  1. Inspiration on so many levels!

  2. I was director and DP for a small budget commercial shoot yesterday and I chose the Digital Bolex as my camera of choice over the 1DC sitting in my bag. I put it on the MoVI M5 for the first time and it was a ton of fun having a sexy global shutter while getting gimbal shots! I honestly believe that if you light for it, the D16 creates some of the most stunning, rich colored footage I’ve ever seen. I had the option to rent a full RED Dragon kit, but I CHOSE Bolex with MFT mount. Shot using the rokinon 12mm MFT lens on the gimbal to keep the weight down, and the rest shot on old Super 16 Zeiss Super Speeds PL’s. The 9mm and 25mm were my favorites. I’m excited to put the edit together and show you what I got. All I can say after shooting with it all day yesterday is, it’s still a relevant camera for 2017 and creates stunning images that are truly unique.

  3. The G85 is a year old now, the GX85 about 1.5yrs. I'm not sure it's fair to compare them to the 6mo-old GH5, rather than the GH4, which they outclassed in some ways. The G90 and GX90 (or whatever the next generation are called) will certainly get some trickle-down features from the GH5. Personally, all I feel I can reasonably ask to be improved on my G85 would be higher-bitrate 1080p. 25mbps is a bit too skimpy when things start moving. Outside of that, it's been a great upgrade/sidegrade from the GH4 for me. Better color, better lowlight, and most importantly, IBIS. I paid $550 for the camera, I don't expect it to share everything with the quadruply-expensive GH5- even if it technically could (i.e. "artificial" marketing segmentation) share some things. Panasonic has every right to do this, both legally, and I even feel, "morally"- Panasonic is by far the most responsive to our segment of the market, and even if their cameras are "artificially" limited, they're still by far the best value on the DSLR/DSLM market for shooting video. If I was going to expend energy bitching at/about a camera company, Panasonic certainly wouldn't be my first choice. The way I see it, get busy switching, or get busy hacking, because I don't see much coming of the angst otherwise. Will it, though, actually? The last Panasonic to be hacked was the GH2. Vitaliy hasn't had any luck with the GH3 onwards, and Magic Lantern's work is all Canon-based, I don't see them starting from square one when they have their hands full with the Canons. I think holding out hope for a hack is a complete pipe dream at this point.

  4. I'm not really following this....are you suggesting that regardless of which camera you buy from Panasonic, or what you pay for it, all their cameras should be capable of the same features and IQ?

  5. Run and gun means one can carry around a camera with no rigs, poles, tripods or other aids shooting handheld, for hours. The FS700R needs the 7" Shogun Inferno attached by wire to shoot 4K60P and 120P RAW. Can this combo be used for run and gun? Well, if you think of the Shogun not as a monitor but as just an external recorder, then you can just put it in a shoulder bag. Convergent Design makes a very thin and flexible (you can tie it in knots they show) 3' SDI cable. So carry the recorder in a shoulder bag and shoot with the camera. The cable is so thin and flexible and long, it is as if it is not there (SDI cables also have more secure attachments than HDMI cables; no danger of the wire coming loose). To test this, I went to shoot the local chickens, in slo mo 4K. Cinematic chickens. Inferno in the shoulder bag, me, the camera and Zeiss 2470 FE OSS lens. From ProRes 422 HQ Slog2.

  6. I really think it's more like a hardware limit. You need hardware acceleration for 10bit H.264 and H.265. It's silicon, not software. If you don't feel like you got what you paid for on the G85 and GX85, then I'm amazedballs. They really do go beyond the specs you'd expect for the price. Any closer to the GH5 and what would be the point of ponying up $2000 for it? Making the G85 any better would kill the GH5 stone dead and nobody wants that to happen. Sensor readout speed isn't fast enough. It's not just the processor. Again it's not just software. The sensor has to be fast enough to scan for CDAF at over 240fps. If they gave users the option to buy V-LOG for an extra $100 on a $500 camera, they would lose $1500 not gain $100. I'm all for generosity, and Panasonic are much more generous than Canon. You could argue that Sony having S-LOG on their consumers cameras gives them a bad reputation because a lot of consumers don't know how to grade it properly and it ends up all over the internet making people think Sony cameras shoot weird looking video. You don't expect 1st class service when you buy an economy ticket on a flight though do you? So why expect it with cameras?

