    Chicken

So all summer I've bene working on this short film, which is in the Sound Design/ADR/VFX/Scoring stage right now. It's the first really "serious" (as in made with the intention of submitting to festivals and not just dumped online) project I've done since my first feature film way back in 2009-2010. Chicken is a horror comedy about a woman named Brenda, who has fallen on hard times financially, and is working as a mascot sign dancer for a chicken fast food restaurant, Wally's Chicken. But her boss, Steve, is a pill-popping abusive lunatic who bullies and pushes her to perform up to the standard of the former beloved mascot, who has recently passed away. As the stress of her job mounts, Brenda begins to believe she is being stalked by Chicken mascot. Here are a few grabs: From the fake crappy local commercial that opens the film. The signs of the restaurant we filmed at still need to be replaced. Guinevere P.H. Dethlefson as Brenda Brandon Nebitt as Steve. Shot ont he Sony a6300 with mostly the Rokinon 16mm, and occasionally the Canon FD 35-105mm 3.5 zoom. It should be complete by the end of the year, and probably premiere next year. I may even share a private link here before it's premiere if there is any interest. Here's a little glimpse of some sign dancing:

    One Camera - For Life?

I mean if we are saying “one camera to rule them all forever” cmon guys... Arri Alexa!? Duhhhhh ? its been the one camera to rule them all for the last 8 years and doesn’t seem to be going anywhere even in this 4k world we live in. Crazy ness. But I guess if the question is, which camera THAT YOU CAN AFFORD would I pick... I guess I’d go with Digital Bolex :))))

  6. If the D5600 replacement gets full sensor 4K with focus peaking, then I'm buying it!

  7. Also bodes well for the D750 and D5600 replacements due next year

  8. Shallow DOF doesn’t have any drawbacks in of itself. It depends on the intended effect and the technical contingencies. Also, you might find your aperture control affects your depth of field more than sensor size. Try it. And, yes, historically, video camera sensors have been increasing in size. Right now it’s at super 35mm, which wasn’t a standard a decade ago (Red One came out 10 years ago). Alexa 65 and Red 8k are already full frame. It’s definitely going to happen in less than 10 years, and on the horizon are medium format sensors.

  11. Tried the latest release version of Resolve 14 (free version, will probably get the $299 version after this test). Added a bunch of video and audio effects to a Canon 1DX II clip (1080p, full frame): Pretty impressive performance on a 2010 MacPro and GTX980ti. Close to real time loaded with all these effects (easily realtime with basic effects / grading). Audio when not in the Fairlight panel is still 'clicky' after a few effects have been applied; guessing they're making video a priority and dropping audio samples to 'keep up'. A trivial linear interpolator could eliminate those annoying clicks; hopefully they'll fix that soon. Other than that, Resolve is looking really good. The stabilizer is faster than PP CC, and works much better. Their Film Grain and other locked/watermarked effects looked decent, will test them out after purchasing the app. 1DX II 4K 422 MJPEG also played butter smooth- first time I've seen this footage in real-time on this computer (state of the art PC plays these clips in real-time on GTX1080). Purchasing: when you click the Buy Now button, it takes you to the web, then shows a list of retail stores. It's also available in the Apple App store, however someone reported that the App Store version won't allow the use of 3rd party OFX plugins? Is there a dongle for the retail/box version? One thing I like about PP CC is the ease of use on multiple computers and OSes vs having to schlep around a hardware dongle and use up a USB port.

  13. Someone needs to explain that test from Tony I guess. The D850 has 3 auto white balance modes - 1. Keep absolute white 2. Normal 3. Keep warm ambient cast The A7R II in the test is shifted to the usual Sony zombie yellow with poor skin tones and warm whites are neither true white or orange - they are yellow! This is exactly what EOSHD Pro Color sets out to fix - and does. Don't use the default Standard Sony colour!! The GH5 in the test is under exposed or some other issue. It is doing a good job of getting the ambient temperature of the light in that room though, whereas the Nikon appears to be set to the first auto WB mode. This stuff should be mentioned at the very start of the test and the different options cycled through in the test as well... Otherwise people think it's a performance issue. It's not. It's a setup issue.

Don't see the point in the a7 series when if you just wait a few months more you can get the video focused a7S update instead! Aaaaaaarrrrrggggghhhhhh..... that audio is awful! Noise floor is way too high.

  17. True. Although I've never gone to an electronics store and seen a "real nice picture" on a TV. Oh, well I think I did once, but I suspect Philip Bloom had been there and already turned off all the extra bells and whistles. Thank you Philip!

