  1. Is it really that important? Unless you get a resolution boost (like with the a7S mk1) or a bit depth boost (such as GH4 or F3), then I don't see the point. Not a compromise I'd lean towards. And this why I struggle to see why people would prefer Sony over a Panasonic G80/G85. (ditto it kinda applies to the next tier up too, GH5 vs a7S/A7R series) Exactly!

  2. Well, Canon just launched 3 new video cameras with... HD only Great news in year 2018... HD for 1,900$: https://www.canonwatch.com/canon-announce-three-new-full-hd-camcorders-20x-optical-zoom-canon-x11-x15-vixia-g21/

  3. As an a6500 / a6300 / a600 user, a few things to think about: If you get an a6500 / a6300, then I would suggest that you strongly think about getting an a6000 as well as a B camera / 1080p camera. The 1080p out of the a6000 is better than that of the 1080p our of the a6300 / a6500 (I am working on a comparison video on this). Unfortunately the a6000 only does 1080p at 60fps, so in case you need 120fps, you would have to use the 1080p of the a6300 / a6500 (or a different camera). The 4K of the a6300 / a6500 is really gorgeous. the problems are the screen dims so you have to be good at shooting blind, it tends to overheat (a6500 is better at refraining from overheating), and the rolling shutter. I prefer the colors of EOSHD Pro Color profile (I just have the original version... was there a version 2? I know I don't have version 3). But I actually might like Dom Blond's profiles as well (uses Cine 1 and Cine 4 Gammas). I encourage you to look them up on youtube. The AF of the a6300 / a6500 is much better than that of the a6000, espescially with adapted lenses. The Sigma 19, 30, and 60 f/2.8 primes are sharp but they don't take advantage of the full autofocus functions of the a6300 / a6500. I think there is a subtle improvement in stabilization when using my a6500 with IBIS on the crane compared to using the a6300 (or a6000) with no IBIS (only lens-based OSS) on the crane when walking. If I am using my crane and PANNING, I prefer to turn stabilization off... at least, that is how I feel about it today. Tomorrow I might find that having stabilization on when panning using the crane is better. We shall see. And if you think that you are going to be using some cheap manual focus primes than the a6500 is the way to go because of the IBIS. The other route might be an MC-11 adapter and a couple of Canon EF lenses or Sigma for canon lenses (people love the 18-35 f/1.8 on an a6500). The a6300 and a6500 are really excellent stills cameras, by the way. The a6000 is no slouch at stills, either, to be honest. I prefer the a6500 the most but, of course, it is the most expensive. The IBIS is not bad (for stills). I was able to shoot some clean stills with my 85mm lens on my a6500 around 1/20th of a second (holding my breath, very GENTLY pressing the shutter button, while leaning against a wall for stability). Since 85mm on crop sensor is around 130 on full frame, that is around three stops of IBIS functionality for stills in the real world (if you are very careful). I have a D750 and since I NEVER used the viewfinder (neither on my Nikon bodies nor on my Sony bodies), the LiveView AF of the D750 can't keep up with that of the a6500 / a6300 (or even a6000). Having said all that, the a6500 is not for everyone. Be sure to re-read the negatives I listed above. As Max Yurev said in one of his videos, for MOST people the Panasonic G85 is going to be a better camera than the a6500. Hope this helps.

  4. First look and impressions. So far I really love this. Sony has really refined the camera. Andrew, I give you some love for your profiles in here!

  5. Well... for me personally, it was the low light ability, dynamic range, the 4K image resolution, and the quality / usability as a stills camera (since the VAST majority of my work is stills). I mentioned that Max had suggested the G85 is a better camera for most people, and certainly I would agree with it. But he also posted a head to head video a year ago (which is when I bought my a6300) And in that head to head video, the a6300 really appealed to me. Also, Brandon Li uses Sony and his work is beautiful.

  6. I too am looking for external monitors to replace the external LCD on my camera. I've tried a 7" before which looked great, but it's a bit too clunky. I suppose a 5" will be plenty to judge focus? Also I'm a bit confused about the price difference between the FOCUS and the SmallHD 502, could anyone clarify what the 502 offers, besides ports & battery slots, that the Focus doesn't?

