Petition to keep NX alive!!!
IronFilm and 3 others reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
"It's now 2017 and the NX system is still alive and going strong. In some cases, the NX cameras still offer technology still missing from other manufactures to date. Think about how impressive this is? That's how ahead of the curve you were." Very true! The technology was an incredible achievement. If they wanted to just do an NX2, an update, I am sure they could swing the factories back into action. Problem is, they have to justify the business plan to the Samsung board and CEO, who has his eyes on sales numbering in the millions. I hope Samsung can see the advantage of doing a smaller scale brand prestige project with the NX2, ahead of a full frame camera launch in the future that grabs a big chunk of the market.4 points -
Magic Lantern Raw Video
Jonesy Jones and 2 others reacted to mercer for a topic
Still plugging away on my film. And still could not be happier with ML Raw and the 5D3. I went out on Saturday to to do a couple pick up shots because my first attempt was a little noisier than I wanted and I wanted to get this scene before the water gets too cold. So I took out the Canon 35mm f2... what a lens. Anyway here is a screengrab from the shoot and a test color grade after I processed the footage. I'm still hoping to test the 3.5K builds soon, but right now... for my needs... the 1080p is more than enough.3 points -
Petition to keep NX alive!!!
Francesco Tasselli and one other reacted to cojocaru27 for a topic
Hey, someone put some effort into creating a petition for keeping NX line alive. He even got an answer from Samsung Korea Ceo in which was requested for a better number of people to sign the petition. BUt overall the feedback was positive. If we can show Samsung that we are many, if we all stay together, maybe we'll have a chance if not for a NX2 at least for some new updates for NX1. Let's take a bit of time and sign the petition. It only takes 2 min. Thanks https://www.ipetitions.com/petition/samsung-keep-nx-alive2 points -
DPReview appears to be transitioning into a FStoppers / Petapixel type shithole
Justin Bacle and one other reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
Haha yes when a business model is broken to the point of behaving like the Stasi then it is going to get shut down some way or another, and I'm glad the rumours sites won't be able to ping my Amazon purchases back at me, whilst selling it around stuff they cut and pasted from someone's YouTube channel. None of those are advertising cookies though. The reddit one is because there's a Reddit post embed function built into the forum software. The Google ones are for fonts, visitor counters, some common scripts that speed up page loading and style sheets. Viglink is an affiliate link enabler offered as part of IP.Board (the forum software) but it is disabled on the EOSHD forum as I didn't want it automatically underlining every camera name with a link to B&H.... Annoying, and penny wise, pound foolish bullcrap.2 points -
More love for the Sony A6500?
shanebrutal reacted to Oliver Daniel for a topic
In December 2016, I wanted a stills camera. After some thought, I was swayed by the A6500 because of the video features. (typical!). I've been testing this camera mostly on the excellent Zhiyun Crane (on a price / value ratio I'd say it's the best gimbal you can buy). On my most recent shoot, I put it in the deep end. I used Slog2, the 18-105mm kit lens and exclusively used autofocus for the entire shoot. Felt weird. (stills attached) Overall, this has the potential to be a very special camera... but it's not...quite...there...yet. Here's my mini mini mini review: PROS The 4k image is the best 8 bit 4k I've used. Certainly the best in Sony's lineup. There's a very special sauce going on here - it's super gradeable, detailed and the A6500 colour is much improved. Colour is improved? The image and skin tones are very, very pleasing - both using a standard everyday look and a stylised look (which I tend to go for). Sony look? Not here. Autofocus is very responsive. Absolutely essential on the Zhiyun Crane, makes it so much easier to focus on the shot as the image is 99% always in focus, even at shallow DOF. Compact power. Very nice to hold in the hand without a rig. Super light. 120fps is surprisingly good. Sharpened up and exposed nicely, it's a stellar 120fps. CONS Rolling shutter is a problem. It's easily avoidable however it can be annoying and ruin a shot. There's very little in the 120fps mode. Battery life is poor. This is a constant issue with Sony mirrorless. Even if they make the bodies a bit bigger for a higher capacity battery, needs sorting! The LCD dims very low. Maybe this is to manage heat or whatever. But the LCD does dim quite significantly. LCD gets scratched easily. These cameras need a cover to come with the camera, or flip the other way round. Got 3 scratches on my LCD from transit. Some of the buttons are flimsy and thin. Sony need to extrude the buttons more. The wheel on the back i especially fiddly to use. CONCLUSION The 4k image in XAVC-S is absolutely fantastic - I've not been wowed by image quality in a while. But it do get giddy when editing it. What's going on there? The shortcomings do dilute the experience a little - and Sony should sort them out for the A6700. With other expected updates, this would be a classic camera. There should be more love for this camera, as it sits under the hype shadow of the GH5. (I expect the GH5 to be awesome, but haven't used it). Overall - it's a very useful tool in the bag with some stunning features, great for stills too.1 point -
