Who's running High Sierra?
deezid and one other reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
Wow I thought Premiere was a piece of unreliable shit in the last version of Mac OS. It's even worse in High Sierra!! Avoid this upgrade like the plague if you rely on Adobe Premiere.2 points -
Twinkle flare either caused by micro scratches on Kowa or taking lens (or both). Test taking lens first to see if present...if not, then you know it is the Kowa. You can usually tell if an Anamorphic has any micro scratches by putting on a ‘clean’ taking lens and freehand rotate it while pointing at a strong light source. If the twinkles rotate...there is your answer. Micro scratches are usually bad news on rear of lens elements, but a few on the larger front optic usually don’t impact too badly. Your example pics also show some glow, indicating either a load of fine micro scratches or light mildew on At least one of the optics. white veiling glare can indeed caused by light hitting optic edge of front element, blackening the edge will eliminate that...or simply use a lightweight rubber lens hood to control the off-axis light from entering the lens. It could also be caused by the taking lens partially flaring, when it’s flare is being clipped by the Kowa choking the light path.2 points

Get the GX80/85, really good bang for buck! Bought my 2nd used GX80 for $274,61 (Converted from SEK). There's one for sale right now, in Sweden, for $417 which includes 12-32 + 35-100 + a wooden grip.1 point

Best All Purpose Camera under $300!?
webrunner5 reacted to PannySVHS for a topic
Lumix G7 with nice HD and 4K(UHD), if you can find one for under 300, then G6, which you can even find for much cheaper. Great video qualiy and usuability. Usuability is best by far for the price. A6000 has a sensor close to S35 Film, so using lenses give the same view as on S35. On Lumix one has to use focal reducers to get the same fiel of view (FOV) with the same lenses as on S35. Myself, I am using Lumix cams with focal reducers, because the video quality is so nice. They are nice for photos as well. Like I said, very nice to use with swivel screen, mic in, nice grip, EVF, good battery life and so on. You should be able to find a G7 with all that and UHD video for around 300, but for 350 for sure. Oh, and G7 has much better HD than GX85 btw.1 point -
This - @jonpais: "... one of the most colorful times of the year in Vietnam; so I chose to shoot in B&W because of my contrarian nature." (As wrote by, for example, Mark Twain - Thumbs up, mr Huck Finn!)1 point

I just see this technology as an addition to gimbal work. Almost a safety net if your gimbal shot screws up. And that’s perfectly fine.1 point

@jonpais, Hey Jon, I have to repeat, what others have been stating. Your Fuji footage looks awesome, the few color parts are kicking all 8bit cams in the tush too. Very impressive, espially ooc. By the way, that style of shooting and editing was really super cool. I think your best so far, up with the best vignettes I have seen on the web. Not talking about the hyperstylish Watchtower of Turkey style, which i recognize as impressive achievement but do not enjoy that much really, but the rather classic approach. Really nice editing too, like you have been watching Tony Zhous essay film about editing as an imspiration right before editing:) Would love to see some Fuji Acros BW footage with an orange filter on btw.1 point

As someone who does post stabilization all the time I can tell you there are some things you just cannot remove in post. As good as this may be it is not going to ever be as good as a true gimbal. Sure you can use 1/100 shutter to reduce the issues but it looks terrible unless you want it to look like a video game. Never rely on warp stabilization, I will come back to bite you at one point or another.1 point

I usually do not use any bitrate hack. I prefer NOT over heating my sensor, to use less cards, cheaper, and not super expensive ones, and to squeeze more power from my batteries. These 3 are some of the greatest benefits of the NX1, and not one mirrorless is better than NX1. GH5 is equally good in heat management, but to achieve this is bigger and +50% heavier than the NX1, with a lot smaller sensor; also you need top speed cards and eats batteries quite a lot. I have noticed more heat in the camera, bigger battery consumption and of course bigger files with the hack, and I decided that if I need a different tool, I just use/rent a different camera. For the price range and it's tier, NX is still great and top in some aspects (as the ones mentioned earlier, plus ergonomics, some great lenses, megapixel count, 120fps, 15fps photography, SAMOLED monitors, etc). My impression is that there is a slight improvement from 120-160mbps (never went above that) and for smaller projects, it probably worths the extra GBs, but it ain't 10bit, not 4:2:2, you don't even gain better low light performance (biggest NX disadvantage vs newer APS-C cameras). Bitrates and specs do not tell the whole story. One of my favorite cameras to use and produce is the Canon C100mkII. Do you know it's bitrate?! There are a lot of posts with details, explanations, and tests, you should read some of that stuff. I would expect @Omer Sehayek above to notice some differences, probably on a more complex forest or sea scene. He can post one still from 80 and another from 180mbps, but I have the same card and I am not sure if it can reach as far as 220 WITH sound, but definitely I am not a mod/hack expert in anyway, on the contrary.1 point