  8. @IronFilm Amen to that! Still waiting for that Canon C100mkIII! I am not sure of what prime vs zoom, you are talking about, but for run and gun video workhorses, a zoom (or 2) is a must. That is why I found the Fujinon MK18-55 and 50-135mm T2.9 (7800$ for both), and the Canon 18-80 and 70-200 T4.4 (11000 for both, including the extra servo motor handle. The lenses already have the servo motor in build though) as exciting as most people here found a new camera body. Most people do not know, or have forgotten how much easier our life can be with a moving image optimized lens. The Canon 18-80 with the servo and image stabilization, coupled with the incredible Canon dual pixel AF is an unbeatable combo at the moment. Not a true cine lens per se, but it is coming closer. Just the C200 is a bit out of place right now, both financially and (lack of-) feature wise. A C100mkIII with touch focus and the 18-80, match made in Heaven! In the last documentary I did focus pulling, we had a bag full of Zeiss lenses and an Arri Alura 18-80 T2.6 https://www.ducloslenses.com/products/arri-18-80mm-t2-6-alura Can you guess which one (the bag or the zoom!) we used 9/10? Only for very shallow depth, wider, or more tele we used the primes, and the Alura wide open was already very sharp, and had all the depth of field and more. After a day testing and siting down with the director and producers we couldn't really fault the zoom at any way. Oh, and guess who is making them (Fujinon!). By the way, those S35 lenses are native ones, so not cropped lenses, no different angles therefor. People are forgetting that S35 is a real format. The 5D revolution created a lot of confusion, especially for younger people. I do not thing there is a debate here, different tools for different jobs. This Fuji sounds quite underwhelming though, Fuji offers features drop by drop, and if the new Panasonic is true, I do not see them stay in the industry for long. Except a stop and a half better low light performance, the current Fuji's are far behind Samsung, 3 years later, and a lot of $$ more. And NX has DIS+OIS, while the 16-50 Fuji has not OIS, and certainly do not have DIS! Just saying. You lucky I do not live in East Asia/Oceania!

  9. Bill Viola has done unlimited such stuff. http://channel.louisiana.dk/video/bill-viola-cameras-are-keepers-souls EDIT: never heard of that band either. Must be some of the iPad-making music crowd.

  10. No waveforms. No SDI. Kinda lacking in the "pro features department" :-/ Very rough rule of thumb to consider: AC => use 7 inch (or bigger) Op => use 5 inch (or smaller) Edit: Hmmm... been looking into this out of curiosity, and the 5.7" HDMI monitor which is the Feelworld F570 is very tempting. Yes, it is very bare bones, and lacks features I wish it had, but at only US$190 with free shipping, it looks like quite the steal!

  11. So they added F-LOG and IBIS to an X-T2 basically (if the rumours are to be believed) I think I'm looking forward to the GH5S a lot more. Also rumours Canon will get in the game with a GH5 competitor... XC10 sales better than expected, EF mount version, blah blah blah. GH4 and Samsung NX1 were 2014/15 cameras, so Canon and Fuji have a lot of catching up to do.

  12. These would be great to know: - Sharpness (in both FF, S35, HD-FF, HD-S35) - Rolling shutter (in both FF, S35, HD-FF, HD-S35) - Low light (in both FF, S35, HD-FF, HD-S35) - 100fps Quality (in both FF and S35) - If you have the a7rII, Side to side to compare dynamic range and colour rendition. Thanks a lot and enjoy your new camera!

  13. Our friend is back. It's interesting to get a pov from a guy that uses and owns all 3 cameras. He he basically said what we all know... NX1 isn't best at anything but very good at everything (but lowlight). Seems if he was forced to pick one for all his video+ photo needs. NX is it.

  14. If you go for cheap. There is also a F570. A monitor is a must, even more so with the dimming Sony cameras, but in general, 3" is too small for accurate monitoring and focusing.

  15. Well, let's not to say the overarching concept is worthless. Perhaps it's poorly made in this instance, but a delve into the darker tendencies of human psyche is often compelling, obviously. Most motion picture entertainment in general is ultimately about "man's inhumanity to man."

  18. It would be ironic if this new GH5 was a more 'stills' oriented camera with a higher MP count and reduced video capability.

  19. Hey Aanamorphic shooters!, You're all invited to Anamorphic on a Budget in Amsterdam. Here we all can meet, network and of course show each other's anamorphic sets. The event will take place on Friday December 15th 18:00 - 21:00 at Zamenhofstraat 108 unit 201 at the camera rental Budgetcam Amsterdam. The GH5's are set up, Red scarlet-W, Varicam LT and the Ursa mini pro, so that we can test all our vintage lenses on beautiful focus charts for fun. Budgetcam provides hospitality. Access is free of charge. You can RSVP at http://bit.ly/2AnFVO2 or via tomas@budgetcam.nl! Bring your own anamorphic sets! Thanks Tito Ferradans and Tim Moichido!

