years and assisted before. I come from film, some of our video productions were shot indie, some with proper budget and some in super35 film. Few opinions about the eva-1 footage. I was expecting more, and if this is not the final product they should have waited a little bit more to show footage. In specifics, the DP either messed up the exposure (hard to believe as it's a panasonic infomercial) or the camera, when exposed to the right, has a bad response on shadows? Otherwise it would not make any sense having those almost clipped highlights. Unless that's the way this camera handle the DR on the highlights. I feel that all pros and movie lovers that in order, want a cool toy to experiment or a tool to be able to properly start into visual story telling, need a machine that handle well highlights and deliver a motion that resemble film. If documentary/occasional narrative is the goal, then the c300MKII, or the newly c200 (fantastic raw footage, great toy) it's the best choice. We can all agree that the reference camera for narrative is the Alexa (not a fan of Red even if dragon is better than the past). In fact I was having this conversation with my DP, and good friend, who helped Arri in the Alexa development from the d21. The conversation was about the fact that very few cameras produce a footage that resemble film, the makers seems not to get, or care, that highlights handling and motion should be the priority. This camera, in this first clip, seems to fail to give that organic (as they call it in all this forums) look necessary to recall 35 or super 16. The last little camera that was delivering that feel i played with was the little black magic pocket, it felt like going back to the sr3 years on 500 film. I was more impressed by the flexibility of the c200 raw footage. You can edit in mp4 and then proxy the raw footage. About the eva, they probably don't want to kill the LT market which is barely 6k more expensive, but a real pro level camera. Have a great weekend all, Best2 points -

ProRes is still lossy compression and you have to factor in what each app is doing in the process of transcoding in addition to to the compression. There are some non lossy formats that are pretty good but the data bloat is huge. Additionally my concern with the new 400mps codec is that if it's compressing every frame individually then overall the compression is going to be more severe than the existing 150mbs codec so it may not be quite the miracle everyone is expecting????2 points

Sony's new full frame CineAlta camera is announced: VENICE
EthanAlexander and one other reacted to jax_rox for a topic
The F3 has Slog1, a radically different curve to both Slog2 and Slog3. I remember plenty of people struggling with SLog3 on the F55, for example, who had come from Alexas and not put the time in to learn the curve. Exposing 'correctly' using a LUT is entirely different to learning how the curve works and placing your exposure where you want it. Which you need to do. I was disappointed with the noise and dynamic range out of Alexa's until I learned how LogC works and exposed accordingly. CineAlta is Sony, so they have Slog2 or 3. They're not pseudo-logs. Canon's C-log started as a pseudo-log. It's morphed since then, but it's original intention was to have a 'lightweight' log that was easy to grade and get a good image out of quickly. It comes at the expense of dynamic range (though Canon cameras also use digital gain for ISO, rather than the Sony/Alexa/RED method of shifting mid-point, which also affects both dynamic range and noise). Sony's intention is a more aggressive curve that gives you the maximum dynamic range possible. It's a more aggressive curve than the Alexa's LogC. If you expose it with knowledge of SLog and how it works and where it's best to expose the things you want exposed, it looks great. If you treat SLog3 like C-log or LogC you're going to think it sucks. That's not really a fault on the manufacturer, and realistically there's nothing forcing you to buy or use a Sony camera if you're dead-set against it. Many continue to at all levels of production, despite how supposedly terrible they are. It's a different curve to all of those. You should learn any curve you're going to be shooting on and expose for that particular curve as they're all different and they all put their exposures at different values and hold more or less information in some areas. SLog3 (and 2) are much more aggressive curves than all of those. None of those other curves put skin tones at 35 IRE. I've honestly never had an issue with Sony's white balance, so don't know what you're talking about. Do you mean AWB..? Look, I ain't no Sony fanboy, but I've used Sony's a lot (just as I have Alexa's and Reds and Panasonics). But I spend more than 5 minutes testing how to appropriately expose cameras. Of course I have camera preferences. But I'm a DP who shoild be able to make any camera look good. So when the best the rental house can do on our budget is an F5 or F55 or perhaps an FS7 (and/or I have to use my A7sII in some capacity), I'm going to say 'sure, I can make them look good' because I know I can. I'm not going to complain because Sony make 'such terrible cameras' (that somehow only a small subset of people seem to have trouble with...). I don't really like the images out of the C300. I'm not a fan of Canon's orange tints and ultra-warm skin tones generally. But I understand it and can work with it if necessary. I'm not going to hit up an Internet forum and talk about how bad Canon is because I don't like their camera as much.2 points -