A video 'style' but not a standard. Shallow DOF has lots of drawbacks as a film making device.

  19. I agree with this. The F3 is truly a beautiful image. The FS700 has excellent features, but from a purely image standpoint, the F3 looks much better. Depends what you're shooting 4K/120p is pretty awesome. If you shoot a lot of interviews, you may regret the FS700.

  20. A little rudimentary but I use this SD card holder. there are two sides to this thing and each side holds up to 8 cards. with a little red and green electrical tape I've labelled one side green for 'fresh' cards and the reverse as red for 'used' cards. I used to lose SD cards all the time but after using this simple case I haven't lost a card in months.

  21. I'm still not sure why Panasonic cameras (or Olympus) haven't implemented this, especially now with the increased CPU power. in the cameras. All the Panasonic cameras can punch in before pressing record with a simple click of a wheel.

  23. Because it's not supposed to be "to your liking", it's supposed to be as specified. There's a reason we have things like Rec709, etc. The TV should come with those set, then people can bend them to their liking (frame interpolation, contrast on max, etc.). I wonder how people feel who professionally color grade stuff for cinema when they see it played on consumer TV sets. People here hate on Sony because the colors aren't perfect and then think it's perfectly fine that TVs/computer monitors/mobile phones show everything completely distorted anyway? I'm still stuck with my 2008 Panasonic plasma TV that I setup as good as I could while using a display probe (incl. output LUT in Davinci Resolve, etc.). The picture is great and it tremendously decreases my pleasure of watching movies at my friend/family's places.

If I had to choose one, it would be the Minolta Rokkor MD 50mm f/1.4. Very compact, fast and sharp 50mm

  27. I usually deal with this situation, a lot of clients want a version for social networks. I've made 5 minute videos under 20 MB a lot. I use Handbrake to re-encode a high quality master from Premiere, my check list goes like this: 1. lowering the resolution of the image to 720p or even 480p 2. making the sound mono and lowering the bit-rate as much as possible depending on the content. 3. In Handbrake, there are two encoding modes, constant quality and specified bit-rate, with constant bit-rate, you can specify the size of the output file quite accurately but constant quality mode is more efficient so I use it and experiment with different setting until I get the required file size. 4. there is constant and variable frame rate options but I haven't experimented with them and don't know how much do they affect the file size or how reliable a variable frame rate file can be. 5. encoder levels and standards may need to meet a certain requirement depending on the platform that you are going to use the video on. Another way that comes to my mind is to upload your video to Vimeo and then download one of the lower quality re-encoder version that meets your file size requirements.

  29. Yeah I get it, I just believe that conversations sometime evolve and great information can be had from that evolution... so I guess I just don’t see the big deal if a side conversation occurs. But it’s not my forum, just my opinion.

  30. Hi Just because they are identical doesn't mean they are of course. A lot of manufactures will buy in NAND memory from wherever is cheapest, and even if the same they will be differing quality. In the same way Intel CPUs are mostly the same with the best off the production line running and sold at higher clock speeds, NAND works in a similar way. Also as the NAND is used and bad blocks are mapped out, the speed and reliability will vary. If it works and it isn't a V60/V90 card, it's a lucky find, buying the exact same again you may not be so lucky. V90 cards are using the cream of NAND memory and a different recording protocol to achieve a guaranteed minimum write speed regardless if the card is fresh out of the packaging or on it's 100 use. This is why they are more expensive and harder to come by. Regards Phil Hi Me neither, and the likely hood of the final output being All-Intra is next to none, even if there was a visible benefit, it wouldn't be delivered that way. Also IPB in the GH5 codec isn't really that long of a GOP, as usually just 24 or 60 group of pictures is used in the GH5 for a group, in comparison internet streams or higher compression rates will see 200 or more before a clean I frame. So cameras like the GH5 don't really suffer from motion issues caused by the compression anyway. Regards Phil

  31. Hi Good news, thanks for reporting back, and I've seen successes and failures reported on non V90 cards even if the speed rating suggests it would be okay, so it might be a luck of the draw a little bit. (My Sandisk V30 cards work fine with FHD at 200Mbits/sec but failed after 20 or 30 seconds at 400Mbits/sec for 4K but that was expected). I'd be inclined not to trust anything important to a non V90 card, but otherwise if it works it works. In terms of backup to two cards, Panasonic have stated in their manual insert update for firmware 2.0 that at least one card must be a V60 or better for the back up function to two cards. Good on Panasonic for not blocking non rated V60 or 90 cards which I thought they might have done, so the camera at least can have a best effort attempt at any card. Regards Phil