  20. @Cliff Totten I like your enthusiasm! However you can't get the pixel size of a sensor from the maths you used, it just doesn't work that way. There are gaps between pixels which vary in size as well. Sony have published the pixel size of the sensor already. It's 4.63 µm (H) × 4.63 µm (V) http://www.sony-semicon.co.jp/products_en/new_pro/may_2017/imx294cjk_e.html Even then this is not the final spec for low light, other things will determine it as well, such as readout noise, noise reduction, pixel design and structure, readout speed, bit depth, native sensitivity, video mode, scaling, codec and even more. The Sony A7S II (12MP full frame) has the largest pixels and lowest density for the size. That is 8.4 micron (µm H) x 8.4 µm (V) Also we should bear in mind amidst the hype, that the sensor model used by the GH5S is purely speculative on behalf of the rumors sites and users - they are the ones that have found a match between the rumored specs and a Sony sensor... but it might not even be a Sony chip, it could be a similar one from somewhere else with completely different performance characteristics. Until Panasonic announce anything therefore, it is all rumours! The Sony one fits the bill for sure, but let's wait and see. It was originally marketed for industrial use, not mirrorless. It might be very good in low light, but the pixel size and density is not the most impressive thing about it, at least on paper. If it shoots 12bit raw DNG with compression... THAT will improve low light performance no end.

  21. The IMX294 is 10.7. But,...Im still not getting this "quad pixel" structure that it has and how that affects "actual" pixel count. Of course, we are still not sure that the GH5-S is actually using this sensor. It seems like they will but we wont know 100% until ChipWorks (TechInsights) tears the GH5-S down and X-rays it. If Panasonic actually uses this chip and explains they are using a "quad pixel" array, than it's a 100% guarantee it's this Sony chip. However, Panasonic WILL go to great lengths to not discuss or give any "hints" that its a Sony chip. Panasonic is VERY against the idea if us all knowing who made the sensors they use. I had 3 Panasonic reps at NAB tell me "No, it's OUR chip in the GH5" ChipWorks (TechInsights) actually does detailed analysis reports on many popular electronic devises. They de-solder chips, X-ray them, do cross section imaging and closely inspect with electron microscopes,...all the parts on a mainboard. They literally break down the foundry and manufacturing process of these sensors and sell the reports to companies that want to know how their competition builds their boards and who their suppliers are. They even map out the entire "inside" logic and schematic of a chip! VERY expensive analytic data! I cant afford it, nor would I even want to pay for it. However, the outside of the report does easily identify the sensor. Anyhoo,...they absolutely nailed the GH5 with a Sony EXMOR IMX272 image sensor. So, sorry Panny and Sony,...you guys got outed,...dirty style! CT

  22. That is why the Focus is a brilliant option. It is meant to be used by single shooters. Not only that, but from its own battery, you can power your camera (there are dedicated bundles officially, by SmallHD for most cameras. I have ordered the GH5 one, even though I do not have one, everyone around me seems to getting, or have one, so there are plenty of cases that this may help somehow, and it is only 100$ more). Blackmagic Video assist 5" is 143x90x30.5 and 362and the Focus is 133x83x19mm and 106gr, do you get the point here? As about the focusing, people were focusing without Canon Dual Pixel for 100 years, and they did fine. I am a big fun of Canon, and nothing is even close right now, but you can do great things manual, that not even Canon can. Recently I was doing focus pulling on a feature documentary, Canon C300mkII and Zeiss/Arri lenses, most of the times I was doing everything by the eye looking through a TV Logic 7" on the camera rig, which is worst in daylight than the Focus (and cost a few times more). The problem here, is most people using photographic lenses, which are not right for our job. That is another issue though.

  24. According to Fujirumor's trusted source, the new camera will have a better grip compared to the xt2 and other ergonomic improvements. And there will be internal flog. The advantages over Panasonic will be the colour science, native aps-c sized sensor and more reasonably priced glass (eg 35mm 1.4, 23mm 1.4, 56mm 1.2 are all cheaper and more compact than m43 equivalents whilst having more character (i.e. imperfections)). As well as phase detection AF. Im not planning to get this camera since its out my price range ($2k) and im not a working video guy but if it was id buy it.