  7. F3 with the BMVA. In a heartbeat. Form factor takes some getting used to, but I actually find it very easy to operate on a tripod or with a back-weighted shoulder rig. You just have to set up your custom buttons properly. There are hard buttons/switches for almost everything, standard cinema I/O, and excellent reliability. Low light, DR, colors, roll off, and malleability in post (with an external recorder) are all outstanding. It has a ton of advantages over a comparable DSLR, too, like outstanding battery life, XLRs, internal NDs, interchangeable mounts, SDI out (hard to go back once you have it), more mounting points without the need for a cage, top handle for low angle shots, no record limit, and the most accurate peaking function I've ever used. My current rig is very simple: the F3 body with a simple rail/riser system and a Tilta follow focus, a camcorder battery with a d-tap output, and a Blackmagic Video Assist mounted to the top handle with power running to it from the d-tap. That means no multiple batteries to keep track of and a streamlined rig. As a 1080p cinema camera, it's the absolute best available for the money.

  8. Sorry, I won't be able to say anything about Canada or other markets as I worked only at London. You guys may be right about their decision for Canadian market and may already decided not to continue. That could be the reason the staff didn't know anything about NX. Samsung even never launched Galaxy Beam smartphone in the UK officially. This phone was sold and marketed in different countries. It is mostly the son of the chairman destroyed everything after the chairman was in hospital. He made a lot of changes and made us redundant. ? But, still would buy an NX2 if they ever release it or bring back the NX line.

  9. Even as a C300 fanboy (I love the ease of use), I agree that the F3 is a better cinema camera with a technically stronger image. The image isn't as sharp but it's more than sharp enough and otherwise it's better in every way except codec... and color is subjective. It has slightly better DR and 10 bit 444 out vs 422 8 bit out (though that's all Canon Log really needs). Same pixel pitch etc. as the Alexa I believe (very similar at least). But rent it and try it out if you can. Coming from a dSLR, I couldn't deal with F3 ergonomics, especially when the C300 had 90% of the image in a much smaller form factor. I also liked the Canon colors a bit more, but the F3 has good color, not like later Sony cameras which are a very mixed bag. If you're considering both, try both, but I'm a Canon fanboy who did not like the F5 but I still think the F3 is a steal. Plus, 60p! I also like the F35 but it's more trouble.

  11. Yup, all businesses practice segmentation of some sort or another. And yup, Canon does it far worse than Panasonic! (or Sony)

    Best super 35mm camera?

HD? PL? S35? 60p? NDs? DR? Colors? Lowlight? Sounds like you just described the Sony PMW-F3! ;-) Smart!! No contest. F3 wins. Yeah, JVC LS300 or secondhand Sony FS700 are probably the only other S35 cinema cameras with NDs I'd consider on an ultra low budget, other than the Sony F3. Rather go with a BMD Pocket/Micro than the BMCC

  13. To get that kind of footage I reckon I could get used to that. Shot with fs700 in the past. They are getting quite cheap we’re I live now, might be time.

  16. I do not even own any Panasonic, but they are clearly the spearhead of innovation and features, especially for video. seriously, for less than 2000$, what else the GH5 DOES NOT have? Also, you can get new GH4 for less than 999€ also. then you are complaining for a 500€ camera? Canon do not even offer 4K in double and triple price. Nikon do not offer. Fuji will release a 4K upgrade more than a year after a camera release (this is the most profound "hold back on features" case, ever), Sony -Sony is Sony, full of promises, under deliver on many important aspects.