Just picked up an mke600 up for 180 euro, can't really complain at that price1 point

Damn Jon, put away that GH5 for a little while and pick up that X-T2. That Acros looks epic. If you throw on a little grain it will look like early press footage from the Vietnam War. Also please test out some 1080p ProRes F-Log with your BlackMagic Video Assist. I’ve been looking for a second camera... maybe I should have a second look at the X-T20. Acros and Takumar lenses could be a killer combo.1 point

This is not advertised for normal circumstances, rather, extreme circumstances. I believe it crops more, yes. And yes, wait for the reviews of a release version, if it is ever released. A lot is from interaction with the company over many years with great periods of no communication or false release info or status. New people are coming on board and there is literally zero difference in status or videos from many years ago when first put forward and the old guard have given up. ^^ this1 point

Ahh, still love my G6, what a fun camera! GM1 is a beauty. I think it´s the prettiest Panasonic camera. If it only had a little wheel on the back like GF1, G6, etc. have. If only my GF1 had that beautiful HD the GM1 has:) GF1 is another beautiful, classic looking camera. Weird, how details make a camera a standout design classic.1 point

Lighting Kit for a short film.
IronFilm reacted to AaronChicago for a topic
I would recommend Aputure as well. The 300d, and 120d/t lights are extremely versatile. They can be transformed from a fresnel, to an area, to a large soft source - thanks to the bowens mount. If you're shooting mostly indoors you could get away with 2 of the 120s. Maybe add a couple of Quasar Science 4' dimmable tubes. You can literally gaff tape those to a ceiling or wall for backlight/fill.1 point -

Look into aputure ls 1s, aputure 300d and some quasar science crossfade tubes. I also own a miniflo (from kinoflo) set for lighting in cars.1 point -
Yeah WTF is this? $1700 and it doesn’t even have the 200mbps 1080p?!?! The pricing of their camera lines make no sense. This is a $1200 camera at best.1 point

SteadXP is finally out
IronFilm reacted to zerocool22 for a topic
Yeah for DSLR's etc i kinda agree. But when you look at cinema cameras. And you want to do some handheld walking shots, and dont have the time or the right equipment. This might come in handy. Like running around with a Alexa (+-9kg), you would need to have a good vest + arm + steadycam. It weights alot + takes quite some time to set up + you need a experienced operator. So sometimes you go handheld instead to save time and your back. And this might be a handy addon (not sure until I have seen some raging reviews on it). I am not saying you should do this over a glidecam/gimbal, it will never be as good. But for those times that you need to shoot handheld (but I would surely account for the crop, and shoot a bit wider).1 point -
I love this type of post, and the Internet / camera forums in general. We go from arguing over how great a camera is going to be, to unboxing videos and camera lust / jealousy, to the inevitable honeymoon is over phase so quickly. So in lieu of shooting something reliable and proven, we put loupes on our Sony bodies, worry about overheating, worry if the Metabones adapter is going to not work, drag around ND filters and step up rings, external mics, remember to overexpose 2 stops in log mode so we can squeeze 1/5 of a stop of extra dynamic range just to spend hours later grading footage of our....cats. All while trying to avoid banding skies, black hole suns (Soundgarden anyone?) and instead of actually ENJOYING shooting a nice crisp 1080p signal (like my FS700) and worrying more about content - before we hit record we're trying to remember what our "knee" setting was for test shot #1047. Hey, I'm one of you too. Having gotten a proper ND filter / good built-in audio / slow motion FS700 the past few days I've just been shooting everything. Mostly not even slowmo stuff - and (oh the horror) not $5000 adapted Cooke glass - I even tried the 18-55 Sony kit lens - which smoothly autofocuses and face tracks my subjects. I locked the iris, set the ISO gain limit and just hit record. Looking now for cool low angled shots, framing, keeping my subjects (my family) the focus and not the settings. More "keeper" footage in 3 days non stop shooting than 4 months with the 1dc. But, I am one of you - always on the quest for the best. But at some point we are going to have to remember there is *no* perfect camera, nor will there ever be. DSLR's will probably never have true built-in ND, XLR inputs (save the GH4 and the clunky poorly-powered YAGH), smooth AF in video mode and colors right out of the camera (and dynamic range) that we all like. Camcorders will never be small, take exception stills, nor have the stealth factor. I walked around Halloween with the FS and at least 3 people asked me if I was with the news. At the baseball games with the 1d + 300 2.8 they asked if I was with Sports Illustrated. Sigh. /ramble off.1 point