Manual focusing on fly-by-wire MFT lenses
JazzBox reacted to Amazeballs for a topic
I just bought a used Pana 25 1.4 and besides its stunning imagery, I was very surprised by its manual focus capabilities, which was unexpected to me. This lens was produced back in 2011, but its the best manual focus fly-by-wire native MFT lens that I've used so far and by a great margin. I own 14-140 zoom (3.5-5.6), 42.5 1.7 and 20 1.7. They all are PITA for manual focusing, especially 42.5 1.7 which I would consider otherwise a superb small and affordable lens, but its MF is just so wired - one second very slow, then suddenly blazing fast. Completely unreliable for video and I hate its unpredictable acceleration and speed. Who's genius idea was to setup modern MFT lens behaviour like that? The 25 1.4 has fast smooth MF with close to none acceleration so I can easily pull focus on any shot without any extra effort or shaking my camera. Its reliable and constant. But all other lenses I've tried are plain terrible at that! So I wounder, WHY PANASONIC MAKE THEIR CURRENT LENSES BEHAVE THIS WAY?! And it would be so EASY to correct, just by adding some extra menu setting with a profile for every lens for a) acceleration control (starting from zero) and the lens speed itself. Only two freaking parameters and thats all. That would safe so many people from constant struggle with that MF flybywire bullshit. And now try to explain my why its not done yet? And consider that Panasonic stronghold is video, they are perceived by many as video camera makers, they excel in video.. but, they did not offer any solution in that department for all this years. Unexplainable idiocy. BTW, maybe some hero hacker can modify MFT lenses firmware to change those parameters? That would solve this too. P.S. Well at least now I have one lens with which I can focus comfortably.1 point -
Suggestion for GH5 lenses?
jonpais reacted to Fredrik Lyhne for a topic
@Mastermind It's very difficult to only choose 3 lenses for everything. If I made money shooting video I would agree with @jonpais and get the Veydras, but since I'm an enthusiast hybrid shooter I went with the PL lenses and I think they're great. The 12mm and 42,5 are really special and I just got the 8-18mm and it seems to be a very nice lens as well. Have a look at the great stuff by @jonpais and @kidzrevil are doing with native and vintage lenses. If the size and weight are not an issue the Sigma seems great, otherwise I would go native. Also check out Martin Wallgren on instagram, youtube og vimeo, really talented guy.1 point -
New EOSHD Pro Color 3.0 and EOSHD Pro LOG comes to Sony cameras
Andrew Reid reacted to EthanAlexander for a topic
Edit: This wasn't properly converted to sRGB, so it's a bit more contrasty/saturated than what I've been seeing in Resolve, but it still shows off the skin tones: Had a no-prep interview yesterday and I chose pro log S. Super happy with the resulting look on her skin. Compared to the amount of time I spend working with S Log3 I'd say this color profile is a real winner. This was on an FS5 shooting 10bit.1 point -

The problem with the 'real' (old) media is that instead of standing their ground and weathering the storm against 'new' media and actually upping their standards, they shit themselves and joined in. You only have to look at the websites of traditional newspapers in the UK to see whats happened as they are culling more of their content from social media and trying to sensationalise it. You regularly now see what 20 years ago would have been a disagreement between two anonymous people in a small town elevated to national 'news' because its so easy, cheap - and natural - for the new crop of journalists at these publications to source these stories and amplify them. We now have a situation where there is a generation that hasn't grown up with any real depth or quality to the media that they are exposed to. If 'real' media is now just a randomly compiled, delayed and watered down version of 'new' media then why the hell would anyone pay for it anyway when you can get the other stuff for free? The future of online might actually be semi-offline for many of us as we seek higher quality of everything from journals, to music, to films but we will have to pay for it directly and properly. If we want people who are providing the content to be serious then we have to be too and accept that we'll have to pay for it. I think it is actually doable and the burnout that a large number of people are feeling about the internet could make the timing of it not far off. The great thing about the internet can be that there is no filter between creators and consumers but sometimes we need to accept that that filter sometimes wasn't a bad thing. These days, everyone wants to celebrate that the big corporate monsters of print, broadcast, music and film have been bypassed but to my mind they've now been replaced by corporates that are far, far more sinister.1 point

