  1. OK, I usually try to post on this forum only if I have information to share, but in this case I find it absurd that people expect every new camera to be a RED for less than $3000. People were shooting big budget features on shitty 8 bit 1080p when the 5DII came out and hailing it as the best non-film image ever. If you need more: Buy. A. More. Expensive. Camera. Get some perspective. Thank you.

  2. Personally I would choose the c100 mark 1 over an fs5 any day.

  3. For me the A7rIII is everything that I wished from an A7rII upgrade. These are just the improvements on the video side: Amazing AF from A9 Sgammut3.cine better low light performance lower rolling shutter EVF from A9 Better ergonomics At least double the battery life S35/FF switch with a button! Bright LCD during 4K recording USB3.1 tranfers Dual SD card Improved FF quality Improved IBIS Proxy recording! Personally I don't think there is any competition for Sony right now.

  4. Personally guys, I won't be buying one. You can bet the A7S III will blow it away for video. And the competition is huge... D850, GH5, Leica SL in particular.

  5. People upset about no updated video features.. what did you expect? The s-model cant be news to you?

  6. No 10bit and oh my god, we're still at a 100Mbps bitrate for 24p/30p 4K?!?! Goddamn Sony.. throw us a bone for video here.

  7. I shot on my A7s extensively for three years before upgrading to the II and I can't say that I was ever lamenting the lack of IBIS. Certainly, if it was a choice over IBIS or low light, I'd go wit low light personally (at least in the case of A7sII) despite the fact I agree with: It's a rare situation that I shoot over 3200ISO. Too much obsession with paper specs these days. That said, the sensor size of the A7sII is what secures it for me. And the benefit of its low light abilities is that you can shoot at 800, 1600, 3200 ISO very cleanly, not something you can do much on other DSLRs. That's a much more useful feature than being able to shoot a mess of noise at 409,500 ISO.

  8. Ok but this means nothing in terms of actual sales. The top 10 on b&h shows 8 DSLRs and two compacts. On Amazon under "Photo/Video" its still of course film (instax, keeps Fuji afloat) on almost all top spots. First digital interchangeable lens camera is a DSLR. If I look at "digital cameras" on Amazon its mostly DSLRs and compacts in the top 50. When I look at one of swedens bigger retailers the GH5 isnt on the list. And its not a price thing. There are several higher priced cameras at the top. The guy at my local store says Fuji is selling nicely. Not like Canikon but still alot. Panasonic isn't as popular. And sadly Olympus is a tough sales for them. Ive never seen a GH5 used by a video crew, TV-team, pro photographer or even by a tourist. So saying that the GH5 is cutting sales from dedicated video cameras like the c100, FS7, etc doesn't ring true to me. In fact, when reading Sony and Panasonics financial reports its pretty obvious they are loosing money on their cameras. If they where selling like hot cakes they might have broken even. Fuji isn't making much either since their film sales finance their digital camera losses. But rumors says that Sony is releasing their first proper and uncensored financial report next year. Then we will know if they are doing better these days. My guess is that they still loose money on every mirrorless interchangeable lens camera they sell.