EthanAlexander and one other reacted to jax_rox for a topic
The sensors are different, though they use the same CFA. And really, 'not nearly as good' has a slightly different meaning when talking about the F65. You're certainly right, but the F55 has been used extensively on numerous ultra high-end TV shows and feature films and I would posit that plenty here wouldn't even know. But that's kinda the point. Canon has tweaked Clog to get more out of it, but it's essentially designed as a 'pseudo-log' for consumer use that was able to hold more dynamic range than would otherwise be possible, however still be workable in 8-bit and be easy to pull it back to 'normal'. S-log is entirely different. And that's the problem. You really need to learn your log curves to make things look 'right' - otherwise you shouldn't shoot log. Many people did (and still do) come from Canon and attempt to apply their basic knowledge of Canon log to Sony footage and then get upset when it doesn't work the way they want. S-log3 puts skin tones at about 35-40%IRE or something. Which is super low. You look at that in your live view, assume the skin tones are underexposed, crank the exposure so they look right, and then when you come to grade it can't figure out why your skin tones look so bad. Turns out S-log doesn't put as much information into the exposure where you've ended up putting your skin tones, so of course they start to look ugly. Then you blame Sony for not being able to make a camera that looks any good. Man, it's cheaper than an Alexa SXT. Alexa, which uses SxS cards or needs Codex cartridges and a more expensive card slot for raw, doesn't have a full frame sensor, doesn't shoot in 8k and doesn't have auto focus.2 points -
I have done some testing around the house and garden with the DP3Q and the colors and details are just out of this world. Much better than I got with the SDQ due to the awesome 50mm lens. Its Macro capabilities is very fun and welcome as well. I knew it would wipe the floor detail wise with the other high mp cameras that I have had/have. But that it would be this much clearer not only in tonality.. I'm blown. AF is pretty good to. Better than excepted but still slow of course compared to a a6000 or something. Focus ring is very smooth. Screen is nice. Grip is.. there... at least I will hopefully have some interesting samples to post soon.2 points

Why are modern TV's defaulted to horrible settings out the box?
kaylee reacted to Oliver Daniel for a topic
You've all probably experienced / noticed this, but it's something that really hits a bone. Modern TV's come defaulted with some horrible setting, sometimes called "True Motion" or "Smooth Motion" - making everything look like it's being broadcast at a high frame rate - sometimes I perceive it as high as the look of continuous 120fps. Most fictional TV series and anything cinematic suddenly looks like a soap opera or behind the scenes video. Everything looks cheap. Certainly with a lot of TV going for the cinematic, progressive feel - this really doesn't make any sense. For instance, I went round to a friends, he was watching The Walking Dead. Without knowing this, I assumed he was watching some cheap nasty Z-movie DVD from a bargain bucket. He said it was The Walking Dead. I was thinking, why is it playing at 50fps? He had no idea what I was complaining about. I turned off the crappy motion setting, and bingo, it locked great! Dramatically far better. Afterwards, he said "Oh yeah!", it does look better. Another friend of mine started showing his parents my videos on his TV. I had to stop him because his TV's "motion" settings made the frames look so fast, that it really cheapened the look and feel of the videos, like they were shot on a home video camera. Of course, I changed the setting. It's happened over and over, that I've now become the rather cringey "TV settings genius" in my family / friend circle. The thing is, most people have no idea and are watching TV at these horrible settings and don't care. So, content creators, who are trying so hard to reach that high end, cinematic feel may arguably be wasting their time, as the look and quality is just thrown out of the bin? Do you think it's a problem? What are your thoughts?1 point -
Hey, I've been lurking for a while now, and now it's time to post something. I have a GX80 for a few months now. Last week I found the following video about a DIY windbreaker for the built in MIC. Thanks Laurier. I liked the A7RII, I had a shooting a few months ago with some Milvus glass and it was really great. Im buying used gear now and don't have access to a A7RII, but if something appears it will be my first option. Talking about glass I'm not really into autofocus. I really like manual lenses with a good follow focus. Now I have access to 3 Leica R lenses, and soon I want to buy 3 Zeiss Milvus. My options now are A7S + Shogun or A7SII alone. I think I'm going with the A7S + Shogun this time, and the when the A7S/R III comes out I'm thinking to sell the A7S body and buy the new one.1 point

First Footage From EVA1

No worries, it's an opinion based on an average launch film. I can't remember what I said about the Ursa Mini 4.6 (a camera that has a brilliant image). I'd say now that it's slightly less organic than the original BM cams - but i think that's got something to do with the higher resolution making it look a bit more "real". Back to the EVA1 - I've always wanted Panasonic to bring this out. I'm sure it will be an awesome cam. I've very unscientifically analysed with my tired eyes that the launch film displays an in-between GH5 to Varicam interpolation / cadence / whatever it's called. Expected right?1 point -
Are you considering the A7SII/A7RII as well or only the first versions A7S/A7R? I think the color science and options were improved on the second versions plus they do have sensor stabilization that one could use in a pinch.1 point

Ooh, interesting, love me some more native mount Sigmas! The 30mm f/1.4 DC DN is killer, great value. Speaking of price, man, those EX DN 19mm & 30mm f/2.8 were around a hundred bucks each and optically super sound. Build quality however wasn't really something to write home about and the look otherwise wasn't all too exciting though. The DC DN definitely takes that up a notch. Interesting that they would aim for MFT not APS-C/E-mount coverage with a MFT option. Will they be joining the format with a camera of their own?1 point