DPReview appears to be transitioning into a FStoppers / Petapixel type shithole
OliKMIA reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
Thanks for the thoughtful comments OliKMIA. I didn't see the emails, were they sent recently? I was in a similar position to you. I've written for DPReview, had some friends there, but their main editor was a constant road block and the main driving force behind the new click bait led-approach there. I just never saw eye to eye with him. I actually started off writing a bit for DigitalRev before that, but you see - these places are actually making a shit ton of money and they pay writers peanuts. The best thing you can do is to use them as a step on the ladder towards starting your own blog or YouTube channel. The exposure they give you is more valuable than the peanuts they feed you. But eventually you will starve and have to eat something. When I look at NoFilmSchool, PetaPixel and yes FStoppers I usually find that 90% of the content isn't original. Certainly not in terms of camera reviews. The reviews section reads like a top 10 of YouTube videos. It is outsourced to writers like yourself who aren't paid enough and aren't part of a core team in a building. This is against my principals because I think it's bad business and bad for the internet. There should be more investment in talent like yourself and more campuses in all major cities where these sites invest in space for writers, reviewers and filmmakers. Perhaps the money required just isn't there, but if Patreon can raise $60m in funding for their site from investors, I am sure a site as high profile as Amazon can invest a little more in what they own - aka DPReview - and give something back to the photography community. FStoppers I am sure is a multi-million dollar business and instead of maintaining a high traffic volume through the current model of curating content, should be writing it in-house from scratch, and Google should be the ones who are curating the content, showing more of an editorial hand by moving good stuff up the rankings by hand rather than relying on clicks and popularity matrixes. The danger for DPR now is that their front page click-bait is drowning out the hard work of the core team such as Richard Butler and his original articles, reviews, technical pieces and opinion. It will attract a different audience and kill their core audience stone dead. The clicks will all be heading towards the reposts and sensational gimmickry, and away from what made them such a respected authority on cameras. As creators we are also users. I am a consumer. I'm a visitor of several other blogs and sites. The general feeling whenever I surf the net these days for camera news is sheer disappointment in the standard of content and I actually often come back to the EOSHD forum instead and ask a question or reply to topics, because you often learn more from your own community than you do from the broader industry one.1 point -

I just started to write for Fstoppers as a "staff writer" in July and here is my modest and humble opinion about the situation. 1. Business model: You get what you pay for. DPR, Petapixel, Fstoppers and many other websites are free so the money must come from somewhere. Unfortunately it seems that adding more articles is the way to maintain of visits, views, thus revenues in a depressed ads market. The money problem is general and affects the entire media/press industry. People got use to free news and it's very hard to transition to the payed premium model. If someone has the solution, I'm listening. Many blogger or Instagramers have more followers than the Washington Post and DPR. There is a big revolution going on whether we like it or not and traditional media are loosing grounds. I agree with the dumbing down spiral of internet but this is also a consequence of the society we live in were the average level of education if going down the toilet and we have a generation of narcissist kids subjugated by their selfies and likes. For having experience in the food industry, food writers used to be kings, then they got beaten up by bloggers and now it's all about Instagram. I guess people are too lazy to read a short review now. Cute low resolution images with Fujifilm like filters is what sells. Up to the point were even chefs now design their menu and dishes based on "how good it looks on IG".... And the list of fucked up thing could go on such as the NDA tactics where some brands (mostly in electronic world) slice the disclosure announcement of a product overtime with various release date to maintain the public attention for more than 24 hours until another news killed the previous one. 2. My motivation to become a writer at Fstoppers: I started to write at Fstoppers because I'm very active on many forums and FB groups. When I saw the "job offer" I decided to apply because I though it would be nice to spend some of my forum/facebook groups time on writing actual articles for "real" media. For your information, the money is not my main motivation and it's very little by the way. I'm also tired of endless sterile debate on FB or Forums. I don't have the ambition to change the world, I'm just a small guy and I try to stick to my area of expertise. So far I haven't had any issue with the editors and they always accepted my articles. Actually