  1. Our friend is back. It's interesting to get a pov from a guy that uses and owns all 3 cameras. He he basically said what we all know... NX1 isn't best at anything but very good at everything (but lowlight). Seems if he was forced to pick one for all his video+ photo needs. NX is it.

  2. I have used those 3 cameras, and the GH5 extensively for video work (even for TV shows). I would take the NX1 any day of the week. It is amazing how NX1 is still one of the best hybrids in the market, in my opinion, the best HYBRID (a camera 50% for photos and 50% for video), as A7r cameras are photo orientated, A7s video, Sony APS-C lack pro body and features, Fuji is still mostly photo orientated (they are missing a ton of video features vs the NX1), GH5 is obviously video centric etc etc Also, there is a tendency for higher and higher prices, that makes me reluctant to invest to more hardware right now. The big changes will come with the adaptation of the HDR standard in the next few years, but right now the industry has competing standards and technology, so I wouldn't worry about that, yet. As I have said already many times, no one ever has asked me for 4K delivery, which isn't the same as HDR delivery, but you can imagine that HDR - which is brand new, will take a few good years to be the norm in video productions. The only issue I face, is the fact that Samsung is not a player in the industry, so I have to work with a lot of different brands, and I can't "sell" my equipment for jobs or projects with other people directing/producing. Funny thing: in early summer, a camera operator (he uses only Canon D5 and series Cameras) did 3rd camera on a performance coverage I produced, and I gave him the NX1. I explained a few things, and he did his job. He called a couple of weeks ago and asked for the camera because "I liked that little GH4 a lot"! He didn't even understood it was a Samsung, after me mentioned it 4-5 times!

  4. Oscar SoundTech Lavs is the usual low budget recommendation. It is a non-issue. And as you can see the reviewer in the end goes with Sony, as they're the way of the Future. (G3 really needs to be updated to a G4 I reckon)

  5. Ummmm.... sorry to rain on your parade.... But... What if on December 15 they just put out a Firmware update??? Sure, there are patents and prototypes out there... But, isn't it a bit stupid of any company to announce anything 10 days before christmas and/or boxing day? I'm thinking of this particular scenario: Our spouses and/or partner may be thinking of buying you a GH5 for christmas.... and then you say.... no no wait for the December 15 announcement.... then you say... I want a GH5S.... then your partner asks.... when is that going to come out? In February/March.... OH.... Spouse/partner buys you a tie or mug for Christmas.

    VLC and Windows 10

I am using https://mpc-hc.org/ which is an open source media player, which I found excellent. I haven't used any VLC since going to Windows 10. How's the Aero by the way? I am reading excellent reviews, but I just bought (in the summer, actually) an Asus GL502, as the Aero series wasn't even available in my country.

  8. Well, let's not to say the overarching concept is worthless. Perhaps it's poorly made in this instance, but a delve into the darker tendencies of human psyche is often compelling, obviously. Most motion picture entertainment in general is ultimately about "man's inhumanity to man."

  11. bernie is a great man and a fine old school movie film camera and lens repair guy. he has rebuilt more bolex moller than anyone alive today more than 6 just from me. he is quicker than all the big companies around the bolex moller is treasure the grease needs replacing and he can tune up the x y alignment. what can delay things is sometimes retention lock screws can get seized up so they need to be worked loose over time. sending something like moller to a regular repair guy is a sick idea . some of my lens i had where owner damage or attempted repair 3 where in pieces all where rebuilt in less than a month from scrap bits and bobs to lovely usable condition. bernie and his wife can answer any of your questions by email or telephone

  12. It would be ironic if this new GH5 was a more 'stills' oriented camera with a higher MP count and reduced video capability.

  15. Hey, CFL can look pretty gruesome.. Sometimes it can be very nice to have a bit of illumination in the background as well. So if practicals at hand and if logical, they can be used to nice effect. I would suggest tungsten light for being cheap and reliable. Bounce it off a bedsheet f.i. to soften it to your likeing. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DIMMER-BUILT-IN-VIDEO-STUDIO-CONTINUOUS-RED-HEAD-LIGHT-800W-LIGHTING-TUNGST-RHK/281927016626?epid=687099510&hash=item41a428e0b2:g:fF0AAOSwnLdWs1PQ Here is a nice guide for a quick setup utilizing indirect bounced light and ambient background light. It´s can come very handy and with appealing effect for an interview to have a light falloff from you subject to the background. Maybe some other people can chim in to comment on the CFL part of things. this one is very fun and quick to watch with some basic principles one can utilize:

  17. Number 1 legit German camera tech sit slashcam tested the EVA1 throughout. They call it the possibly best sub 10000 camera available and a hit to come. For the people wondering about 8 and 10 bit difference of c200 and EVA1 codec, here is a comparison of a shot they pushed 5 stops in post: https://www.slashcam.de/images/texte/1637-CanonC2008Bit5stopsUNder-CanonC2008Bit5stopsUNder.jpg https://www.slashcam.de/images/texte/1637-EVA10Bit_5stopsunder-EVA10Bit_5stopsunder.jpg https://www.slashcam.de/images/texte/1637-C200_12Bi5stopstUnder-C200_12Bi5stopstUnder.jpg Canon 8bit with 148mbit, EVA 10 bit with 150mbit, Canon Rawlite with 1000mbit.

