I dont buy any of the resolving power talk. Marketing...2 points -
OK, I made one more test with the tokina 11-16mm. The shots are not labelled, but they are in order 11,12,13,14,15,16mm as written on the lens, with image stabilizer, and 6k anamorphic. The 13mm does not show any vignetting, except for a very short time in upper right corner when panning.2 points

Sony A7R III announced with 4K HDR
Emanuel reacted to Prefabsprout for a topic
We are now coming at an dead end in the camera business, the same happened in the music industry..when cubase and pro tools and what ever programs hit the roof with 32 bit. It´s all up to the the musicians, not the gear.1 point -
Resolving power means too little when sharpness can be a step further counterproductive -- contradictorily worse than crappy glass; or almost that (only 'cause you're speaking to a freak glass lover dude, so respect applies LOL ; ) well, glass is the sensitive link of the chain, the determinant factor. Everything in the realm of the pictures is perception. Sharpness can damage all that game. The fine example is when you end to use the -5 sharpness setting to set up your 4K acquisition on your GH5. Coming from overprocessing. It happens that resolving yadda yadda may end to pee on your parade. :-)1 point

Sony A7R III announced with 4K HDR

It seems you two have never experienced a truly sharp lens. 1080 through a sharp lens can easily look better than 4K through bad glass. I've experienced this many times. Please get your hands on a new tamron or sigma 85 and compare it to the Canon 85 1.2 and you'll see just how much difference resolving power really means.1 point -
Well hello there EOSHD forum readers, I've just posted my short film, Axiomatic, to Vimeo. Shot with an older version of the 5D3 Raw hack without the audio component - remember when we had to reload the Raw modules each time after restarting the camera? Ah well...it still worked flawlessly and I cannot thank all the ML developers enough for what they unlocked. 5D3 raw is simply amazing. Spanish, French and English subtitles are available for whomever needs them and viewer discretion may be advised as there is brief nudity, violence and coarse language. However I tried to make everything as tasteful as possible. Hopefully you can take some time out of your busy day to view it and please feel free to share it with any of your friends or contacts that might enjoy some dark Canadian cinema. Resolving power is BS... It is more prone to have to add some softness to get better outcome than anything else. Put your eyes on vintage glass and stop to worry about nothing :-)1 point

No, they are more expensive, that's all... :-)1 point

GH5 Firmware 2.1 bug - Records for 1s
Orangenz reacted to Fritz Pierre for a topic
I agree with @Orangenz on this...it's very easy to do...I have a little Olympus TG5 where you can only trigger video from the movie button and it's always user error on my part....(1) there is a way to test for this...stop and start on the camera at home until you fill up the cards..3 second clips...trigger record from the main shutter release button, not the little movie button....if you can repeat the problem, you can contact Panasonic...(2) this is perhaps the most important....roll for a few seconds on EVERY take before action....that's what was done in the days of film when 5 seconds cost real money, but it allows sound to sink, everything to get up to speed and most importantly, you get to see that the camera is running properly for that take...it's good practice on any shoot and you get the take every time.1 point -
This lens is rumored to cost 1500€ in my country, while the similar Canon is 800€. The 70-200 starts from 2500€ the Canon 2000€. Are these lenses so much better than Canon ones?1 point

Blade Runner 2049 bombs at box office
Chrad reacted to fuzzynormal for a topic
Well, you have every right to ngaf about that movie. Unfortunately, it was the one that created a lot of the cinema vocabulary we still use. I suspect other films would've come along and done the same eventually. (Eisenstein really cranked it up a notch) It's too bad BOAN was that one to lead the way. In that regard I'm not sure you can say there were other films to reference. As you're aware, history is often defined with endless bad actors and disturbing human cruelty. It's truly a shame that early cinema has that stain, but nevertheless, there it is. BTW, that racist kkk culture was aggressively invigorated by the post civil war backlash of egalitarian reconstruction. Bad mojo feeding off a noble progressive effort. ...more examples of humanity's sad ying/yang dance. But if a shit cultural movie like BOAN can get made and we can scrape some goodness off it's shoe, better that than to pretend it never existed. I know you don't want to talk about BOAN, but I'm aiming at a higher concept. Indulge or ignore it, as you wish. BTW, take ear plugs to BR2049. Seriously.1 point -
Sony A7S Mark 3 - What to expect

All set for what? this is 7000euros between 2 mirrorless cameras. With lenses, one needs 14.000 in total for a whole set of Sony equipment for photo and video. I think I will skip that and stay for another couple of years with my NX1 and 8 lenses that cost less than half of 4 Sony lenses, 28mgpxls photography is good for most jobs anyway, and I can save some weight and size in my bag with my crop lenses and bodies. Also, we don't know the S's specs yet.1 point