one of my first article was questioning the Canon conservatism. I'm not sure how long I will do this but for now it's interesting. For instance this "position" allowed me to interview Tom Lowe about Awaken and he gave me a lot of technical info. 3. Type of photo website: To be honest I'm a little bit disappointed by the DPR move because they are known for their depth reviews. But like anybody else, it's a corporation with a bottom line, staff on payroll, server fees, etc. It's own by amazon and the guys at the accounting department probably asked for some change. Personally I don't think there is anything wrong with DPR and Petapixel or even the rumors blogs. I usually check them all and do my due diligence. They all fall in a specific range of information. Petapixel and Fstoppers publish some interesting tutorial and short news (and yes, some clickbait, no one does it right, not even here?). Most of the time the rumors stuff is crap but sometime I find interesting info. Everyone bitch about them but many of us check them out anyway. Let's no be hypocrite here... many threads and article here were started via rumors dot com links. 4. Repost: after two month at Fstoppers I try to publish original content but sometime I got busy (and yes, lazy) and I decide to do a quick repost. A repost at Fstoppers is not a shameless copy/paste steal, just a short introduction of an article/video to invite the reader to visit the original content. I don't see anything wrong about it. We actually receive a shitload of emails everyday from people asking to repost their work/tutorial/guest article. When I spot something interesting, I do a small repost article. 5. The future of Internet and note to Andrew: Unfortunately I don't think that Facebook or Google care much about what we think. Andrew can demand what they "should do" or how internet should be but nobody care... They are huge international cash machine with advanced corporate tax and legal optimization systems. They are not cool and don't care about values and moral despite some green-washing and PR campaigns to look nice. We can create a 10, 100 or 1000 forum threads about it but nothing will happen beyond our tiny and confidential community. They'll start to something the day it make the headline of USA todays and see some impact on their stock (before that they'll probably spend millions in lobbying to bend the law making process) Andrew, I sent you a couple of emails with request for interview on Fstoppers. Not that I want to steal your content to get views (I could do quick clickbait repost for that) but because I appreciate your work ethic and deep technical knowledge. You make a lot of valid comments and I 'd like to give you more exposure. Not that you need me anyway but I thought I could help at my modest level. Regards1 point

Thanks Marty. It's starting to come together. This whole project began as a 5 minute test short back in April but then I've been so pleased with the results, I just kept going. Now I need to start casting some more characters so I can finish the thing. And yeah I agree about the second one. It looks fine but lacks maybe the depth one can achieve with ML Raw. But for now these are all just color tests that I will finalize at a later date... when I learn how to color grade. Anyway, hope all is well with you. How is your short going?1 point

Hey Glenn, lookin massive! Framing, so it´s 35mm on full 5D sensor, would be a 17mm on full m43 then? Color is looking awesome. The second frame with the LUT looks like a frame with a LUT though, which can be nice but to my eyes it does not match the quality of this first frame. By the way, cool profile pic. Sony A7S Mark 3 - What to expect
IronFilm reacted to Gregormannschaft for a topic
Oh come on. If you're really doing medium to high budget video projects, you are most certainly not rocking up on set with a mirrorless camera. Nor is it so easy to justify a switch between the two. The GH5 footage has the potential to be cleaner, sharper, punchier - for sure. But the difference between the two cameras is not night and day, and I'm sure a lot of clients won't be able to spot the difference. This doesn't even take into account glass, or lighting or crew size which have a much larger effect. Really, you're just perpetuating this camera myth where people like to think a new camera with flashier specs will elevate their projects, and in turn make them feel like they're a better filmmaker by owning the latest piece of gear.1 point -
Hi That is the footnote they put to that statement. It's basically something SandDisk has made up for marketing, as that card doesn't show a V rating, we know it doesn't support the new real-time recording protocol and there is no guaranteed minimum write speed. There are 2 problems with using cards that don't support the new Video (V) protocol. 1) The GH5 may not be able to reach or sustain the required bit-rates full stop unless the camera can switch to using the Video protocol mode with a supported card. The new protocol changes completely how the camera writes to the card in order to ensure high speed writes that are sustained and never drop below the guaranteed minimum. The GH5 firmware may even block the use of cards that aren't rated at V60 or better. 