  19. Guys,...this should blow your minds: Sony A6500 vs. (potential) "GH5-S" Physical sensor size and pixel count; - Sony A6300/6500 (Sony IMX284) 24.3mp APS-C (593mm2) - GH5-S - (Sony IMX294) 11mp Micro 4/3 (373mm2) ______________________________________________________ Average photosite (pixel) size; - Sony A6300/6500 = 593/24.3mp = 24.4 - GH5-S = 373/10.3mp = 36.2 Compared together = 36.2/24.4 = 1.48x LARGER pixels on this "GH5-S"! This Sony STARVIS IMX294 sensor "should" easily out perform the A6300/6500 in low light conditions. This does not even take into account the "quad pixel+ dual shutter speed" HDR modes that nobody understands yet. This only thing that we are going to lose is the lovely 5k oversample that we all love in the GH5 today :-( WOW!!!!!

  20. I may be biased, but I think Fuji should get me to try out the upcoming X-H1 before it's released. I asked to try the 4K X-Pro 2 firmware and they told me it isn't something they 'do' ahead of release... I am sure they do in fact have beta testers of their hardware, outside of the lab. I would love to give them my feedback. It seems Fuji are relying on Sony's hardware, with their own spin on ergonomics and colour. This is a good thing... Even if the H1 will be basically the innards of an A6500 in a Fuji body, it will be nicer to use than the Sony. To really compete with Panasonic though, they need to go far beyond what Sony are doing. No 8bit-only codec for starters.

  21. I missed that argument... but now I'm convinced Seriously, I've found two emulations of X-t2 very pleasant, but comparing to 10bit HLG form GH5 they are, so to say, "thinner" - at the same way that base GH5 image is thinner than Canon C100 II and ML Raw. About ergonomy, base of only one day of my using Fuji X-t2 - I think that someone have to REALLY love Fuji to appreciate it over, say, GH5: with GH5 all of necessary settings and operation I have in 5 joystick FNs commands - which is at the moment, from my point of view, simply unbeatable. Grip of GH5 leave something to be desired, but X-t2 is, in the comparison, near non-existent.

  22. I have used a lot of cameras since the 90's, and the NX1 is the best ergonomically, XT2 doesn't even have touch screen. No crop on any mode or 120fps on NX1 also.

Fujifilm X mount cine lenses are supposed to ship this month,B & H are showing them in stock.http://www.fujifilmusa.com/press/news/display_news?newsID=881136 At just under US $4000 each and weighing around one kg a new more video orientated body seems quite logical.Hopefully no ten minute limit.

  27. How does NX1 AF compares to A6500 or Canon's PDAF? I was very excited about the this new panasonic as I'm about to invest into a new video system until I saw the rumors out of Fuji. With IBIS, etc. I'm only waiting for Nikon to leak their upcoming mirrorless wonder, to make my decision even more confusing since I own many nikon lenses.

  28. I’ll go one better than this... what if another manufacturer releases a camera that beats the GH5 in every way? Better handling, low-light, battery life, IQ, AF, stabilization... just crushes it in everything. Will that hurt the value of the GH5? Of course it will. It is a well established fact that the GH5 suffers from poor AF in video and low-light is not exactly the best. All GH5 owner purchased their cameras, so we all stand to lose some resale value. But after the next release of the new “best camera”, our current cameras will be no less capable than the day we bought them. Cameras are generally not an appreciating asset. If you wish to make money with them, you must do so by using them to create a product that then earns a return. Let me give you all a heads up... after you plop down money on the new GH5s, rest assured that a relatively short while after doing so, a new better camera will be released. One that addresses the shortcomings of the GH5s (or whatever model number). And yes, there will be shortcoming. If this bother you, don’t upgrade. You only realize the lost once you sell and lock it in. Why exactly is this a problem? As I recall there is only one camera manufacturer that ever promised not to release updates in a short timeframe. And that manufacturer is Canon. The irony of that is Canon are consistently given grief for not innovation rapidly enough. Yet the only way they could do this would be to release more regular updates. Also the model protection that Canon puts in place so that no model steps on the toes of another is constantly criticized. Yet in doing this they seemingly protect the value of each of their products. If you prefer Canons way of doing things, well buy Canon. They make great cameras. But if you want the latest and greatest features and tech, go with Sony or Panasonic.