    Forum guidelines

These are not hard rules but I have some suggestions for making the place easier to read and less cluttered... 1. Please don't quote an entire post or topic as the next reply directly underneath... We know you're replying to it, we don't need to see the same big post repeated 2 times in a row.... If your post is on the same page, people usually see the content you're referring to and the context. If there's a big post with 6 images for example, and you quote it in the very next reply... think about how stupid that looks to the reader. 2. Please try to avoid putting signature text in the main body of your post like "CTB Approved". Put it in the signature of your account profile. That way, it can be formatted separately (smaller, with divider) to the main post text in keeping with the forum design - easier to read for us all. 3. This is a place to discuss camera gear, filmmaking and films! If the main purpose of your account is to promote a service, product or another blog or YouTube channel, then it will be deleted. I want to see real people, with great posts like Mattias Burling, actual organic users with things to say and not a heavy bias or promotional bias towards one thing, or one brand. 4. This forum prefers people who post under their real name, rather than the name of their channel, online presence or a nickname. 5. If your topic is a question please search first before posting it, so regular visitors don't have to read the same questions every day that have already been answered before. 6. If a rumors site posts news, link to the ORIGINAL SOURCE of the news, NOT the rumors site. Save us all the bother, go direct to the source and bypass all those ads. 7. If you are selling products and services that rival EOSHD's, I will allow it only at my discretion. Charging $100 for a picture profile I don't like, that is of low quality and in direct competition with my own, is a certain ban. 8. Please be civil to myself and the mods - because we're here every day and getting heckled everyday isn't what I run this site for! It's the quickest way to get banned. 9. I am all for blunt, non-politically correct chat, banter and forthright opinions, just be respectful of each-other 10. Post good stuff that starts a discussion... leave the boring stuff to the other sites These are guidelines not the law... I will as always be casually keeping an eye out for people who flout multiple guidelines regularly as I want to maintain the quality of the community for the regulars. Cheers!

  12. Not much of an upgrade here, now very curious to see what the A7SIII brings. That, or just stick with a A7RII

  13. mk1 is from a different generation, mk2 was the current one when the FS5 was released. If we want to talk about older secondhand cameras, then we need to include the likes of the Sony F3 or FS700. Which I'd take over a C100 any day. But yes, the C100 is still an excellent camera (their being better cameras doesn't change that) which can be an absolute workhorse (heh, just last night I did a shoot which had the C100 as one of our cameras).

  14. Very interesting opinion from someone so young as @kidzrevil, and I completely agree. I can see that in younger people's edits as well, while I like to edit on a slower pace -as for the brain to comprehend and process information- I see people edit 5 shots in 1-2-3 seconds! I seriously can't follow, or understand what is going on most of those while I have noticed a better visual communication between them than oral. For me, the opening scene of Satantango is one of the brilliant way ever. Cows moving for 10 full minutes!

  16. This is an issue with Panasonic’s Log profile and the only reason the GH5 got 10bit video. VLog with the GH4 was a nightmare but to compete with Sony, and even Canon to some extent, Panasonic needed a Log profile, so they used tech from their cinema division in the GH5. Unfortunately, now every videographer in the world, despite their discipline or skill level, believes if they don’t get 10bit color, they’re getting ripped off. Panasonic jumped the gun by one or two product cycles and that is good for GH5 owners, but the other manufacturers shouldn’t be held liable for Panasonic’s inability to get a Log profile that worked within an 8bit space. And at this point, for the money, if I wanted more than 8bit color, I’d go with a BM camera for the better codec and DR or a 5D3 with ML Raw for 14bit and a good color science... which is one of the reasons I did. And I’d definitely choose higher DR 8bit over 10bit. And the only reason I mention it is because there is this misconception that Panasonic gave the consumer 10bit color out of the kindness of their heart because they care about videographers and low budget indie filmmakers, yet Canon and Sony are heartless corporations that only care about their bottom line... they all only care about their bottom line and a Log profile was needed in the GH series to help theirs.

  18. I was hoping that it would have a fully articulating screen that comes out to the side (like Canon and Panasonic often use). The flip up above or down below screens you see on some other Sony cameras don't play well with mounting the camera on a tripod or having a mic in the hotshoe. Wonder if this is something they would also add to a potential A7S III. I was surprised to see they've added 2x usb inputs so you can charge and also plug in an intervalometer. Though the bigger Z series battery would also help when doing longer timelapses or video.

  19. Bit of a "yawn" release for video shooters. Also I don't think the A7SIII will get 10 bit. I'd expect full 120fps in 1080p, 4k 60p and better autofocus.

  20. It makes no f’ing sense to me, whatsoever to offer S-Log 3 to people in 8-bit at 100mbps in 2017. We should be talking about banding like payphones.

  21. USB charging has been a feature on Sony bodies for a while now. I think that the mark II series was the first to allow charging while in use too, so many people used a power bank for longer shoots. Mark III has microUSB and USB-C and you use both to charge (depending on the cable you have available) or you can use one for charging an the other for some sort of camera control (intervalometer? tethering?).