2) All-Intra is a sustained constant (more or less) write speed, the card and hardware have to sustain the write speed without any hiccups. IPB used in cameras is a variable bit rate that allows borderline cards chance to catch up and buffers to empty as the write bit-rate ebbed and flowed so we got away without needing to worry too much about guaranteed minimum write speeds, this is not the case with All-Intra at these high recording rates, it is much less forgiving. The V moniker shows a guaranteed minimum write speed, achieved using new hardware in the camera and card (for example a memory card with the V rating reports to the camera about itself so the best writing scheme can be negotiated and both card and camera can switch to a new real-time streaming recording protocol). Bench mark tests are also going to be something we should be wary of as new V type cards arrive and are tested and reviewed. The reason being a card may benchmark much slower than it's V60 or V90 rating suggests it should and so look a poor choice for cameras like the GH5, but this is simply because the benchmark software/hardware will not engage the Video recording protocol, so isn't testing it for video recording. The software and readers will catch up in time, but it's something to we need to consider if looking at reviews. For real-time video recording on cameras like the GH5 the only rating we should now look for is the V rating, it's the whole reason it was brought in, because all other ratings show the burst or average speeds and guaranteed absolutely nothing for real-time video. Anyone investing in memory cards now for use with the GH5 and All-Intra based on some headline speed on the packaging where that card doesn't show the required V moniker , is going to be wasting their money. There is a reason why V60 and V90 cards are arriving now and being sold at a premium, they are different to normal cards. For example Sandisk can't take their current high speed cards and simply print V60 or V90 on there as it's more than just a printed a number and their current cards don't have the hardware/firmware to support the new standard. Regards Phil1 point

This guy gets a lot of stick (probably for his young age) from the NoFilmSchool trolls and facebook camera police, but I have to say he brings up much more interesting knowledge and talks much more wisdom than the majority of other camera / filmmaking Youtubers. Simon Cade of DSLRguide: https://www.youtube.com/user/DSLRguide The channel has these qualities: Doesn't talk very much at all about camera specs and new gear, more what you do with what you've got. Gives his own insights into his thought processes and inspirations. Gives well illustrated creative and technical tips to his "beginners / enthusiast" target audience. Doesn't bullshit and is very open about the purpose of his Youtube channel. Very genuine and authentic fell to his content. and many more..... He also still films on a t3i / 600d - and does a bloody great job of using it for his Vlogs. He raises the point that he doesn't need another camera yet and would rather spend the money on other areas of his filmmaking.1 point -

First Footage From EVA1
Juxx989 reacted to Tony Manero for a topic
Hi All, let me introduce myself, I'm a professional photographer and film director, been working for the last 20 years and assisted before. I come from film, some of our video productions were shot indie, some with proper budget and some in super35 film. Few opinions about the eva-1 footage. I was expecting more, and if this is not the final product they should have waited a little bit more to show footage. In specifics, the DP either messed up the exposure (hard to believe as it's a panasonic infomercial) or the camera, when exposed to the right, has a bad response on shadows? Otherwise it would not make any sense having those almost clipped highlights. Unless that's the way this camera handle the DR on the highlights. I feel that all pros and movie lovers that in order, want a cool toy to experiment or a tool to be able to properly start into visual story telling, need a machine that handle well highlights and deliver a motion that resemble film. If documentary/occasional narrative is the goal, then the c300MKII, or the newly c200 (fantastic raw footage, great toy) it's the best choice. We can all agree that the reference camera for narrative is the Alexa (not a fan of Red even if dragon is better than the past). In fact I was having this conversation with my DP, and good friend, who helped Arri in the Alexa development from the d21. The conversation was about the fact that very few cameras produce a footage that resemble film, the makers seems not to get, or care, that highlights handling and motion should be the priority. This camera, in this first clip, seems to fail to give that organic (as they call it in all this forums) look necessary to recall 35 or super 16. The last little camera that was delivering that feel i played with was the little black magic pocket, it felt like going back to the sr3 years on 500 film. I was more impressed by the flexibility of the c200 raw footage. You can edit in mp4 and then proxy the raw footage. About the eva, they probably don't want to kill the LT market which is barely 6k more expensive, but a real pro level camera. Have a great weekend all, Best1 point -

More love for the Sony A6500?