Sony A7R III announced with 4K HDR

Morning boys! Most important future of camera is colour science, motion cadence and dynamic range. Lets say that this Sanyo has good DR but so what if the colours in 8bits look like plastic zombie land. No thanks jeff! Why would someone buy this over used 1DC is beyond me. Best affordable choices are, 5d mk3 (really a legendary classic with 14 bit vista-fuarking-vision size sensor and best colour science), 1DC (unbeatable 4k image, best body ever) and LEICA SL which used has fallen under 5K. Honorary mentions go to Fuji xpro2. Fuji is the only camera maker apart of LEICA and Canon that has charisma and character. GH5 has great features but the sensor size is a joke sorry, footage looks like iphone 7 video srs, but I guess it's alright to do the job for some. Buying the speedboosters and adapting other lenses is let's face it cumbersome and ridiculous and no one should to invest in lenses with electronics (like native mft). Sony, A6500 A7smk2 etc, oh boy, worst ergonomics, HORRIBLE colours (yes, they are never quite right), bad looking high iso srs. From sony F35 and f55 is noyce. Nikon, oh boy d850 maybe does look good on paper, but they even don't make they own sensor, not to mention the goofy buttons and ergonomics, and modern Nikon lenses look crap. Nikkor did really well with AIS lenses but that's it If you have more money just get the new jooouicy C200 or used c500, next step is ARRI AMIRA. REDs have amazing specs but that digital look is not nice, ARRI buldozers over RED sorry. I think that best possible look can be achived with ALEXA (or believe it or not with 5Dmk3 RAW) with old Cooks or vintage Panavision Anamorphics das it. Sony comes and goes with new A7xx and A6xxx, ultimately there are boring and unimaginative, and how is it possible to make camera with (claimed) 15 stops of DR and such disgusting colours and then put it in 8 bit. Just buy Canon or Leica srs1 point -
I'm awfully sorry, but all my tests above are flawed. I had the HOYA SUPER HMC PRO(1) SKYLIGHT(B) filter on, and it causes some additional vignetting. I'll see when I could do another round of tests for publishing.. The LENS HOOD that comes with the lens vignettes more, so that is useless. I was planning to get a set of 82mm ND filters, and use those with a step-up ring, but I seriously doubt that now. Maybe I should get 10cm square filters, but I have no experience with those. Suggestions?1 point

Axiomatic - 5D Mark III + ML Raw short film

@EmanuelI did not keep my test...also I only tested in 16x9, but lastly and perhaps most importantly, I really do not move a camera much...so I used IBIS instead of a tripod...I would only ever pan if I was following an actor...and strictly narrative, so for my purposes the XL is a no brainer....an extra 1/3 stop...huge if you're looking at the difference above 3200iso and the widest FOV...I can always crop a little in post if need be, and still have the extra speed from the XL over the Ultra...I posted this in another thread on the 2 speedboosters.1 point

Canon XC10 4K camcorder
Lamplighter55 reacted to BenEricson for a topic
I couldn't take it and had to buy the camera again. So stoked to mess around with this camera again. I found some cool footage shot with a wide angle today. When zoomed through it looks like you can achieve shallower depth of field as well. Around 4:26 the stuff shot with the Wide Angle.1 point -
Improving GH5 colour - comparison with 5D3 RAW
PannySVHS reacted to hyalinejim for a topic
Yes, the GH5 is second. For sure, the 5D files have much more malleability than 10bit VLog. You can really go to town on Magic Lantern RAW - it's a much thicker file. It's almost pristine (except for ugly shadow noise). But I think that it is actually a testament to the GH5 that I can do that. And what I've presented here is only the realisation of my preferences. The point that I want to make is that the 10bit 422 files are robust enough to undergo a fair bit of colour correction / grading. To me, the VLog coming from the camera is a "raw" material with massive potential, as the (properly) RAW footage from the 5D3 is a beginning, and not an end in itself. In the main GH5 thread you mentioned that there was a range of quality in the posted videos for the GH5, from video-ish to something more satisfactory. Believe me, if Magic Lantern RAW was accessible to the same kinds of users - and in the same numbers - as the GH5, you'd see a hell of a lot of bad 5D3 ML videos. Exactly. You need 12 nodes or 20 minutes work to match this with that. But when the groundwork is done, you're in business. Today I made a nice lut that combines the Canon-like colour with a Lightroom film emulation preset. I loaded this into the camera as a monitoring lut and exposed until it looked good in the viewfinder. Came back and slapped the lut on and each shot was perfect. It took as long as it does to Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V.... with maybe a small WB and curves adjustment beforehand This is the look that I'm into at the moment. In a year's time I might be into something different. Big time!1 point -

I love it, gorgeous image and colors. I was taking out some old b-roll for my latest YouTube video the other day. And it wasn't the first time I went, "Wow! Which camera did I shoot this on?" and it turning out to be the XC10.1 point