@kidzrevil Great video...You really have a specific, unique own style of shooting and grading. Just some questions: A. It seems, the shots were mostly handheld? If so, you have quite steady hands... B. You still own the A7S, or have you sold it? C. Do / did you generally like the A7S (IQ, ergonomics, handling, general feeling, etc.)? haha, not sure, I came across it years ago, it was probably running the popular videos, it has over 16 million views, lol. Not sure how you'd go about finding the ones you remember. So after all the discussions here and always seeing Kidzrevil's stuff on social media, I'll give the diffusion filters a try. Got a Warm Black Pro Mist 1/8 off eBay for 28€ incl shipping. Should arrive today and I'll give it a spin on the weekend. Wish I had thought of getting a step-up adapter already to use it on the Voigtländer, for now I'll try with the Olympus 12-40 2.8. In unrelated note, we have now bought way more native m4/3 lenses than I wanted. My girlfriend hogs all the lenses I like but the 17.5mm 0.95 (she doesn't dig the manual focus). We now have the Panasonic 14mm 2.5, 25mm 1.4 and 42.5mm 1.7 and especially with the GX80 the size of the system is really neat.1 point

Yes it is. You can never say that a higher resolution is always better than a low. Because we know for a fact that people like both. DR.. some prefer a contrasty look. Sharpness can make an image both beautiful and ugly (just look at your new lenses. They do not win any sharpness measuring contests, but you still like them). This list goes on and on. Name one variable and I will find you people that prefer both sides of a scale. IQ is a subjective feeling. Not a measurable fact. Understanding this is one of the things that separates a creator from a "guy with a camera" imo.1 point -

Sure - these are all technical aspects of image quality and they are technically meaningful - I take notice of them myself. In my original comment I was referring to @jcs's (who I admire greatly in most things) notion of setting up semi-scientific tests to determine compression and DOF differences between two sensor/film formats - essentially trying to quantify an aesthetic quality or preference. The essence is that no scientific test will ever determine why a medium format photograph appeals more to an individual than the same scene shot on full frame or micro four thirds, or vice versa. It seems a pointless exercise, which was the crux of my comment. I spend and have spent an inordinate amount of money on cameras and I like to have instruments that are as close to the best as I can't afford but can justify to myself (if not to my wife). That's not because I think they will make me a better photographer or film maker - if they do it will only be tangentially because they make the process easier. The best camera in the world can't make up for a lack of artistic sensibility or vision, while the worst camera in the world won't fully obscure the same qualities. I buy expensive cameras for the same reason that I rarely take photographs or videos on my phone - because I enjoy the sensual aspect of making images with a well-made tool designed for that purpose. Scientific tests have their place in determining the measures you mention, but I just can't see their value in determining immeasurable phenomena.1 point -

Exactly! Or getting that same computer to decide whether Rembrandt or Monet is the better artist. Another factor could just be that the majority of people willing to make the many thousands of dollars/pounds/euros investments for medium format cameras and lenses simply tend to be accomplished photographers.1 point -

But that sounds like really bad log in my ears. To me it sounds just like when people defend Sonys weird white balance with having to learn it... thats like having to learn how to remove the lens cap. A simple and fundamental function that is super easy on all other cameras... Nah.. it sucks imo. Just badly done. And I know some will be tempted to say that its me that sucks.. dont bother. Tascam DR70D and Zoom H5
Damphousse reacted to IronFilm for a topic
I was quite skeptical beforehand too, also had never been a great fan of any Zoom product beforehand (didn't help either I'd just got a Tascam DR680 just before the F8 came out!). What used Sound Devices gear??? You either need to go for something very old like a 744 or 552 (and you'd still be buy double or triple what a F8 is! And even more than an F4). If you're looking at something more modern like a 688 or 633, they're almost impossible to find easily secondhand, and when they do appear they disappear very quickly and only at a very small discount to buying new (thus you're still spending thousands more than an F8 would cost). If Sound Devices depreciated at the same rate as used cameras, and had as many easily to be found on the secondhand market as there are cameras, then I'd agree it makes sense to go secondhand for a Sound Devices. Actually their are not heaps and heaps of great audio forums out there when it comes to location sound recordist's needs. Those general audio forums have users whose needs and wants are so far off the mark from what a location sound recordist experiences that getting advice from there can be just as bad as getting it from video forums!! But yes, you can find useful info their if you remember they're seeing (hearing!) things from a totally different perspective than yourself! Thus take everything they say with one big grain of salt! Even so, I enjoy reading them and hanging out there for what crumbs of relevant info you can pick up. However in the end, jwsoundgroup is the *ONLY* forum dedicated to location sound recordist (since my shift in focus to sound, I now spend more time there than on EOSHD! Sorry :-/ ). But the environment there to newbie/hobbyist sound recordists is very hostile. A thread like this about DR70D vs H5 would run a high risk of just being mercilessly ripped into. So in the end, the amount of info there is for the newbie/hobbyist/semi-pro location sound recordist is somewhat limited and scattered (one of the reasons why I started up my youtube channel to vblog on this topic, to encourage more discussion of it, and help further spread more good info on this).1 point -
Congratulations on the new new camera ... it was one of my favorite digital cameras ... bought mine when the were 37K ... actually traded out of some 8 bodies and 15 lenses for a H2D then moved to the H3D II 39.