Only lately I was tempted to buy the GH5 (after I had sold my Pocket), but decided to give the A6500 a try. Reluctantly, because ... > I had seen the awful menu of the A7S and A7rii The menu is a mess. Fortunately, you have the FN-button and can dial M1-M4 for quick access and your preferred shooting modes. > I'd never liked the Sony "color science" There is S-Log2. Within the last 2 months, I learned to expose it properly and (almost, with the help of the histogram) intuitively for every situation except night shots, where Cine1 seems to work better. The DR preserved within S-Log2 is very good, the GH5, 10-bit or not, has less. The colors? I tried a few things and found the Omeneo primers (20 bucks) to be to my taste. Not much headroom left for extreme grading, but I'm not good at that anyway. > I was sceptic about the usability of AF Yes, I always focused manually. I still do, with very shallow DoF or in dark, low contrast places. But for most situations, the AFC is better than me. Fast, spot-on, reliable, no hunting. > I did not like any of the lowlight demos ... but nobody forces me to shoot like this. What's wrong with being able to shoot at ISO 6400 without needing Neat? > I heard terrible things about the rolling shutter I found this to be true. The solution to this is IBIS. Problem solved.1 point -

The Anamorphic lens REPAIR thread
Justin Bacle reacted to tony wilson for a topic
red stan's sage wisdom and advice on good and shit anamorphics. 1.small optics give you an easier life and nice close focus. 2.focus test your anamorphic as soon as you get it if you cannot get a sharp picture get a refund or a discount. 3.do not take any crap bull from a seller especially if he has sold you junk costing over 250 dollars. 4.if your lens has major damage it may be beyond economic repair meaning it could cost 2-5 times it's value for the repair. 5.with repairs expect a wait from 6 weeks to 3 months any good repair guy is always busy. i had a nikon lens take 6 months for a complicated repair once. 6.explain to repair guy clearly what you think is wrong it saves time and money. 7.except the fact that some anamorphics are just not worth saving or repairing 8.many ebay anamorphic optics are the same optics being purchased fiddled with then sold on. if in doubt walk away. 9.if your seller can take a foto of the lens and put a lengthy cut and past bull shit discription with a price tag of a 1000 dollars plus. ask him why he has not bothered to shoot through the anamorphic is it because it is soft : ) 10.at least 35% of anamorphics need servicing why do you think rental companies and studios had camera lens service depts. 11.main problems optic to optic alignment issue giving soft picture. dried out focus helicoid grease. dirty internal optics, fungus and external coating problems. lens separation. a lens clean and service should optimize the system allowing use of faster taking lens. why get stuck in the 1950s hollywood rut of f8-16 12.remember repairing a car after a major crash is gonna cost a lot more time and money than a simple service. 13.quality shipping box within a box method is a must. bad shipping with several impact drops along the journey will give you a bad lens. 14.i did not like ending on 13.1 point -
So now that you can "react" instead of just "like".. does a "confused" reaction, for example, still contribute to the reputation points of the member who made the post? Just curious; seems like it probably shouldn't work that way.0 points
