  1. Ok, so how does that all add up? Simple, I started reading Andrew's site a few years ago and learned everything I needed to know about the Samsung NX1 and SLR Magic Anamorphot 1.33x adapter. I decided to use them on our first feature film. After numerous film festivals and special events our film, Black Luck, signed an International distribution deal with Indie Rights. Yes, we probably would have done the film without this knowledge, but I'm not sure it would have had the same look or feel. The camera and adapter worked amazingly well and proved that a no budget indie thriller can still have a high production value. I can't thank Andrew enough for educating me and so many other filmmakers about the possibilities of shooting a feature film with these great tools. Cheers! David P.S. If you want to check the film out, it just launched on Amazon Prime. Read the reviews as well. This isn't some masterpiece of cinema, but it is a satisfying movie created with passion. https://www.amazon.com/Black-Luck-Garrett-Sheeks/dp/B0764KD2K8/ref=sr_1_2?s=instant-video&ie=UTF8&qid=1507185936&sr=1-2&keywords=indie+rights

  2. Lol! You really think s35 was a standard created by Red? It was a standard film size for decades before that! DECADES. And ask your focus puller whether micro four thirds is easier to pull focus on than full frame. Go ahead, I'll wait.

  3. Hi, some boring evenings made me set up this page about some filmmaking and other diy stuff, quick and dirty solutions: https://www.facebook.com/Kitchen-Table-Solutions-223193894881928/ I´ll post things i had to do for shooting and fun. If you like, have a look, it´s just a hobby. Thanks

  4. I am sooo tempted to buy an a7s for its amazing lowlight 1080p and then some external 4K ProRes. But it’s still a few hundred away from a must buy for me. When I can get a like new one for $1000 or less, I’m on it. With that being said, I would stick with my 5D3, unless I could afford a C200 or an Alexa Mini. I’ve also been really impressed with a lot of the LS300 footage I’ve been seeing lately. I’m just waiting for an indie film to use that camera. I can’t believe nobody has yet. A friend of mine sent me this link and it looks amazing...

    One Camera - For Life?

I think people are overthinking this fun hypothetical exercise. I believe the point is... if tech stopped now and we were left with what is available now, then what would people choose based on what is on the market now.

  8. http://deadline.com/2017/10/ryan-gosling-blade-runner-2049-harrison-ford-opening-weekend-box-office-1202183063/ I've just seen it. Definitely not a fast paced action film. It's slow, brooding and very very tense. Roger's cinematography is his best work ever, and he'll get a Oscar for it. So many deft touches and changes mid scene to serve the story. It's a stunning looking film. Dennis Villeneuve slowed down the pace, focussed on a study of the characters above everything else. I'm still not 100% a Villeneuve fan but this is far more entertaining than Arrival. I am more impressed with the story and screenplay... It has many good ideas. Some genuinely original and untried. I think it will stand up to repeat viewings, it has the depth to go down as a bit of a modern classic. I just wish I was more a fan of the overall cinema experience of people munching stinking nachos in your fucking ear whilst talking constantly. (To be fair this isn't as common in Berlin as some other places but I lucked out and got to sit next to a dirty old corporation man on a date with his 18 year old intern)

    One Camera - For Life?

Exactly the same as now, A7s for me. Maybe I would add an A7sii and a A9 if money was no object but I would still be happy in a year or two as is. A7s is still about the best for low light for stills and video (unlike an Alexa), it has both FF and crop modes (unlike an Alexa), it adapts many lenses well (unlike an Alexa), it is quite small and I can take it and a few lenses on a plane as carry on (unlike an Alexa).

  12. Dude, just retire from all camera and color testing and shoot a feature film with whatever you just did there. I keep saying a modern day Mean Streets with your visuals would be awesome and this 80s film look is phenomenal!!! PM me the special sauce though. What iso did you shoot that at?

  14. "Like" The big bang theory includes the majority of shows on TV. But it doesn't matter, my point is that making a show as long as possible is bad advice. 2 hours is also bad advice. And calling 30min a minimum... is at least in my experience as a producer of all kinds of media also not a good rule to follow. Imo, A product is done when there is nothing left to take out. Not the other way around.

  15. I’m sick of waiting for it. Looking for a gh5 now. A7sii might become b-cam or trade it for a7rii
    1 point
  16. After some tests i figured this out. When you set GH5 to record 4K 60 fps, for some reason the shutter speed goes up to 1/30 sec and does not stop at 1/60 as it should. So if you accidentally set the shutter speed at 1/50 for example (as i did), then the camera records at 30 fps (it totally makes sense). In FHD 60p mode though the shutter speed can't be set at these values, it stops at 1/60, again as it should be to prevent mistakes. So be careful with the shutter speed setting when you are recording 4K 60 fps, it's different than shooting FHD 60 fps.

  17. Most TV-shows aren't even 30min. 30min is an eternity. 2h... nah. Average length people watch on youtube is about 4 minutes no matter the length of the content.