  22. The biggest difference between these cameras and cinema cameras is battery life and storage. So now the A7R will last twice as long? It will have a USB port that can transfer 4K video as fast as a card reader? It has dual recording slots, FTP over wireless, proxy recording? 10fps silent mode shooting. If this camera camera out a few years ago the title of the post would be "Sony just killed the Canon C100"

  23. FINALLY!!! I grabbed my Samsang NX300 this morning for the first time in ages and the battery was flat, but not a big deal! Didn't need to find a charger, could just grab any one of my many many USB cables I have lying around and charge up the NX300! Very useful. (and this is not even counting the handy feature of using it with a USB powerbank, as an external battery) Made me wish that every camera had USB charging, why isn't this common place with all cameras??

  24. i get it, but some people were expecting an s update today. now it's up in the air again. And gh5 seams the only viable option for video now.
    1 point
  25. yes. But the full frame look and low light remain the main features you would still dream about a7s mark3. I can only imagine how a 10 bits better codec low light full frame image would look like, just saying.

  26. Eh, it's not a bad upgrade per se, but it does kinda give the impression of something hurriedly put out to compete with the D850. Then again, Sony's really been killing it with just about every new mirrorless for the last few years, so I guess they had to stop and catch their breath sometime.

  27. Interesting. Looks like they're working on making the R primarily for photos again, and hopefully, the SIII will see actual proper improvements for video. Or not, and I have 0 reason to upgrade, which will also make me happy.

  28. so, again, no A7s mark3 wonder how much do we have to wait for it to come. A7r mark3 is here and looks promising but hardly an a7s 2 replacement for video. what do you say?

  29. So A7S III will also not have 10bit. Sony is becoming the new Canon. Seems my 5DIII(ML) will still remain my backup body for my ump for quite some time. The good news is that I dont have spend cash on body's the next year

  30. Well, seeing as this thread is titled "...addressing some of the myths around..." let's address some of those with the GH5/MFT! Should stating "lowlight" be enough to rule out the GH5? Of course not! Because it is very likely the GH5's lowlight capabilities is sufficient for the asker's needs. It is good to remember some historical context, remember how excited everyone was about how good the 5Dmk2 was in lowlight? (a camera which I don't regard as superior to a GH1+speedbooster combo) Of course now the 5Dmk2 is seen as being "bad" in lowlight by 2017 standards. But then again the MFT world hasn't stood still either since the original MFT camera the GH1 either, which each model (GH2/GH3/GH4/GH5) taking strides forward in improvements in lowlight since the previous model (that is a lot of steps of improvement! We're up to the GH5 now). Look at this shot at night with the old Panasonic GH2 for instance with only practical lighting: Is it perfect? No. Is it unacceptable? No. I think in this day in age, there is no reason in 2017 to be against any of the current cameras due primarily to its low light capabilities. Unless you're in some niche scenario, such as say you are doing a one man doco of homeless people living in underground sewers?! But even then, I'd happily use say my D5200 with a Sigma 18-35mm f1.8, if that is all I had available to me.

  32. Radical alternative thought: don't buy another camera! :-o I know, it sounds sacrilegious, but it isn't so crazy. Especially if you're just an occasional amateur, then I'd recommend you sit out another round or two of camera upgrades. However, if you're a professional who is out there getting paid with shoots 3 to 10 times a week, then yes it could start to make more sense to consider an upgrade.

  33. My "next system" will need to be 8k@30, 4k@120, 2k@460, apsc or bigger, 10-12bit at all the resolutions, with very high bitrate (over 200) and h.265, in a packaging with the size of nx1 and a cost of 2k$ for the body at most. And a good selection of outstanding, yet affordable, af lenses. I think I'll have to wait several years, since Samsung is no longer in the game.

  34. I predict a 300 2.8 and 400 2.8 at a gazillion dollars each (and worth every cent IF you can afford them). That said, the sensor in my crystal ball was made by Sony so I could be wrong.