  18. They sold it at several London drugs around Vancouver. Actually after the time of death was more or less declared on the NX London drugs put the NX1 pro kit on clearance for a really good deal I think it was only $2,300CAD or something cant remember exactly. EDIT: Just to clarify London drugs is a chain of stores in BC that sells everything from bread to computers and as far as I know, they have no connection to the city of London. I just realized this might be confusing. http://www.londondrugs.com

  19. Used the Cine DS 10mm for wide shots in this old silly video. Also this still is grabbed from a frame using it. Both shot on the BMPCC

  20. DualPixel AF? I prefer MF. Counter feature carried over to new cameras: IBIS. Canon colors? The post-GH4 generation actually has quite decent color. Counter feature: mirrorless bells 'n whistles, 4K & exposure/focus aids and overlays on every camera. APS-C/FF VS 4/3"? Canon noise performance on the APS-C models isn't much better. And you can bridge the gap with bright wide lenses (crop/depth of field) and focal reducers. Counter 'feature': much smaller lenses can be used with each camera. That's about the 3 things that could make me say 'ah, yeah, well, Canon does this', yet aren't close to being dealmakers for me. What I couldn't do much about would be having Canon 2010-ish 1080p that isn't even actual 1080p... so yeah, for me Canon is far worse, pushing you towards the C-line up or 1D_ or FF bodies that are a couple 'o grand each or having to ML the shit out of your camera with tedious workflows. Panasonic does give you a lot with their cameras, just they make very distinct separations between each, which is actually a benefit to the consumer... camera is smaller, less complex, cheaper to make = cheaper to buy. You want the better features? You pay more. Just, acceptably more (imho), rather than Canon that really just takes the piss out of consumers that buy cheaper cameras but hardly get much added benefit over a 2010 T2i/550D looking at the quality of the results. But you know, to each their own.

  21. Don't underestimate how much heat is generated by encoding video, and how the bodies size factors into what features it gets.

    Best super 35mm camera?

What WOULD you get? Considering your channel is all about getting good deals, maybe you have something to recommend for the up to 4k price bracket for a ready to shoot package?

  23. Of course it's true. Actually as well for hardware, like the GX isn't intended to have CineLike profiles or an audio interface. So you're forced out of that category of camera if you want some more. Same goes for the G of course. They'll let it lack certain features making you ache for a GH. Though... atleast they do it in a sort of understandable fashion, like, from a business perspective. The segmentation game Canon is playing is far worse.

  24. I signed the petition about a year ago. I am happy to hear they got a response from Samsung. My question is would you guys be willing to trust Samsung again after leaving us hanging like this? and if not what kind of commitment would be needed from Samsung for you to trust them. For me, I would need to see a 2-3 year lens release roadmap schedule similar to what Sony did. It's not that I need a lot of lenses I just need to know they are committed to developing the line and that an NX3 would follow after the NX2. Actually, who am I kidding I like my NX1 so much I would probably buy an NX2 no matter what lol. I can only imagine if they made the NX2 today it would probably have some ridiculous specs like 4k 120p and 1080 @ 480

    Best super 35mm camera?

I think on paper the F3 beats it in about every way. Canon just might have the slightest edge in low light, not 100% certain on this. It all comes down to your preferences in image and Canon fanboys might tell you "Sony's color science is crap", but have in mind: You can do a whole lot more to a 10-bit 4:4:4 image than Canon's 8-bit 4:2:2. BTW This is coming from a Canon fanboy, that shoots 14-bit raw Just to cause some confusion.

    Best super 35mm camera?

@mercer You got me by the second Sony F3 BOOM! Ticks of all of your boxes and, if you are lucky, you can get away with a 4:4:4 version.

  29. You shouldn't be to hard on yourself. Hard to judge on a non HLG monitor ...but at first glance on a non HLG monitor it seems to have a similar problem as Vlog. It's indeed very hard to do as it doesn't react as you expect. And you end up with dull highlights. Probably easier on a HLG monitor

  30. For an advanced gimbal that can take 7lb (3kg), 759 is cheap.