  21. Well start with this: Best price performance ratio. In that case I'd argue it was the Samsung NX1.

F11 on my MF digital back still has quite a shallow DOF compared to my smaller sensor cameras and means I have to shoot with high ISO or only in bright light - any advice on how I can resolve this now and in the future ?

  24. Tried the latest release version of Resolve 14 (free version, will probably get the $299 version after this test). Added a bunch of video and audio effects to a Canon 1DX II clip (1080p, full frame): Pretty impressive performance on a 2010 MacPro and GTX980ti. Close to real time loaded with all these effects (easily realtime with basic effects / grading). Audio when not in the Fairlight panel is still 'clicky' after a few effects have been applied; guessing they're making video a priority and dropping audio samples to 'keep up'. A trivial linear interpolator could eliminate those annoying clicks; hopefully they'll fix that soon. Other than that, Resolve is looking really good. The stabilizer is faster than PP CC, and works much better. Their Film Grain and other locked/watermarked effects looked decent, will test them out after purchasing the app. 1DX II 4K 422 MJPEG also played butter smooth- first time I've seen this footage in real-time on this computer (state of the art PC plays these clips in real-time on GTX1080). Purchasing: when you click the Buy Now button, it takes you to the web, then shows a list of retail stores. It's also available in the Apple App store, however someone reported that the App Store version won't allow the use of 3rd party OFX plugins? Is there a dongle for the retail/box version? One thing I like about PP CC is the ease of use on multiple computers and OSes vs having to schlep around a hardware dongle and use up a USB port.

  26. Someone needs to explain that test from Tony I guess. The D850 has 3 auto white balance modes - 1. Keep absolute white 2. Normal 3. Keep warm ambient cast The A7R II in the test is shifted to the usual Sony zombie yellow with poor skin tones and warm whites are neither true white or orange - they are yellow! This is exactly what EOSHD Pro Color sets out to fix - and does. Don't use the default Standard Sony colour!! The GH5 in the test is under exposed or some other issue. It is doing a good job of getting the ambient temperature of the light in that room though, whereas the Nikon appears to be set to the first auto WB mode. This stuff should be mentioned at the very start of the test and the different options cycled through in the test as well... Otherwise people think it's a performance issue. It's not. It's a setup issue.

A video 'style' but not a standard. Shallow DOF has lots of drawbacks as a film making device.

  29. This setup is really good for stability. The moment of inertia is moved so far away from the handle and with the lens in the middle, that it largely made up for my lack of OIS.

  30. To be clear, I'm kind of unintereted in actual documentaries. But some of my favorite fiction filmmakers have taken a lot of inspiration from them. I'll definitely mostly have to practice, but it's clearly an artform I could stand to learn more about from the pros. And thanks for all the input and resources so far

  31. Actually, the firmware update for the F3 wasn't US$900 but US$3,800 for s-log!! Crazy huh? It dropped down to US$900 for the update when the F3 needed to be more competitive in price against the new C300. Yeah, if you look back how far we've gone in 20yrs, or even just 10yrs, it makes it tough to predict what it will be like in another 20yrs! Let alone for the rest of time lifetime (which hope will be much longer than 20yrs!). Even though I expect the pace of technology to slow down for videography, just like it has slowed down for stills guys. (and so we see even the top notch guys skipping an upgrade cycle or two) But even in the stills world, you can see a big change across 10yrs, and a massive change across 20yrs. Well sh*t, my thousands and thousands of dollars in my lens investments is going to turn into pennies on the dollar?? Welll... it isn't going to happen within the next 5yrs! :-) Or I hazard even ten years. But in 25yrs, we might not see today's lenses the same way we see 25yr old lenses today. (I'd love to shoot on 25yr old Nikkors! And a nice collection can be quite valuable, but might a collection today's Sigma ART lenses be worth much much *much* less in 25yrs than we'd guess it would now?)

  33. Matt Price / Sound Rolling is my top recommendation: https://www.youtube.com/user/ThatWasSound The reason why? He is the *only* professional sound recordist on YouTub who is putting out regular and informative content in this niche!! (every other channel in this subject niche is either a brand instead, or a retail store, or a non-specialist) One last recommendation, and this one is ever so slightly biased.... *me*: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCniNTuAtkFiSCQNfIaw9SJw Although I have only a tiny tiny fraction of the amount of content that Matt Price has! Plus I haven't been doing it for anywhere near as long as he has.

  36. Not to mention that most people are not only unwilling to learn grading, but downright offended when you suggest that maybe their grade is the problem. A problem that affects 80% of us--not being colorists--is impossible to acknowledge without pissing people off. Isn't that insane? Some flat/log profiles, like C-Log (faux-log designed for 8-bit), Nikon's FLAT profile (not true log), and V-LOG L (I don't really know why) respond perfectly to nothing but an S-curve in post, but they're by far the minority cases and you're still thinning out your skin tones. People realized a while back that 10-bit ProRes (Blackmagic) and 12/14 bit RAW (Blackmagic and ML) held the key to great image quality, then 75% of us promptly forgot the second 4K hit the affordable market. The other 25% are blessed with an amazing gift: the power to remember things!
